    Lyrics:
If I give up the seat I've been saving
To some elderly lady or man
Am I being a good boy?
Am I your pride and joy?
Mother please, if you please, say I am
And if while in the course of my duty
    I perform an unfortunate take
    Would you punish me so
    Unbelievably so
Never again will I make that mistake
This feeling inside me could never deny me
The right to be wrong if I choose
    And this pleasure I get
    From say winning a bet
    Is to lose
When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy
Eating more than enough apple pies
Will I glance at my screen
    And see real human beings
Starve to death right in front of my eyes
Nothing old, nothing new, nothing ventured
Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost
Nothing further than proof, nothing wilder than youth
Nothing older than time, nothing sweeter than wine
    Nothing physically, recklessly, hopelessly blind
    Nothing I couldn't say
    Nothing why 'cause today
    Nothing rhymed
This feeling inside me could never deny me
The right to be wrong if I choose
    And this pleasure I get
    From say winning a bet
    Is to lose
Nothing good, nothing bad, nothing ventured
Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost
Nothing further than proof, nothing wilder than youth
Nothing older than time, nothing sweeter than wine
    Nothing physically, recklessly, hopelessly blind
    Nothing I couldn't say
    Nothing why 'cause today
    Nothing rhymed

It was a bit over orchestrated. The strings section was a bit too loud and overpowering and it would have been nice to hear more of him and the piano. He was quite big here in the UK when I was a teenager but yes it was a brilliantly written song.

It was so contradictive of anything we were used to when it came to pop music. And the lyrics! Let me say this it's endearing and aware making at the same time. A short while after came Matrimony and then it got silent up into the eighties. And then a reborn, modern Guilbert O'Sullivan came back on the stage. But nowhere as powerful and beguiling as that poverty boy.

After listening Gilbert's original, I'm coming away with a darker mood and certainly the lyrics are haunting. Burton Cummings covered this on his 1976 solo album because he loved the lyrics and melody, but for some reason didn't sing all of Gilbert's lyrics. Give it a listen. They both are excellent and worthy of listening to.

And if while in the course of my duty
    I perform an unfortunate take
    Would you punish me so
    Unbelievably so
Never again will I make that mistake
This feeling inside me could never deny me
The right to be wrong if I choose
    And this pleasure I get
    From say winning a bet
    Is to lose
When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy
Eating more than enough apple pies
Will I glance at my screen
    And see real human beings
Starve to death right in front of my eyes
Nothing old, nothing new, nothing ventured
Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost
Nothing further than proof, nothing wilder than youth
Nothing older than time, nothing sweeter than wine
    Nothing physically recklessly, hopelessly blind
    Nothing I couldn't say
    Nothing why 'cos today
    Nothing rhymed
This feeling inside me could never deny me

    • @bobsmodelrailways
      @bobsmodelrailways 3 роки тому +11

I agree. I was at Music College in the early 70s when these songs burst onto the scene. Gilbert & Elton were deemed “rubbish” by my tutors as their music (like the Beatles before them) didn’t conform to musical theory. I could have actually written thousands of songs like these, and better, but wasn’t allowed to. Frustrated at this I left College to find my own way but thereby hangs another tale......... anyway these “musicians” were still scorned by the tutors and, in a way, they were right. We had to literally “write” parts, as in 26 instrument scores and voice, four part harmony and piano pieces all of which had to conform to the theory of music whereas Gilbert & Elton went on to make their millions (although Gilbert was ripped off by his manager, and struggled forever thereafter), and Elton triumphed above all the “writers” you can ever imagine. If I had been a “chord merchant” like EJ then I would’ve been thrown out of College. The only true musician on the scene at the time in this genre for the UK was Peter Skellern. But because of the route he chose he never got the exposure he deserved. He died penniless.

Grenville Bamford - Bernie Taupin does not write / compose music. Elton John does. Up until now I've never heard (or read) anyone say otherwise, or even hint otherwise. Feel free to share links with interviews or posts (reliable sources, obviously). In the good old days he, as Reg (sometimes Reggie) Dwight - his real name is Reginald Kenneth Dwight), wrote the music and lyrics to "Come Back Baby" and "Mr. Frantic" when he was with Bluesology

@Grenville Bamford Elton doesn’t do arrangements, nor is he “a writer” He’s a piano player. The musicians were the likes of Paul Buckmaster, Gus Dugeon, etc.

One of the best song writers of his time and still is today in my opinion I think he was under rated when he should of been up there with the best

I remember this song when it was first released in the early 70’s , at the time I thought it was slow and boring , but hearing it again now I’m a lot older , I think it’s a masterpiece of songwriting , the words and lyrics are a superb combination along with the actual tune . An excellently written song of that time seen through the eyes of one of the most underrated talents.

I’ve never ever thought of it as slow and boring, I’ve always liked it and I wasn’t born until 9 years later… It was my Mum got the 7” 45 and I always played it together with ‘Clair’ and ‘Alone Again (Naturally)’ (1972)

The seventies equivalent of Mozart, the lyrical genius of a Shakespeare, and the humbleness of a good soul! Thank you for such a gift of a song to humanity

Great simple song. Back to the wonderful 70's music. Those were the days, nothing else.
