@notyourtypicalpainter Very informative! I am new to oils, and excited to learn the best techniques. This tutorial helped me understand the process so much better than I did before and you made me lol when you showed how loud the sanding was when you left it at full volume 😅 Great video! My goal is to teach my kids to oil paint as we've only used acrylics together. This will help so much!
@thefamilyfruitforest @thefamilyfruitforest thanks i try to be funny! Anyhow about paints, they both have their pros and cons... sometimes I wish oils behaved like acrylics so I can quickly build a section up and at other times acrylics like oils to do gradual color blends and dry brushing! I am curious with their experience in acrylics if they will have moments that they wish it wasn't oil or ultimately enjoy what they can do that was limited with acrylics!
Hi +Not your typical painter Your video showed up in my feed and I wanted to check out a different painter, I like your poppy painting your very talented in painting realism. I'm extremely new to oil painting but I have been told how to gesso before from a woman who done her arts degree and most of your method is correct except you may find it helpful to apply it in the middle of the canvas first then move it out to the sides in a x method applying it fast still crisscrossing, because if you apply it on a corner first that corner will dry before the rest and it tighten up creating an uneven tightening of the canvas but if you apply it in the middle the center tightens first when drying. I find myself accidentally painting it on like you whilst in the middle of applying it forgetting about it and day dreaming, it's hard to remember when your used to the incorrect method.
I agree if it was a raw canvas and absorbing the gesso 100%! But this was a store bought canvas and was just I applied more coats! Therefore it did not matter since it was tight because it was gessoed already! Plus if it is a raw canvas, the first coat would also have been watered down a bit to tighten and penetrate the fabric of the canvas!
That is a good question! It was not much of a concern for me because the canvas was brand new straight out of shrink wrap! I did dust it by hand and by gently hitting the canvas on it side while sanding between coats to clear it! I see running water from a sprayer could work if it is a lot of debris, but you will have to wait for it to dry to apply gesso! Overall it was not much of a concern but should be ONLY if it there is a lot where it can affect the surface area in a negative area! But honestly hairs from brushes and other little debris sometimes are unavoidable while painting, especially if you do work outdoor during windy days! In a way those imperfections come with the territory of a hand made piece of art!
I have sensory issues, not your problem, however I cant make heads nor tails of this video because of music during talking. Just a heads up for people like me whom want the info, but its not available in this case. Sorry if it sounds like a complaint, its just a suggestion.
Thank you for the suggestion! I take criticism to heart whether it is harsh or actually constructive such as yours! Over time this has been something mentioned to me before and I came to the conclusion I cannot satisfy everyone with certain decisions! I am trying to make it a tad bit entertaining and trying to grab peoples attention because sometimes they watch for a few seconds and then click away from your video and the 'mighty UA-cam algorithm' will shoot your post down and not recommend it! I have lowered the volume 2 times during the editing process to make it barely there. I also have been creating 2 cuts of the same video recently, one with music and one without, kind of like an insurance policy! Should I upload the non music ones with links to them in case people want narration only?
I can't listen to a tutorial with background "music" either. It's too exhausting to try to listen to the teacher while simultaneously trying to tune out the background noise. I mute it and turn on the closed caption or just skip the whole video completely.
@@AFAskygoddess thank you for the feedback, I have been considering dropping the music but one reason I find it hard to do is because of background noise such as neighbors and so on. Music hides it a bit! I have lowered the volume dramatically vs older videos! At the same time I know I can't please everyone!
Thanks so much for this video!
@@thefamilyfruitforest you are very welcome! Thank you for the comment that you liked it!

How did you get canvas clean and free of debris before applying gesso?

I am entertained by the information, I don't need to have more noise. Ambient sounds are magnificent!@@notyourtypicalpainter
