Power Steering Pump Replacement: 1993 Lexus SC300 (2JZ-GE)

  • A Duralast (Autozone) power steering pump was replaced under lifetime warranty only after 2 months of use due to a loud constant whining sound not caused by air in the system, but from noisy bearings. So far, the new replacement operates quietly but we'll just have to wait and see. Continued below...
    Update 11-25-2017: The Duralast PS pump continues to perform quietly with no steering issues. Very satisfied. (your experience may differ).
    Notes:
    Bleeding the System:
    (1)Fill the reservoir with new fluid.
    (2)Raise the front of the car so the wheels don't touch the ground.(3)Turn steering wheel all the way to the right and all the way to the left to right several times with the ENGINE OFF.
    (4) Recheck the fluid level and make sure it's full and make sure you recap the reservoir.
    (5)Turn on Engine.
    (6)Turn steering wheel all the way to the right and hold it for a few seconds.
    (7)Turn steering wheel to the left and hold it for a few seconds.
    (8) Repeat steps 4-7 a few times.
    (9) Test drive.
    (10) Repeat bleeding procedure if needed.
    Tips for leak free installation:
    1. If you decide to dismantle and overhaul the PS reservoir, DO NOT attempt to reuse the old rubber gasket that seals the lid (seen @2:09 in video). Over the years, the old gasket has most likely hardened and /or become deformed. Reusing the old gasket will likely end up with leaks. Instead, use a gasket maker that is resistant to transmission oils (i.e.,Permatex Automatic Transmission Gasket Maker).
    2. Always use two NEW crush washers (seen@3:24). The Duralast pump came with two new aftermarket crush washers which work as good as the single unit OEM ones (see below for part#)

    My power steering pump just went out on my 92 sc300 and I'm fixing it myself thanks to your video..I'm saving about $300 doing it myself. Great vids. Also if you get the chance would love a video on the sc300 oil change and transmission fluid change.

      +Jamaal West I'm really glad the video helped you out. As far as an oil change is pretty straight forward and there are lots of videos on UA-cam. I just performed a manual trans and a differential fluid change a few months ago but unfortunately no footage was captured. (So there wont be any video on this subject anytime soon).

    neat to see another person working on the 2jz. just did a gs300 ac compressor on my 1992 sc300 20% larger. had to remove everything you. did. ps,battery,even light for dryer accumulator.. like the high speed camera effect.

      Mike Fortier Hey thanks for watching and glad you liked it. Yeah, likewise, I replaced the old leaky compressor on this car two years ago. It's too bad I couldn't put R12 back in the system because I liked that it got to temps below 40 degrees.

    Hey boss love the Vid. I am about to change this pump on my is300 do you know what size the O-ring is can’t find it anywhere. Also I see there are seal kits with a gasket but this is nowhere mention in the vid about a whole gasket. I assume I don’t need that right? Just the crusher washers and o-ring.

      Thank you sir. Two crush washers and one rubber o-ring was all that was needed. The reman pump I got from Autozone came with them.

      Sorry, I don't know the size of the 0-ring from memory. I'd just take the old one to the store and match one.

      @@strumpeteer all good the pump I got came with them lol. BUT all I did was tighten the pulley bolt and the knock went away. Hopefully get to return 300 bucks of supplies! Well see in a week thanks again

    Hi strumpeteer I've had tight power steering for 2 yrs now and I replaced my pump with the driftmotion pump and the high pressure hose. The steering is now even tighter when the car is at a stand still and under 2k rpms. But when I get going up to speed it actually is smoother than it was before. Like how power steering should actually be. I just can't understand why it's tight like crazy when under 2k rpm. I thought it would be the evo unit on the steering rack? And Im planning on switching my rack out just to see if it helps. Hopefully u see this because I literally can't find anyone who can help me diagnose this problem. Thanks

    Hey strump i am getting a used 2jzge to put in my sc300 what all should i replace while i have the engine out since i am sure there will be things easier to reach with it being out.

      BKkillaz Hmmm, I would definitely replace both upper and lower oil pan seals (FIPG) whether it's leaking or not, overhaul/clean everything inside the oil pans (like the baffels, oil strainer, replace oil strainer gasket), oil dip stick o-ring, oil filter bracket gasket, rear main oil seal, replace that coolant hose on the back of the block that connects to the heater valve, valve cover gaskets, remove/ clean/ check sensors (coolant temp & knock), oil pressure switch, and check/ replace engine mounts. Check oil pump for leaks (o-rings).

      @@equalizir1 Mine was not removal (yours might be different). All I could do was rinse repeatedly with mineral spirits over and over again until it was decent. If you dare to attempt to jam something in there to try to clean it, be careful, you may break the screen.

    quick question. I just replaced my ps pump on my sc300 recently, and it continues to leak. Either out of A) the main banjo bolt fitting that goes directly into the pump, or B) the o ring i used for the reservoir onto the pump is too small.
    Now, ive tightened the banjo bolt pretty tight, so i cant see it being that, unless where it attaches to on the pump itself (that wierd looking bolt thing) isnt tight enough itself; is it possible that that part isnt tight enough? Im unaware that it can even be loosened/tightened not enough.
    And how tight of a fit should it be for the o ring on the reservoir to seal properly?

      +Bobeto Slim Hi. When you replaced your ps pump, you also should have installed a NEW o-ring on the bottom of the reservoir and two NEW crush washers on the banjo, torqued to 36ft*lbf. Pumps from Autozone come with everything you need. Using old crushers will have a risk of leaking. Besides the seals on the ps itself, other areas where leaks can occur can be the reservoir cap and reservoir lid gasket (the top part of the reservoir that you put the cap on). Good luck.

      +Bobeto Slim Oh yeah, the return hose can and will get brittle for a car this old which can leak after changing the ps pump. Replace that too.

      strumpeteer I bought my ps pump off a reliable sc enthusiast here on the west side, so im very confident the pump is fine, but i had to purchase anything else i needed. I did not replace the crush washers, which i will as soon as possible just in case, and i will replace the o ring on the reservoir with a bigger one, because i think the one i used just is a tad too small, it didnt feel that tight when i slipped the reservoir onto the pump.

      Oh, and yah i replaced that return line this previous weekend because it started leaking real bad a few days after replacing the pump. A 3$ hose form napa auto parts :)

      OEM is 44327-30040 it's a one piece design. You can use aftermarket ones (two separate washers of the same size). Just take the old crush washer unit and match them up at your local parts store.

    strumpeteer I'm about to buy a re manufactured power steering pump for my manual 92 SC300 since my mechanic told me mine is leaking. The one I'm about to get is by AAE (atlantic auto equipment) its the only one that comes with a reservoir. Do you think it will still leak or have problems early on since its re manufactured? It also looks like power steering/dex 3 sludge is built up around the hoses or unless its just dripping down the hoses. Do you think there could be leaking from other places besides the power steering pump?

      Remanufactured stuff is a hit or miss. I had to exhange Duralast reman pump because it was so noisy, but now it's on its 3rd year working great. My Duralast alternator lasted four years. If you're going to go with a reman pump, hit up your local Autozone (Duralast) or Pep Boys (A1 Cardone). Both offer lifetime warranty.
      Since your in there, replace the return line hoses no matter what. Given the age of these cars, they're probably hard as rocks and will break when you install your new pump. Replace them and then see if you still have leaks.

      Autozone said the AAE has a lifetime warranty. They have cardone but no reservoir. How many return line hoses are there and do you know part numbers? Can I also get them from autozone or should I order on www.lexuspartsnow.com/1992-lexus-sc300-parts.html ?

      Goto Autozone and tell the guy you want 2 feet of 3/8" rubber hose that is safe to use as a powersteering return line (low pressure). I dunno, maybe $1.99 per foot? or Prestone sells a package of 2 feet of powersteering return line found in the aisle. Be careful when you remove the old return line hose- If you have to apply much force, cut slits on the hose ends to make it easier. Good luck.

      There's only one return line, but is divided into sections. You really only have to replace the section that connects directly to the reservoir (see 3:10 in video).

    I'm having trouble removing the ac compressor on my 93 Lexus sc300. I removed all the bolts but now a power steering line is preventing me from completely removing the compressor. what should I do?

      bob builder If you can't snake the compressor by bending the rubber portion of the PS lines, there are a few other ways to do it but might get messy: Option 1. Remove the battery tray and radiator cowl. The high pressure PS line connected at the pump can be swiveled if you loosen the 22mm banjo bolt. Snake the AC compressor through the top of the engine. or... Option 2. Loosen the 22mm bolt of the high pressure line connection at the rack and swivel and retighten in place. In front of that, remove the two bolts that hold the hard line portion of the PS hose to make more room.
      I used option #1.

      +Ivan valencia Put a 14mm socket with a breaker bar on the pulley directly to the left of the the power steering pulley and turn it CLOCKWISE and hold it. That will remove the tension.

    What size crush washer do I need for this job? And what about the orings? Where would I buy o rings specifically for this that can fit?

      I have no idea what size they are however....Go to your nearest Autozone, tell clerk you want to see the PS pump for your SC300, take out the two included crush washers from the box, tell the clerk to match up the included crush washers with loose ones they sell in the store. Do the same for the o-ring. Or.... buy the PS pump from Autozone because it comes with O-ring and crush washers.

      Two crush washers required that connects high pressure side hose to the pump. There is one o-ring that mates the reservoir to the pump. @@804MRMAN

    Hey Strum, got a question for you. I have a 98 SC300 with 38K miles and the power steering fluid has never been replaced and it's black in color; yet, the steering works perfectly. I decided to change/flush it by connecting a hose to the high pressure line and capping its connecting port in the reservoir. I used Castrol PS fluid with GM Dexron spec filling the reservoir each time I started the engine and shut if after 2 seconds. This way, the pump doesn't suck the reservoir dry. Having done this, I now have a tick tick sound after 1700 RPMs and the car is pulling to the right quite strongly. What do you think has happened by changing the fluid?

      Did you mean you connected a hose to the return line (low pressure line) and that hose to a refuse container? Did you bleed the system? (most common culprit) Other things: Did you inspect the return line hose before reconnecting? (cracks can introduce air). Is your steering sticky?

      I suppose the top hose indeed is the low-pressure return line so yes, I connected that line to a hose and the hose to a refuse container. Yes, I bled the system by turning the wheels to each side all the way. The return line hose is in perfect condition. One thing though is that if I open the lid of the reservoir with the engine running, no fluid sprinkles out. I was expecting it to so I'm not sure that's normal. The fluid inside the reservoir is not bubbly or foamy. Not sure what you mean by sticky steering but if I'm driving down the road and let go the steering, it will pull strongly to the right. And then there's that ticking sound similar to valves knocking. Been like this now for 1K miles.

      Sounds like your steering rack has stuck valves. Try adding a half a bottle of Seafoam Transtune to your ps reservoir (of course you must first remove as much ps fluid from it as much Transtune you will add to it). This worked for me when my steering felt sticky (steering wheel binds or it doesn't center when I let go the wheel while the car is moving). I left this cleaner in for a few days before I reflushed the system. BTW, leaving the cap off the reservoir with the engine running won't always sputter out fluid (at least mine doesn't do that).

      Ok, I got the Seafoam Transtune and poured half the bottle into the PS reservoir just as the instructions say. I couldn't believe how dark brown my 1K mile Castrol fluid had gotten. I suppose it's the detergent properties in the fluid that is cleaning up my rack and pinion + pump that got it this way. RESULT: it got reid of that tick tick sound similar to valves knocking BUT I still have the strong pulling to the right. I now understand why this is called "sticky steering" because when I let go the steering wheel (at low speed of course) I can see it making these short jumps to the right. Looks like I have to leave that Seafoam in there a while and pour the rest of the bottle too. What do you think, Strum?

      I'd take baby steps and let that initial half bottle of Transtune do it's thing (well let's hope). After a week, see if there's little or no improvement and it's your call whether to add more or not.

    The short hose on my 2000 SC400 is leaking I don't see it leaking anywhere else.. Would it be the short hose?? Or the pump?

      +steveazusa It can leak from either the pump or the hose. Use degreaser to clean the area up and then replace the hose along with the clamp (I'm assuming the low pressure return hose?) Be careful with the the alternator below on your SC400.

      It's the short thick hose that runs off the top of Where you pour power steering fluid.. All the stuff is on that hose I checked it with a flashlight and it drips in the same spot whenever I pull my car out of the garage

      steveazusa Yeah that's the return hose. Overtime (16 years in your case) the ends of the hose become brittle and can leak. Replace the hose and clamp. Before attempting to remove an old hose from the lines, make longitudinal slits on the hose ends with a utility blade to lower your risk of breaking something else.

    Is it similar to sc400?

      xxslick105 Yes, the concepts are similar, but the SC400 is a totally different engine. The bolt locations and torque specs will be different. Also, on the SC400, you may have to be extra careful because the alternator is directly underneath.

      @BabyDee....Could it be that you used power steering fluid instead of the recommended ATF Dexron? Makes a big difference ..also there are video's that point this out concerning Lexus & Toyota's. Good Luck!

    Strumpeteer I'm about to install the power steering pressure hose along with my power steering pump this week. The pump is brand new, its the AAE still (atIantic auto equipment). I was able to find a power steering hose from a 97. Do you think it will fit in a 92? Online it says 2 different part numbers and shows it wont but both hoses look exactly the same. Also shows as discontinued for 92 when I try to order on lexuspartsnow.com. its part number 44411 2410. the other part is

      Both hoses with part numbers you posted appear the same to me but they are outrageously priced over $500 bucks! Honestly, I couldn't tell you if the 1997+ hose would fit. On the other hand, I would never spend that much $ just for a hose assembly. I'd try to find a shop that rebuilds hoses and would probably cost less than a hundred bucks to do it.       I know right when I saw that I was like wtf theres no way Im paying that lol. Its like 300 for one at Autozone for a 92. I'll try the 97 power steering hose I got used. If that doesnt end up fitting I have the one from drift motion on the way too which was 80 with shipping (www.driftmotion.com/1JZ-2JZ-PS-Hose-MK3-MK4-SC300-p/dm11.htm). The only bad thing I've read about it is that steering gets alot stiffer at low speeds.

      Yes I've read that too about the DM hose. Also, the washer on that setup can get leaky if not centered right.

      They said to center the washer the best I can but someone on clublexus said that they super glued it in the center. As for the hoses I put the wrong part numbers.
