Gerald Albright on Tenor Saxophone. Nathaniel Phillips on Electric Bass. Marlon McClain on Electric guitar. Ricky Lawson on Drums. Marlon McClain and Nathaniel Phillips are from the Portland Oregon Jazz Funk R&B Band called Pleasure. Which that Band was formed back in the early 70's.
I've been following Jeff Lorber for at least 25 years. Usually I Love his stuff. I met him once in Frankfurt at the 'Messe', but he won't remember. I do and I'll never forget it. For me his 'Tune 88' was thé eye-opener into fusion. This version is even better than the original one.
Since 1976, got the best the best turn on! Water sign, .......was the 1. BRILLIANT music never ever gets OLD ..... magically delicious world, planets......forever. PEACE!
Love it Smokin' groove. Lorber is plain badass ! Lawson was killin' SOLID (what a loss) Bass and sax were spot on. This has been the opening tune for just about every set I have played in the past 30 years
Played Tune 88 with my HS combo, a very cool and hip tune even today! Is the Gerald Albright on tenor? Usually hear him on alto, his tenor sound is superb!
Geil, geil, geil!!! ("incredibly great" in german). Some Idiots call it "Fahrstuhlmusik" in Germany ("Elevator-Music"???). Jeff really kicks ass. Supercool.
Yeah...Nate Phillips plays some way cool bass. There's a version of Tune 88 with Brian Bromberg playing bass and that is pretty darned awesome too if you love bass like I do. Check it out.
For all of us "recovering dopers", I just did a "speedball" of Miles Davis, "In a Silent Way" and Jeff Lorber "Tune '88" Live at Java 2006...!!! Miles takes you one place, Jeff takes you another and the are both NARCOTIC !!!...I'm SERIOUS peeps...juxtapose the almost spiritual manifestation of what Miles is doing against the melodic, funky, rhythm and blues (ish)gifting of Jeff's imagination, you may just dig what I'm saying...
Didn't know Mr. Lorber also plays guitar.....why didn't I know that? There is Stevie Winwood after all as a precedent, a guy who can kill it on keyboards and still put on the guitar and scratch out a mean solo with Clapton or Dave Mason. I mean these guys really know how to show off and rub it in to those of us who dabble in musik.
So, Mr. Lorber was using a scratch or pick-up band for this festival performance....okay, but doesn't he have his own traveling and recording group called Fusion? I say scratch or pick-up band of course in jest....these fellows are all pro's in their own right.
johnmaer, this was probably an opportunity for a bunch of guys who respect each other to play together unless Lorber's band had prior engagements. Great sound.
its 2023...and...this STILL...KICKS🐐🐐🐐

"Outstanding" is not even close to sufficient. I guess superlative might work, but that seems weak. Mindblowing kind of works. Anyway I like it a lot.
