I played through D1 and D2 for the first time a couple months ago and I was really impressed with how much the atmosphere of the game owes to the music. Playing a game like Diablo it could be very easy to just mute the music, but for my first playthroughs I found myself listening to every scrap of music from game that I could. It remained constantly compelling.

Boards and rooftiles and broken dulcimer strings flowing in a syncopated maelstrom, indicating that you've left the pocket of safety that is the Town and are cast out into the disarray that the daemonic influence is causing.

I replayed Diablo a little while ago, and that music immediately took me back to the chunky CRT all-beige PC days of my childhood. I 100% understand your preference for the first two.
I absolutely adore Matt Uelmen's music. He just knows how to evoke the feeling of desolation, tension, unease... but also relief, blessing, respite. Diablo 2 soundtrack is such a unique vibe, and while Lord of Destruction soundtrack goes more orchestral, there is still that same vibe to it, that carries on in the unused tracks from the first attempt at Diablo 3 that were then folded into World of Warcraft Burning Crusade - and Torchlight, heh, carries the torch, giving even more of that sound in a more light-hearted world. But another thing is, this music is perfect for the gameplay of these games. It is constant, opressive, everpresent with zero chill because... the games are like that too during combat, and they need to keep the tension while the player surveys the area for loot. It's part of what makes Diablo 2 so deeply addicting, the music drives you forward, it wants you to keep smashing the demons. The drums throughout the tracks are like the war drums in an army, pushing the tempo of battle, keeping you locked in and engaged.
Always loved old Blizzard. Still play Diablo 1 and StarCraft with my dad now and again. I would recommend looking at SC1 for a music content video, lots of material there. Total Annihilation has a pretty great orchestral soundtrack but there is probably a lot less surrounding material on it. Happy birthday! Thanks for the great video!

Excellent video as always, and Happy Birthday! Honestly, I don't think any other game franchise does the same thing these games do with the drums, I specially like the idea that the drums represent the demons so it's always odd but fitting when they kick in in tracks that you wouldn't expect. Also the electric guitar being very sparingly used is nice, really makes it stand out when it kicks in. Unfortunately this is not as present in Diablo IV, which is a shame, but it's still a good soundtrack. I really like the use of female choruses in that one.
Perfect timing. Just started a new D1 playthrough this morning. Have always loved this and the soundtrack. Few songs but always really good, especially considering it's played for hours on end. Has been in my music rotation since release day.

Courtesy of this video, it really only just now hit me that Diablo 1's soundtrack is only 6 songs long, and you'll really only ever hear 5 of them in-game; it feels like the textbook definition of quality over quantity, and I think Uelman definitely leans into that mindset, because every single track is full of texture, color, and gravitas. So far, you've covered a lot of the games from my youth (Diablo, Half-Life, Deus Ex, Fallout), which really brings back the good memories. I've been a huge fan of Diablo 1 and 2 and the music is one of the main reasons for that. Thank you for explaining why the music is so special. I tried to follow your advice and buy the Diablo 1 and 2 soundtrack on Vinyl but unfortunately the Diablo 1 soundtrack is extremely expensive and rare.

I will admit, I am a little sad you never addressed the biggest banger on the Diablo 2 soundtrack, the Harem theme. But I really appreciate this dissection of the soundtrack for people who aren't good at the whole music stuff.

I failed a grade because of Diablo 2, when i got to Lut Gholein i stood there and did nothing just listen to the music and it made the hair on my arm stand up. I did looked for music like diablo later on, and never found it. Diablo 3 music was so bad i had it turned off in my first gameplay.

Replayed Diablo 1 about a month ago. The soundtrack makes the game what it is. Its oppressively dark atmosphere is missing from the other games.
Diablo 2 has my favorite soundtrack of all time. I love "harem" the most off of it.
