The remixed graphics imo are better, Im a retro gamer at heart but the graphics are def, a step up from the saturn. Also you guys didnt mention the game mechanics they added with the remix. There are light medium and heavy attacks now, no more hitting a button and flipping through your spells. you can do them with street fighter like button patterns. Also you can dash in mid air, and run forever. In the original you could run for a couple steps then you would stop. The new mechanics are better
Add this game to PSN and Ill get it and make all my PS3 friends get it, this game was freaking awesome back in the Sega Saturn, I love it!!! Make a number 2 already! Sometimes I believe Sega is not on the top because don´t want it!!
Guardian (and gunstar) heroes are made by treasure. Sure sega had a part in them, but that makes it a wee bit harder to make a sequel. also in advance guardian heroes, the entire cast (with rare exceptions like zur and kanon [which is kind of stupid considering that regardless of which path you take kanon get's killed]) is dead, then awakened, then their souls are absorbed by the protagonist. If another sequel ends up like that, I'd rather stick with the original.
I liked this game on the Saturn, the only problem I had with it was that sometimes there was so much going on it was hard to see where your character was and what he was doing. Thats when the game pretty much boiled down to button mashing.
@halo6534 Funny because in it's day Guardian Heroes was innovative. A beat-em-up/RPG/fighting game with a decision tree and a morality system about as advanced as what Bioware does still to this day. Multiple endings... all this in 1996! Today it's hard to notice just how innovative this was back then but it blew my mind... and it's still an awesome game too. It aged really well.
IGN is not complaining on the graphics themselves but on THE WAY THEY WERE REMIXED from the original, which is a fair point to be made. Plus 8.5 is a very good score, personally this review made me want to buy this game.
Guardian Heroes remains one of the greatest games of all time, and I think that this review was very fair to its legacy. Well played IGN...I don't get to say that often, so this was a nice change of pace.
@RedbeardLPs Go read their FULL review where they have posted EVERY bad thing the thought about the game. Remember, review are OPINION BASED. So when you watch a review, you will have to accept that it is opinion based after the reviewer and NOT after your opinion.
@Rrrrrrrriot guardian heroes was a 32bit game. Never an 8bit. That in mind you are correct. 8.5 is both a great score, and a fair score. Unless you are a Saturn fanboy (I STILL have mine hooked up, and I own every Working Designs game ever made, so I can sympathize) giving a beat em up like this a 10 is ludicrous. Even my favorite game of all time doesn't get a 10 in my book.
They said Treasue will make a sequel if this does well. I'm am all for it...it is nice to see games like this again...in a world filled with shooters. Don't get me wrong. I play some shooters.
+MisterX867 Yeah. I did buy it when it came out though, and since moved on to PC full time after I built my gaming rig in 2012. I picked another 360 up for $45 in mint condition over the summer, it was the phat model but the later one with HDMI, so that was a plus, and came with wireless controller and 20gb hdd, but hey, for that damn cheap I can't complain! I wish Sega would bring their full back catalog of PSN and 360 arcade games to Steam for more people to be able to play them. Such a shame that we never got hits like Daytona USA Arcade or Afterburner Climax.
am i missing something here? I loved the original gfx but the retouched hd gfx look amazing - the game is still the same so its a win win - clearer detail and just as chaotic!!! One of the finest beat em ups made - dont hesitate to DL!!!!
@MetroidCommando THANK YOU! Nice to see that someone agrees with that as well. I'm not sure why this review guy was so against it. I guess he's more of a purest when it comes to games and remakes and such. But I suppose it just goes to show 'to each his own'. :)
wait, it's the same classic game.. but with a shit tonne of great new features. this is what i think a remake should be.. this game deserves a 10 or a 9.5
@1bardh1 I didn't mean that Guardian Heroes in particular deserves a 10, I just meant that the only negative thing he mentioned really was the graphics, and it was an 8.5, if there was something else about it that made the game bad, they should have mentioned it instead of spending most of the video talking about the graphics.
@Badboy4c1 Please read the IGN written review before criticizing anything, what this person says has to be condensed into less than 3 minutes. The written reviews are much more detailed and gives you a rating for each category, please take a look at it, the people that don't and criticize need to learn.
Knocking a graphic option is an odd complaint, especially when the first sentence of this video review, it is stated it's completely optional. I want to know why the remix graphics option is even considered a downer by IGN- I mean, all these other "HD" remakes have terrible smudge-ridden water-color graphics when turning on their 'HD' graphics, yet with Guardian Heroes at least they tried and penciled in some shades to add a more 'comic' look with the Remixed graphics.
@VirtuaFighter5R Yeah, I don't get how people couldn't realize that this game is one of the primary inspirations for Castle Crashers, and made 12 years prior to boot. This game is the absolute shit. I remember playing this back in 97 or so and pooling our friends multitaps and controllers so we could play the six-player multiplayer, which is crazy-awesome.
@NinjaRawrz "You can't spell ignorant without IGN" Wow, did you make that up? That is just SO clever! It's not like there are thousands of other no-life trolls who spout that same nonsense! No, you're original. Quite the innovator.
@RedbeardLPs actually, it is a perfectly valid reason to not give the game a 10. If you say graphics aren't important then you are KIDDING yourself. When reviewing a game, many things go into the final score, which generally fall under Presentation, Story and Gameplay. If the graphics aren't good, then it obviously can't get a 10 because it fails in 1 of those categories.
@aaronbxiii fuck yeah, man. legend of oasis and guardian heroes are both in my top 5-10 ever. i literally NEVER hear anybody else give oasis it's props, it was the fucking best zelda-style game ever made. props & respect to you.
@RedbeardLPs my guess is that many gamers nowadays mainly want nice graphics, and this can be seen with such games as like COD where graphics really matter, and maybe IGN conformed to that because most of their fanbase has gone over to that side
@GlueNoob It's fine to complain about the graphics, sure the reviewer can do whatever he likes. But the graphics do look better then on the original. Pretty much every other reviewer agrees with that except this guy who actually likes the pixels. Still it's a good score for a classic game.
I've played castle crashers, got all the achievements and it's a great game :P This game also looks pretty fun and i ain't no SEGA fanboy either, tbh this game DOES however looks like a lotta fun :D
Has anyone siding with IGN truly given this game a shot, or looked closely at the footage of the remix mode? WHAT is so terrible about it? To put this in perspective, check out the "HD" versions of other ports to Xbox Live Arcade, namely the Genesis titles. A very poor filter was put over each game that blurred and distorted the graphics and made text unreadable. I prefer to play the Remix mode in GH because the hatched-shading, smooth outlines, and the special effects look great in HD.
I think what people forget is that they start from a score of 0 and build up from that, not start from 10 and destruct. It's honestly incredibly annoying seeing people bitch because a game didn't get a perfect 10.. most games deserve a score of less than 8, in my opinion. That said, that's all any of this is: opinion.
Try again. Graphics serve aesthetics. Aesthetics are what makes the identity and style of something, graphics are the cold part of the visual process. Graphics are the data, the code and the fidelity of what make the aesthetics. How do I know this? Anyone who understands and respects their differences tend to be those who have either had schooling or in field work done. I am the ladder in this situation.
Im gonna have to get this...wanted to play it so bad when it first released. I was saving for a PSX when the Saturn was surprise launched, I opted to still get my PSX...luckily
@Xerolt9 I certainly don't hate IGN and think 8.5 is a fine score. But the graphics complaint is weird. The game looks better then it ever did an ultimately whether or not they like the hand drawn look is an entirely subjective thing. Eurogamer liked the look quite a bit so it's a weird deduction. Still and awesome game, fine score for a 15 year old Saturn game and for my money this is the best beat-em-up of all time. Biowares morality system owes Guardian Heroes a huge debt.
@Mamoru0Hasukage Nope, they don't, "graphics" are what define and make up the "aesthetics" of a game. Aesthetics are anything that stimulates the visual cortex of the brain, graphics/what you see on screen does this. Graphics are the aesthetics of videogames like wall paper and carpet are the aesthetics of a living room.
What the hell happened to IGN? they used to be THE place to get game reviews, but now it's ALL about graphics with them, it's really annoying, sure graphics are pretty important but as long as the gameplay and story are there graphics dont matter at all. Giving a game an 8.5 instead of a 10 JUST because the graphics aren't perfect is ridiculous.
@Badboy4c1 Maybe because without the remixed-graphics is just the SAME GAME it was 15 years ago? It's like Bungie releasing Halo Anniversary without a graphics update. The Remixed graphs are a minus because they should have been better.
@Xerolt9 10 is not perfection. There's no such thing as a perfect game. 10 is for a masterpiece, a game that stands out and that is superior to the rest, but it doesn't mean it's perfect.
@megadeth887 lol? There are more games out there than cod kid this is a classic and it's pretty fun stop hating cuz u were probably born when it came out .
I disagree, the HD updated graphics are awesome!!!! Best game ever!!!!!!
I still play this awesome kick ass game on my Sega Saturn, one of my favorite games of all-time
Now back compat on Xbox One!
It is
Played Advanced Guardian Heroes... Was looking for reviews to this game
one of the 30 best sega saturn games out there!
The remixed graphics imo are better, Im a retro gamer at heart but the graphics are def, a step up from the saturn. Also you guys didnt mention the game mechanics they added with the remix. I'd love for this to be on steam
Add this game to PSN and Ill get it and make all my PS3 friends get it, this game was freaking awesome back in the Sega Saturn, I love it!!! Make a number 2 already! Sometimes I believe Sega is not on the top because don´t want it!!

i have never played or heard of this game. was looking for a BeatEm Up and this name kept coming up in forums. going to give it a shot
@halo6534 Funny because in it's day Guardian Heroes was innovative. A beat-em-up/RPG/fighting game with a decision tree and a morality system about as advanced as what Bioware does still to this day. Just got this for 84p on Xbox deals with gold 👌🏼
Guardian Heroes remains one of the greatest games of all time, and I think that this review was very fair to its legacy. Well played IGN...I don't get to say that often, so this was a nice change of pace.
WHY ISNT THIS ON PSN YET?! It looks like so much fun and unfortunately I never had the original...
Being able to play every single character in the game including helpless villagers was awesome 🤩
@RedbeardLPs
Go read their FULL review where they have posted EVERY bad thing the thought about the game.
Remember, review are OPINION BASED. So when you watch a review, you will have to accept that it is opinion based after the reviewer and NOT after your opinion.
What is Code of Princess? I looked it up, but only saw ATLAS as the developer, not TREASURE. Maybe you were mistaken?
@Rrrrrrrriot guardian heroes was a 32bit game. Never an 8bit. That in mind you are correct. 8.5 is both a great score, and a fair score. Unless you are a Saturn fanboy (I STILL have mine hooked up, and I own every Working Designs game ever made, so I can sympathize) giving a beat em up like this a 10 is ludicrous. 0:18 graphic
0:21 graphic
1:04 graphic
2:27 graphic
2:40 -remix graphic
i'm counting it ign
They said Treasue will make a sequel if this does well. I'm am all for it...it is nice to see games like this again...in a world filled with shooters. Don't get me wrong. I play some shooters.
@BelieveTheCraze thank you fo rsaying that im also tired of people hating on ign thank you for being a mature person.
@RedbeardLPs 8.5 is a pretty good score, not every game you enjoy deserves a 10/10
Jus downloaded to my 360
Fucking sucks that this was a 360 exclusive
+MisterX867 Yeah. I did buy it when it came out though, and since moved on to PC full time after I built my gaming rig in 2012. I picked another 360 up for $45 in mint condition over the summer, it was the phat model but the later one with HDMI, so that was a plus, and came with wireless controller and 20gb hdd, but hey, for that damn cheap I can't complain!

MisterX867 I jus downloaded it today 😂😂😂
You know, The only thing I really miss from the original... is the intro x) Dunno why but it always made me smile :)
Just got it & this game rocks! Treasure has made some great games.
Guardian Heroes is one of the top ten games of all time. I love it to death.
am i missing something here? I loved the original gfx but the retouched hd gfx look amazing - the game is still the same so its a win win - clearer detail and just as chaotic!!! One of the finest beat em ups made - dont hesitate to DL!!!!
I loved this game on the Saturn, knew it was only a matter of time til it hit Arcade.
The best beat em up ever made! Prove me wrong!
If you don't play this game, turn in your gamer card.
@MetroidCommando THANK YOU! Nice to see that someone agrees with that as well. I'm not sure why this review guy was so against it. I guess he's more of a purest when it comes to games and remakes and such. But I suppose it just goes to show 'to each his own'. :)
wait, it's the same classic game.. but with a shit tonne of great new features.
this is what i think a remake should be.. this game deserves a 10 or a 9.5
@Badboy4c1 Word dude IGN does kinda grind my gears with reviews once in a while
95% of the review was just debating the graphics which are OPTIONAL!!!!!!!
Do you save your levels gained in this or does it reset every play through?
@RedbeardLPs no its not, its perfectly reasonable. Graphics are just as important as anything else!
Yup. the daddy of Gaurdian Heroes revived his game as Code of Princess with some plot points reworked.
1:04 How? That makes no sense...
This Deseved a 9 at least
@1bardh1 I didn't mean that Guardian Heroes in particular deserves a 10, I just meant that the only negative thing he mentioned really was the graphics, and it was an 8.5, if there was something else about it that made the game bad, they should have mentioned it instead of spending most of the video talking about the graphics.
The idea is that if its in the game and is bad it doesn't matter if it's optional.
The remixed graphics look great! It's not even a downer, and "They don't do anyone any favours"? REALLY?!!!
Wow this looks great I so wanna play, why the heck ain't it on PSN?!
@Badboy4c1 Please read the IGN written review before criticizing anything, what this person says has to be condensed into less than 3 minutes. The written reviews are much more detailed and gives you a rating for each category, please take a look at it, the people that don't and criticize need to learn.
Yup, guardian heroes here is the best side scroller on earth. Also a very good fighter.
@XINKAI it is, but online only. but last i checked it was 4 play offline too
Knocking a graphic option is an odd complaint, especially when the first sentence of this video review, it is stated it's completely optional.
Guardian Heroes is so Metal!
They and alot of people here need to understand the difference between graphics and aesthetics.
@Redey59 yeah all the characters have their own attacks and such
I felt like I was watching an educational video on PBS from the '90s.(but not in a bad way.)

"You can't spell ignorant without IGN"
Wow, did you make that up? That is just SO clever! It's not like there are thousands of other no-life trolls who spout that same nonsense! No, you're original. Quite the innovator.
why the fuck would remix graphics be a bad thing? they look just fine! A REVIEW SHOULD BE BASED NOT ON OPINON BUT ON FACTS
this was one of the best games i have ever played and had a lot of fun with my m8s back in the day
@RedbeardLPs actually, it is a perfectly valid reason to not give the game a 10. If you say graphics aren't important then you are KIDDING yourself. When reviewing a game, many things go into the final score, which generally fall under Presentation, Story and Gameplay. as chaotic as it sound?
well, your review as chaotic as it sound.....
i don't see the point in taking 1.5 off of a game just for graphics especially when the game is good
They better not negate points from the HALO CE remake for the "new graphics".
@aaronbxiii fuck yeah, man. legend of oasis and guardian heroes are both in my top 5-10 ever. i literally NEVER hear anybody else give oasis it's props, it was the fucking best zelda-style game ever made. props & respect to you.
@Xerolt9 Well considering the fact that people upload 45 minute videos, I'm pretty sure IGN can fit everything into the video.
@RedbeardLPs
my guess is that many gamers nowadays mainly want nice graphics, and this can be seen with such games as like COD where graphics really matter, and maybe IGN conformed to that because most of their fanbase has gone over to that side
Umm what system can we get that game on?
@GlueNoob It's fine to complain about the graphics, sure the reviewer can do whatever he likes. But the graphics do look better then on the original. Pretty much every other reviewer agrees with that except this guy who actually likes the pixels. Still it's a good score for a classic game.

@RedbeardLPs This is 2011 man, not the 20th century anymore.
I think what people forget is that they start from a score of 0 and build up from that, not start from 10 and destruct. @xSeiGx So if that ET game had Battlefield graphics but retained its exact gameplay story etc., it wud make it a good game?
how is remixed graphicks a bad thing
just because you prefre the oraginal visuals dosnt mean its a bad thing
Holy fuck i love this game.... I can't believe its on 360...
Wtf was that move @ 1:45? Ive never seen that before
Im gonna have to get this...wanted to play it so bad when it first released. I was saving for a PSX when the Saturn was surprise launched, I opted to still get my PSX...luckily
Did they really just minus points cause there is an option to play with nicer graphics?
The ladder in this situation?
@alphafour The graphics aren't bad, its just a different art style to what you're used to.
@Xerolt9 I certainly don't hate IGN and think 8.5 is a fine score. But the graphics complaint is weird. @RedbeardLPs NOT just that i know what an embargo is now to....
dam old memories i miss the saga saturn
man i played this back on the sega saturn for years!!! this and dragon force
@RedbeardLPs I'm really glad you arent a game reviewer, because you'd clearly just give every game a 10
This game looks so cool.
Treasure isn't developing Code of Princess.
seriously ign? You gave it a strike because of the remixed graphics? You can choose to turn them off! HOW IS THAT A FLAW!?
@Mamoru0Hasukage Nope, they don't, "graphics" are what define and make up the "aesthetics" of a game. Aesthetics are anything that stimulates the visual cortex of the brain, graphics/what you see on screen does this. * Treasure...typo
I like the music in the game

Ugh I wish this was on psn
holy crap - looks awesome
Still waiting for someone to put the Simpson's beat'm up on xbox live already!
@Badboy4c1
Maybe because without the remixed-graphics is just the SAME GAME it was 15 years ago?
It's like Bungie releasing Halo Anniversary without a graphics update. The Remixed graphs are a minus because they should have been better.

there's never not not nuttin

@megadeth887 lol? There are more games out there than cod kid this is a classic and it's pretty fun stop hating cuz u were probably born when it came out .
