    So I have a fun story about Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. I first encountered it during Anime club in my high school, specifically thanks to the teacher who was sponsoring the club. See, they're an old school weeb who used to actually import anime and help apply translations n' stuff to it as a hobby, and when they actually saw Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, they fell in love and bought their own copy of it. When they became a teacher and started hosting an anime club at the highschool, they wanted to share this love with everyone else, so every Halloween week (or whatever week is closest to Halloween) they would opt to host a pizza party where they'd buy walk-in special pizzas from a nearby local pizza place and share Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust with the club.
    It was awesome, and that's how I watched the movie no less than 4 times in high school and still love it today.

      back during covid my brother and I lived together in a little terrace house in melbourne, and because there was nothing to do we would just watch movies every single night. We watched Metropolis during that time and it was a super memorable experience. That movie is just BIG. Reminded me a bit of some of the large scale stuff in Akira. Underrated movie I think

    Cool to see your commentary on this. Vampire Hunter D was pretty much my introduction to japanese anime, rented it on VHS. There is actually two separate english dubs, one in 1992 and the new 2015 one. The older dub has some better voice acting talent imo, but it also has a rougher translation script. If you give it another watch some day, I'd recommend giving it a try with the 1992 streamline dub.

    Funny you mentioning Romeo and Juliet at the ending of Bloodlust. In the manga there is no Camilla and D spares the Vampire (Meyer something) after comming to the same realisation than in the movie. But since the facility was already destroyed, there is no way for them to leave earth. In a plottwist, the weakened Meyerling gets sniped by the bow user (that is possessed by one of those face demons that D also has in his hand) of the Marcus Family and dies.
    After the fight it turnes out Charlott killed herself after Meyerling died by impaling herself on his claws. Quit reminiscent of how Romeo and Juliet also both end up dead by the end of the play.
    Seems they wanted a "good" ending for the movie and not end on such a downer like the manga did.

      yo thank you for sharing, it was very interesting to read and i did not know that. Makes the Romeo and Juliet parallel feel a lot stronger. I feel like cursed lovers is a bit of a broader theme than R&J, even though that is the quintessential version of it. But cursed lovers who BOTH DIE at the end? Now that is Shakespearean af

      @@SimonZinzovski HOLY GODDAMN... I cannot even begin to express how much better Bloodlust is. Actual tears in my eyes, "I am going to rewatch this again and soon" energy (which is saying something, I've only even seen Alien maybe 3 times and that's my favorite of all time). I did feel a part of my soul die a little when you said the english release WAS the primary release, because... ough the voice acting is a little rough at times, but WOW what a gorgeous movie and what an incredible plot. I've never cosplayed before, but I already have Leila's haircut and a half-complete cyberpunk-y getup so... who knows.
      Also definitely grabbed a couple samples of Mire for my goth-industrial project, love that his VA gave just a tiny little bit of Andrew Eldritch to the performance.

      Also yeah, the movie shot up from "Oh this is really good" to "I'M MAKING ALL MY FRIENDS WATCH THIS" specifically once they get to Carmilla's castle. And the whole just... JUST the castle bit could've been it's own movie and still would've been incredible, real insane quality of writing and animation working together.

    Loved the original film after initially seeing it on cable as a teenager. Got it on DVD after that. The worst (practically unintelligible) dub in the film is the giant mutant who yells out, “Going somewhere?” I bought the PS1 game to try out on my PS2 and ended up reselling it a short time later. It’s truly unplayable, due to its extremely poor controls.

    12:33 I think the City of Night and Darkness is actually the space station from the opening sequence, in which case... let's hope vampires don't need to breathe because that think did not look like it was still sealed. Alternatively, they might've meant another station, presumably in sun-synchronous orbit on the far side of Earth.

    • @gearandalthefirst7027
      @gearandalthefirst7027 2 місяці тому

      Also I'd say that D's character arc is more about learning to forgive his mother for his existence and to not indiscriminately rage-kill every single other vampire he comes across. But ig we don't get the chance to see if he actually learned that or if it is just a return to the status-quo so it could be either.

    Thanks for interesting and well-crafted videos! It's been a while since I saw the first Vampire Hunter D -movie, but I think the blatant sexism was descriptive and not normative, meaning that the fictional world happened to be a cruel and somber place for women that is not justified. But my interpretation might be too benevolent because as we all know, if we look at the subject in the domain of making the movie, studio-execs usually need to cram fan service in any means necessary to some particular genres of anime and there isn't any thought or idea behind that.

    • @SimonZinzovski
      @SimonZinzovski  3 місяці тому

      I like that reading of it! I think it is always interesting to delineate between the ideologies of the fictional world, and the ideologies of the fictional piece itself. It makes me think of how in Tropic Thunder RDJ plays a method actor doing blackface. Which was obviously controversial, because he is literally DOING blackface. But within the narrative of the film they address, critique and lampoon RDJ's character for doing blackface. So they got backlash for doing blackface, but they were doing it to clown on blackface as a stupid and racist thing to do.
      Anyway, I think there is certainly an element to Doris's characterisation as a woman disempowered by a cruel world that makes sense. But at the same time, we are literally shown her panties and breasts regularly in a pretty lecherous way. If she's meant to be the daughter of a werewolf hunter, and a hunter herself as shown at the start of the movie, why is she so feeble and useless throughout the film?
      BUT ALSO, the movie doesn't actually give a lot of time to Doris, because it doesn't have a lot of time to do much of anything at all. So like, maybe I'm projecting my political opinions onto a very thin character as a way to fill in the blanks? Perhaps all that is needed is a more robust characterisation?
      I don't know! It's interesting to think and talk about though hey

      Seemed pretty obvious that Doris was resigned to the fact that she lived in a society where most men didn’t respect her boundaries and treated her as property. You make it sound like she was offering herself to D in an attempt to manipulate him. She just assumed that he had the same motivations as the men she’d been harmed by in the past.
