I feel like there would be a lot more S10 trucks driving around today if they came with diesels.
S10 will always be around.
Mail trucks in the USA are based mostly on s10
Americans for the most part don’t even want fuel efficient trucks.
We had the rabbit pickup truck which got 45-50mpg in the early 1980s.
And America said no thanks?!?
@Mgtow Farmer nope its only a government thing because in europe we have very efficient cars, there is no 5 to 6 to 8l gas guzzler engines, even the biggest mercedes van has a 3l v6 turbo diesel.
my 83 s10 blazer would still be on the road if the body hadn't been made out of whatever scrap metal they could get their hands on at the time.
I still have it, put a 4.3 with a quadrajet in place of the 2.8 boat anchor, but sadly it sits in back because of the poor state of the body.
@@carholic-sz3qv vehicles in the US don't get that kind of mileage either unless it's a classic, and even then it's got to be modded for power or not running right.
Little 4cyl without turbo whistle just sounds like my John Deere utility tractor haha
Pretty sure the original gas engine was a better engine, but cool swap.
@@trevorwhaley3780 Yah its definitely unique that's for sure
@@trevorwhaley3780 the money youd save on swapping a 5.3/4.8/6.0 instead would outweigh the cost of fuel
@@trevorwhaley3780 no
@@trevorwhaley3780 better from which prespective? Power, mpg, reliability, simplicity?
I was like "Dang, this guy looks familiar." Then I saw the blue ram in the garage, and it made sense
Who is he?
Thought the same but still cant find him lol
@@karjack11 DeBoss Garage did their previous episode with this guy's Cummins Ram and how to fix the "Death Wobble" by installing a rack and pinion steering box in it.
Karsten Jackson death wobble truck 👍🏻
This guy is rad. Hope he pops up on the channel again, down the road.
Ok... who else could hear the family spaceship from The Jetsons when the truck went by at higher rpm’s
Lol that's what I came to post!
Holy shit! Hahahahaha!
That's what I thought too lol
It sounds really close to the gas 2.2 lol go figure that its the same displacement and same company that made it lol. I wonder about the firing order...
That’s funny 😂
I have that same 2.2 swap into my 89 Isuzu pickup. And the alternator has a vacuum pump that runs the power brakes. Was a basic bolt in and now I'm running it on refined crude oil. And out here in Belize I can still almost all the parts.
all fuels are just refined crude oil m8, from propane to jet fuel. except for biodiesel and natural gas I suppose
@@stopchangingmynameyoutube That's what everybody calls it here in Belize. So it's half price of desiel and it's all black, thin, more gas in it.
@@floydpenner6909 sounds like bunker fuel.
Love the swap, I have a similar swap I did around 15 years ago. A 1988 Mazda B2200 cab plus with a 1981 Nissan sd22 diesel engine from a Datsun pickup. It wasn't a hard swap, Staying Japanese alot of things hooked up. I used the factory engine mounts, and alot of the wiring and spedo cable fit. 30 mpg and slow no matter how you drive it, lol
These engines could "smell" a hill, but got 35-40 mpg and would last up to and past 300,000 miles.
I just submitted my project with similar stats... except 5-7 MPG🤣.. IH 444E
I got the gas 2.2 95 chevy s10. I got 278,000 miles. What killed alot of these engines is thermostat. Cheap quality. I took mine out 10 years ago. Never looked back. Changed chain at 220,00.
flir67man that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. I know all kinds of them with lots of miles on them and thermostat still in. You have no idea what you are talking about
And could go about 58mph on the highway with a tailwind lol.
Its basically a duramax S10 before duramax was a thing.
6.5L V8 with turbo power on its valve cover existed as the suramax precursor
@@CRAPO2011 The Duramax was initially a project between GM and Isuzu.
@@der_pinguin44 still kinda is.
@@jdrok5026 The 6.6.
The 2.8 isn't.
The Duramax is in the Colorado 2.8L
This is just one likeable dude.....!!!
I did a similar swap years ago with a Toyota pickup using a kubota 3 cylinder diesel from a L series tractor. Like Isuzu, Toyota transmissions could swap bell housings. Top speed 71mph, 50-55 mpg. Absolute blast to drive. You have a great truck project!
I’m trying to do a swap right now but hesitant because of stock power ratings did you use the d1105 and was it 4wd?
@@dawsenjewell585 I used a D1301A. The truck is 2wd. It’s rated at 30hp
Wow ok that’s good news did you end up turbocharging it ? What I’m trying to do is build a completely costume truck. Dana 60 axles with 5.29 gears, four link suspension, aluminum flat bed and a fully custom cab that resembles an old power wagon mixed with a Willy’s pickup and a little Suzuki samurai while being a hair smaller than the Samurai I’m planning on using the Suzuki samurai transfer case because in two high it has a gear reduction of 1.4 to 1 and for the transmission I’m considering a Samurai or nv4500 or possibly a tko 500 because of the .63 overdrive and the truck wouldn’t weight more than 2300 pounds any info or pics of your truck
@Steve Moore
Got any videos of it or pictures?
Used to work at Cummins JEP. Best job I ever had. Worked right at the beginning of the line putting cranks and main bearings back when the ISX and ISM were built on the same assembly line.
What happened dude why you leave?
Awesome build! Love S10 no blind spots in that truck. When I was in high school I put a SBC 350 with a double pumper 650 cfm, 30 over high lift cam it is the edelbrock 350 kit on page 2 back in the day with heads, crank, pistons everything it was fun with a summit race 6 speed Richmond tranny, 9” Ford with 4 link it was fun. It was also stupid for a high schooler to put all there money in too. 3 jobs to pay for everything and sold it for a huge lose to pay for some of my collage but helped make me who I am. 1986 S10 no idea where it is today. That was close to 20 years ago.... omg am I a boomer now also build before LS swap the world it was still Small Block Chevy swap the world back then
Awesome. I love seeing a young fella that's willing to actually get in there and figure out solutions and do some wrenching.
There are more of us than you'd think, just don't have the time anymore.
im 15 and building my 96 12 valve right now its a cab and a half dually with 300k miles on it and i cant wait to get it back o the road, and since its 2wd i am going to do the rack and pinion swap from the previous video that you 2 went over
Brilliant work thanks for the awesome content
My dad had a izuzu hombre and Chevy luv love these small 4 cyl trucks and loved 4 cyl ever since.
People like this are valuable. Willing to try and test what works and share the info. Thanks for the info!
This engine is widely used here in the philippine jeepneys along with the isuzu C190, C221, and C240
Seems like a good guy! I love the swap!
I like S10 pickups. I used to work at GMC truck dealership. Love your video’s and how you put things together.
Love the sound of that truck. It is a real beast.
Current performance wiring sells a harness that allows you to keep the GM parts functional and have a mechanical engine.
Love the pride and blood sweat and tears in these swaps. Ive got an 87 isuzu 4BD1T i want to put in a first gen ZR2 with a SAS. Just waiting for one with a bad 4.3 to come up cheap.
The 4bd1 is a great motor
It's always good to see a very clean S10. Love it, keep her clean man!
It is a shame that no one makes parts and rebuild guides for that little engine, because that is awesome! Wish you could tell us what kind of fuel economy it gets though, that would be really awesome.
Here in Argentina all of the S10 are diesel. First ones came with a 2.5 POS. Later replaced for a very good 2.8 MWM. Today they come with a electronic 2.8 with 200 CV
This truck is the definition of the journey being more satifying than the destination. An ok truck and an ok motor but very interesting solutions to the build.
Very cool! Similar engine specs to to Mazda licensed perkins 2.2l in the 84 ranger I just sold. Truck was a slug until I opened up the airbox , put a bigger diameter exhaust with a straight through muffler and turned the pump up till you get a little haze at full throttle . Really woke it up
them rims look nice. simple and clean. simplistic beauty
That's a great first ride! My first truck was a 1988 GMC S15 Short Box, 2.5L, 5 speed, 2wd and that thing ran forever. My dad at one time owned a Massey Ferguson dealership and that was his parts truck. I put over 300K kilometers (186K miles) on that truck and it was the best vehicle I could have at that point in my life. I'd love to buy a clean, rust free one from the southern USA and put either an LS V8 or a VW TDI in it. Great video as always Rich and Aaron!
you cant the ole iron duke! Very hard to find now a days, my mom bought a 91 s10 brand new with the same setup. That motor had 250k miles on it original clutch too when someone rear ended it, shame cause it hadnt burned a drop of oil yet.
In Brazil they came out of the factory with MWM's 2.8 VE pump mechanic injection first, then common rail ... great engine... 3 valve/cyl... easily tunable to over 250hp...
Me and friend did about the same swap in 2009. 96 s10 and the motor and trans was from a pup. 4 cylinder turbo Sold it on eBay and wish I still had it.
Hey I swapped this same Isuzu diesel into a Suzuki Samurai and lived it. Got the motor from an original 33k mile Isuzu pup that rusted into. I loved that motor
I love my 84s10 diesel same engine. Runs excellent
Nice i have an 1984 GMC 2.2 Diesel as well, having a hard time finding parts.
I love the name "filthy rich" in the send stuff to section
I woulda went with a turbo isuzu application but the determination to get that motor done is what makes it worth it
I had a 2000 s-10 2x4 with the 2.2. 5 speed, short bed. Bought it brand new. Put 473,000miles on that little truck. Took it to the scrap yard in 2016.
Aside from normal wear items, all I ever had to replace was the radiator and clutch once, two starters and a valve cover gasket. I changed my oil every 4,000miles. I commutes to school and took my camper/boat to and from New York State several times a year.
Great video. Love what you guys are doing.
The 2.2 isuzu diesel was the best out there. I had a 81 84 and 85 pup diesel. Engines out lasted the trucks.
These Engines are a true workhorse here in the Philippines! Especially the C190 Ppump 4speed and the C240 Ppump 5speed, still lots of parts available here all genuine ISUZU from Isuzu Ph, Isuzu Japan, and Isuzu Thailand.
Indiana in the shop! So you could find the original spec's from the manufacturer, and have them made. I know of a place on Shadeland Ave, and there's another shop out in Anderson. Both places have reasonable prices on CNC. Talk to my friend's over at DIY Garage. If it were me. I'd break out the feeler gauge, and micrometer. I do all of my own work.
Well that's neat! Working for Cummins too.
Always liked the s-10 platform
Hard to find parts for a isuzu pup, had to scrap mine. Had a 86 pup gas truck
Yup, the 90s with the 4.3 were the best. I had 3 and all of them were still running when they went to the junkyard with over 300 thousand on them. Frame rot did them in up here in the North country.
@@mikehunt8375 I have a 94 chevy 1500 with 440xxx miles on it. Lucky dont get a whole lot of rust in southern VA
I've owned 4 S10s and currently still have 2. They're just the right amount of truck about 90% of the time for most folks.
Mike Hunt i've owned (9) 1st gens & (4) 2nd gens (pick-ups, Blazers, Jimmys in both generations) with a couple of really oddly ordered trucks in the mix. 1st gens were always the nicer looking truck imo, yet the biggest downfall of any S-series truck was in the engine department. If racked up plenty miles on some i've owned, yet their low power output & fuel economy was what killed their marketability in their class. I'd still be driving a 1st gen if i could've found a reasonably priced 4BT.
I have the same engine in my 1989 Korando K9, soon to be swapped for a 3.1 turbodiesel from an Opel Campo (rebadged Isuzu)
Rich, the Isuzu 4bd1 and 6bd1 are some of the best engines they made. They can be found in white 2-65 and 2-75 tractors Hitachi excavators and many Japanese construction equipment built in the 80s and 90s, because they are not popular in North America they should be cheap to find, they go well and you can bolt a turbo on them. They will never do what a b series Cummins will do, but they are honest little slugger's
Great conversion on the S10! Full credit to the owner
Sounds like the old Hyster fork lift at my work place! It has the same motor!
I have an '82 s-10 diesel, was factory done at the time. Slow, but great on fuel !
This is what I'm talking about! I swapped a Mitsubishi 4d55 into my Mazda b2600i, and I support anyone into small engine swaps!
This is just plain awesomeness
I bought my 200 s10 10 years ago for 150 bucks. Drove it for 8 years, head gasket blew. Rebuilt engine, brand new trans from dealer for 500, rebuilt rear axle, new brakes, new suspension. Linexed the entire truck. And work the shit out of it again. 2.2 liter, I've tow strapped one ton trucks acrost town, hauled 2200 pounds of concrete in the bed, I hual my tractor around. It's got alot of work to do to pay me back that 5 grand I spent.
Engine note reminds me of vacationing in Latin America as the isuzu diesels are all over the place. I think 20 years later he will still have this pickup very cool. I bet no one knows but there was a 2019 chevy equinox diesel.
Amazing engine. I have the same one in my passport, and I turbocharged it and intercooled it as well. It gets amazing mpgs and it’s super reliable
What kind of mpgs we talking?
EZchairchillen 35-40
@@gamer78full damn that's pretty good! Is it still super slow after the work you put in?
EZchairchillen it’s not fast but I can reach 60mph. I’m pretty sure that in a small truck like an s10 it would be super fast. There are some things to consider: it’s in a heavy 4 door suv with off road equipment and big tires, and i live at 8k feet.
@@gamer78full ok thanks for the info! I like hearing about different Diesel swaps 😁
Very cool swap
oil in the clutch cable LOL.
use a "dry graphite lube" spray can and "cable injector", it wont dry as fast inside the cable, but it also wont gum it up in freezing cold. in the past I've used that on many cables, but mostly speedometer cables. it often beats replacing the whole cable pair and I often sprayed it backwards from under vehicle inwards! (wrap rags/towels around the inside so it doesn't blow all over)
My first vehicle was almost an old, pretty well used Isuzu Pup with the 233. My folks (we had a used car dealership) and I were often at odds about what vehicle I wanted. Several older Chevys with semi hot built engines which never happened. My mom trying to keep me out of trouble. Probably wise. Always a diesel nut, I gravitated to this Pup. That idea got the ax for my safety sake too. Definitely not for being a hot rod but for being dangerously slow and merging into a busy highway was like russian roulette in the Pup. Cool truck but dangerously underpowered! Much like a Mercedes
240D with an auto. Manual trans wasn't as bad of a sentence to be charged with. I miss my W123 300D.
i was thinking a YD25 would fit pretty nice in an S10, little 4 cylinder that makes 160hp and 300lbft, plus the turbo noise you get from them is insane
I bought a 87 gcm s15 4x4 back in 2011 it had a 2.2l isuzu diesel the previous guy swaped it in she was a little under powered but 1000km-1100 per tank was nice. it needed a a rebuild as it was drinking alot of oil. after some research i decided it wasnt worth rebuilding. i loved having a diesel engine in it, so i threw a 1.9l tdi with bigger intercooler turbo injectors etc now its making 160 hp and about 350 foot pounds of torque alot more than those 62 ponies and 93 ft lb torqure that isuzu could put out haha.
Sweet video deboss
This is basically the same engine thats in our older diesel tugs at the airport I work at, id recognize that sound anywhere.
Really huge difference between automotive and industrial engine is belt drive and gear drive cams , the thermoking engine was probably the best and is probably the one that is in your toter , very tough engines .
Neat little truck. It's got character.
Well Deboss, I found a F250 96 Cab., not a wreck but bought for running gear and frame for a 46 ford cab. He has mounted the old cab on the frame and he bought what ever it took and it runs good. 7.3 diesel and so this cab is clean but striped of wiring from dash and under hood, says its clean and for sale, D
Here in Brazil we have a lot of S10/Blazer and Ranger diesel... from factory... but here, it's 2.8, 3.0 and 3.2 turbo diesel...
My brother Holden Rodeo ute with this engine in it, it starts and sounds the same as in the video.
Use to dream about doin this swap in my s10s
I'd like to see someone do a swap with an engine out of an Isuzu NPR box truck. I see them on the road all the time, and they kept making them with mechanical injection well into the 2000s. Some of those engines were even available with a GM truck pattern bell housing, which would make getting a transmission for it very simple.
Dude I drive a fllatbed with that setup at work. We are borrowing it and it needs work, but it rolls out pretty damn well. The good spots in the transmission are absolutely butter smooth. I was really impressed. Was also my first time driving a cab over. I really like them now. I just liked looking at 60s dodge cabovers before. Now I really want one.
I've been contemplating this swap for a minute. I drive one every day, and just got a brand new one, so the old one is ready to retire. Find one with the 6 speed manual it came with, and it might be a super neat swap
Cool truck!
Bravo young man
Well dang Rich. You could've come to Louisville, Ky and peeped my 1983 Mazda b2200 diesel with the factory perkins
Funny how the lathe changed the world, and how a machine shop is still essential today 🔎 niche
I used to have car with this engine, good mileage but underpower as hell
good for this guy. something different and cool.
BADASS RIDE
I knew I'd seen that blue 2nd gen b4. I also live in Columbus Indiana
5 cylinder TDi, BMW M47 or an OM605 would be sweet in there.
Dave's Workshop, or a merc I5 from an 82-83 240d/300d w123.
OM605 I think would fit better in a 1/2 ton, would love on in my 81' F100
There’s a first gen s10 with a Mercedes om605 in one of the s10 groups I’m in it was for sale a while back
Can speak from experience that an I5 is a tough shoehorn in these kinds of trucks.
Neat lil chevy
Love it!
Honestly I thought of a diesel swapped s10 just yesterday ( Sunday, January 12, 2020) but with a ALH TDI engine
I know a guy who did ALH in his ranger with compounds
When it’s on the freeway it sounds like the flying cars from the Jetsons cartoon
That thing is awesome
I've had 2 2.2 gas powered S10s and I wouldn't exactly call them quick... I can only imagine the experience of driving one with 50% of the power. Must be about like an Olds 350 Diesel car.
i sold my 73 gmc / cummins last year and now have an 87 nissan diesel 5speed 2 wheel drive ,heard they are pretty rare .
i was like dam rich is in indiana. wish i would have known would have invited him to my engine machicne shop..
I'd like to see if a VW TDI would work in a swap like this. Lots of options for some extra grunt as well.
There is no reason why it shouldn't fit
If they put the legendary 1.9 ALH in jeeps and samurais there isn’t any reason you couldn’t drop one in a S-10. I think they make adapters for T-5 Transmission’s and chevy Transmission’s as well. It’s on some Jeep swap site.
A TDI might be cool to swap in, amazing mpg wherever it is in, and those new engines are so quiet and civilized for diesels.
My best friend did this works pretty well and it tows pretty good as well pulled a 18ft trailer with a 98 tahoe on it pulled it 300 miles up and down a mountain no the vw diesel wasn't stock it made about 200hp and 450tq it was mean empty till about 90mph gets 38mpg
I was thinking ALH TDI also.
8:50 I have that same overflow tank on my swap!
I'm from Indiana and soon as I saw the drive by intro I was saying in my head jeez that looks like Indiana.
I'm in love!
Back after I graduated high school I built a Datsun 620 that had this engine in it
This is in Clifford Indiana!!!!!! THATS WHERE I LIVE!!!!!
I have a 1980 chevy luv that was Gas and put the c223 engine in it. Then found a 1987 trooper that had the Diesel engine and took the turbo off it and put it on my na c223. Can say what a difference with that and extra fuel added to it. But it needs body help bad. Still runs great tho! It’s also 4x4!
Oh wow you're in Indiana... SAME HERE. Columbia City.
Cool Build
VW Diesel could also work, also better aftermarket I would think.
Really cool little truck! Not sure about America, but if you can find a 4JA1 (2.5 N/A) or 4JB1T (2.8 TDI) you’d be good to go if you ever want to swop.. there’s a ‘97 Isuzu KB250 in SA with over 1 million KM on it, still working every day;-)
Have spent some time in a s10 turbo diesel in Brazil, 2000ish.
Might have to get the Pistons knurled then use bugger/file fit rings.
Back in the 90's my dad gave me his Isuzu I-mark diesel. I loved it as a gift but it had about 40 HP and could not make interstate speed with a headwind. Blew a couple of timing belts and because it was an interference engine the rocker arm shaft was destroyed twice. So...on the second repair I gave the car away.
GM also used the same engine in some it's dinky crap cars...Cavalier I think.
you can get parts for that in central america, you could also get toyota engines like the 1hz or the d4d
Nice truck!.There was a 1st gen s10s that came with a Diesel engine but was discontinued like 2 years after introducing the s10 truck I believe. I’m thinking about a n54, Australian Barra turbo, sr20,rb26 swap in my next s10. I already have a sbc s10 I built (on my channel) but I want a swapped pickup not a blazer
I wish I knew you guys were in Columbus, I could have taken you through the Cummins Tech Center
I think it's cool & Different, S10s & Blazers are all I build on my Channel, I'm getting ready to do a 350 Swap on my 95 S10 & I just got done Rebuilding a 1984 S10 Blazer ( That I'm now trying to sell ), I love these little Trucks and Blazers
Great video put a turbo on it!🙂
