1994 Chev S10 gas to diesel conversion

  • My converted S10 gas to diesel truck. It was a 4.3 vortec V6 gas engine with an automatic transmission, I removed them both and installed the Isuzu C223 4 cylinder diesel, with a Borg Warner T5 5 speed, which came with the engine. Conversion was fairly straight-forward, not a lot of fabrication required to make things work.
    It's quite underpowered, it's slow accelerating, though once up to speed it's not so bad. Fuel mileage is amazing for a truck. I haven't run the tank to near empty, but have seen 600kms at 1/2 tank left, so I think I should get 1000kms from the tank (just the stock tank - 13 imp gal I believe). I haven't owned a vehicle yet where 1/2 tank was exactly half of the distance you can travel on a tankful.
    It's different. Most guys who modify their drive trains put in bigger engines, typically V8's, however I went for something different, unique, and cheap to drive. I can still haul all an S10 can (or more), and have hauled my trailer with a ton of steel, for a total weight of almost 7100 lbs. I just didn't haul it quickly.
    I hope you enjoy the vid.
    For the first time, I tried to see how far I could get on a tank of fuel (usually I fill it weekly). The fuel gauge was in the red, though I didn't run out, it was at 1009kms when I filled it.

    The conversion to American MPG for those wondering:
    6L/100km ~ 39.2 MPG
    That's better than most compact sedans. You're my hero.

    • @mibars
      @mibars 8 років тому +2

      +AcornFox This is ridiculusly low fuel consumption for a pickup! Since this motor is just 58hp I believe he does not drive it fast though. For a comparison a 2001 Nissan Micra, 800kg city car with 1.0L 60hp petrol engine gets around 7L/100km when driven on short distances and highways not exceeding 120 km/h.

      +Alexander Moffitt well over 300hp?? I don't think so. The 5.7 vortec in the 1500 made 250hp in 1996 and 255hp from 1997-end of production.

    Great job on the conversion... To some of the commentors that are wishing for a factory option. There is a new Chevy Colorado coming, that will have a diesel option. Also the next Nissan Titan will have a 5liter V8 Diesel from Cummins, and RAM has a 3Liter V6 Diesel. I suspect the Colorado will be the only really fuel efficient one. Though the RAM does decently for a larger pickup. Just FYI for you guys.

      sure if i want to spend $60k on a diesel pickup at least its brand new and technically under warranty it also only gets like 28-30mpg and i cant work on it myself cause 1: its voids the warranty and 2: it was designed so i cant work on it myself...also there have already been a few recalls on them

    I have to congratulate you on this achievement. I use to have a 1984 Mazda B2200 which had just about the same performance as your S10 and I just loved it. It didn't matter how slow on the pickup it was it was plenty fast enough and so much fun to drive with the stick shift. 58 HP, max speed of 132 km/HR, 7 liters/100 in the city and the worst I ever did in snow and short trips was 36 mpg. Chicago to Ottawa (just under 1400 kilometers on less than a tank (66 liters) of diesel. I sure miss it.

    What I can tell you, it is FANTASTIC! A great installation! I used to do this for living in here, my country Panama, installing Detroi Diesel an those engine you have. I have in here a Chevy C/K 1500 and fuel is killing me. I have an idea in doing the conversion to diesel, but I want to keep the automatic transmission. I need to get the engine, make an adapter plate and have the flex plate built. Or can get a diesel with the automatic and save money. Some guy offered a Mercedes 5 cyl with an automatic trans, but I know they don't have the power I want. I have the original motor 4.3 L! It runs perfect for the age. I had a vete in California and almost installed a diesel in it! I think I'm too crazy, especially at my age!!! Great job man, you;re good! One of my crazy installation was the Datsun 510, 1970's, installed a 355 cuin, 370 hp, transmission was a 4 speed rock crusher. This made me get the contracts with Detroit Diesel! Enjoy man, you're good!

      tonycavez The Chevette had a different Isuzu engine than the Luv or Pup had (and the S10/S15). Not sure about the European versions though. The Chevette (and Acadian) engine was less hp and overhead cam, and revved higher, to name a few differences. However, the conversion was not a very difficult one...just a matter of figuring everything out, and about 100 hours of time.

    Zack, Great job on your truck. Very nicely done. I have a 1984 GMC S-10 with that very engine. Cool setup. I want to commend you on your details of various things you spoke about in your video. Those will be most helpful to anyone else looking to do the same thing. I am currently working on putting a MB Turbo in my 92 S-10. This weekend I should get a fair amount done to it, plan on posting a video as I go along as well. For what it is worth, the engine you put in your truck has a timing belt. Not a chain. I found out a couple of months ago. Fortunately, all I had to replace was the belt. Had 90k on the engine. So if you have not, look into doing it. Have a great day.

  • @ZackaryMac
    @ZackaryMac  11 років тому

    Thanks for the compliments! The truck came with a 3.42, I switched it with a 3.73. The truck revs enough now on the highway, about 2800rpm at 100k/hr, so the shorter gearing would only make it rev higher. Too low an rpm isn't good either. The 3.73 works pretty well for my driving style and terrain. No doubt with a 4.10 it would keep speed better on hills, but it would sound awful busy, fuel mileage might not be as good either, I don't know . This engine redlines at 4200rpm, not very high.

    From my calculations, done by filling the tank to the top, the same way every time, I average 43-45mpg (Imp gallons) during the summer. I've measured as high as 50 mpg. That's down around the 6.3 L/100Km range. It gets almost double what my 2000 S10 4cly auto ext cab truck I drive for the winter. This engine's technology is not modern, I'm told it dates from the early 70's, however it gives me exactly what I built it for: great MPG. A new high-tech engine would be better.

    The safety switch you're talking about is hooked to the clutch pedal itself, not the transmission. When I removed the dash and installed the clutch pedal assembly, I never installed the safety switch in with it, so it is possible to start it with the starter, while in gear. The switch was gone, I didn't bother to find a new one. If I'm not mistaken, the '95 was the last year with the BW transmission, as I think they went to New Venture after that. Also, I believe all the 4.3s has NV.

I'm thinking about putting in a tractor diesel in, height might be an issue with that though and I don't want a cowl. People have done this with f150's and gotten over 30mpg so I figure I could come out pretty well myself. These tractor engines only have about 40ish hp so a turbo and some fueling upgrades would be a must!

    Awesome man. If you're up to trying another conversion with a little more oomph that still gets amazing mileage, try a Cummins 4BT, or a much smoother Detroit 353T. I had a 353T in my '91 Chevy full sized 3/4 ton conversion van with an old Allison mechanical automatic, and it got between 26-34 mpg. Still could get up to speed on the highway ok, and pull my firewood trailer! Turbos will help that aspect of a small 2-3 litre diesel, tremendously, and as long as you do the speed limit once you're there, give an INCREASE in highway mileage.

    • @ZackaryMac
      @ZackaryMac  6 років тому

      NintendoCrescendo I have a 2005 Jetta TDI wagon with a lot of miles on it that, along with a small utility trailer, makes a better truck on the highway than this one. I enjoyed this truck, it was fun making it, but I sold it after driving it 7 years. I had made one previously, same thing using a 1991 S10, and I drove that truck 7 years also. The Jetta has better power by a lot, even better mpg, certainly isn't as unique, but is more practical.
      I was always told the old 2 strokes were hard on fuel, but you say they were decent? Do they have much for bottom end torque? Noisy? I like the idea of it.

    • @guerrillaradio9953
      @guerrillaradio9953 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, they are loud if you don't muffle them well, but I wrapped the turbo (hot side), down pipe, put rock wool inside the doghouse, and used a really big muffler made for a stock diesel pickup I got for free from my bud because he put some loud pipe on his Ford. It wasn't really bad at all, honestly. The semi-sized 9-15L V8-V12 2-strokes drank fuel like it was water for sure, but this is a 2.6L with a turbo, and I even got my original cruise control to work! Plus, if you can track down the "heavy equipment junkyard" nearest you, a guy can usually pick one up in good condition for maybe $500.

    Great work... Now add a turbo w/charge inter-cooler, enrich the fuel setting just enough to match the increase in air-charge w/o much smoke, plus go with a somewhat numerically larger (lower) final-drive gear in the axle, and yank the T-5 & fit it's input-shaft to a T-56 from a 4th-gen F-body (Camaro, Firebird/Trans-Am) to slip in it's place. THEN see how she performs! (

    • @tonycavez
      @tonycavez 7 років тому +2

      don't do it that way enriching means more fuel more smoke, add a turbo under the truck no need for special manifold any turbo will do and no need for intercooler as the turbo will run a lot cooler ,then add propane or GNV injection no smoke less pollution lots of more power much better mileage and cheaper to run I have done that on my GMC 6.5 ,plus I have also done something else on my Mercedes 300 sd I built water a bubbler and insted of using water I use windshield washer fluid vaporized by the bubbler and into the air intake .now that diesel never was so powerful or ran so good and better mileage too ( w. w. fluid is 20 % methanol so I"m adding oxigen hydrogen and methanol vapors ,it's the cheaper way to get power and mileage similar to a hydrogen generator,one of these days I'm going to try on one of my gasoline cars

      Internals of the engine need to be rated for a turbo and alot of things will need to be adjusted for the added air. With added power he'll need an upgraded clutch, and its always a good idea to intercool a turbo'd engine. He'll need a new exhaust manifold and down pipe as well. Theres alot that goes into putting a turbo on an engine that didnt come from factory with one.

      This engine is actually well suited for a turbo, as it even has oil cooling jets under the pistons. I just didn't want to get into making a turbo exhaust manifold, as finding one is very difficult, and there is very little room to fit one, as my steering column is right in the way of it. As Jake said, plumbing, inter-cooling, clutching, etc makes the job bigger than what I am interested in doing. It would make more power for certain, but this works ok for me.

    I had thought of using the Cummins, but they are hard to find locally, they are expensive when you do find one, they weigh about 300lbs heavier than the Isuzu, and the Isuzu was a simple bolt up to the transmission, whereas the 4bt would be a lot more work. No doubt they work very well in the S10, though.

    ZackaryMac Did you have to modify your wiring in any way to accommodate the diesel? Is the towing with the diesel better than the gas 4.3 v-6? Very innovate BTW!

    A turbo would help for sure, and they were available, but not common. I haven't seen the turbo version myself. I considered adding one, but there is very limited room on the exhaust side, thanks to the steering column. The engine design is based from the early 70's, and though a good engine, just doesn't have a chance against the newer emission rules.

  • @ZackaryMac

    Sure, jsc. The engine/transmission came from a mid 80's diesel S10. From what I can tell, they were more common in Canada than the US. If you can get a complete truck, all the better. The hardest part to find is the bellhousing that mates the Borg Warner to the diesel engine. Otherwise, with the S10 diesel, it is almost a drop-in, as long as you have the diesel motor mounts also. Some have put Isuzu Pup diesel engines in their S10's, but there is more work required for this.

    Ive been wanting to put a 49 Chevy coupe deluxe body on a Chevy S10 frame as they have almost the exact same dimentions.
    A diesel swap was my first idea beyond the body swap, i hope this still works with similar dimentions only difference being
    a 70 year old car body over a more modern small truck with a diesel engine swap...
    Sounds Krazy but thats my name.

    You will have to remember to gear it for the slow-revving tractor engine, lots of them don't rev to 3000rpm. I know of 2 Ford conversions with Perkins engines....they were slow, but great on fuel.

    Did you have to make your own motor mounts? How about the exhaust system? Was that custom made too. Also, was it hard to wire up the speedometer, fuel gauge and other various gauges to match up the Chevy S10 and the Isuzu hardware? Enquiring minds would like to know.

    • @ZackaryMac
      @ZackaryMac  7 років тому

      The motor mounts came with the engine and literally bolted to holes already in the frame. The exhaust was custom made from the manifold back about 3 feet where it met up with the stock v6 exhaust system, minus the cat. The speedo was a bit tricky...I had to mate the early diesel BW T5 transmission with a later T5 that had a electric speedo drive to make the stock speedo work. The water temp and oil pressure sensors were the original from the V6, and screwed right into place on the diesel, so they matches the gauges. Volts and fuel of course didn't change.
