Most concise video on the topic out there! Really good job, thank you. FYI, one does not need to separate the fans from the radiator, they come out as a unit more easily than shown in this video.
Getting ready to tackle mine, was pretty scared about doing it cause itll be my first big project on my car. Will definitely be watching this while i do the job myself. Thanks so much
Hello, this was a very informative video. I just had one thing that I didn't hear or see you do, when you took off the vvti cam gear there are those 5 10mm bolts. If you where to take them off you could see there is a o ring that is notorious to get dry and start leaking. The dealer will not sell you the o ring but will sell you a new gear with a new o ring in it. There are aftermarket shops that sell that o ring and way cheaper then getting the gear. Just wanted to say because thats what I had to do and I had oil all over the engine bay like this is300 did.
One thing to mention. The VVTi gear on the intake cam has an o-ring inside of it that when dried out and cracked causes the sprocket to leak oil inside the timing cover. A lot of people overlook it and assume its cam seals or the front main crank seal. Your options are to replace the sprocket or rebuild it. Toyota doesn't want you to rebuild it and therfore doesn't have a rebuild procedure in the service manual but there are how to videos on the subject and the seal can be sourced from the aftermarket.
Absolutely. This is a great point. About 1 month ago, we diagnosed a car with the exact issue you're point out. If anyone reads this, dont be fooled by this. You can actually run the engine with the cover off and see if it flings the oil out.
11:45 Not sure if anyone pointed this out, but make sure to replace an o-ring within the VVTi gear set - 79mm x 2mm. A lot of people forget about it, until it starts leaking and dripping oil on the timing belt.
nice video man, another way to do cam and main seal is get some small screws and screw them into the seal a little bit. gives you something to grab on and pull the seal out so less chance of damaging stuff
Hello, I appreciate you uploading this video. It will help me a lot when I do this on my IS300. Im an apprentice at Hyundai and have replaced many engines that have timing chains. Ive never done a timing belt or camshaft + crankshaft seals. After watching this I have the confidence to tackle this job. Thanks!!
Great video but using the dots on the cam gear is not TDC on #1. You need to use the hash mark on the cams, I believe it’s roughly 30 degrees apart from the white dot. The balancer actually has 2 white lines on it, if you line up with the hash mark you’ll see the second white line on the balancer line up. An easy way to tell on a 2J is at TDC for #1 the key ways will be at the 12 o’clock position and the cams will have the dowel pins at 12 o’clock. Great video tho. Very informative!!
Great video! You are able to break that crankshaft bolt using the accessory belt. You wedge the belt on itself and gives you enough tension to use a 3/4 ratchet to get at it.
Alot of those Lexus mechanics only work on the newer models and have little experience working that 2jz engine...unless you insist on an experienced mechanic at the dealership they will throw anybody at it...since it's not a new model Lexus dealerships don't care about the older models
I got a question on the motor being on top dead center, my crank pulley has a white line and a groove line. I was told top dead center is when the groove lines are aligned not the white lines
You can see the white mark is on 0 and I show the cams inline with the marks. Those will not lie. Just verify those all match no matter what and you'll be fine.
I’d like to see your timing marks clear because I’m doing a time in belt job on my Lexus GS 300 and my time in Marks not clear so if you can can you get back to me with
When you put the cam gears back on it looked to me like you lined the “dot” up with the “hump” correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t you supposed to line the “dash marks” up with the “humps” rather than the “dots”???
What did you do to get the timing sprocket on the crankshaft? Mine is difficult to get back on. I’ve double checked any thing that’s in the way and have aligned the sprocket to clear the keyed parts of the crank.
whats good, do i need a timing belt cover gasket? im purchasing new valve covers gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, 3 o ring gaskets, the timing belt kit Water Pump, Timing Belt, Tensioner, Pulley, Gaskets from aisin. what else do i need boss?
@@Beacon_Offroad Ok so you recommend an impact to put the crank bolt back on? As long as the timing belt is on, the engine won't move? Also, how do you know you're not over torquing it with the impact? Is it on it's highest, medium, or low setting? Or are you using a torque stick?
The belt retaining collar behind the timin belt lower cover. Does that float around? I know on the 2jzgte engine there are four open slots that fit through that one tab on the crank. And the curved side faces out and flat side faces the belt. With the lower cover on, that metal retaining collar freely spins and doesn’t seat in the protruding metal tab off the crank is that right? Thank you and amazing job on the video instructions!! 👏👏
bro seriously. I just did this the other day and noticed this immediately. As long as he used the right mark on the crankshaft pulley with those white dots he should be okay
The white mark on the crank goes in the Zero position and the cam pulleys go to the Lines , not the circles. The yellow line on the crank goes to the circles.
I replaced the cam seals and replaced vvti gear with oem vvti gear and now my engine does not run. I removed gears on the long dash marks instead of the dot marks on the cam gears. is that the problem?
I didn’t see you remove or install the crank timing belt plate.. not the guide but the plate you remove right before removing the crank timing pulley..
Hey broni didn't my timing belt and aligned the gears to the line not the dots and now the car has trouble starting but when it does it dies out and motor shakes while it's on before dying
you did the right thing by aligning the lines and not the dots on the cams and the timing gear down below, if its conking out something else must be wrong.. double check those marks (i know alot of work to do) rotate the engine about two times and verify alignment, then if that all checks out its something else... maf, spark plug wires maybe put wrong, fuel, or something isnt plugged in (sensor) etc... but if the lines on the timing are not right it will run bad... the toyota shop manual says its the lines... also on the harmonic balancer you dont use the first line at 0 deg... its the second line the (line to the left) that you put at 0 deg... it also says only to rotate the engine "clockwise", this video used the first line which is not how the manual says to do it.. if so the engine will be 30 deg off on the timing.. peace
while trying to take vvti cam gear off my wrench sliipped and the ccam spun a few rounds.. should i be concerned or can i just put it back to tdc and be ok?
@@Beacon_Offroad what happens if the crank and cams both out of time? can I just set the crank in time and the cams at tdc then install the belt? Or am I screwed
