I liked Tyranth's descriptions of how the blade performed.
And it was neat to see Shad's comments on his own performance about striking too far down on the blade, or edge alignment.
The sword is lovely and it was wonderful to see it's performance.
(Swords quake in existential dread when they see Shad and Tyranth in full protective gear)

That wasn't full protective gear though. No gloves, which that skinny handle was likely intended for. Glove users have a better grip on a thin handle.

the handle feels skinny because you're bare handed. But people wore thick gloves when doing things like riding horses and handling swords, the glove gives a lot of material mass in between your hand and the handle which makes up for the difference between that handle and for example a common hammer. You should get some thick gardening gloves or something and try it out.

    • @saphyrepyre
      @saphyrepyre 19 днів тому +4

@@saphyrepyre For a long time ,, most of my life, I never wore work gloves even when recommended or required. I also spent a period of time wondering why people always would want skinny handles on things I was like "wtf this feels whacky" ,, but just eventually I figured out that beefy gloves really change what the right shape of handle is for the best grip.

Its a really well built sword I dont really want.
1080 steel is great. Tougher than the 1095 derivitive steels like t10 but still can have a good edge. 1060 for sure isnt used often on fine short kitchen blades.
Pummel is great would do more on a longer handle
Its all that on a short handed sword that might look better plain.
I can find a gold and black katana that claims to be T10 at $40.
Looks better even if it does look a tiny bit cheap.
Its great materials on a weak design with this. You got to remember people are bigger than before on average and a sword a swords person wants is more than the average back then unless they want to carry a shield too. Thae harbor freight survival knife sure doesnt have a thin handle. The low standard is pretty high.
Steel is the main plus here. Needs to be 25% longer and 2.5x more handle at least

I appreciate the review. Two minor quibbles:
First: Wear hand protection! It's not just a good idea for safety while testing swords to destruction, but is also good practice so you're always exercising with the sword while wearing the kind of gear you would generally wear while doing other combat activities.
Secondly: You habitually rotate your torso too far, reaching forward past your off hand. That's a particularly bad habit when fighting sword and shield. It suggests that you're in the habit of reaching a bit too far with your attacks. You can get away with that when the style you practice uses lighter weapons, but with more substantial weapons, you need to train yourself to fight in a bit tighter with your opponent.

It's definitely a pretty sword and the blade seems nice but that hilt seems disproportionate with the durability of the blade. If that section had been put together a bit better I think it would be a really good sword in general. Functional enough to use, tough enough to take a bit of punishment, and nice to look at. It just needs tweaking in the way the hilt is put together.
