  • How to replace Lexus GS power steering pump. I dig deep into the engine bay of my 1999 Lexus GS400 to remove a failing power steering pump. All said and done this took me about 3 hours to do but I could do it much faster the second time around after learning removal tips shown in this video.

Just did a 2000 GS400. No need to remove the alternator. A wrench gets in there no problem. Thanks for the vid!

Thanks for making this video. I'm trying to gather all the powering steering lines and hoses for this job. Any details or advise on what all I need?

No problem. Honestly I dug up some old part diagrams on the internet and started googling the part numbers. Ebay is your friend as alot of these parts are no longer carried by Lexus/Toyota.

Question, at about 6:30 what is that piece you took off the original pump, if you can please?
Nevermind, I now know it's the Electronic Variable Steering Assist

    • @NolanMotorsports
      @NolanMotorsports  3 роки тому

Sure. I believe it is a pressure sensor/solenoid.

@@NolanMotorsportsNope, it's an Electronic Variable Steering Assist Solenoid
That is why the steering on that vehicle with struts steers so easily

where did the seals go? my new pump never came with seals unfortunately so i just got a seal kit for it

I would go back to whoever sent you the pump. It should come with a whole packet full of new seals.

at that point you might as well replace the thermostat, alternator while your at it lmao. i have a 1999 ls400 and thinking about doing the pump by myself, any tips?

So I did end up swapping out the alternator but I got another 20k miles on the timing belt etc. So I’ll have a pretty big overhaul coming in the not so distant future

Whatever you do don't replace it with a cardone unit or really any reman, OEM OEM OEM. I just spent 3 hours doing mine cuz the solenoid was stuck on the side, ended up using a giant sledge on the fitting, flushed it properly, no air and on startup there was NO power steering period and the whine when turning is unbearable. NTM the unit tried to bypass the solenoid entirely, which I hated because I wanted the oem functions, such as the steering ecu. I removed that bypass adapter and installed the OEM spring and valve

Great time to do the timing belt. It’s so much easier to do that the Toyota V6’s where the engine is mounted horizontally

Did you have to tune the car after installing the air intake? For some reason mine just feels like it’s pulling air but has no power

For GS400s, for some reason you lose air volume with any airfilter besides stock. Idk why. There's things you can do to improve it. Look up forward momentum

Looks like it's running on green antifreeze which is not the recommended solution. Toyota runs the pink antifreeze fluid.

A while back I did a full system flush when I changed out radiators and switched to the Prestone universal. The Pink Toyota OAT is ok.
