You painted that frame right on the wall, you stepped on the canvas while you were glueing on the swatches, you straight up threw it all together including sawing on your living room floor. The perfectionist in me is so freed right now.
😍I got places to be and shit to do 🙃
Girl! This is the comment of the year. I love it.
"Not PMSing right now, just Straight up "M"ing!" I am also pretty nasty to people when I'm "M"ing!!! SOOOO RELATABLE, and quite funny!! Made my morning very happy hearing this! THANK YOU!!
White sweatpants during your period is a supreme power move 👸🏻
Just a tip from someone who made endless canvases in art school: your canvas support is not supposed to also serve as a picture frame. You place the fabric over the wood support and wrap it around covering the wood, tighten and staple on the back. Then, you can have your finished canvas framed. Especially for a project that size because the fabric *may* sag with time. I loved the result though!! Such a good idea!!
I think it’s fine for this purpose. It’s not the Mona Lisa. 😊
Thank you sharing this tip for anyone else coming along who may want to take their skills to the next level ❤️
@@janicetribbiani7535 Why can’t I think of responses like yours??👏
Awesome tip, ty for sharing 🥰🙌
@@janicetribbiani7535 of course it's fine, but she did struggle a bit with getting it taught and that is the reason why.
haven't used the word stoked in like 7 years but I'm stoked for this.
hahah
That was so funny and I love the result. So many of us don't have the money to buy those beautiful art works. You show us how a girl, alone in her living room and talking to herself can create nice wall art with the ups and downs of the process. Both funny and inspiring !
❤️🥺🥰
Thank you for the reminder about NOT focusing on perfection. It is better to move forward and learn instead of not even trying. Loved this DIY!
Pro tip for stretching canvas - start in the middle, not the corners, and do only 2-3 staples before rotating to the next side as you work out to the corners. :)
Interestingly in school (fine art major in painting, quite long ago) i was taught to start at a corner, staple, go to the opposite corner, wrap and staple, repeat. Then work center of each side etc. Which means maybe more than one way to get the result. Gonna try your method too.
@@courtneycole235 yeah, we started in the middle and worked out at my art school, 10/10 recommend. starting at the corner seems like you'd end up with extra fabric bunching in the middle
@@artxlife7236 mine come out very smooth, but am gonna try the start in middle method. Either way it is kinda a workout of crawling around & strange half-yoga moves!
Also! If you end up with any dips / dents in the surface of a stretched canvas spray the back with a bit of water and it will shrink back to a smooth surface!
Thank you your perfection advice was very inspiring. Lost my Fiancé two weeks ago. Needed it. Mess is a Love language ❤️ been trying to declutter and live a simpler life. Been Fall cleaning and doing projects. I feel redecorating my apartment has helped to distract myself from missing him again. I'm glad I came across your video Thank You❤️🙏🏼
Didn’t think the universe would be speaking to my soul on this Saturday morning, but here we are
I came for interior design inspiration and got life inspiration too. Perfectionism is the greatest inhibitor of progress and joy. Love that.
You are everything I was missing from my daily UA-cam content consumption 😂 Is it wrong to say I like your videos more for your humor and hilarious, yet very insightful comments on life and less for what you are actually doing. I mean I like that too but we like honesty here right? 😂😂😂 You are a gift to the internet 😍😍
Ditto
Amen!!❤️👍👏
You are so refreshing, hilarious, insightful, and approachable. Way more approachable than Hannibal Lector at least.
Her videos are my therapy. Freaking love this girl !!
🥺❤️
100% had the worst day, went straight here.
Oh my! Some beautiful, intelligent, professional, down-to-earth woman who knows her stuff and is sharing useful content. Not to skip she has humor and witty self-reflection.
I've found my new crush!
Seriously don’t ever change, watched this again, and still laughed out loud!
Cheri you’re the best ❤️
Beautiful. Perfection is the enemy of the good. Pareto principle.
Love so many things about your channel - that you seem immune to design trends and have great intuition for what you love. It really is a breath of fresh air!
Its the "Uh im dressed like Hannibak Lecter" for me Caroline never stop making videos please
Ok, im sick again so im binge watching ur videos (and not a crazy stalker person 😂) and how have i just stumbled on these art/ woodworking projects. I love it!!! This girls going to hobby lobby once shes not glued to bed
I love the music in your videos. Im straight up dancing
I have an idea for the taut problem! My dad is painter and always made is own canvases. he'd build the frame first, then place the canvas using a staple gun, and THEN gesso the canvas (your primer, which prevents the paint from corroding the canvas fabric over time). So as the gesso dries it shrinks the fibers of the canvas a tiny bit, pulling it nice and taut on the frame.
Whatever you did ended up looking great though so you're good 👍
The perfectionism convo was exactly what I needed to hear today, especially after having basically that exact same conversation with myself yesterday! Thx for solidifying that bb
I freaking love that you showed the work behind the 'snap'! I cant stand seeing every project be a two second transition and in real life it takes an hour of frustration. My sanity thanks you for this reality check 💖
I enjoy every one of your videos. I discovered them at 4am yesterday and started rearranging my furniture and such before my wife and kids woke up.
Good Morning, Beauty! Love having my coffee ☕ and spending the start of my Saturday morning with you!
I have figured it out --- you need your own HGTV show, hello!!! 🤓
Perfectionism! Ugh, a joy killer. I struggle with it.
I wish my mother loved me like Caroline loves swatches lol
I've been stalling on a big project I've had in mind because of planning/perfectionism, and when you gave that shpeel (shpeal? speal?) about it I felt like 'wow this the perfect time for me to hear this' 😆
Girl your comments are so damn funny. You are a natural public personality.
I think I just realized how lazy I am, because I would have quit at multiple stages during that project. Lol 😂 You did great and it really brings the room together!
making a mess is a self love language 💜 WHhhhhaaaaaat, girl???? YESSS!!!
Omg! I feel you on the “MSing”
ugh! I just wanna reach in and help you!!! you're making everything so much harderr than it actually is - which is honestly, my MO.
I liked the first frame color. Then I saw the white and liked it even more! ☺️👍
Painting the frame white was everything. Now I want to paint all my picture frames white. You genius, girl!
I love your wit and humor. You are great with ideas and creativity. Peace!
I wish I could get to hang out with you in person. You're the coolest woman I have ever found on YT, and that's kind of a lot
You should have a love button. The like button aint enough.🤩
even your ads are fun!!🤩
Love your take on “perfection”!?!
Ahhh yes! When I am doing something, I have energy, but more importantly, I AM PATIENT!
Half way through projects usually, I LOSE patience, and THAT'S when things usually come out like shit, because I just want to get it DONE already!
I don't think I've ever related to anybody so much, ever, in the history of time :)
Like idea of using canvas drop cloth/painted...Stay Creative "On the Fly."
OMG. I have the same staple gun and it took 3 hrs to figure out how to load it!
Bahahaha This is the only validation I needed today ty
West Elm just reported a major swatch shortage across all retail locations!
Another pro tip for making canvas taught is to lightly spray it with water (from a plant sprayer bottle). When the water dries it will shrink the canvas. (Good decision to change the frame colour).
I like so many things in your apartment. This is not one of them. Too DIY for my taste and too much effort for the result. I still love your guts!
I love this video. Thank you! Also, just in case your curious about what a power tool is, it’s a tool that requires electrical power. So a manual nail gun is technically not a power tool. 👍🏼😊
I don’t know what I loved more - the swatch talk about offspring, your pms definitions, or how much you enjoyed saying #FreakingTaut. Really enjoyed watching this original and lovely idea come to life 😊
Just found this channel today and wow , it's a goshdang treasure trove of QUALITY content, thank you.
"self-love language" is a phrase I'm taking to the bank, thank you
I use to have horrible PMS when I was young like you. I would do the same thing just crawl into a hole and just not want to talk to people; I tried everything natural oils etc never worked finally I just learned when to just start tapering off in social activities where I could easily open mouth and insert foot ya know wha I mean
Haha I do definitely know what you mean
@@Caroline_Winkler 🙋🏻♀️🌷💐💐💐
I have a huge empty wall with an old chair in front of it. I wanted something giant and tactile on it like a large rug. I don’t want to (can’t) spend the $300+ on that right now so this gave me an idea. I’ll probably go with a darker background with shades of white & cream samples. I think it will be cute ❤ thanks for the inspo 😊
I want to watch the vlog !!! The trailer is such a tease 😂
The only thing perfect in life is the word PERFECT.
The crazy laughter in the "hannibal lecter" outfit did me in! hahahaha
Great project and the scale and proportion is perfect. One tip on how to make the canvas stretch easier is to slightly dampen it with a spray bottle. It will lay flat while first getting your staples in and it is much more forgiving if you have too much tension on some of the canvas. As somebody mentioned this is NOT the typical way to do this, but if it works for you, then wonderful. I don't think it will sag over time, thanks to the paint acting as a sizing.
If stretched sufficiently, the pressure will buckle the frame over time- which is why reinforcing your corners with a cross-section is critical!
Ordered a shit ton of swatches…think I’m going to buy a blank canvas instead of making my own. Very excited.
It's amazing how different the room looks like with the dark painted frame on the art versus the white. Wow!
i agree that it should have been wrapped around a canvas support frame & then u frame it out when you’re done… also i’d staple it down with the same way you upholster a cushion …right? just my guess 😏
Swatching swagger! Loving the idea of turning something with loads of personal memories into wall art! It's like secret photo collage, with aesthetic appeal! 100% agree with perfectionism avoidance! Said as a Chartered Engineer, best think to do when trying something new is get stuck in, fail fast and learn fast, Edison said when F-ing up the light bulb "“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”
Perfection. This is my happy place.
Love this DIY! The white frame was key! It keeps those swatches as the focal point but still provided that structure! Also loved the mixed sizes, keeps it interesting. The best part of the video was you dressed as Hannibal saying "I can't be allowed in public, I don't do nice things" hahahah. Sending love 💗
I decided to watch this video while cleaning out my storage closet. After minute one, I was just standing watching and doing NOTHING! So I decided I was tired and would take a break! This project is really cool and the video is the funniest of yours that I 've watched. And thank you for having interesting and varied vocabulary... definitely missing from this genre of UA-cam videos, I've noticed.
Came here for a diy video, got a whole sermon for my life! "Perfection prevents progress"! Caroline effing Winkler everybody!! Love this woman! :D
"Anti social the way the DSM diagnoses, like bad behavior that is unsafe to the public." These vlogs give me liiiiiiife 🖤🤟
22:34 A+ on everything. With one exception, maybe fill the gap on the corner of the frame with Bondo or something. I see a little gap. I really admire the fact that you’re willing to take on these projects. I am not handy at all. 😢
As a fellow sample keeper, I loooove this. ❤❤
And as a fellow perfectionist, I really appreciate framing making a mess or letting myself make mistakes as a self-love language.
This was so relaxing to watch and I feel so inspired!
much better with the white frame
I'm so glad I found this video looking through your channel. I found one of your newer ones first and actually took a screenshot of the background so I could replicate this piece. Little did I know you did a whole video on it! Win for me!
Aww I’m so glad!! Let me know how it goes!❤️❤️
I LOVE your quirky attitude!! It's refreshing to how I feel on the regular lol
I also have swatches that I treasure, some are samples of super expensive fabric or wallpaper I can’t afford and this is a brilliant idea! And you crack me up too. Thanks for making my day!
"Progress not Perfection" is what we say in fashion. Great advice you give about the problem with perfection. Seth Godin wrote something too about "Shipped is better than perfection", so you get your product or content out there as good, and then work on making it better, while you learn about it. What a relief. Also love this project bc I work with color & swatches all day, and I too, hoard them like gold coins. This is a great way to admire them all day. Very happy, cheerful result!
Hey-canvas stretching 101: center canvas OVER frame; place first staples at midway points (work from center outwards;) there are special “pliers” made for canvas stretching sold at art stores like dickblick and you’d use them to clamp down on an edge of the canvas and pull outwards towards the corner as a very helpful friend would use that nice staple gun to fix the edges of the canvas in place along the back of the frame. Work on the piece by starting with any side, then proceeding to the side that is parallel to the first side. Then choose either of the remaining sides….
It’s simple but does take a bit of strength (and practice) and is really much easier if you can find an helpful friend to volunteer to be your assistant for the day….
Oh and the pressure from the canvas will distort the frame over time- avoid this future frustration by re-enforcing the corners with an extra length of wood- miter-cut the ends so that each corner of the frame has a little right triangle shape- length of reinforcement piece depends on the size of canvas (duh) but you want the triangles’ ends to end anywhere from 1/3 to the midway point along the total length of the piece you’re working on. Good luck- hope that helps for next time!
I've been stalling on a big project I've had in mind because of planning/perfectionism, and when you gave that shpeel (shpeal? speal?) about it I felt like 'wow this the perfect time for me to hear this'
You focusing on wall art is such a huge help! It’s been super challenging and when I go thrifting I literally don’t know what to pick so thank you!
I'm so glad!
I have a ton of swatches from my wedding color palette. Imma do ttthhiiissss
The fact that you said slacks makes you love you that much more🤣🥰
It really is the perfect size
Oh my gosh!!! I love this!!! I’m gonna make one for my bedroom!!! Woot!!!(I can make those noises because I’m old).
😂😂🙌🙌
Perfection is the enemy of progress… Winston Churchill
I love your vlogs and videos!!
She’s baaaaack! I loved this project, there’s something so satisfying about the order and colors! I’d love to try something like this someday
Thanks Rima ❤️❤️
I liked the tip about perfection. It was definitely something that I need to hear from time to time. (Like every day!)
I literally need this exact piece of art on a wall in my dining room - been looking forever
Never heard of loving swatches but I get it. When I was a kid I loved carpet samples. Any kind of samples. In the olden days you could order samples from ads in the back of magazines. I love this idea for bohemian art. A few carpet samples included would add textural interest. 😂
Evening Primrose Oil is reported to ease PMS symptoms and it worked for me.
Love it!!!
Loved it!
Looks nice!
Thanks to your videos, I have discovered a skill I didn’t know I had…. I can back point. I feel accomplished.
OMGosh you need canvas pliers!! TYSM you’ve made my ancient art degree valid!!!😅❤
Love this diy!
I’m loving it already!
Love so many things
about your channel
🎯😍🎯
Love your content, it’s eclectic, insightful and real. Can really relate to your pms struggles, went thr ough it myself and for years wondered why I turned into a ‘sociopath’ once a month, then realised I didn’t have your common or garden variety pms but indeed pmdd, I had all 11 symptoms according to DSM-5… I used to want nothing more than to be left alone and hide until it passed, became so difficult when I had a family and you just don’t have that luxury, anti depressants were the way forward for me and means my family members are still alive and not buried under the patio 😉 hope this helps 🤞🏼
Those colors would make a great eye shadow palette.
Oooo🙌❤️
Thanx!!! Looks good!!
Was wild about this in some other video & wondered who did it. So excited it was YOU!
