- No car is perfect and in this video I run down the 5 things I don’t like about my Porsche 991. I know, I know… who has anything complain about when you drive a 911…? Everyone has something… I have five things. Enjoy and I hope a few of these give you a laugh.
More 991 videos coming soon! More 997 videos too! Cheers!

#6- It's not your 997. ;)
Kidding. I love your 991, but owning a 997.1 Turbo I just really liked your 997- especially with the Aero.
Haha!!! #Truth !
The one thing I love about your 991.....the smile on your face when you drive it! Glad you're having fun!
Ha!! Thanks! 🤩🥳🥳🥳
Have had my 991 for 7 years now. You nailed two items: 1) fans below the engine deck lid , 2) having to remove the rear bumper cover to change the air filters. A third item you didn’t mention...the Pirelli P1 Zeros, was so happy after wearing them out and replacing them with Michelin PS 4S, incredible improvement .
Aha! Thanks! I love the Michelin PS4S.
So had an F-type with a supercharger before this and what I miss is the low end torque. Have to drive it like I stole it for it to give me what I want.
I agree with #3, not being able to see the engine when you raise the lid is definitely a bummer...
I also don't care for the rear spoiler lifting up to signal the cops when you're speeding... lol
Hahaha. I didn’t think about the spoiler that way before. You’re right!! 😆😆😆👍
Leave it up all the time then.
I have a 911 and discovered the reason you can’t see the engine is that it doesn’t have one.
Hahah.
Keychain tickles your knee because it is lower and closer to the wheel -- the 991 was sold with keyless-entry and keyless-go as an option (my 991 turbo has it) in which you don't have to insert the key to start the car. There's a removable stub piece that you keep in the ignition switch which you turn.
It's a really awesome option because you can unlock and get in and go without removing the keys from your pocket.
Ahhhh, that’s awesome. I don’t think I have that function. I have to use the key to unlock the car for sure. I can’t just walk up to it and open the door with the key in my pocket.
James try some dry silicone on the contact points for the lid. Spray on a cloth then wipe. Works very well on the window trim/seals or any moving parts that need lube without the mess...Stuff is amazing!!
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll try it out!!
How can you not like the 991.1 rear lights man??? I love them!
They’re ok. I like them at night. I think I just prefer how they evolved into the 3D versions in the 991.2 much more.
I could add another negative, the 997 wing mirrors are ironic, the shape and the gap for airflow. The 991 borrowed from the Passat.
😢
Only joking my friend, enjoy your new 911
😆😜👍
I am convinced that Porsche had no problem making the engine virtually inaccessible based on their experience with the 987 Cayman. The engine is completely covered by a bulkhead cover. I’m sure (in their minds) the 987 softened the blow so to speak so they could do what they wanted from a design standpoint.
Good point. And the 987 engine is much easier access than the 981.....You have to remove the interior to get to the 981 engine?
Kerry Myers Well even in the 987 there is also a panel behind the seats to access the drive belt and water pump.
I drove a 991.1S. I love the car but it still hasn't made me want to give up my 996 C4S. Maybe i will buy one eventually when prices dip a little more but there is something special about the 996 C4S.
I that’s really cool and totally fair enough! Awesome!! 🤩🙌
Try putting the keychain directly on to the key, not onto they ring. Try some Vaseline for the squeak.
Your dislikes only tell how great the car is.
#1 - Entry and Drive is the answer
Nice. Yes!
I own a 2014 Carrera S. No 1 agreed, I decided almost immediately to remove the key chain. 2, mine doesn't. 3, agreed, but so what? 4, it is a driver's car, it doesn't bother me. I hardly ever listen to my iPod. 5, I like the tailights, although mine have de-lamination that the dealership wouldn't cover.
The most annoying thing about sports car today is that manufacturers are moving away from manual transmission..... That's the fun of driving a sports car... I don't mean shifting pads on the steering wheel but the clutch pad in the floor and the shifter in the center of the seats (old school driving)... I have both acura tl 05 (6 speed) and a acura rsx 03 (5 speed) that's the joy of driving those cars is being able to control the power of the engine that's transfer though the transmission....
I just can't imagine driving an awesome machine like yours an it's not an manual.. Beautiful car but needs that old school touch (manual).
1st world problems my friend.
Truth!! 👍🙌
James, gotta add my biggest complaint for my 991.1 - a stupid design flaw, but not unique to Porsche. I HATE interior silver trim. I literally kept a small dark cloth in my car to cover the trim when the sun, being at just the right angle, would reflect off the trim on the center console and blind me. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Jim!! 🤩👍
i had the same problem and replaced that outer silver trim piece on the center console with a black one. solved the problem and easy to just pop in.
I have the 991.1 GTS and love it looks great in lava orange but i am quite envious of your soul exhaust , seriously tempting 👍
Go for it!
Porsche can get you through times of no sex better than sex can get you through times of no Porsche.
Heard about French ticklers, now there's an English tickler... Go Porsche.. :- 0
😆🙌
The 991 as a larger car is a huge plus!
Definitely good for big lads like me.
There is an aftermarket unit you can add to provide car play / android auto - it is completely hidden - cheaper than replacing the car! the screen is resolution is the only limiting factor
That's right! I sell them. :)
Your 997 was a standard, your left leg didn't sit there, it was on the clutch so the keychain didn't hit your knee.
That makes sense. 👍😆
I didn't have the key issue on my first 991, as I don't keep anything dangling off the key, but I found it really annoying having to use the key with my left hand to start the car. My 2nd 991 has the Entry/Drive so that problem is gone.
Very nice!!! I would like that feature in a future 911.
Window tint would make her look awesome ! My '05 Boxster S had it when I bought it. They even put a very light tint on the windshield. You can hardly see inside the car with the windows up.
Tinting! It’s on the list. Thanks!!
@@AutoAmateur Window tint is a cop magnet.
Haha. True!
Turn signal indicator could have been located towards the bottom of the rpm gauge..I drive with the steering wheel tilted low and that blocks the view of the indicator.
Yes!! Agreed.
Rain sensing wipers
I like seeing the Drome shots I'm from Minnesota keep up the good videos
Well thanks neighbor!! 🤩🙌 Appreciate it!
Matchbox car..... HA HA, well i have never liked the 991 or 992... too futuristic, i have purchased 200 cell sports cats for my 997 from topgear exhaust now, will be interesting in the combo with my fabspeed system, will it do something with the note
Ohhhhh very nice!!! I bet your 997 will sound better than ever now!! 👍💥💥💥
The electronic oil level gauge and not having a dipstick. I hated that when I first got it and I still hate it now. These cars are definitely designed for the three-piece suit "key-turner" (a phrase that I coined ages ago) types who hate to get their hands dirty. One needs to get the engine to operating temperature for the damn thing to provide any oil level info. About 83C or 181F. If those software weenies programmed the thing right, you should also be able to read the oil level when the engine is at ambient temperature. All you do is change the oil level gauge to read a level for "cool" oil. Duhhhh!
Don’t get the itchy knee thing. You don’t need to have the keys there?
I’m a special soul. Haha. No, if I had the keyless entry and drive gadget, it wouldn’t bother me. But with this base Carrera I have to use my physical key inserted into the dashboard to drive the car. It’s basically just my key chain that drops down and knocks against my knee. If I just use the key without any kind of key chain / fob, it’s not an issue.
Thank you English Elon musk. I’m keeping my 997'!
😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
I love your journey and I love your channel. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Mathew! Appreciate it!!! 🤩🙌
Rear taillights should always blink orange for the indicators.
A lot of cars in the US blink red at the rear, which is legal. I prefer the orange though.
I would have to say the body coloring is great and the wheels make the car.
Thanks Rob! 🤩🙌
Initial reaction to limited engine access: not good. Think I’ll keep my 997.1 for a bit!
Yup, if you want to do anything other than fill the oil or the coolant, you’re in for a few hours of work to jack up the car and remove the rear bumper.
@@AutoAmateur Nah, once you've removed the rear bumper once you'll have it off in 10-15 minutes after that! Although it's a pain to have to do it, it's actually pretty straightforward. Enjoy the car, looks great!
Thanks Ian!! I’m going to attempt it on Friday or this weekend, so hold that thought! 😬😬😬
I’ll keep with the traditional method of accessing the 911 engine. The pros/cons of evolution.
You think changing air filters in a 991 is a PITA, have you seen what is involved for an oil change on a 718? Wow!
#1 fix: lower your seat adjustment. it is probably at top, if possible lower about 2". COME ON MAN !?
😆😆😆🤷♂️
My center console also squeaks. I think it's the two rubber boots un the bottom of the lid against the plastic of the base. Also the sprung hinge at the back of that center console squeaked a lot, but with the whole water episode, I took the liberty of greasing that spring when I had the rear seats out of the car. Now, at least that hinge is quiet.
Thanks mate! 🤩🙌
PDK is a great gearbox guess they just what you too take it down to the main dealers for a service
I saw PCA has a trip thru Iowa/Illinois for the fall. Not as long as a drive!
Your first gripe is based on a keychain that can absolutely be switched. That’s just weaaaak!
I still enjoy your videos despite being the worlds largest 911 Simp
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤷♂️
@@AutoAmateur I’m getting a PPI on a 991.1 C2 and I really hope it works out! All the best “Australian Elon Musk”
hi! whats about right knee comfort? looks like 997 had bit more space for right knee and 991 has less because of central console
It’s really weird. The 991 is definitely bigger inside, but for some reason the ignition is a little lower. Maybe it’s the angel of the ignition? 🤦🏼♂️
I like how throw in the different camera angles.
Biggest dislike for me is the noise the tyres make when on left or right hand hard lock have you noticed it? Mine looks very similar to yours I have the same style/coloured wheels but platinum silver body with blue leather interior ... awesome car I love it!
Yes! I’ve noticed that. Ugh! It’s annoying.
Good to know!! Thanks!
My number one peeve with the 991.1 is too much work to do for oil chance and air filter change. Guess Ill just still with wanting a 996 turbo and 997s. Love the looks of 991.1s but effe all that.
Hahaha. I’ll be finding out how difficult those jobs are later this week... 😢
Im sure you will. That is a huge turnoff for me with newer vehicals. I like doing my own maintence
I have watched some vids on oil changes on 991.1 and 991.2. While I agree that there are a few steps to remove the fans intake section it looks really straight forward with minimal tools/time and the oil filter is easily accessible then. Looks pretty easy. This is probably a product of them pushing the engine as far forward as possible in the 991 design. 997 has the engine mounted quite a bit further behind the rear axles. I am guessing this translates into better handling but more obscured engine...
@@avintageparcel8938 Ive heard a few Porsche enthuist say that 997s are the best handling Porsches. But I could be wrong.
Porsche moving in the wrong direction here. Have you seen what a DIY’r has to deal with for an oil change in a718? Unbelievable.
Yeah that lack of access to the engine is a killer. Almost a deal breaker. Some say they can take off the bumper in 30min. Let's see how fast you can do it. 🙂
If I use my airbag knife I reckon I can get that bugger off in less than 15 mins. 😬😂
LOL No anything but that airbag knife please! 😃
Hahaha.
My friend, you have gone to the dark side. You are now the proud owner of a Volkswagen. It is now the VW brotherhood. I have no squeaks in my Porsche 997 😉
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
actually, it's Porsche Clan who took over Volkswagen with unscrupulous scheming.
Porsche clan has 53% voting power over Volkswagen
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_family
I’ll take it off your hands as these are terrible issues you shouldn’t have to go through, I’ll take one for the team 😂
Hahahaha. You’re a good lad Iain, very kind and brave. 😆👍
I just discovered the channel and am LOVING the content. But I just don’t understand how the knee tickle made your bottom five. It’s not the car’s fault, it the keychain you added. Plus you could just do a ‘keychain delete’ mod for $0.
Hahahaha. That’s very true. 😆👍
Ps. Welcome to the channel and thanks for watching and commenting!! 🤩🙌🙌🙌
I like the new intro now including the 991:-)
Aha! Glad you noticed!!! Haha. Thanks! 🤩🙌
If that the worst of the 991, it is a great car cause that just really nitpicking, I don’t care to look at engine or working on them, mole skin will fix the squeak, wear long pants so your knee doesn’t get tickled 🤦🏻♂️and couldn’t care less about apple car play so, yeah really good car
Thanx
Thanks so much!
so basically there isn't anything that you don't like :)
Hahahahaha. That's right Tareq!! I had to really think hard to find 5 things I didn't like about that 991. Haha.
The key tickle is a first. 🤔🤣
I’m a trend setter.
It is (was) seriously annoying, believe me.
#6 - Lack of storage space... #7 - water running in to the window if open in the rain or after using windscreen washer... #8 ride height is 2cm too high on the Carrera...
#6....? You think it has less storage space than other 911s?
@@AutoAmateur This is my 1st 911 - I came to 911's from driving Audi RS4's where there was loads of storage - so having virtually none (by comparison) has come as a bit of a shock!
PS. What size spacers are you going for? 7 / 15's?
Ahhhh! I see! Yes, totally then.
7mm front, 15mm rear, yes.
Thanks for the videos. Question: would you say that each model has gotten quieter on the inside while doing highway driving? Specifically going from 996 to 997 to 991.
No I would actually say it’s the opposite. My 991 gives me more of engine sound (in a good way) than my 997 did. My 997 gave me more inside the cabin than my 996. All of them have been base models with stock exhausts so it’s a pretty straight forward comparison.
I will say this though, there is definitely less wind noise in the cabin of the 991. Both 997/996 gave me a fair amount of noise from the speed of the wind coming at the car.
@@AutoAmateur Okay, yeah, I guess I was referring to wind or road noise, not the exhaust. :) My 996 has a lot of wind/road noise as compared to my E39 M5, but that's an apples to oranges comparison. I've also got the Porsche Sport Exhaust, which is really cool. It's quiet when I want it, and aggressive when NEEDED. ;) Good luck on future upgrades, and look forward to more videos.
I’m looking into exhaust options right now. I love the idea of the genuine PSE but then there are so many other options too.
@@AutoAmateur The PSE was expensive, about $3,500 from Sunset Porsche in Oregon, but I was able to subsidize some of that cost because I removed and sold the previously-installed Fabspeed exhaust, which was CRAZY loud and droney. There is no substitute for having the little button on the dash, I feel like James Bond when I "engage" it. :)
Love the lobsters
When are you taking the 991 to the dragon?
You drive thru Chicago. I jump in!
Hahaha. That’s awesome. I do travel to Chicago quite a lot actually.
I’m thinking about doing a fall colors trip to the Dragon this year or head out there again in the spring. It’s a looooooong mother of a trip.
Agree with you James....... but for the key fob issue. Additional dislikes on mine - Dislike 1: Unlike my 997, the AC in the 991/981 platform automatically comes on by default when I start the car so I am constantly turning it off. Annoying. Default should be the system is off at ignition, not on. Dislike 2: The inside of the windshield is prone to fogging in humid conditions which may explain Dislike 1. Dislike 3: Some of the 991/981 platform is major step away from the Porsche legacy and tradition....especially the interior. Not saying I dislike the interior.....but it is a greater departure from Porsche legacy and tradition than previous evolutions. But all these minor dislikes are outweighed by my long list of “Likes”.
Nice list Kerry!! Being the overweight overheated ginger that I am though, I love love LOVE the a/c and ventilated seats. If I can them up to an 11 I would... 🤣
Auto Amateur Agree. I am in Florida and my ventilated seats are da bomb!
Hahahah. 🤩👍
For someone wanting to wrench/service your own car it seems the 991 isn’t ideal. Bumper removal for an air filter?! Trim removal prior to an oil change!? I say Porsche were trying to milk owners for every penny they could through services but to be honest how many people with a brand new 991 did their own maintenance? They took it to the dealer, maybe an Indy, to keep the service records legit and not void warranties or whatnot. Still, I’d wanna see my engine as well. LMFAO at the tickling knee!!
Hahahahahah. Thanks. Yup, the tickling knee? The struggle is real! 😆😢😢😢😢
Ps. 100% on Porsche wanting people to bring their 991s in for service.
while you do have a point, that is not entirely true, if porsche main goal was that, they wouldn't have so much work making the DFI engine so reliable, well compared to the M97 of the 997 bulletproof..
johny z what do you mean? What’s not entirely true?
@@AutoAmateur It's the little things in life. They can make them frustrating, and the GOOD little things can make it so much better.
the reason i like this gen is the taillights.
That’s cool!! They’re growing on me more and more.
the keychain is tickling?! Are you serious bruh?
Just put some hook and loop fastener on the key or the console
😆😆😆😆😆🙄 Haha. Totally serious. 🤦🏼♂️😆
I know the 997 isn’t the modern GT car you have now, but you must miss the manual gearbox and involvement you had before!?
Honestly? Not really. The PDK is soooooo much fun to drive. I still feel engaged and feel the road. It’s so awesome.
The PDK with the paddle shifters is as much fun for me as rowing through a MT. Much more forgiving in traffic too if it is a DD.
Will you Get a exhaust?😁
That’s a great question!! To be determined... I’m currently looking into a few different options. 🤔👍
Men don't have key chains. Consider just a key fob.
Key chain... really...
Ha! Yup. 🤦🏼♂️🙄
My 997 is identical to your 997 before you went Micheal Bath on it...😉
There’s a lot to be said for #MichaelBathStyle ! Especially those lobster wheels of his. 😍💥
Really man lol so its 97% perfect and the key chain thing really man! put a rabbits foot on the end lol will feel weird and a + ya lucky to have that car its wonderful(Shh get a rabbits foot on it lol )
A rabbit’s foot!! Haha. Now that will feel really weird. I can just see it now, “Sorry for swerving around Officer, I was being tickled by a small dead animal while driving”. 😆🙌
991 taillights are much nicer than 997. although, the clear tail lights I've seen on some look terrible. I think apple car play is very overrated. I have it in my sierra all terrain and never use it but maybe I'm missing something. Does the 991 allow you to voice command songs, start up Pandora, etc?
No voice command in the 991.1, at least not in my 991. I can’t say enough good things about CarPlay. Siri is available at the touch of a button, the call management app is just as easy to use as on the iPhone, as are the rest of the major apps like contacts, texting via voice, music, maps etc. I had in both my 996 and 997 with aftermarket units and loved it. I really miss it now.
@@AutoAmateur I installed a Kenwood unit with Apple CarPlay in my 996, and I'm in love with it. The voice to text feature actually works rather well (to my surprise). The ONLY thing I don't like is that it doesn't have a damn volume knob. I hate clicking on the volume up-volume down. But I realize that with the large screen, it's a trade-off. But Apple CarPlay is NOT overrated, in my opinion, just by people with sour grapes. :)
I have siri eyes in the 996 and it's finickly now with xs phone. I find myself yelling "CALL blank you blank blank blank" the sierra all terrain siri eyes always works even with new phone.
@@AutoAmateur My 991.1 has the voice command option but it doesn't understand me!
Would love to see you install this retrofit kit ... Apple CarPlay for the PCM ... www.nmautomotive.co.uk/carplay-androidauto
Thanks!! I'm actually about to install something very similar. It arrived this week. I couldn't get the NM Automotive kit, I don't think they deliver to the US any more. The part I have is basically the same though. New video coming soon...!
1- DFI engine does not sound as good as M96/M97
2- interior is a evolution of panamera not true 911 (while a great interior lacks heritage)
3- could be much lighter if was not so big (while being lighter than a 997, could be much better)
4- rear design is a bit lardy and aston-martineske from some rear angles (992 has corrected this)
5-direction could be much more direct, porsche handicaps carrera models to give margin of improvement to the GT models, GTS, GT3, RS, and GT2
I think any of these are more valid than the keychain.. just use a shorter one.. or don't drive so close to the wheel..
Duuuuude! 1. Just plain wrong, I’ve owned 996, 997, 991. This one sounds the best of them all to me.
2. Totally fair. 😢
3. 100% true.
4. “Lardy”! I love it. Haven’t heard that expression in years and you’re right. 🤣👍
5. True but this base is more than enough car for me and I would guess for most.
6. Have you ever had a knee tickle?! It’s annoying AF bro. 😢😆👍 (Your solution is of course the right way to go... 😆).
@@AutoAmateur sure I had! I changed the keychain tho..
about point one, I was trying to be brief in stock from sure you are right, early 2000's cars were way over muffled, as you know. and 991 with the active PSE, sure it sounds much louder and better, my point is, with the same mods, like exhaust, IDP plenum the M97 sounds WAY better than the DFI engine
@@AutoAmateur a quick search, click this: ua-cam.com/video/HoWx04soMFg/v-deo.html ,it's time stamped, just hear it, a 991 will never sound like that, might get close with a full decated straight pipe system like some IPE exhausts, but who wants to roll on a straight pipe mega drone exhaust, plust the admision wailing sound of the M97 that you can't hear from outside like you do inside.. and just to make it clear, 991 is my favorite 911 platform, and I would take one over a 997 or 992 any day. had a 700hp 991 turbo for a while, it was a blast.. check my instagram bro, not trolling you.
Here is an interesting data point on your #3 which everyone seems to cite without actually looking at the data. Comparing base carrera coupes (991 to 997). The 991 is about 1.2" longer and exactly the same width at 71.2". Curb weight is less than 100 pounds more in the 991 which is probably a marvel of engineering given the significant increase in interior refinement and safety regulations. Sooooooo, is that really "so big"? What has increased substantially is the wheelbase, more than 4", which is significant and translates directly to better handling characteristics in the 991.
@@avintageparcel8938 what are you comparing the 991 with? no one has a clue..
First world problems 🤣
It seems to me that your sit position is too high. Cheers!
Unfortunately my seat is all the way down and back! I'm just a big fat bastard. :-)n Haha.
The engine access is a major blow. Dismantling the car for air filter access and oil change......just silly. Another reason the air cooled are coveted by the shade tree mechanic types. Nothing more rewarding than a raw car you feel with ALL 5 senses.
Sounds like its time to trade it!
Hahahaha. 🤣
