I’m pretty sure I saw this game in Next Generation magazine. They actually did label it as Guardian Heroes and talked about it being a different version of the Sega Saturn game. I’m not sure why Sega keeps rereleasing the Genesis mini and not a Saturn mini. The Saturn is my favorite console of all time. I have nothing but extremely great memories with it.
I only found out about panzer bandit because I was desperate for my guardian heroes fix, and at the time I couldn't play GH on my Saturn or emulators. Turns out Panze Bandit was actually pretty good but for me it didn't have the same staying power. It's not really fair for me to compare those two since GH was something I would rent every other week and play with friends over and over again, while Panzer Bandit I had to play by myself.
6:44 what's that cartoon picture bottom left? I used to watch that as a kid, what was it called? found it googling for "sneer". the name cedric came back to my mind. it's "the racoons" canadian tv show, cedric was one character. (also the animal is an aardvark)
I only know that cartoon from a commercial on an old cartoon VHS I had... and after googling around for it, I also heard the intro theme for it. It is FAR more higher quality and serious than fits the show, "Run With Us" is the name and I highly recommend it.
I too read about this on Hardcore Gaming 101, AND I saw it on sale in an auction once for like... 180 USD (Or the approximate equivalent or so for 1899 SEK), which was a bit richer than I was willing to part with even if it is an unsung cult classic.
Have you had a look at Gunner’s Heaven aka Rapid Reload? It’s another PS1 release that didn’t reach the US (though it did get an EU release), that happens to play very much like Treasure’s Gunstar Heroes. BTW YuYu Hakusho doesn’t have an "s" in it (not counting the "sh" which is part of a different letter/phoneme/kana)… and you kinda drop the "u" when pronouncing it, so it’s like "you you hock show"
excellent video! A+ channel. i discovered this gem around 2015 when i decided to go on a Japanese PSX 2D game import deep dive. discovered about two dozen import/english friendly absolute gems before my wallet turned to dust. I can absolutely recommend Gunners Heaven, Wolf Fang, Gear Fighter Dondoh and Adventures of Little Ralph. if you want something decidedly japanese and wacky in premise, 70s Robot Anime Geppy-X (the game is modeled as a fictional 70s robot anime tv show, compete with an opening song and credits song at the start/end of each level, weird stuff.)
Wow I covered both Panzer Bandit and Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds in previous videos! Sneer mode engaged. What's this guardian heroes thing then? Never heard of it! 😉
I bought this in my quest to own every PS1 game with 2D graphics back then. Always wondered why it didn't get more famous, but alas... I guess it came out at the wrong time.
Calling Guardian Heroes Ps1 version is really bad. This game was based on Mad Stalker for the first place, Panzer Bandit are more technical in term of gameplay
"So Panzer Bandit was influenced by Guardian Heroes and that game’s precursor Yu Yu Haskusho Makyō Tōitsusen, but used the engine of Mad Stalker: Full Metal Forth which was in turn a big influence on Guardian Heroes, meaning Panzer Bandit was based on a game that inspired the game that inspired it. Clear? Clear." Actual words spoken in the video.
Guardian Heroes is the reason I bought Saturn. When I finally bought PSX? Was surprised there are “clone” of Guardian Heroes in Panzer Bandit. Kinda downgraded one but still cool game ha ha
Say hello to a game I didn't even know existed until a month or two ago. STILL LEARNING.
As someone who is obsessed with the 5th and 6th generation of consoles I have known about this game for quite a while.😁

This looks a lot of fun. Sad it didn't get localized. Its pixel sprites have aged better than most early ps1 polygon games.
There is a remaster that released on the xbox 360 or xbox one. I can't remember what generation it came out.

I want to thank you for this one video. It was really a discovery for me.
Thank you for shedding light on these niche titles on my favorite console--I always enjoy your videos, Bransfield. Cheers, my friend
Have you ever came across Notam of Wind on the PS1 Ian? Just discovered that myself, amazing game.
Never heard of it, but I just looked at it and I feel like I've seen it before...
Thanks for the new-to-me beat-em-up. I'll be giving this a go with a pal come my next games night. :)
Never knew either game but both look gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

I was furious that the Guardian Heroes remaster didn't come to playstation. I nearly bought an xbox one just to play this.... nearly.
Im doing a game inspired on guardian heroes and little fighters, love this game
The horror, the horror, and there's no remake for PS4 or 5 the HORROR!!
Dam, the playstation version didn't let you play as the black knight

The most gracefully aged PS1 games are the 2d ones
I emulated this game and this game is AWSOME
The PS2 had one. Tales of Rebirth has a battle system very reminiscent of Guardian Heroes.
There were a couple of Sega clones on the ps1, this, rapid reload and brave proven.

This looks cool. Never heard of it before. Worst pronunciation of yu yu hakusho ever tbh tho.
