Does your truck vibrate or make an awful noise behind you when you accelerate? This video explores one of the potential causes: a loose, worn, or broken drive shaft carrier bearing! This bearing supports a joint in the drive shaft that some trucks have, due to the distance between the transmission or transfer case, and the rear differential. Watch this video to see how you can diagnose the symptoms yourself!
After you finish this video, check out more of our diagnostics that you can do yourself in your own driveway or garage!

After over 40 years repairing vehicles it’s amazing to this day what is out there on the road
I've purchased multiple parts from this company and nearly all of them have failed within a year or two. I purchased a new carrier bearing and had it professionally installed by a mechanic who has over 35 years experience and the thing disintegrated in less than a year of mild driving and very few miles. Do not purchase parts from this company
This is exactly the problem with my Nissan Frontier 2WD. I bpurchased the U joints and the carrier bearing and was going to repair it myself. Well, be 76 years old and post aorta surgery, I don't have the strength to break the bolts loose at the differential. This old man has got to know his limitations. I had scheduled it to be repaired at a local transmission shop.
Might want to add that a bent/warped driveshaft (loss of balancing wrights, dents in the shaft from road debris) could cause premature failure to the center bearing. I've learned many tips and tricks from your channel. Thanks for taking the time to help others!
Thank you VERY MUCH! This is exactly the information I needed to know. Complete, concise, articulated perfectly. Now I know what to do. You're awesome!
Also important to mark the positions of where the front and rear flanges were originally mated or else you can have balance issues when you're done. I replaced my carrier bearing on my 2000 Tundra well before it needed replacing but 185k on the original was playing with fire for sure. I've watched many of your A1 videos and you and Sue do a marvelous job of explaining things at a 9th grade comprehension level, which is just the right method for many of us out here laying on our backs trying to fix something we've never done before. Please keep the info coming sir!!
Thank you for the information, that really helps me to understand what I got to do to fix my truck.
i was hoping you would show how you guys actually unstall/install new carrier bearing on the "verakle".
After reading this I couldn’t stop laughing every time he said “verakle”.
Freinds who wood let their vehercle reach sucha detramental state, hope u learnt sumthin
Clearly says noise
That camera quality is AMAZING it gave me a great visual
It was nice that you used a older drive shaft

Great video. About to take this job on. Carrier bearing and all 3 u joints. All at once.
Great informative video. Thanks!
Great info. My rear drive shaft totally broke off without warning my 2009 Chevy Suburban
Really helpful, thanks! I had one replaced on my 86 Nissan truck, only to have that one fail in just 4 months. I've been trying to figure out why that happened, since the mechanic said there was nothing else wrong with the truck (I'm assuming U joints etc.)
Nice video, thanks. Guessing you did all 3 U-Joints on that shaft as well. Would have been good to see the completed reinstall. (imho)
YES DUDE! I just replaced mine...like this morning. LOUD clanking and cranking noise along with alot...ALOT of vibration and crunching noise imagine crunching a bag of potato chips but so loud. The noise was everyonce in a while, like once a week at first. Then this last week noise here and there about once or twice a day, this weekend, non-stop noise and vibration. The one on my truck looked pretty bad, probably worse than the one you showed, rubber wise, except the shaft and metal parts were not so rusty (texas desert). One of the three u-joints was crunchy moving one way and totally seized moving it the other way (the other two worked perfectly). Replaced both the u-joint and carrier bearing and the truck is now running fine. To think i took it to the auto shop about 4 weeks ago and they told me it was my suspension and brakes. Had those replaced, $1500.00 dollars and three weeks after that the noise was back. In all honesty the truck needed those parts replaced but still man that was a little dissapointing. Thanks to your video i was able to diagnose and take care of it. Keep up the great work, you guys are freaking awesome.
Your best series yet

Ty so much very informative and to the point 👉, will be doing that job on my truck im trying to learn from pros before taking apart and ordering parts
Excellent videos here!
Love watching the motivation.

Is the howling noise normal when accelerating if you have a bad carrier bearing?
Thanks a lot for the great video.
Great video!

Can these sound like a wheel hub assembly going bad? I'm getting a kind of droning sound, which I thought was a wheel bearing. Replaced both rear hubs I got from you folks, but the droning is still persisting. Climbed under and the carrier can wiggle back and forth like 1/8-1/4 inch, but I don't know if they're supposed to have a little play.
Thank you very much, you might just have saved me a lot of money!

1A, appreciate your videos. Very much. I went to your website, I have bought from you before. But could not find a carrier bearing 2008 Dakota.
Thank you, I just got smarter today.🤙🏽

Is there a video on how to put it back together?
Thanks for all this very useful advice. I learned something new: also inspect (and replace if needed) the U joints because they possible could the cause of a worn carrier bearing/rubber. Will apply this on my car, a manual Ford Capri 3.0S v6 from 1978. The gearbox lever goes a bit up and down (shaking) while driving. When inspecting the underside of the car I felt some play (+- 10mm when pushing it by hand) at the rubber of the carrier CV joint. I hope it will fix the issue... greetz Erwin
Made my whole day (life) easier. Thank You very much.
Great video

...nice explanation
Great vid thanx
Nice job
Your channel makes some great videos. Replaced the u joint at the pumpkin a year ago. Just replaced the carrier bearing and seals at transfer case output and rear differential input this last week while doing the carrier bearing. Now it squeals. Thought it was the brake until I hacked it up and turned it by hand and could hear it coming from the center of the truck. What is the fix to this?
Thanks in advance
Good video
I have a 2008 standard F-150. I got on it merging into traffic, more than normal. I started hearing a clanking sound after that. Only when I'm accelerating. Not when I'm coasting. A friend of mine told me it could be the carrier bearing. Hard to say I know I'm just what I'm telling you but what do you think?
So I spent a ton of money trying to fix my steering wheel from shaking. I replaced rotors, breaks, fixed my rims, changed tyres, balanced, wheel alignment. Ive done it all and still its shaking. Would this be next bet to check.
I'm wondering if my issue with my Rav4 is this. The vehicle shakes almost violently. The seats shake also.
I know the carrier baring is about this area. Having shop look at it.
Thank you, now I know what to look for.
Excellent
Thank you
useful video! thx!¬
I have a 4x2 F-150 and have had to repair/replace the hanger bearing 4 times and it's failing again. I think mud and other crap get inside and cause damage as I'm often at the landfill. They also usually replace the U joints and re-balance the drive shaft.
The first time around it was costly as on the 4x2 it's not a serviceable driveshaft so they have to do extra work.
It's a 2009 and at the end of its life due to rust and KM's.
On another note, the driveshaft has been to two shops, and they both used different techniques. Sadly both seem to fail after a year.
I have 2004 motor home with ford E-450 super duty chasis. I have some kind of high pitch noise going down highway. Should I replace u-joints and carrier barring, as a starting point. It has 51 thousand miles. I don't feel any vibration. do you have an idea how much it might cost to have it all replaced by an auto mechanic. What are your thoughts.
My 06 2wd avalanche is a 1 piece drive shaft. It makes a loud grindy click when changing from any position. P to D or R ect it vibrates badly at anything over 65 mph.
Also having the same issues with my 96 ext 2wd s10
Good content 👍

Hi, I have a very strange situation where only when I slow right down to crawl speed like when stopping at a toll booth I get a very heavy clunking sound and I can feel it through the car but once I start to move again there is no noise or vibration. It is a 2001 Ford explorer Sport Trac 4x4, do you have any ideas on this problem.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 and thanks for the video
No problem Salvador!
What replacement carrier bearing would be best?
Would a bad driveshaft carrier bearing make a whining or whistle sound, or is that most likely differential?
Diff. That would probably be gear wear.
tyvm :>)
On my vheerickle I can shake the drive shaft up down left and right a decent bit. Guess it’s time for a change!
Bought an aftermarket shaft, and all the joints are pretty stiff. No parts list, seller is clueless as well. How does one measure for new joints and carrier to rebuild it with good parts?
Hey what part number did is that ? I have a 2011 Ford F-150 xlt 2 ps Drive shaft 2wd
I have a rumbling noise issue on my Mercedes CL500 when driving & have replaced pretty much all of the suspension components i.e. UCAs, LCAs, strut rods, bottom strut's bushings, etc... but the noise still there. Will a bad driveshaft center support bearing causes a rumbling noise when the car is in gears & moving? Please advise. Thanks
+megatran2010 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
My 2021 Ranger only has 5k miles and I get a random belt squeel sound coming from the back... Bad Center bearing?
I replaced the right rear axle on my 2003 Explorer. Nuw as I am driving everything goes smoothly until I reach 20 to 30 mph, then there's what start as a low winding noise the rapidly increases in sound and a knocking or clunking noice that feels like something is coming apart in the drivetrain. The only way to stop it is to slow down or stop. Help?
Would it make a clunk noise when put into gear?
Hey bud the carrier bearing I got has a small like sleeve with a odd collor, a video on the reinstall of a bearing would be great 👍 especially when they come with extra parts. Looked all over online an nodda damn thing that’s helpful for what I need, wasted $26 on a Haynes online manual with NO Dice for what I needed it for. Lolz I’d put it in a shop for them to slap it back together but they all claim that they don’t have 5mins to slap it together for me, even offered them $100 for 5mins of their time. It’s all ready to go on old one is off new ujoints are in just need that damn diagram for the carrier bearing install of the new one. To a 99 GMC Sonoma
I NEED IT THAT DRIVESHAFT FOR MY TRUCK,. COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT OR WHERE CAN I GET THEM??
Everytime i let off my brake from a complete stop a feel a soft jerk BEFORE i even put my foot on the gas. Is this my slip yoke needing grease?
You forgot to show Marking / scribing / pin-punching the Yokes and their attachments at Transmission / Xfer case and at the Differential housing.
Awesome that my problem
@1aauto Please reply. I need some guidance and dont want to pay for a mechanic to diagnose.
There is some INTERMITTENT metal on metal grinding/scratching but only at low speeds. If i take off easy from a dead stop, I'll hear the grinding for about 2 seconds, then it'll stop for a few seconds then grind some more. Itll do this until my speed gets up past 35mph... then it stops. If I'm at a dead stop and I punch the gas and go, I dont hear anything then either.
So I just got under my truck and grabbed the drive shaft right behind the center support bearing and theres slop in it.. I can move the drive shaft around with my hand. Do you guys think that this is what's causing the sound I'm hearing?
I'm no expert but might be some gears, if it's an auto your transmission is probably deactivating and reactivating your first gear reduction. But the best way to diagnose is to get under and start wiggling stuff, see what spins and what doesn't and weather or not it's supposed to.
is the carrier bearing serviceable? if not should have stated it
How do you grease a carrier bearing? thanks
There's smoke coming out of my cars rear drive shaft. Any ideas why this is happening?
You well informed tu
Amazing how some people simply do not take care of their vehicles.
Every year I check underbody for rust and TAKE CARE if it.
Only takes 1 hour and makes my car last much much longer, but more important: I can sell it for much better price!

Would a carrier bearing make a whining noise or hum?
How you disassemble the center barring
Interesting point about the UJoint heating up and binding more. I'd never heard that before.
My 2013 CRV AWD had the same issue. It is unserviceable so the entire drive shaft needed to be replaced.
What’s a veerical?
You ought to call this a "center bearing" replacement because when I hear carrier bearing I think of the differential carrier bearings inside of them. Too vague of a term.
I NEED HELP! I drive a Jeep and it doesn’t have a carrier bearing but it’s doing what you described. Speaking and vibrating when around 40 mph and when going uphill. Do you know what this could be?
+Reed Riley We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 two-wheel while driving it there is a noise sounds like coming from the front wheel on the left side a roaring sound if you turn to the right while driving the noise and vibration in the steering wheel will go a way just as soon as the wheels are straight again the noise comes back or if you go to the left the noise stays there what causes that
Sound like wheel bearing
The amount of movement in the mounting bracket for the carrier bearing @ 1:16 was scary. That rusty thing is paper thin lol
Can that also make a squeaky sound? I have a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 and i hear a squeaky noise when i back up and also when i go forward. All from the rear.
+Roger Taylor Thanks for watching! It could cause a squeaking noise, but you will typically experience the other symptoms we talk about in the video.
I'm having a big issue as to what driveshaft goes in my 2004 Ford f150 new body style extended cab 6 and 1/2 foot bed. 4.6L. cannot find any answers to this truck!! Plz help
Iv been told that my carrier bearing is not replaceable in order to replace it I have to replace the whole driveshaft. It's a 2 piece drive shaft.
Main rule if you have 1 bad joint replace all joints just like struts replace in pairs never only 1
Can a shaky drive shaft cause the engine grow a rod?
I got a 1994 nissan 4x4 pick up and it makes a grinding sound when i let off at anything above 50mph

What would cause rear tires to spin unevenly at the same spot?
Wrong size tires
