  • 2004.5 Dodge Ram 3500 dually that has a bad center support bearing or carrier bearing for the driveshaft. I am replacing the bearing without a press. I use a cut off wheel and grinder to remove the old bearing of this two piece driveshaft. I also re-install it without using a press as well since my press was not tall enough to accommodate the driveshaft. So I use some long punches to install the bearing with a hammer.

The safety measures are a must. I reversed a 2001 ram onto ramps after speeding the whole day at salvage yards looking for a driveshaft, so excited to have found one I didn't engage the e-brake. Well as soon as I tried to stab it into the trans she rolled. The u bolt closer to tire got my shoulder and the lower shock mounting bracket got my head. If he would have not had 20's inch wheels from the newer rams I may not of made it. My shoulder had an indentation of half an inch from the u blolt, my head well just got really dizzy. Death and permanent physical damage is no joke.

I totally agree. Working on cars and trucks is nothing to take lightly especially when you are talking about 4+ tons. Glad you are okay.

    Very helpful. Thanks!
Re installing and seating the new center bearing, mine took over an hour of rotating and tapping to get it to seat all the way.
I elected to do the 3 ujoints while the shafts were out.
    A few notes:
    - Remember to paint alignment lines across all the shaft connects before removal!
    - R&Ring the shafts is not bad. Did an '06 w 300k, rusty Northern truck= pita! Even with a 20ton press the ujoints & center bearing were a very time consuming job. Odd; the 'shoulders' on the oem ujoints made contact with the yoke before the cups were near removable (never had that prob before on other jobs). Fully removing the cups required grinding notches on opposite sides of the partially pressed-out cups to pry the cups out using a chisel and sledge. It works but it's a pita!
    - Securely jackstand rear wheels & release parking brake so you can spin the rear tires to rotate/align the rear diff yoke during install.
Thanks for taking the time to post!

Also: recommend using Mopar oem carrier bearing. Aftermarket carriers don't have a great reputation for comparative longevity.
