  • @beamonm29

Keep the first 2 rounds as kinetic and the rest max. If the second round is max/pepper it can get an indention that effects flight path and cause it to curve at longer distances ie 30 ft-ish and miss the target. Plus generally the first 2 kinetic rounds will stop/slow a person advancing causing them to remain in the effect area of the max/pepper even just a tad longer. Plus I like the extra kinetic in case of something like a car jacker coming trough the window or such. Up close and personal isnt the best for pepper because inside a vehicle it will affect you as well. So if in the rush of things you miss or the first shot is deflected then you have another before mutual bombardment.
One tip from learned experience is if someone if running at you and you pepper them take a deep breath and hold it in case they stumble to you. you may still get some agitation such as what happened in this video but it wont be as bad as it could be. They will carry some loose particles with them and around them but as long as you hold your breath most should settle enough. Of course it wont be as bad as the target gets it but it still sucks and the less inhaled is always better.

@@garybolenable I don't know if it's ocd or what but I don't like the thought of sandwiching different rounds. Granted I could see the advantages of keeping the last one kinetic. First two to slow target and give them a chance to reconsider, next two to make them really start to regret it, and then that last kinetic you could probably take your second to aim for the groin as a final F*ck you, I'm really gonna make you regret your decision. Cherry on top of the FAFO cake. Might test it and see if I can carry like that but just on thinking it I'm like ehhhhh. Not even sure why.

@@garybolenable I have a buddy who is a sheriff and he says the max is a bit worse then OC spray. He says the spray clings to its target with some vapors and particulates whereas the max just seems to invade every orifice and any movement cause more particulates and just re-applys it. He even took his pants off because they were releasing it as well. He's been oc'd several times and says he rathers that then them damn things.

Turns out it’s not a ball problem, but is a Spring problem. Which may be a hard spring. There is softer springs, I know this cause I made the extended magazine for 11 rounds and also the drum which holds 20-25 rounds. This all comes down to the spring. With a softer spring there’s less pressure on the balls and they won’t crack then.

Any one who says pepper rounds are not effective for self defense has never been hit with one. Had my wife...who I bought a Byrna for...hit me in the abdomen. Shit Dude...the rounds impact was bad enough, but the resulting pepper pain is nothing I want to experience again. Took a good two days to get the smell out of my nose. Great, Great, Great, self defense option for areas and countries where actual firearms are restricted. Any viewers don't believe me? Try it for yourself. Don't have a Byrna? O.K. Take five jalapeno peppers...boil them in a cup of water...cool to room temperature and then throw them in your own face. Get the picture? No...you won't...you won't be able to see the picture or anything else for about an hour and a half. Great video.

I think the Umarex revolver would be a better option to avoid ammo cracking, and you can get pepper sabot rounds that won't work in a Byrna, but are more accurate. However, I also wonder about the powder caking over time and making the rounds way less effective. Keeping the bulk of your powder ammo stored vacuum sealed with desiccant is probably a good idea. Also, a way to store the whole launcher in a vacuum chamber would be useful. There are kitchen vacuum containers that would work fine for this. Umarex also has a stubby shotgun style launcher with double this muzzle energy, and the Umarex use the 12g C02.

The Byrna HD heavily robs from the design of the Raysun 92. If you look at the design, the trigger sticking issue is generally related not to the trigger itself but the moving barrel. Shoot some silicon lube along the outside of your barrel and it should resolve the issue. I ve bought-tuned and sold over a dozen Byrnas and any trigger issues were solved this way. FYI out of the box Byrna tunes these to around 250 FPS so you can get several mags out of a single CO2..I tune them to closer to 300 FPS and you still get at least two mags out of a CO2 but the impact is far more dramatic and effective.. and that’s with Grimberg Jul rounds which are more than double the weight of the Byrna balls. Lastly, keep a hardball in the chamber and you shouldn’t have any pepperball breakage issues.

I now spray my byrna and pepperrounds with a silicone spraycan to keep pepperounds from going brittle and hopefully prevent cracking. By the way I tried a paintball in the byrna...yes the paintball burst inside the gun...do not shoot paintballs they are too weak and exlode inside breach...

Very informative 👏, thanks much, hope you recovered in the meantime 😁... reading all the comments about breaking max rounds, it's probably best not to load 5+1, put in a kinetic on top and/or just load with 4 and carry a spare magazine to go easy on the spring...I got the carry bag, not too big but big enough to put wallet, keys and some other little stuff besides the launcher, 3 more magazines and 2 spare Co2's...my practice so far was without problems, always got at least 24 shots out of the 8 gram cartridge. Made my spouse, even if she didn't want at first, practicing too...in the end she loved it....the only thing that annoys me is that they never have enough stock on the foldable target 😠...😁 .... using shipping 📦 for now ...just did the CA teargas certification so I finally can buy the max and pepper, too

Just remember that you can't defend yourself using pepper balls inside of 5 feet. You will be peppered too. That is VERY important as most encounters occur within 5 feet of your attacker.
So you have a gun looking thing you can't fire if you load pepper balls first. My magnum doesn't effect me no matter how close you are when attacking me. My pepper balls will get both you and me peppered at close range. Then it's who recovers first and gets the launcher that is in control. Huh? Yep...
So ALWAYS LOAD SOLID BALLS FIRST TO DRIVE THE ATTACKER BACK!!!!
Then if you need to discharge a chemical round you are still in control.
Don't let guesses control your loads, anyone got a photo of a deformed pepper ball from loading the thing properly with solid balls first?
      Yea that's what I thought.
Don't forget to replace your chemical rounds after around 5 years and NEVER LEAVE THE GUN IN YOUR CAR AND GO INSIDE SOMEPLACE!!!
      NOT EVEN FOR A MOMENT!!!!!
Heat will cause the pepper ammo to degrade, not only the shell, but the potency too and it's useless if you are not in constant control of it, be it a plastic ball or a cannon ball!!!!
Get with the program of knowledge instead of rumor. Load it properly 2 solid then chemical rounds, carry it and watch it at all times and then you will know instead of guessing.
Deformed pepperballs? Sounds like a bad episode of southpark.

DEFINATALLY want to use a kinetic round in the first position... The clip holds 5 rounds (Byrna SD) so load your clip with all pepper rounds then turn the gun upside down and drop a kinetic ball in the handle and Insert the clip.
Now not only do you have 6 shots instead of 5 you will never have the problem of a pepper round breaking. But that's not the only advantage!!!
If your attacker is very close to you and you fire a pepper round out of panic both of you will fell the effects. You don't want to be peppered by you own round as you will also be down along side the attacker!!! Then "it's who recovers from the pepper ball first" that can determine the outcome.
So the first shot (in a panic fire situation) should be to drive your attacker back. The kinetic round should do that without problems as the attacker won't know if they have been shot with a lethal gun, these things (kinetic balls) pack quite a whollup at close range so the natural reaction will be to back away and look at the spot they were hit to see the damage...
This gives you time to separate the distance between you and him (or her to be politically correct).
This strategy also gives you more time to compose yourself and decide if any further shots need to be used.
If the attacker doesn't run away you can shoot several pepper rounds at a safe distance without succumbing to your own pepper ball powder and call 911.
If you both get peppered no one is in charge of that situation.
    Remember this...
Shooting a lethal gun won't effect you no matter how close you are to your attacker, a pepper ball round can put you both on the ground if used too close to the assailant.
So always (my opinion only) use a kinetic ball first and then you have 5 pepper ball rounds if you need them.
Solves the broken pepper ball problem for storage and the "oops we both got peppered and are incapacitated on the first shot" problem.

@@musk-eteer9898 Well first I actually shoot mine quite a bit and second I NEVER leave my gun in a hot car or under my pillow or in a nightstand at home while I'm somewhere else. That being said I have a clip that's loaded with solid and pepper rounds that have been in that clip for months hidden at home that shows NO, let's say that again, NO deformation what so ever. 5 rounds in the spare clip and one in the chamber for home protection. So 2 clips, one for carry and practice, one at home that is clipped up when I'm there sleeping.
Funny thing when you actually change clips for different purposes (one for carry and one for home) ya tend to look at the projectiles often. When you buy a gun (ANY gun) and put it somewhere and never interact with it, it creates more questions and problems than it would ever be worth as protection.
This seems to be the problem with all the shootings going on now. Bought a gun and then put it in the night stand or under your pillow and forgot about it? And then something happens and you are either no where near the gun or it get's stolen while you are someplace else and used in a crime.
Bottom line? No problems loading solid and pepper rounds in a mixed fashion.
I recommend 2 solid rounds to drive the attacker back so you don't pepper yourself firing it and then 4 rounds of pepper. Just looked at my home clip as I wrote this, has been hidden for 6 months, no deformation at all, no problems at all with it and remember this is my spare clip, the carry clip is also in perfect working order and has never been a problem.
So actually look and see for yourself to find the truth about this problem and NEVER LEAVE YOUR GUN IN A HOT CAR!!!! Carry the damn thing with you or lock it up at home, inside and in a climate controlled environment.
Guessing that these products have a expiration of around 5 years so replace them when they get old.
BTW over 450 guns have been stolen from cars already this year in my area alone so use it (as in keep it in your possession not stored somewhere silly) or loose it.
If you are paying attention and properly carrying/storing these guns you will know by watching it over time that it's perfectly fine to carry 6 shots of mixed ammo in these pepper guns.
You must know instead of guessing....
...there is only one way to know and a thousand other ways to guess.
      Know what I'm saying?
