2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Center Drive Shaft Bearing Replace, Carrier Bearing

  • I replace the center drive shaft bearing, or carrier bearing, or CV Joint. (center drive shaft support bearing) It was a pretty simple job because I got a shop press from harbor freight to press the old bearing off, then I used a 1.5" ID pipe to smack the new bearing on only because the press wasn't tall enough to fit the whole drive shaft. I didn't show the re-installation, but you take it off the same way you put it on. I paid to much for this bearing because I was in a hurry and NAPA had one.

    I've been wanting to do this for the longest on my 96 ram,, but was kind of afraid to take that rubber boot off, plus figuring out how to take the bearing off, since it's pressed in, now I have a clear picture on how to tackle the job. Thank you so much !

    I had just finished assembling my HF press and thought I would check youtube for someone doing a similar job before removing my bearing. Turns out I have the same press and the same truck. Mine is a 2000 2500. Got my bearing online for $40. Thanks a bunch.

      glad I could help! the 1.5" pipe was key, as well at the 3" exhaust pipe for the inside dust cover.

      I didn't have any pipes the correct size around. I ended up partially pressing the bearing on prior to seating the lower cover. I got lucky and was able to get it seated with a screwdriver and hammer. I had a carrier bearing press tool from harbor freight that worked alright for pressing on the bearing and outer (smaller front cover). I bent that small front facing cover with my press but luckily it's symmetrical and shaft still seems balanced over all. Its all back together now and the truck has never driven better since I have owned it. 315k and counting. thanks again.

    xBARRACUDDAx The 1.5" sch40 pipe was the ticket in properly seating the new bearing. Let me know if you need any help, thanks for watching!

      I'll keep that in mind, I think I'm going to get me a press like yours in the near future, but for now, I have my hands full changing the whole EVAP system on my truck; Hoses, lines, sensor/solenoid/valve, charcoal canister and even the gas cap, so I can get rid of the check engine light to get it ready for the emissions test, arghh!
      After that, I'll be concentrating on the drive shaft, and if I need any help, I'll shoot you a message for some advice, but with the tips you gave me, it should be a straight forward task. And thank you again !

      Yikes! Good luck with the EVAP system, my suggestion would be to buy a diesel:)

    take a inline cut off wheel, cut both sides of the bearing frame by the flange that bolts up. slide the steel off the rubber then take your air hammer and knock the retainer off. then air hammer the bearing assembly off the shaft. repeat to replace new bearing.

    Did u have vibration between 40 and 50 mph my bearing sounds like its scraping and vibration at 40 to 50 mph i think its comming from that bering

    Musher Deeds thanks for checking back. So on the sling that hangs down the rubber has completely come unattached from the center boot so there's all kinds of play down there but the bearing still sounds smooth. So I'm thinking that could be the cause of the occasional rough vibration. As for the noise when it's cold I'm not sure what that's gotta be but I'll go after the carrier bearing and hanger to see if that changes anything. Thanks again. Your video will be a great help!

    I have a 1999 Dodge Ram. I have a noise coming from the rear. If I and going around 40 then let off the gas then press it again it make a humming type of loud noise. Is that the same symptoms you had ?

    • @MusherDeeds
      @MusherDeeds  9 років тому

      Mine sounded like a grinding noise, and because the engine is so loud I could only hear it when I let off and coasted. I would suggest jacking up the rear safely, chock the wheels, and put it in neutral. spin your rear tires and listen for the noise. That is how I figured it out. I listened and touched things to locate the bearing.

    How many times do you have to show people the bearing is bad? Ha. Ha. Good video i am at this present moment changing mine on my 2001 Dodge. I also decided to change the rear seal on the transfer case and all the u joints while i am into it. I did not use o e m u joints they dont have grease fittings i did use u joints that is approved by Dodge with grease fittings and they have the same 2 year 24000 mile warranty

    So I've got a 99 1500 and the slinger or hanger that holds the carrier bearing looks a little different but it's basically the same thing. But my question is for anyone else that's had this problem,what kind of other noises have you heard. The rubber on mine is rotted out and the drive shaft has a little bit of play. I can't hear any noises of a blown out bearing and I haven't jacked it up yet it just hums when it's a little cold. I just keep hearing a noise every so often and I wanna make sure this could be it. Thanks I appreciate the vid. Also do you think it's a possibility that this could get a sudden rough vibration making it sound like the transmission is stuck between 1st and 2nd gear in acceleration from a stopped position? That's another issue I'm dealing with.
    Thanks again.

    • @MusherDeeds
      @MusherDeeds  9 років тому

      brady adams A loud noise when its cold? The only noise I hear when its cold is the power steering and brake booster pump. When the hydro oil is cold, it makes a loud humming when I turn the wheel. When this bearing starts to wear out, when you coast to a stop there should be a humming or a grinding, coming from the rear end. You need to jack it up (be safe and chock the wheels) put it in neutral and spin the rear wheels and listen. If there is any play what so ever in the drive shaft, side to side, that is going to wear all the cross bearing out in your drive shaft. This bearing should not effect the speed or anything to deal with the trans. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good Luck, I hope you figure it out!

      +Randall Cardwell Hmmm, Maybe the pinion gear in the rear? I really have no idea what could be causing that.

    I just got done replacing my carrier bearing based on your video, if Dildo Draggins (across his face) knew shit about working on anything, he would know that you showed more than enough to get the job done.
    sadly the carrier bearing wasn't my problem, but it did need replacing because the rubber bushing around the bearing was worn out.
    thanks man!

    Musher i can t get out the center support bearing to take out the drive shaft. This is because i can t get to the two bolts which hold the bearing because from one side i have the tank and the other i have the exhaust pipe. Can i get out the support which has 4 bolts to the frame or should i get to the 2 upper bolts ?? Thank you

    Did mine a few years back. Going to do it again. My zip tie holding the boot is just fine. Of corse I will have to cut it off. They're cheap. I'm going to try doing it without removing rear u joint. Also a bearing separator works on breaking it loose Then beat it off the rest of the way. If all else fails. Use a grinder to carefully score the bearing and then crack it with a chisel. Heating with a torch helps once you get the rubber off of the bearing. Wear glasses.

    So there shouldnt be any play in the carrier, or is there ??

    • @MusherDeeds
      @MusherDeeds  8 років тому

      No there really shouldn't be any play at all. It is a bearing after all.

      I understand that but the rubber that surrounds it has some give it seems .. Well im yankin the driveshaft tonight and doin some inspecting and im guessin its the front ujoint rear shaft because only under a load do i have the buzzing vibe and really get worse @ 40~ but when i let off the throttle it smooths right the fxxk out ..

      I would jack up the rear then and put it in neutral and spin the rear wheels until they line up. I don't think that spline goes in any other way into the trans so it doesn't make sense to me why it doesn't line up. Make sure the front wheels are chocked if they are also not off the ground.

      +Randall Cardwell if your bearing keeps going out there is something unbalanced in your drive shaft.
