    I'm guessing the driving experience is comparable. To me it's really about a) can you afford a 991 b) can you afford to repair electronic failures in the 991 c) if yes to a & b then get a 991 strictly because of the interior. The 991 interior is an exceptional place to be and it's the only thing that substantially better than the 997. Otherwise they're comparable.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  5 років тому +3

      I think that’s a great summary. (Ps. There has to be a UA-cam video somewhere that can show me how to install a 991 interior into my 997. 😆🙌 )

      @@AutoAmateur I find the 997 interior that I have optioned is so very similar to the 991. Now 996 to 997 is a huge difference. I happen to have extended leather, sport seats and wheel color keyed console, sport crono etc....and for my eye there is no difference except I have a stick...which is why I would never "upgrade". Keep your 997 or else it will be something you regret. Save for however long you require and buy a 991 as well if you need.

      Are there alot of electronic failures on the 991 platform? Wouldn't the 997 ims issues be worse? I know the 991 heater can break but not a huge deal as i live in california. Love to hear your thoughts and experiences as I am looking to get a 991 soon.

    My old bones are telling me the lowered 997 is bit too harsh.

    I don’t speak for everyone, but I feel you are in the same world of pain,like all fellow Porsche 911 owners, as much as we love our current model, the lure of a newer version is exciting and frustrating. I have a 997, the car I wanted when I first saw it in England in 2005, to me it epitomises the prowess of a proper raw sports car for the road. Until you own a 911, you will never understand the love affair.

    Thorughly enjoy your videos, great job on them. I have driven a 991.1 C2S on a test drive before eventually buying a 997.2 C2S. The 991 definitely had more of the GT car feel, more comfortable and more refined. It would be the better car to drive everyday to and from work or even around town if you wanted it to be more comfortable. PDK is also better in the 991. What I can say though is that for me, the 997 suited what I wanted to use it for was 8 months out of the year for weekend driving. After having an issue with my 997.2 C2S that the dealer could not solve, I ended up selling it back to them and I am now on the hunt for a 997 GT3. They are great cars and has been my favorite out of all that I have driven, including 3 997 Turbos (1 .1 and 2 .2's) a 991.2 GT3 and various other Porsche's. No wrong answer, being able to own one of these cars is truly amazing and you will enjoy no matter what you end up with, after watching your most recent video it sounds like you got a 991. Congrats!

    I don't know man! I love my 991.1 C2S a lot! The thing that puts me off the 991.2 is the sound. Yes, it's a better looking and faster car, but the 3.0L engine just feels like Porsche compromised a bit too far. Anyway, I was in the 997 vs 991 decision camp for 2 years. Ended up with the 991 PDK and not regretting it one bit. People who think it's strictly a GT car, well go and drive one hard and you'll find it has a split personality. My heart rate on my Garmin watch begs to differ! It's an epic machine for the money.

    White or GT Silver are great ‘colours’ for a 911. Black is fantastic but so difficult to maintain. Agreed with your comments about the rear lights of 997 and 991... 991 is a very compelling proposition, but if you do stick with the 997 would you consider after lowering it taking it back to a stock form like Michael Bath’s car? I think his car looks perfect in my view. Classic and understated. Good luck with your process, you can’t really go wrong. There isn’t a bad 911.

    • @MichaelBath
      @MichaelBath 5 років тому +2

      I agree with Nicholas, i would probably go with silver again (GT Silver) or white. Although, if I was lucky enough to buy a GT3 RS then it would have to be strong colour - lava orange / blue / ultraviolet. Classic and understated i like that 👍 Cheers Nicholas!

      And I hear ya on the tail lights of the 997.2 - but have you considered the 4S with the red light strip all the way across? It makes the lights on the 997.2 not as noticeable in my opinion. You also didn’t mention your thoughts on the Carrera 4 vs. Carrera... is 4 wheel drive something you want?

    I'm a 997.2 GTS owner. A hell of a build with full aero, carbon buckets, and leather to sample interior. It's one of a kind. HOWEVER, I drove a 991.2 GTS and it is leaps and bounds better in every single way imaginable. The only thing "better" on the 997.2 GTS is the sound and steering. One thing that I feel a 991.2 should have is RAS. Great video!

    I bought my 997.1 C2S several years ago (from the Minneapolis Porsche Dealership) and LOVE it. Here are a couple thoughts on your "dilemma" 997.1 vs 991.1= 1) Bang for the Buck...nothing has more performance than the 997(4.5 0-60 is fast enough for anyone not wanting to go to jail or spend $1,000 a month for car insurance). 2) Sun Roof vs Moon Roof....only the 991 has a glass moon roof if you're want more light (I wish the 997 had glass, but wasn't an option) 3) Pure engine sound. The 997.1 just has an amazing engine note that the 991 doesn't because of the DFI. I know everyone talks about the IMS, but I had the rubber seal on my IMS barring removed (L&N recommendation) when i had a new clutch put in to solve the issue 4) Looks - The 997.1 has the most perfect proportions It looks like a classic Porsche 911 from every side. The 991's are beautiful as well, but just not as proportional. 5) Transmission - You have GOT TO BE KIDDING. The manual transmission is a must with a sports car. There are so few "sticks" available. Take a look at the demand of used Ferreris and Lambos with manuals. They command a premium over the automatic even though they were cheaper when new. Or, do a search on the PorscheUSA site and see how few used 911's are manual. Besides, having a stick is like having an extra security system because so few people know how to drive them any more.

    I totally get the burger analogy, couldn't agree more. Here's a suggestion though, find a 997.2 that fits the bill and swap the rear lights and bumper with your 997.1 The person buying your car would probably prefer the upgrade, and you get what you want too..... Then in a few years go with the 991.2
    I love the videos, I always think the planning and option analysis is the best part of any major purchase.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  5 років тому

      Thanks! That's a great suggestion! For sure, that's a way forward. I was looking at the 997.2 GTS market last night. I can get most of the things I want... the GTS steering wheel with Paddle Shifters and the PDK, Sports Chrono, PSE, etc. I think the only thing I can't get with the 997.2 is the vented seats, but that's no big deal.

  • @713vinh
    @713vinh 5 років тому +1

    I love my 08' C2 997 and currently have no desire to upgrade however I have thought about the 991. It's indeed a beautiful car but I don't know if it will excite me or engaging enough for me to make it a weekend car. I'm afraid I might get bored with it fast being that it has all the creature comfort, PDK and more muted steering feel. My 997 always puts a smile on my face when I take it out for a spirited drive and I think a big part of that is due to the rawness of it.

    When looking at the 991.1 vs 991.2, I think the biggest thing you have to consider is NA vs Turbo. Also, the 991 Carrera has the 3.4L and the S has the 3.8L. You get the great NA sound with either and you won't get that with the 991.2. I have PDK and PSE. I love both options. However, when my warranty ends, I will get an extension just because PDK ain't cheap to replace if something happens.

    I have had both 991.1 GTS and the 997.2 GTS. Both amazing but the one I have more fun with is the 997. You don’t need to go as fast to get the thrills. Both are fast but The 991.1 is very fast and really your just going to get in more trouble because you want to go faster to get the same thrills. Just get the the 991 because you can always go back to get your 997 again later. No regrets live it up.

    @Auto Amateur, I owned a 997.1 C2 and decided to upgrade to a 991.1 C2S (back in 2014). After owning the 991.1 for a bit, I was so turned off by the car I ended up selling it and going Porsche'less for four years. Mate, i reckon your answer is a 997.2 Carrera GTS with PDK, going on what you've said. I know you don't like the rear lights, but they grow on you. Advantage is, it's still a 997 but has the benefits of the 991.1 with the DFI engine, PDK, and similar money to the 991.1 C2/4. Also the GTS will most likely hold it's value because of that special/rarer factor. The C2 GTS is the only wide body 2WD apart from the GT3 RS and Sport Classic which are a lot more expensive. I hear where you're at though, i have a 997.2 C2, but keep looking at 991.2's now, if it's going to be a 991 it has to be the .2 for me, for similar reasons you pointed out, i love the Carrera T ... but then for that money it gets close to a 997.2 GT3, which i'd much rather have ... i go round in circles and try and stay happy with what i've got! Maybe try and test a 997.2 GTS?

      It’s great to know I’m not the one in this predicament! I have started looking at the 997.2 GTS and there are quite a few on the US market right now that are in my price range. Definitely an option if I get can past the Spider-Man rear lights. 😆🤦🏼‍♂️

    The tail of the dragon video was fantastic! Thank you for sharing with us especially being overseas and unable to appreciate it in person.
    The six speed manual 997.1 Carrera coupe is really the pinnacle of the 911 street performance car. Porsche made a brilliant vehicle. Yourself and Michael are right in saying “base” Carrera is undermining the brilliance of the car. I have the 997.1 C2S manual coupe and if I could do it all over would save myself some money and buy a manual 997.1 C2 or C4 even for the fatness! I’d upgrade the brakes to those on the S. The extra money saved would be put into a centre console delete, fister exhaust and some beautiful folding euro bucket seats for my 3 year old to climb in the back.
    Why would I not buy the S? Firstly, I don’t have the time or area to track it so the 3.8 is too powerful for the hills. Here we have draconian driving regulations and by the time I’m feeling and hearing the excitement of my 911 I’m already well and truly smashing the speed limit. The 3.6 is powerful enough for the winding hills and valleys of where I live and the manual 3.8 is not a drag car in stock form anyway. The new Mercedes 4 cylinder turbo is going to push out 310 kilowatts! It would crush my 911 in a straight line and every one is going to have one of these as an everyday driver.
    Pasm? It’s hard for our roads. Really hard! I don’t use it even though each time I go out I say I will 😆 I can live with or without it.
    So your car is perfect as a drivers car. It won’t get any better. The 991 is as many said a goodbye to the sports car and a hello to grand touring but without all the space. The 991 with pdk could be a nice compliment to the 997 but I wouldn’t replace it with it. The 991 will drop heavily over the next few years while your 997 will lose little value especially now its famous! :) As exciting as it is for a new comfortable, modern, automatic, luxury toy you know what you should (shouldn’t) do. As a bloke also with impulsive car tendencies I feel you may have already emotionally and mentally committed!?

    • @AutoAmateur

      Haha. To your last point, no... I haven't already mentally committed yet. :) Close, but no. I'm still very much leaning towards to staying with my 997 but I'm excited at the prospect of what a new 911 for me would look like. I love your post though, absolutely fantastic!!! 10/10!

      Hahaa I have the same thoughts as you at times but the price of a 991.1 pdk or manual is from 140k aud or 105k usd and up makes up my mind for me.
      You know i have been tempted by the gt4 which here is about 115 usd. It is a cayman rather than a 911 I know but I think with so much stuff from the gt3 and a mid engined 3.8, and with a 6 speed it could be a more modern yet still classic in some ways collectible Porsche.... but it isn’t a 911 🤔

    I have a 997 S gen 1 manual and I have been considering a 991.1S as I like the look of it but I have concerns about build quality based on Nick Murray videos. But it could be possible Nick is either unlucky or to fussy either way it would probably be better to buy a 2013 onwards rather than the first year of production. However I am going to sell my 997 anyway and finish off a 996 Aero project and I will wait for the wintertime to get a nice 991.1S at the right price. Tom

    Anyways, I’m not getting into my 997 for at least another year. Have to finish up my mid-life career transition. I’ll start looking seriously 12 - 18 months from now. I did like the look of the 991 C2S in North. Carolina, but I HAVE to have a 3rd pedal. Plus I just believe the 997 is the sweet spot in the 911 line up. Have you considered the 997 GT3. I’ve seen them from about $90K. If money were no object, that’s where I’d be looking. Everyone is different, but for me the older the model the better. Someday the 997 I can see it being the collector car (isn't it the last of 911 before Volkswagen?). The 991 is awesome! Especially the rear steering. However, they are way more expensive. My buddy who owns a 991 doesn't worry about cost. His worry is not 991 or 997, instead he is contemplating jet vs prop! All that said, no amount of cash would cause me to ditch my 996. To me (I'm a minority), the 996 is the perfect car.

    2.It is a poor GT car as it is too small for long journeys people plus luggage
    3.Automatic rules from now on.As Porsche try to appeal to non sports car drivers.Expand the market.Correct me but has the oil pressure gauge been removed?
    4.Driver comms have been improved as it becomes pretty inside an excellent ladies car.Wife can ow drive it!

    A 997.2 is the last 911 you can really enjoy the performance envelope of on the road. The 991+ goes beyond what is safe and sensible (to get your kicks) unless you only care for the track. What you really want is a manual 997.2 C2S or C4S with sports exhausts. No more is needed or any more desirable in reality. (IMO of course) - BTW - the 997.2 will probably be a better investment over 5-10 years too.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  5 років тому +1

      Are you saying the performance gains (such as greater BHP) in the 991 aren’t worth it? What you get in the 997 range is enough for normal road conditions? If so, i would tend to agree. My 997 C2 is ridiculously powerful and fast enough for me. I know it’s nowhere near as powerful as a Turbo or GT3, but I really don’t care about that. It’s more than enough car for me.

    • @richarddarsa6353
      @richarddarsa6353 5 років тому +1

      This is what I would suggest - keep the 997 and spend $25K (which I suppose you have to have anyway if you are upgrading) - and buy a 500SL about 5 years old - they all have low mileage, the massive depreciation on a 100K + car is finished, and a million toys (including massage seats!!), huge power when you do a mild remap for a few hundred bucks - you can easily get 500bhp + and loads more torque - the 4.7 litre twin turbo V8 is mega.The car is a lot lighter than you would think. Its the opposite end of the scale to the 997 - and will entertain hugely for very little money. You will then have your 'proper' GT car - a drop top hard top. You won't believe how quick and capable it feels! Go drive one!
