  • There are probably lots of different ways on how to paint grass! In this video I demonstrate on how I paint it, from the under painting to individual blades!
    I am almost finished with the painting, which I most likely title "Vatolakkos Fields V." I figured it would of been a great idea to show how I did the grass! This one is for the grass in the middle and distance! Stay tuned for a close up demo too!
    As I mention in the video, it is important to know there are many different types of grass out there. There is the perfectly cut kind and then there is the wild ones! Also lighting and time of the year will make an impact on the appearance too! The grass I do a demonstration on is lush green wild grass in the spring during overcast weather!
    Brushes I favor to use are the liner style type. The painting is small at 11 by 14 inches so I use 18/0 and 10/0 liners. I also use a few round brushes and flat ones too... again on the small side!
    As for greens.. I make my own for the most part. I favor cobalt & cerulean blue and cadmium yellow mixtures. I do use viridian too particularly for cool highlights with a white and darks with alizarin crimson!
    Questions? Let me know! And thanks for watching!!
    The title of the beats used for the video are
    "Enchanted Forest"
    "In a Rush"
    "Find Me"

      Thank you for the input and the music is something I have been highly debating lately due to some negative comments, some constructive and some flat out negative... you can tell the difference based on if I leave a heart behind! Anyhow going forward I definitely have to consider this feedback regardless! Thanks for the comment and sub! A hint for future videos that I have planned are a painting details in the distance and a trees, bark, and branches video in store... but I have a timelapse I have to finish first!

    Hi Bob, I’m a new viewer in search of artists who love detail like myself. I am about to start a large painting ( 24 x 36 ) which will contain a field of grass. The field will have distance but will also be closer to the viewer and contain sharper meadow flowers. Your demonstration of layers of various greens and browns as the foundation work is invaluable to make my painting believable. Thank you for sharing your techniques.

      I appreciate that! I will probably do more videos on grass as there are various types and ways to paint them! But definitely building up layers is the best way!

    Nice traditional landscape painting. My focus of interest is on catching a special interest of color vibration and rhytms …. Like a composition of music - but always interesting to see details of other artists choices - 🎵🍀🎶💚

      This is definitely one of the most interesting comments as I regard music and art to be very related! I would of been a musician if it wasn't for painting! The we were see color and brushwork is the equivalent of how a musician can hear and identify notes and a composition! And there have been songs, albums that influence some of pieces in terms of mood, color, subject matter, etc. So I totally get your interest in color vibration and rhythm. That is why I look back at impressionist and pay close attention to the way brushstrokes of color are laid next to each other! So thank you for this comment as it reassures me more of the relationship between music and art!

      Thanks for the comment! I like giving people an idea of what I am using so they have a better idea of how I am interpreting it! I extensively overlayed photos in my most recent video with sheep, scene for scene. As for photography, I was never a fan of photos that look unrealistic... even if they were real with or without filters! Yes my camera was not expensive as it is a Canon T6i and I am not a expert at photography... but I try! I took about 12 photos of this log in case you are wondering an had a hard time between the one I used and the one slightly a bit lower eye level! But the goal is ultimately reference photos I can work with, not a great photo, even if it turns out good!

    I just found you tonight. I watched this video because I have already painted grass in the past and I did not have a video to help me. I looked at lots of examples though. Including many photos of grass. My particular problem was that the person had asked for grass that was long and blowing in the wind. This was particularly challenging. I also looked at many of the greats such as Monet and Van Gogh to see how they did it. Ultimately I was fairly satisfied with the result. I did do the underpainting just like you did, of dark and darker first. Then I built up for layers and layers of color. I added wild flowers because the actual fields in Wisconsin all have wild flowers in them. I would love to see you devote a video or two to close ups of old pieces of wood like the one in this painting and just talk about the technique you use for that. My next tough project is going to be a cave and the cave walls and rocky ground in the foreground of the cave. I would love to add an old piece of wood to the cave foreground. It would be awesome to see your thoughts on that! Thank you for sharing your techniques. I am learning to paint from videos and also praying a lot. All of my paintings have people in them as well. It's odd, but being a seamstress for many years has helped me to paint clothing so much. It helps a lot to know about drape and how stiffer material, like denim, lays different than a t shirt. Thanks again Carol

    • @notyourtypicalpainter
      @notyourtypicalpainter  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for the extremely length comment and I did read it! I am happy my video was helpful! Not sure if you will believe this but Van Gogh and Monet are an influence to me, particularly in color! More so on Van Gogh as he was a magician in the way he painted bold strokes of color next to each other! The color contrast in that technique is something I try to mimic sometimes on a smaller scale with smaller brush strokes. I do have a few projects line up but they are going to be on the simple side as the current little painting is stressing me. I have the reference photo in my community tab if you want to see what I am working on! So I am going to go more simple next to take a break and do a few simple landscapes with more grass but wild red poppy flowers. If I were to do a cave painting it would have to be something I shot myself when it comes to the photo... its one of my rules I follow. But I painted rock texture in my earlier videos featuring a cat a rocky mountain. As for clothing, being a seamstress gives you an advantage to understanding the different fabrics. When painting textures I like to think of it this way.... make the view visually feel the texture, whether it is velvet, silk or something rough like concrete or rocky terrain. If you have a reference photo of the cave painting you are about to do I am more than willing to take a look and give you my insight how I would tackle it! See if you can post it in my community tab!

    • @notyourtypicalpainter
      @notyourtypicalpainter  Рік тому

      The whole blur/soft edge technique can be used in objects in the foreground, particularly say if you want to create a sense of volume you would soften certain edges, particularly those in the dark shadows! This comes in handy with portraiture where the figure/head does not have much depth but you must create a sense of it!

    • @notyourtypicalpainter
      @notyourtypicalpainter  10 місяців тому

      Thanks for asking! For the under painting and big bodies of color, flats or larger rounds. I use those bigger ones to also to gently soften/blur as well! For repetitive grass blades, liner brushes from 1, 10/0 and even 18/0. For details or specific blades I use tiny rounds, such as 3/0 and 10/0. I recommend Princeton Velvetouch for the tiny brushes as they are reasonably priced, last a while before losing their points and have tiny handles allowing you to get close to the canvas!

    Sorry, I couldn't get through this video due to being nuts by the noise in the background. (I presume it's someone's idea of music.) Why do UA-camrs do this?

    • @notyourtypicalpainter
      @notyourtypicalpainter  10 місяців тому +1

      I have taken note on the 'background noise' from other comments. Everything from not including it to just lowering the volume. My equipment improved since and I have a better mic at isolating background noise, like cars, loud neighbors, dogs, etc. 'Someone's idea of music' helps with those issues... even with better equipment. But mainly I wanted also a more upbeat video! You are entitled to your opinion in the end and I always take criticism, regardless if it is constructive or rude, to heart.... but I will always know I will not be able to satisfy everyone!

    • @pringlel
      @pringlel 10 місяців тому

      I certainly wasn't intending to be rude. The thing is that I am constantly mystified why people feel the need to put awful background 'music' behind their videos. You say that 'a more upbeat video' might be the result. Surely the intellectual content of what you are doing is the only thing that matters. If that isn't good enough then any amount of 'music' won't help it. For what it's worth, the content I did watch was well up to scratch.@@notyourtypicalpainter 😄

    • @notyourtypicalpainter
      @notyourtypicalpainter  10 місяців тому +1

      @@pringlel Rude? Sorry but I survived some of the most brutal criticisms in the past back at art school with Chuck Close's old roommate! Lets just leave it as your comment came across as something to take note of when choosing background music and factoring not to have it as well! I look at it this way, if the video fails, find out why! And if it succeeds, find out why as well! This one seems to be more popular so I should take note what worked.... and it has 'someone's idea of music'... that a good one really! But I am more critical on myself than you can imagine and I hear or read everything as constructive, even if it is pretty rude! You rude? Nah! So thanks for the comment!
