How to fix a whiny power steering pump on a Lexus SC300/400 from 92-00.
Tools needed are:
Turkey Baster
Assorted rubber tubing
Jug/catch pan
Dex/Merc 3 ATF
I like to ramble a lot, so sorry for that.
Don't blame the car for being nasty. It's the slobs driving it.
Whine is air. Keep jacked up, turn left right. Whine goes away. Then check level for loss of fluid. Keep reservoir full. Never get air. Hoses do leak and level too low you get air again

Nice, clear visuals (though, I agree, get a tripod to make your life easier haha ; ) and good commentary - I learned alot from this (I'm a newbie mechanic and you are obviously quite experienced. I have a 95 sc400 - was lucky to find one in beautiful condition a few years back, now it has 160K km (100K miles) on it and I am determined to keep this beaut running and to do it myself. I don't have much experience wrenching so this type of video is super helpful - just want to let you know that you are making a big difference to another SC owner. My SC developed a PS whine while on a road trip this summer - filled the PS fluid and it vanished. But a couple of days ago it was whining like crazy - checked the PS reservoir and it was low...I obviously have a leak. Now heading out to the garage to figure out if my pump is leaking fluid onto my alternator - sure hope not. Thanks again - keep the SC videos coming. Specifically I need to do a valve cover gasket replace this winter so if you have to do one, it would be great if you could shoot some vid. :)
Thank you so much, friend. I'd recommend trying trying Lucas Oil Power Steering Stop Leak. Normally I don't buy into that stuff, but I've used it on my Pontiac Montana and it worked great. As for the valve cover gasket, I just last year completely rebuilt my engine last year to prepare it for a supercharger, so I won't be pulling it apart anytime soon.
Thanks for the advice. Most of the forums I read about SCs are 10+ years old so it's nice to find someone still working on an SC! Man, I feel barely equipped to tackle this PS problem so an engine rebuild sounds freaking intense to me haha. Respect! Here are the results of my inspection of the PS system so far: it is dry around my reservoir so I think I'm all good there. I tried to find fluid around / beneath the pump but I couldn't (not sure if I'm checking exactly the right spot). I topped up the ATF and took it for a 15 minute drive to see if the whine would disappear again. I turned the steering hard left to right and back a few times during the drive. The whine decreased alot but when I got back the fluid level was barely on the dipstick so my leak might be bad. Again, couldn't find alot of fluid around the pump or reservoir so I guess my next step is to takek the shroud off the bottom of the car and inspect to find where all that PS fluid is leaking from. It is 0 degrees Celsius (32F) in my garage so it is taking a while to muster the courage. I guess it could be leaking from the valves or o-rings lower down, in the rack and pinion components. Anyhow, it seems like a leak this significant might not be fixed by a Stop Leak product, am I wrong ? If it seems like I'm totally on the wrong track please let me know. Thanks!
Very informative video. My 92 SC300 sounds exactly the same way and whines loud, pretty sure the pump is going out it has a bad leak along with the power steering pressure hose. I have a new power steering pump I ordered at autozone by aae (atlantic) and comes with reservoir also got 2 bottles of ATF dex merc 3. I found a used 97 hose with no leaks since the after market ones range from 400-600 online for aftermarket or oem. Do you know if a 97 hose will fit in a 92? It has all sensors or will I need the old sensors? I also ordered the drift motion hose as a back up but I heard the steering tightens up a lot without the sensors.
How much ATF did you end up using to cycle out the old fluid? Gauging how much I need to buy.

There is a screen at bottom of rack. In my old BMW there was a ceramic filter at bottom of reservoir. No mention of it in shop manual. Changing it with new one fixed it.
Whine is usually air. But air can be via a leaking seal (broken vacuum) OR via air bubbles entrained in the fluid. Aka FOAMING. Old, beat-up fluid foams very easily.
Answer: use the best DexIII on the planet....Redline D4 ATF, with a bottle of Lubegard Power Steering Protectant. The Redline is Ester-based and doesn't thin-out like basically every other ATF fluid. BUT, it's also superb when it's below 0F.

I recently got a 92 sc400 and did a lot of research it has the common problem I heard about a power steering fluid leak and that same whiny noise. Im assuming I need to replace some hoses and seals considering it's an old car.

Im in the same boat as you were in during this video with my SC400 and I tried the same solution in this video and it did not fix it.
Seeing as this was so many years ago, I was wondering if you could share any more wisdom on this problem and any potential solutions it could be.
If completely replacing the fluid didn't fix it, the pump itself is probably bad. They're easy to replace, but the pump itself is not cheap.
Did this solution work long term? I read other comments saying you sold it but I'm wondering if this was a solid solution long term!

Hey Cole, got a question for you. I have a 98 SC300 with 38K miles and the power steering fluid has never been replaced and it's black in color; yet, the steering works perfectly. I decided to change/flush it by connecting a hose to the high pressure line and capping its connecting port in the reservoir. I used Castrol PS fluid with GM Dexron spec filling the reservoir each time I started the engine and shut if after 2 seconds. This way, the pump doesn't suck the reservoir dry. Did this several times until the fluid coming out looked like the fluid going in. Unfortunately, I now have a tick tick sound similar to valve knocking noise after 1700 RPMs and the car is pulling to the right quite strongly. What do you think has happened by changing the fluid?

I know this comment is three months old, but;
Although I don't know what could be causing the ticking or the pulling just from changing the fluid, I do know that A LOT of 1UZs get a tick from the tensioner pulley getting lose on the timing belt.
So if there were two people working on this, could one just be pouring the fluid in to the reservoir as the other person turned the wheel whilst running the engine.

I've got a 96 Lexus LS400 that's whining exactly like this right now and I keep having to put power steering fluid in it because it's leaking out. When I turn the wheel I can see it squirting out of that hard line hose. Would anyone happen to know what the name of that hard metal line is that runs to the power steering pump???
Sounds like you're describing the High Pressure Power Steering Hose.
@@bunnystew yeah that's what it was I just knew there was two lines and couldn't figure out the name for each one. But I guess there isn't really a different name for them, there's just a short one and a longer one.
Lol everyone with an SC400 on youtube has a real rumble sound. I have never seen this in real life/person.

Mi Ka at the end of the video he says the whine went away after sitting overnight snd driving the next day
The air just needed time to back into the Rez.
put a flat pan under it and get all those towels out of your way, then clean off the area it hits with spray-on hose-off degreaser.

Roberto Sierra remove the fluid with a turkey baster. Then replace it with ATF transmission fluid is what i heard on another video

@@koryabel6319 I do not, unfortunately. When I moved recently I sold my "Fun" cars. I now have a 93 ES300 that plan to make more vids on!
Old owner added power steering instead of ATF. All I did was use a siphon to pump out the old power steering into a oil pan and then refill it with Dexron VI. Whole process takes about 15 minutes and cost 15 dollars. Turkey baster in my opinion takes unnecessarily longer, & removing the return to pump out the old power steering fluid isn’t necessary.

you should change the title of this video as the whine was not fixed only "quieter". i have the same issue with a pump on a 1uz but your 15 min video didnt help me much...
Watch to the end of the vid. This process completely fixed the issue.
And if doing this and giving it plenty of time to run didn't fix it, your pump is probably broke.
