Let's Talk about a Porsche 991 (Porsche 997 vs. 991)

  • So you know I just spent the past year modifying the look and feel of my #Porsche997 to my own style preferences and vision for the car…? Yeah, well... now I’m pretty excited about the prospect of a #Porsche991. Don’t be so surprised! The title of one of my earlier videos from this year was titled, “2019 Brings Change”.
    Today I took this beautiful white 2015 991 Carrera 4 out for a test drive, courtesy of Porsche of Minneapolis. This wasn't a joy ride, I'm extremely interested not only in the 991 but this one in particular. It was incredible to drive and I have to admit that it was very difficult to walk away from it. As I ponder my choices on this specific car over the weekend, in this video I talk through where I’m at with this pretty major decision in my Porsche journey and show you more of this first 991 that I have taken a look at.
    I love the Porsche 997 model and I’m completely in love with my own 997. Anyone who has watched any of my videos knows this. But is the 991 something that would make me say goodbye to it and the #997Brotherhood ? The #997Life ? I’m on the fence and there is a lot to consider. This is the first of a short series of videos I will be making this summer that tries to answer this seemly simple question - 997 or 991? I hope you enjoy this video and the ones that follow!
    Right now though, I’m going to seriously consider this white 991 from Porsche of Minneapolis over the weekend. It was an absolute dream to drive, only has 11k miles and has pretty much all of the features I’m looking for in the 991. Would you pull the trigger on this beauty??

    Had my 997.2 for the past 7 years so been in the same boat. The engine in the 991.1 is basically the same, steering is better in the 997, most 991s are pdk and I would want a manual like in my current car. So that narrows the market for me and my ideal spec car hasn’t appeared. I am perfectly happy with what I’ve got.

    997 all day long. 991 felted a bit too large. The maintenance is also a bit harder. Removing the rear bumper to change the air filter, come on. Look at the 997 turbo, or a gt version. Not a fan of the 991. I VOTE NO.

    997 is the last pure Porsche. I have the same. I have the same dilemma. I thought the 991 is a natural upgrade,however, if you look at the curves of the 997 particularly from the rear over the 991 it’s all getting a bit Audi, the full length brake light is from the TT. The 992,I attended the launch, very impressive,faster,better in many ways,but, bigger bulkier, it is now a small panamera. Personally, I’d buy a 997 Gts or Turbo for the same money, these will increase in value.

      @AutoAmateur  5 років тому

      I’ve offered but she has given me a resounding N-O on that idea. The funny thing is, it was my wife who suggested a trade up to a 991 and get an automatic. Partly because she probably wants me to STFU about them and partly because she would love to drive the automatic. 😆

  • @danielt.3152
    @danielt.3152 3 роки тому +3

    One thing I will say about manual vs PDK, if you drive a lot in California near major cities, the PDK is probably a better option due to traffic jams, stop/go driving. I love my manual 997.1 but I hate stop/go driving and when I get hung up due accidents, road construction it’s just painful going 10ft at a time, and that is the real life dilemma IMHO of the situation. Another comment about the low ground clearance, I wish there was a pneumatic way to raise the entire care 5inches, to go in/out of steep driveways, so you do not drag the front spoiler (or similar) , you need to be very cognizant about the steepness/angles etc and honestly some are near impossible to traverse with out the dreaded scraping.or going out of your way to avoidance, that is the reality you deal with, if the roads were all perfectly designed it would be fine, but that is not the case, One more pet peeve, many drivers will practically tailgate you on a steep hill where there is a stop, with a manual trans, it is mentally frustrating knowing some idiot is on your ass, not knowing that there’s a small chance a little backwards creep on take off for manual cars, and maybe this is a suggestion for those that never think about it too much to give sports cars a little more gap on steep hills with a stop light or stop sign just in case the driver needs a little room, no one wants a scratch front or rear or any drama associated

    You know you want it... Ruthie isn't going to be happy... Lol. I am having the same delima, but I just can't get rid of the 997. Everyone comments on it. Had cars and coffee today and side by side the 991 looks like a pretty sedan. Keep the 997. Raw power. There is no issues with the 997.1 or .2 as far as IMS issues.. more prominent in the 996 that's really hot now as well because of pricing, they are starting to climb in price, the 997 is next. The Cararra S will be hot the last of the pure 911's espically the 997.1 as it's the last of the last. Keep the 997 if you can afford to. A few more years and the 997 will be going up in price. The 991 is still falling in price, so it will be at the right price in a few years. You are living the dream. If you do decide to buy, buy the one with all the features and options you want. FWIW, I’d keep my powder dry for another year. 991 prices will settle, your 997 might even appreciate a bit (full disclosure: I own a 2007 997) and the jump will be easier. Personally, I can’t get comfortable with a 2 pedal car. But that’s just me. For perspective, I used to drive a Morgan +4 as my DD. Good luck. Firstly, many thanks for your videos. I thoroughly enjoy watching you work on your cars. In fact, it was partly because of you that I recently bought a 997 4S PdK.
    I looked at the 991 and 992, but felt they had strayed too far from the traditional shape. Both look a bit angular, to me. They also look huge, by comparison to the 997. Whilst I think this may be an illusion, I still prefer the earlier, more rounded and visually smaller, models.
    Whatever you choose; enjoy.

    In my opinion the only legitimate reasons to swap to the 991 are that you need the extra interior space (and) or you much prefer the way it drives. (Plus the interior space has a big down side - ie bigger car with longer wheelbase, so less sporty.) All the other stuff about interior refinements and the appearance surely can't realistically justify the price difference you're talking about? I would say the 997 is the best 911 sports car ever, the 991 was the start of the shift to a GT car that has continued with the 992. What do you want, a sports car or a GT car?

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  5 років тому +1

      That’s a great question and I don’t know. I want an awesome Porsche 911. Is that an answer? 😆🤦🏼‍♂️

    • @pjay3028
      @pjay3028 5 років тому +1

      @@AutoAmateur sorry to get all philosophical but the answer to what is "awesome" is completely personal. I would say, if you want a GT car the 991 is most awesome, if you want a sports car the 997 is most awesome, so if you can't be absolutely clear about exactly what you want, you won't ever make the correct (or any) decision. It's a bit like Brexit!!! Perhaps the only answer is that you need both of them....... The most important thing to bear in mind is that you should buy the car that satisfies YOU, and completely ignore what other people say they like, it's easy to be influenced by what others prefer, but if you are absolutely clear about what you want, then you can get the right car, others may prefer a different car but that's because they are looking for a different experience so it's just not relevant to your decision. It is very difficult with the 911 series because I firmly believe that Porsche have fundamentally changed the character of the car since the 997 so it's almost like choosing between two different cars altogether rather than just accepting that the 991 is a better version of the 997, it's far too different for that and that's why I will always prefer the 997 to any of the newer 911s. Just like some people won't like anything after the air cooled cars. Having said that, if I absolutely needed more interior space I would just have to get a 991 and be thankful that Porsche made a bigger 911. I think writing down a list of priorities and scoring each car against those priorities could help? Maybe people could suggest a list of priorities for you to consider and then you choose what's important to you?

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  5 років тому

      This is a great response!!! I will never be satisfied because to be completely honest I want the look of my 997, with the extra leg room of the 991 and the PDK. If I could put the PDK into my 997 and have the paddle shifting pedal and figure out a way to get an extra 50-100 bhp, I’m done for good. 😆🤦🏼‍♂️

    • @pjay3028

      @@AutoAmateur why not get a 997.2 C2S PDK, is it front legroom you want or rear?

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  5 років тому

      I forgot the 997.2 has the PDK. I’m not keen on the 997.2’s rear lights though. They look like LED Spider-Man eyes to me. The slight increase of the 991’s interior isn’t the most desirable feature of the 991 to me. It’s the styling - the raised center console, the newer buttons, the PCM, the newer seats. Maybe I keep my 997 and get a 991 as a second. Haha. Wait, my wife WILL neuter me in that case... 🤭🤕

    I’m in the same boat owning a 997...however the 991 is twice the cost and is certainly not twice as good. Your car now looks amazing and I’m sure is just as fun if not more fun to drive than a 991. I get the fact that it’s fun looking for a new car/project but the 997 will be a more sought after car in the long run. The 992 is now out and is another level again and makes the 991 look uninteresting. Maybe look at GT/RS of the older generation but these are maybe just too expensive. Or 964 and customise...

    Both are beautiful dream cars. I would sure be very happy with any. From what I heard from other videos, people almost always get to the conclusion that the 997 is funnier than the 991 mostly because of the same reasons you put: 991 is bigger, more comfortable, has less noise, it's more like a family car, whereas the 997 is smaller, it feels more like a racing car, you feel more the driving experience... Anyway, you will never lose with any choice you make. ;)

    I am on the 997 side. I like the looks, size, and rawness of the 997. I like the updated interior and improved performance of the 991. Hard pass on the 991.2 for the turbo. 991 also has electric steering.... I’d rather have the hydraulic steering of the 997. I also like the price of the 997 vs the 991. Now I’ll caveat this post by saying I have never driven either one of these cars and this is all based on what I’ve read, researched and seen on the UA-cams. I do know the difference between electric and hydraulic steering. I’ve had N/A, turbo and supercharged cars, so I know the difference there. I-4s, I-6, V-6 and V-8. No flat 6, yet. Nice video - on Porsche # 9 now, first 911 was a 76 Targa when I lived in MN and was a member of Nord Stern before moving to Florida and now back up north. Over the past 12 years owned a tiptronic 07 coupe, a 2010 S cab with PDK, a 2014 White S Coupe- PDK, and now a 2017 Carrera PDK again. If you move up the food chain, you might consider a 991.2. The way we drive our cars - long road trips and romps through the hilly country side - it feels more robust than the 14' S coupe. With more low end torque - you are never in the wrong gear. Have fun shopping.

    Hi James,
    what a fundamental question....
    Some points to add more difficulties in your thinking
    -1/ the actual value of the 991, as you said, is twice your 997, but will still drop down for 5 years. (approximatively) Even if you don't buy it for the resell value, it's a point to keep in mind
    -2/ Your 997 can be upgraded again, based on your desire (maybe GT3 RS rims, or new color -covering or paint, etc...) and spare parts will cost less (and if not, will not increase)
    -3/ on the other hand, if you love the 991, and you can trade your 997 for a 991, why don't ?
    -4/ the 991 is more efficient (on all topics : fuel, ride, comfort, ...)
    to conclude, don't think about us (we still look at your channel my friend), think about you and your joy. Carpe Diem said some poets, and I think they were right.

    I had a 997.1 C2 and then C2S. I think a 997.2 is a good compromise. I've since moved away from Porsche, but if I were to go back in, it would be a 991.1. I like the updated infotainment, additional power, and the appearance.

    I'll bet you'll be in a 991 by the end of summer, if not by the end of this video! lol
    It took me two years to find the 'right' 991. I was picky about the options I wanted and I wanted a fair price. Most cars here are over priced due to the local flood of stock options at people's high tech employers. But, eventually I found the right combination of options at a great price, and so last summer I brought home my (new to me) 991. I started with a goal of finding a nice 997, but as I thought about the purchase, car values/depreciation, etc. I decided to go with the 991 due to the bigger engine, more hp, overall design, fit, options, and price. The only thing I don't like about my 991 is that the view of the engine compartment is a plastic panel and two fans! Looking forward to your videos!

Never been happier. 991 was great, fun, modern, etc. But a 6MT 997.2 GTS for essentially even money was a no brainer! And yes Ivan, you are first in line when/if the time comes!!

    Both are great cars. Steering on 997 is better but I prefer both the interior and exterior styling of the 991.1 And for cabrios (which I love) the 991.1s are the very first generation where, with the top up, they look great and don’t lose the outline of the coupe. Huge plus for me.

But i think thats not the point for you anyway. So i would recommend you to stay with the 997. And thats the opinion from somebody who's gone through that process and regret it at the end.

      @@AutoAmateur it wasn't a hard choice. and i met a lot of other Porsche driver who did the same. the 991 ist not as emotional as the 997 is. and from a pure driving experience. the 997 is a lot more fun to drive.
      if i had enough money i would have kept the 991.2 beside the 997 gt3rs. Because it is a really good car and a lot of fun to drive. But not as good as the 997 series is.

    My comment should be biased toward the 991 because that’s what I have. And if you didn’t have the beautiful car you have AND it was not just the way you want it, I’d say YES! Get a 991!!!
    But what I glean from reading blogs is that some of us get the most joy of having the latest, while others enjoy having something specific. (I am of the latter group, wanting the last N/A engine) Which group are you in?
    We are so fortunate to have these cars; either group is a great place to be. If you will get enough joy from the newness of a 991, get one! And just make plans to spend more when that wears off. It's ok, you're not taking it with you. 😊

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  5 років тому +1

      Hahaha. That last point is so very true. It’s so tough. Give me a 991.2 with the NA engine and I’d drive that thing into the ground over the next 20 years. 😆 I love what I have, but the interior updates to the 991.1 and 991.2 are turning my head. I know how amazing and engaging the 997 is a driver’s car, but do I really care about that enough to turn my nose up at the perceived lesser engaging drive of the 991?? I really don’t know.

    • @diegogdiegog
      @diegogdiegog 5 років тому +1

      Then I strongly suggest you do not let go of your car (and spend money) until you are certain. When you are sure, if you do want a 991, you can get it. If it becomes more clear that you do not want the 991 enough for the money, you didn't make a mistake. Ditto on the N/A 991.2! 👌

    I had a 997.1 S for about a week until IMS failure caused my engine to blow up. It was a secondary car to my Tesla Performance 3. The dealer was kind enough (after I contacted my lawyer) to give me a refund on the 997. A few weeks later the Tesla was gone and I owned my current 991 C4S. It's a beautiful car, but it has had some issues. Have had all 8 COV's swapped out due to a recurrent cooling system fault warning light. (My car is a '14 w/ under 30k on it.) Also, while NA cars are nice--the 991.2 and newer all come with turbos. Sub 4 (0-60) times for a base 992 for 75-80k is interesting when you are paying for 65-85 for a S,4S, or GTS 991. That is not even mentioning that the Turbo/Turbo S 991.1 will probably drop below 100k once the 2020 models go on sale. Good luck in whatever you decide.

    Just my opinion, of course, but I think the 997's are simply better looking than the 991 series. To my eye, the 991's are a little "porky" looking.
    I do believe Porsche has remedied the problem with the 992-a much more muscular looking car, in my opinion. My wife and I ordered a Turismo and a 991.2 Targa on Halloween Day of 2018. We got the allocations for both cars, with arrival dates of 4/5/19. About three weeks later I watched the online unveiling of the 992 at the LA Auto Show. I was blown away by the 992, and the next morning called my dealer and cancelled the Targa. I told him to keep the deposit, no hard feelings. He was upset of course, but since we had ordered two vehicles he was very kind about it. The Turismo is here, it's fast and beautiful. Now we are just waiting for Porsche to announce the next Targa, or perhaps a Cab with the manual transmission. Either way, cancelling the 991.2 was the right decision for me. Don't get me wrong, I would not kick a 991 out of the garage, they are awesome as well! But since I did have a chance to wait for the car I really want, that's the decision I made. Great video of the Dragon, by the way! I've ridden it three times on my HD, believe me the pucker factor was way up there!
