- My go to technique I have for painting realistic grass, leaves, and foliage in both acrylics and oils.
In this video I show you how to paint the sagebrush and how to paint the grass in this landscape painting. I show you how to layer the colors to build up to the end result we are always looking for in our realistic art.

If you have any questions about something I covered or maybe something I didn't cover in this painting tutorial I am more than happy to answer.
Chuck Black is an artist currently residing near Bozeman, MT. I work primarily in acrylics and oils on canvas. I paint landscapes, wildlife, and anything to do with outdoor living or Mother Nature. My work simply reflects my love for the outdoors.
Wow ! I'm 75 and never expect to get anywhere close to you. It's like I'm watching an old Master in real time. God really gifted you young man. More than anything let him know you appreciate your gift. Kerry Lyons
When you started adding the oils and explained it so beautifully I got a tear in my eye. I've only recently discovered my passion for painting and it has opened a whole new emotional world to me. Your work is so inspirational.
This was VERY informative... I was hoping for a short-cut, but this level of detail demands it. Oil over acrylic is genius too! I will be patient and stay vigilant... thank you SO much!
"There really is no short cut...." So true! I wish I'd had this video two weeks ago. I just finished a painting last week with tons of desert grass in the foreground, and after fumbling around trying different short cuts (I'm new to painting), that was my conclusion, too...one blade at a time to get the look I wanted. I like the tip of finishing with oils--interesting idea.
It's the only way to do it! Thanks and it's definitely worth a try in my opinion. You should give oils a go one time and see how you like it
Chuck, I look through tons of artist on youtube that are seasoned professionals. And none of them have anything on your young self. You are a gifted artist with your own techniques and colors. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
For a disorganized person like me it was extremely helpful to watch and listen to the process of ground to foliage cover. I fill like I just started painting again! Thanks Chuck
I can't believe you brought that Deer to Life. It looks as if you took a Picture. He looks so so real. Stunning work. Thank You for Sharing.
OMG!!! That is exactly what i needed. I recently painted a pheasant and an Elk and I really struggle with grass and weeds and ground. This helped me so much, I cant wait to start my next painting!!! Thank you Chuck your the man!!!
Thank you so much for your time and patience in allowing us to view you as a master of your canvas.
Your commentary is so helpful! I learn so much every time I watch your videos - especially the golden nuggets like your explanation for why you switch to oils. I can see how the thinness of the lines you get from it is super helpful. Your paintings are really beautiful! That hillside is lovely ...
Magnificent, CB! And I LOVE this condensed version of the tutorial. I really appreciate the time, skill and effort you put into these videos. Please, keep them coming.
Wow! The entire painting is so realistic you can hear the hooves of the deer crunch on the ground, smell the grasses and sagebrush and breath the crisp air. Your more recent paintings look like you've found a whole new cache of inspiration, and it has exploded onto the canvasses. This one is absolutely gorgeous! How long, in real time, did it take to paint the foliage and grasses? I'd love to watch this one, in real time.
Love to hear that! I've been feeling better about my recent paintings as well so it's nice to have the reassurance. I think it was somewhere between five and six hours to do the grass area. It's just much harder for me to share these larger paintings in real time. Thanks Mark!
Beautiful!
Wow, this was so helpful, I wish one day I could be as good as you. Thank u for taking the time to make these videos. Honestly very helpful
Was looking for this question, because I wanted to know the same thing :D thank you
Your tutorials are stellar. Concise and informative. You've helped me immensely with my painting. Thank you, and keep the tutorials coming, please!
P.S.- how do you render your backgrounds so that they appear somewhat blurred? Do you have a tutorial for this technique?
Thanks I appreciate it. That's a fantastic question as I was thinking about how I was so impressed with being able to do that as well. It's really quite easy and I will try to incorporate that in a future video. I just used some round shaped brushes and Blended it all using small circular motions. The round blender brush did wonders for this
Love this peaceful scenery...so beautiful.
Wow, you have the patience of a saint! Very inspirational. Thank you. The country you live in and paint is gorgeous. I live in Wyoming and have whole life (63). I absolutely love the countryside here. I googled "how to paint sagebrush" and this video was first. You are so right to put the kind of detail in the painting that you did. It makes a huge difference. I need to look at it as a challenge...and a challenge it will be...because I don't come by patience naturally. Thanks again.
VERY GOOD!!!!! SIMPLE AND UNDERSTANDABLE .....
So professional, it looks like a photo! You make it so easy! I have been accused many times for not being “messy, streaky, brush marks enough, be sloppy, not careful or meticulous! You’ve helped me so much! Thank you!
Like isn’t enough. I LOVE this video. You’ve brought back pointillist, with a new, 20th century name. This is the kind of detail that really interests me. Thank you for sharing! You’re just getting better and better and are really an inspiration to your viewers!
beautiful rendering of foliage
I really like this new video format! Really cool seeing the painting up close during the process.
Wow, looks great at the end. Really useful idea to finish with oil painting, thanks for sharing.
I think your the best acrylic teacher. These days people tend to naturally go towards oil. Given that it probably is more vibrant etc but I prefer acrylics because it dries quick meaning I don't have to spend months on it because it dries out too slow .
Such a beautiful piece. Amazing what the small foreground details can do to a painting. Thank you for sharing
Wow your paintings look like photos!!!
That's beautiful Chuck.
Wow!! Beautiful!! Thanks for sharing your skill..
You are just incredible to watch, it makes me smile. Beautiful work and really kind of you to show us how at no cost ❤️
Words cant describe the beauty of your paintings, you are a true artist 😍
Great work, Chuck. Its a lot of work to paint each blade of grass, but the net effect is well worth the effort. Outstanding!
Thanks so much for sharing your tips for painting grass. I love seeing you build up the density, ending up with a scrubby hillock that is very believable!
This really helped me, thank you so much! I'm in my second year of art school and I wish my teachers showed us how to paint like this...
hi Chuck just to say i admired your amazing talent and patience you have for all the details on your painting and i thank you very much for sharing ( grass and foliage ) i am your french fan from Québec, Canada ;
Thanks always, Guy!
Outstanding and award winning!
You are truly masterful at this craft. Thank you for sharing your expertise 🙏
Grass is very tedious , I'm glad someone shared the reality of each stroke, some blocking in values first helps set the ground work, this is very good details
Good job!! Chuck, i like how you explain everthing congrats!! God blees you..
An old woman showed me years ago her little trick for steading your hand so your not holding it in the air for hours at a time a little stability... so she had a small thin broom handle about 3, 4 foot long. Rest it between your legs or on a leg waist area , the top leand on the top of the esal . Resting the side of your hand holding the brush other hand holding the top of the stick and moving it side to side as you paint.. wanted to share this. Ot really helps... love the grass.. takes time, but the detail more stunning and real is worth the time..nice
great art watching this helped me with my elk painting besty
Wonderful tutorial!!! Amazing grasses & foliage!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I learned so much in such a short time.
Your dedication to detail makes your paintings phenomenal. Thank you for sharing your skills and techniques. I love watching your tutorials. I have learned so much from you. I am feeling a little more confident with scenery paintings. Again, Thank you.
Love to hear that, Michelle. Thank you for following and for your kind words. You are most welcome
Is there a tutorial on the entire painting? The deer is stunning. I really like how the background (mountains and sky) reflect natural color-not the punched up, cartoonish color seen on so many other UA-cam channels. This is masterful.
Im a novice acrylic painter and couldnt understand why I couldnt get the brightness, now I know! Oil scare me, I think I'll research how to start. Thanks for posting, you are awesome.
A very beautiful painting. All your paintings are beautiful.Thanks.
Very realistic effect. Will try in my next Landscape!
This was really helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your amazing talent Chuck! Love your style !
Thank you Geri! You are welcome
C'est très jolie l'herbe, le sol !
Im working a big horn sheep on the side of a cliff. Your methods have helped me make some decisions on going further into detail on fur and foliage. thanks for sharing ! Wonderful work you do, lovely
Chuck, it's always wonderfull painting. Lot of details of how to paint wild grass.
Thank you
The French small artist.
Mind blowing!!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! This is so real!
Stay blessed!!! 🙏🙏🙏
So cool!
This was so helpful! I live in Boise Id and ride my horse in the desert. I’ve taken a tons of pics because I want to paint sage brush... thanks for the clear instructions!
This is the tutorial I want to it. It’s really helps. Thank you for great tutorial.
Beautiful brilliant painting!!! Ur kind to explain details so generously, great help, thank u soo much
beautifully !!
Awesome talent Chuck! Love watching you paint!
Thanks Linda
Beautifully done!
the way i always make foreground details pop in the landscape is to seal off a part of the canvas with gloss medium varnish, it creates a barrier layer you can paint over.....of course this is for if you can to paint in acrylics all the way through.
My method is actually similar to this. So I do most of the work in acrylics and then spray it with a gloss spray. Then I paint oil over the top to make it pop and if I need to fix something I just use paint thinner and wipe it off and start over. Great minds think alike!
Wonderful, I just want to pet that deer, looks so realistic! Amazing piece!💕🇨🇦
I just found your channel. I LOVE your paintings, how you paint, and your detailed instructions. I'm learning a lot. Thank you.
Somewhere along the line, painting leaves and blades of grass stopped being something of a chore for me and became a sort of zen activity that helped me control my anxiety.
Thank you...very informative, didn’t know that you could oil on top of acrylic. And the music that you use is lovely.
You are an incredible Artist!! Thank you for sharing so much great information, it is so helpful!
I’m just starting to paint wildlife and this video is amazing. It will really help me improve my paintings. Thanks so much for making this.
Great painting! A test of patience really... I wish I could do that..
Thank you for covering why you used oil for the finishing, problem was everybody almost as far as I have seen uses that techniques but never know why! I thrived a lot with keeping the colors within the brush for a line, but they always seem to fade away a lot sooner that I intent to paint. I will use the same technique, first time deciding to buy oil color! Again, thank you for your time and effort. Good luck with your next works.
This is so so useful....thanks a lottttt........
Thanks for showing me how easy grass can be
Not a problem, thanks so much!
Just absolutely beautiful work thanks for sharing!!!!
Thanks for this great demo! So helpful to see your process in developing that beautiful foreground.
Beautiful
Magnificent piece of art. I loved the video and the technique.
Another excellent video....
Another great lesson! Thank You
Your detail is amazing! Love to watch you paint!
Thank you :) Im learning so much from you and using many of your techniques in my digital paintings. Even with custom brushes in Photoshop, the principle is the same - to get it just right, you need to put in the work and do individual details.
dude you've come such a long way. inspiring as always, thanks for the video.
Wow 😲
Your art is just mind blowing... I absolutely love everything you do. Thank you for sharing your process, it’s really helpful and inspiring to watch other artists create. Big fan over here 👍🏻👍🏻
Really appreciate that, David! Thanks for the follow and you are welcome!
Lovely painting. The effect of the background is awesome.
love your Technic and patience!! "Keep going", inspired me to try painting again. Thanks!!!!! I'm working on Calico Rocks in the Ozark National Park.
There's no way around it for such great detail.
Amazing!
Remarkable work
U are the best , great technique , foliage is actually very difficult to make, seems easy now
So helpful Chuck! My question is : When you paint very fine lines with oils, do you thin your paint with Liquin or turps? and what number and type of brush do you use? I have tried even a liner brush but still get too thick a line. Thanks.
Very meditative painting style just loosing track of time being present in the small details like a kind of soft rhythms. Amazing effect to follow your painting process
thanks Chuck.. ur tutorials are always very helpful😍
I love your painting.It’s wonderful!!!!!!
I so appreciate this video. I struggle so much with being willing to do the detail needed to make my foreground random like this. Chuck Black Repeat lesson. " There is really no shortcut". Sigh.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you.
I swear I saw that deer move!! Lol lol. Awesome!! Thank you so much..
Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing!
Nice to see your technique, will be useful once I get to painting foliage on my current painting.
That is so beautiful !!!
I like to see how you do the detail work on projects. Thank you.
Beautiful beautiful hope I can accomplish this technique. Nice work.
I fell asleep watching this..will have to watch all over again😌
Excelent tutorial Chuck ! Thanks alot
