SM64 - Mario Wings to the Sky - 0x A Presses

  • I collect the star Mario Wings to the Sky in Bob-omb Battlefield using 0 A presses. For the record, this is TAS.
This video is an improvement from my previous video in which I collected this star using 1 A press. You can find that video here: • SM64 - Mario Wings to ... . At that time, I believed it to be infeasible to use a goomba staircase to reach the secrets, because the number of goombas required was exponential in terms of the number of bounces. However, since then, I developed two new goomba structures: the goomba cluster and the goomba oasis, described as follows:
The goomba cluster is a group of goombas released at a single HOLP, but at different angles. This causes the goombas to be in slightly different positions, meaning that each of their hitboxes can be accessed with precise enough positioning. Consequently, the required number of goombas for a staircase dropped from exponential to quadratic.
The goomba oasis is a group of goombas released via transport cloning using a single HOLP. Transport cloning causes the goomba clone to end up midway between the interaction point and the HOLP. Since the goomba interaction may occur anywhere within a roughly circular region surrounding the goomba triplet, this means goomba clones can be released anywhere within a roughly circular region of half that radius midway between the goomba triplet and the HOLP. This allows the freedom to place multiple goomba clones in various positions in a difficult-to-reach area, and this was pivotal for collecting both secrets in one go.
Here is a play-by-play of what I do. First, I create goomba staircase up to a particular point above the floating island, and place the HOLP there. Then, I exit and reenter the course to reset the goombas (but the HOLP placement will stay). Next, I use shell hyper speed to collect the lowest three secrets. Then, I create a goomba oasis between the fourth and fifth secrets. Finally, I create a second goomba staircase up to the oasis, and then ride both the staircase and oasis to collect the last two secrets in one go, and lastly collect the star.

Mario 64 Quantum Mechanics at its best. I love how scientific you approach these tasks. This feels like a really cool physics/computer science paper in video form :D Great job! But I wonder how much time a video like this consumes. That must be a monster! ...nevermind, I should just read descriptions. 55 hours is actually far less than I expected. Ye did Lord Koek riseth for the secret numbers in the sky using the mushrooms men. He did not use the Vile Button nor did I in this sermon. The mentioned button will go unused for eternity with no end in sight. For use of the button is forbidden & never must the button be used, Lest the button destroy us utterly.
Though the button's promise of rising height is enticing, we must never succumb to it's sly trickery. For the use of the button is both sin of the highest order, & utterly unneeded in this quest. Never must the button be used, lest its perverse curse crush us, & utterly demolish everything we've worked so tirelessly to successfully complete on this journey of ours.
Though our quest is yet incomplete, upon one glorious morning we will rise & see Lord Koek doth posteth evident video proving the vile button once & forevermore be unrequired to complete this wondrous quest. The Lord Koek must then rest, for with the expulsion of the Vile Button's hold on our spirit, He doth expend the entirety of His glorious mercy, though he wilst riseth once more to rescue us from the Vile Button, for in time, its demonic presence endlessly resurges in still more worlds.

Its actuallly impressive how you manage o dissecate all the gameplay mechanics from this game, your mind can see things others couldnt years after the game release, you sure have good grades in math, keep up the good work.

So, Scuttlebugs can't have a jamboree, but goombas get to have one in the sky? I think Mario is a bit discriminatory as to which of his enemies get to have jamborees.
Serious question, though, are scuttlebugs the only enemies that have homes that can be reset in that way?

    • @pannenkoek2012

Only rarely am I able to copy and paste inputs, since it can easily desync. The only way for it to sync is to have Mario start in the same position and angle each time with the camera in the same position and angle each time. I could do this if I used walls to align Mario and had him zoom in with C^ to align the camera, but that's out of the way and there are too many other variables going on with cloning objects. Not to mention, I have to release the object in a different spot each time, so it wouldn't be worth it in this case.
