I own a 2002 S10 Sport with the 2.2 Liter..I put 18×9 IROCZ Chrome on aluminum wheels with P255/55 Goodyears on rear & P245/55 on front..I had Magnaflow Mufflers with Split Exhaust twice piped underneath the rear bumper..it's got 110,000 original miles put on by me..Rust Free Bought from O'Reilly Chevrolet Tucson, Arizona 🏜
That same engine was also used in the Chevrolet Cavalier, of which I had a '97 year model once. On top of that, mine had the 3-speed automatic. All in all, it's not the worst engine out there. Also, the exhaust on that truck sounded very nice! I wish my old Cavalier did that, lol.
I've owned 3. Great little trucks, no real mechanical issues. My advice: 5 Speed over the Automatic (especially in the 2.20 Four). You need the gear selection to keep the right power band, automatics lug it down. Second: Stick with the 2.20 - Four with the 5 Speed. Great gas mileage; over 20 around town; upwards 28+ highway. The 4.30 V-6 has plenty of power, but fuel economy suffers. In the little S-10, v-6 mileage is MINIMALLY better than a FULL SIZE CHEVY with the V-8. S-10 has good ride, handles well; easy to park; carries most needs of a pickup. Recommend the Extended cab if you can find one.
I had a 03 Sonoma with a 2.2 and a manual that was a extended cab and yeah it was the perfect daily driver minitruck and I miss it everyday I also learned how to drive manual in it
Man my dad had a '98 gmc sonoma 5 spd 2.2. It was a great truck. It had over 240K miles when he sold it. Granted the exhaust sounded completely different and the interior was redesigned, but this is still really cool to watch :)
i drove an automatic today for the first time in idk...5 months?? and i accidently left foot braked bc i thought i had to push in the clutch when i was coming to a stop. nice video, like always
Every time i hear the engine from them trucks it always reminds me of my grandpas 5 speed chevy s10 growing up. Now ive got a 5 speed 99 dodge dakota the sounds the exact same. And i absolutely love it. I just finally learned how to drive manual for the first time at 23 years of age. Always drove automatic my life. But now i honestly prefer manual over automatic. Ive drove 4 wheelers and dirt bikes with manual shifting but any car or truck was always automatic.
@gentle285: you cannot shift into 5th gear anytime you want. If your speed isn't high enough, your top gear will drop the rpm of the engine below its power range and it will die out. You have to go through all the gears until your speed is high enough so that your top gear (5th or 6th on most cars) won't drop the rpm too much and then mentain your speed and that gear to achieve the best fuel economy. From my experience 60-70 mph and 6th gear will give you the best economy.
Here in South America we had that generation until 2012 with facelift, it was offered with a 2.4 141hp gasoline engine, the 2.2 with 110 a 2.5 Turbodiesel with 95hp only from 95' to 98' and since 98' to 2012 a indestructible 2.8 Turbodiesel MWM with 132hp or 140hp and 340nm since 2006.
Pretty nice shiftings now, nice job :) Just a quick note: you could shift to 5th gear anytime you want. Actually, it is recommended to always use the highest gear to achieve better fuel economy. Great video.

Nice vid man, you're are like a pro at driving a manual now! I always love watching your vids, especially the one where you feature a manual car and test drive it. Keep up the good work.
Two things I learned from my dad when I learned how to drive a standard are, people who can't really drive standards or who haven't learned right put it in neutral or press the clutch in and coast to a stop rather than downshifting, and to put it neutral and let the clutch out when you come to a red light or somewhere where you have to stop longer than a couple of seconds and to never sit there with the clutch pushed in
I can downshift I just don't cause rn my truck is open manifold and shoots fire across my fucked up brake line lol so yeah anytime my foot isn't on the throttle then it's either in neutral or I have the clutch to the floor (I can drive stick just not well lol I'm still learning)
I have forgotten how that start sounds, I needed to change the starter and the new one is adapted from another truck is not the same :c, this made me get beautiful memories.
I used to have a 1992 s10 ext. cab, stick shift pretty sure a 6 cylinder was my favorite truck, then I had a 2000 s10 stick shift.. now I have a 1997 automatic I love s10 trucks look good for how cheap and easy to fix
I m actually looking into getting one of these as my first truck, 4 cylinder or V6, with a 5 speed stick. This video really helps out. Thanks saabkyle04 for posting this, even though I realize it was posted almost 2 years ago.

Two things I remeber (apar there was a review on Popular Mechanics)... The bundled cassette with tips. Also, shift pattern is not straight, remembersme some VW. Anyone remembers?
It's possible, but it takes a lot of time and a lot of money. In your case I wouldn't suggest doing a conversion, only because of how common your truck is and its actual worth. What I mean by this is, it would probably be cheaper, and definitely way more easier to go out and buy another single cab 2.2L S10 with a manual transmission than it would be to convert your current truck.
No, I'm 22 with a class A cdl, he's pushing the clutch to the floor which activated the clutch brake, 2-4 inches is all you need, you only need to disengage the clutch enough to pull the flywheel away so it shifts smooth
Ludzidocelowych ( www.ehow.com/about_5697204_clutch-brake_.html and www.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_clutch_brake_on_manual_heavy_duty_truck_transmissions ) I think clutch brakes are only for non-synced transmissions like in the heavy trucks that you drive.
Nothing that can be driven with a Class C liscence has a clutch brake. This truck has synchronizers on every gear, including reverse unlike a 13 speed semi, eliminating the need for a clutch brake. So, to save the synchros to push the pedal down far enough to completely disengage the clutch. There's alot he's doing wrong, but putting the clutch on the floor isn't one of em
Ludzidocelowych clutch brake on an auto? Someone has shit for brains, class C autos with autos use a serise of wet clutches and a hydraulic coupling called a torque converter. This is not an eaton fuller heavy truck 18spd auto. The eaton fuller 18spd autos are un-synchronized manuals with some computer contols that float the gears for you
If the car is on, and you are in park, then you aren't in gear, yet you shake the manual checking if it's in gear, you do that BEFORE you start the car, you can actually launch the car into buildings and cars and SHET like that if you don't check before hand.
Wow! It’s pretty rare to find a mid 90s GM vehicle with working AC. My dad had a 94 S-10 extended cab, and I think he must’ve had it in the shop at least five times for the AC. He eventually gave up on it because the warranty ran out. I don’t think it was until 98 or nine when GM finally had a lot of those issues resolved.
I have the 4.3 1997 ZR2 (3 inch lift factory, power windows, locks, automatic). Drives great. I test drove a older (91 body style) 2.8 VERY SLOW compared to the 4.3
@talldude123 GEO was GM's import re-badge brand. AKA Toyota, Suzuki, isuzu. so only the prism(corolla) had 2 airbags Also, since that truck was designed in or around 91 thats why only the 1 airbag (only 1 year after it was required to have 1 airbag in all cars(1995ish) . It got 2 when it was redesigned. BTW it wasn't that long ago when there were only those motorized shoulder belts. GM actually had the first airbags in the 70's years ahead of its time. while taking 8 yrs to redesign a car
I've noticed that most 5 speed S10s I've ever seen don't have a tach. And every automatic S10 I have seen does. I have a 94 S10 5 speed with no tach. It doenst matter though. If you can really drive a standard you don't need a tach. However, if you feel you need one. At least 94 models and up that I know of, have a light on the cluster that tells you when to shift up.
yea i have the tbi as well. ive revved it out a couple times and it just takes off pretty well. i dont all the time though cause gas. too much nowadays. cant wait till the winter snow, do some drifting. mines got about 81,xxx miles on it too
The manual transmission for sure, as long as you're not driving like you're on a drag strip, you'll get better gas mileage than the same truck with an automatic. It's not a HUGE difference, but there still is a small savings overall in the long run.
Lol I had one with a stick and 4.10 gears and she was peppy to about 60mph then fell on its face and am thinking of trading my sn95 convertible for another one
I find it to be bullcrap when car manufacturers don't put a tachometer on manual transmission vehicles. Kinda hard to know when to shift if you don't have a tacho
So im buying a chevy s10 "97 .. im excited about it. However i dont know how to drive Manual. So im watching this video and it doesnt appear to be difficult. I noticed wen ur shifting gears ur foot is still on the gas pedal. now do i release the gas pedal slightly or fully when shifting?
Agreed, no problems with coasting to a stop. I can downshift fine, but any usage of the clutch is additional wear on it. Using the brakes with the transmission in neutral coming to a stop puts extra wear on the brakes sure, but brakes are cheaper than a new clutch.
Every time you push that clutch in, you are wearing the pressure plate and throw out bearing to disengage the clutch, nevermind the nominal "wear" you think you would save on the clutch disc itself.
I think the reason people think he is doing bad with the gear is cause his foot is on the clutch even though in could not be pressing it, think people before you say something
@XClone08 It's best to try manual out for yourself rather than a video. Driving manual is just one of those things you need to get the feel for (balancing clutch and gas, when to shift and things like clutch feel in high torque motors). I drove a bit in my Uncle's Honda Accord and I made the car jerk and move like it never did before lol.
@MrLagunaChris a lot of it has to do with the engine design. most engines ur referring to with low hp/liter are push rod(OHV) engines. These don't get a lot of hp for their displacement but they're generally smaller and lighter than a similar displacement DOHC engine. Obviously these are generalizations, and you'll most likely find exceptions to this but that's a big part of the reason why.
@codrinseth15 my mom's 2003 yaris (1L engine) can go 20 MPH in 5th gear... And my instructer's Honda jazz/fit could do it. The engine will only stall if you stop without using the clutch, or if you start in a high gear (1st and 2nd works the best). My mom's car will wobble and struggle if you put it in 5th at about 10 MPH (I've tried it) but above that, it won't stall whatever gear you're in.
I got a 2.2 automatic. It's a good truck, little beat up, but it was used out on a pasture. Except for that runs great, some little work needs to be done. But overall great truck.
hey do a test drive of a 1987 chevrolet caprice classic with a 305 v8 loaded power windows locks and mirror power seats power lumbar tape player mint shape no rust or damage runs drives like a new car and only 274,218 miles on it

5:08. Anyone else find the sound of that upshift as satisfying as I did?

I've noticed that most 5 speed S10s I've ever seen don't have a tach. And every automatic S10 I have seen does. I have a 94 S10 5 speed with no tach. It doenst matter though. If you can really drive a standard you don't need a tach. However, if you feel you need one. At least 94 models and up that I know of, have a light on the cluster that tells you when to shift up.
i own a 1998 Chevy s10 LS 5 speed its my first car and i love it. i think you should do a video on a 1998 Chevy s10 LS 5 speed.
yea i have the tbi as well. ive revved it out a couple times and it just takes off pretty well. i dont all the time though cause gas. too much nowadays. cant wait till the winter snow, do some drifting. mines got about 81,xxx miles on it too
I like this camera angel because I can see how you shift and your feet
The manual transmission for sure, as long as you're not driving like you're on a drag strip, you'll get better gas mileage than the same truck with an automatic. It's not a HUGE difference, but there still is a small savings overall in the long run.
Lol I had one with a stick and 4.10 gears and she was peppy to about 60mph then fell on its face and am thinking of trading my sn95 convertible for another one
I find it to be bullcrap when car manufacturers don't put a tachometer on manual transmission vehicles. Kinda hard to know when to shift if you don't have a tacho
I agree, although the S10 does have a "shift up" light that comes on.
yeah and its really fucking annoying when youre cruising at about 60 km/h in 4th and it keeps coming on saying shift.
I think it's stupid how automatics have them. My honda fit is a CVT and I see no point in having the tach
Listen to the engine
Do it by the sound
Hello what exhaust system is that. It sounds great
So im buying a chevy s10 "97 .. im excited about it. However i dont know how to drive Manual. So im watching this video and it doesnt appear to be difficult. I noticed wen ur shifting gears ur foot is still on the gas pedal. now do i release the gas pedal slightly or fully when shifting?
If you want quick acceleration get the HO4.3.
If the clutch is pushed in, no gears are engaged, so coasting to a stop is just fine.
Agreed, no problems with coasting to a stop. I can downshift fine, but any usage of the clutch is additional wear on it. Using the brakes with the transmission in neutral coming to a stop puts extra wear on the brakes sure, but brakes are cheaper than a new clutch.
Every time you push that clutch in, you are wearing the pressure plate and throw out bearing to disengage the clutch, nevermind the nominal "wear" you think you would save on the clutch disc itself.
s10's are badass cars even the dodge charger
TheManchesterGuy/TMG Official s10s are trucks silly goose
Dodge Charger is a car, but I have to agree the 1970 Dodge Charger r/t is a very masculine type car.
I think the reason people think he is doing bad with the gear is cause his foot is on the clutch even though in could not be pressing it, think people before you say something
Smooth shifts, a little judder at the beginning lol, but nice other than that.
Oh yeah, and do you like driving manuals?
i am a though and though Ford guy buy i love the look of this truck . Damn where i come from thats rare to find in that kinda shape
My favorite white pickup truck
do you know of what exhaust system was on that truck
@codrinseth15 my mom's 2003 yaris (1L engine) can go 20 MPH in 5th gear... And my instructer's Honda jazz/fit could do it. The engine will only stall if you stop without using the clutch, or if you start in a high gear (1st and 2nd works the best). My mom's car will wobble and struggle if you put it in 5th at about 10 MPH (I've tried it) but above that, it won't stall whatever gear you're in.
you drive very well
Oh this S10 has a custom build in manual shifter I see pretty cool with a build in clutch peddle
454 SS The truck is from the factory as a manual, it just has a custom handle on the top of the shifter.
Brayden Hooper The shifter knob doesn’t come off, they had to change the whole shifter itself.
I got a 2.2 automatic. It's a good truck, little beat up, but it was used out on a pasture. Except for that runs great, some little work needs to be done. But overall great truck.
hey do a test drive of a 1987 chevrolet caprice classic with a 305 v8 loaded power windows locks and mirror power seats power lumbar tape player mint shape no rust or damage runs drives like a new car and only 274,218 miles on it
please please please do a tour of that gold durango!
***** I really want to know how you installed that shift knob! If you could please tell me I want to know where that middle chrome piece came from because I have the BOM shift knob, but the piece that you have on it didn't come with it. Please comment back helping a lot!
I think it was already three when he got it

Driving down the road it sounds like my buddy’s Jeep Comanche with a Thrush Turbo
