Totally! When Akron's non-profit arthouse theater The Nightlight opened a few years ago, they chose "Only Lovers Left Alive" as their first feature. It was super cool to finally see Jim's movies on the big screen in his (and our) hometown!
That's great! I didn't know he was Ohio native. The way the soundtrack "Only Lovers Left Alive" not only sounds incredible but it adds so much depth to the story. I love the idea of a composer living for hundreds of years, now making modern music with fuzz pedals!
It's what The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly might have sounded like if Ennio Morricone booked studio time with Steve Albini and hired Sunn O))) as session musicians. Perfect description. Love it. Love Jim's movies(Dead Man!!!) and SQURL is right up there with any drone/doom band around. What an amazing talent.
I agree, I really wanna see these guy's live now! I'm a huge post fan, these guys just from this video give me huge post rock vibes, especially with the film behind them playing
Such a great episode. Just another proof that you don’t necessarily need an Orchestra to create stunning soundscapes for movies. Thanks EQD for this inspiring insight!
It's interesting how Jarmusch described putting sound "under" the images. I've always sort of thought about it the other way around, that the music is layered on top of the image.
In film editing, both in the old flatbed days and now also in digital editors, standard practice is to have the music usually reside in the bottom track of the audio master mix. Your point about the different mindset is still valid, but his use of that word may just be an artifact of of his filmmaking experience.
We all love to see it. Your friends, our fiends, their pedals, sounds, your pedals... sounds. Our pedals, - ... our sounds. Avalanche run id probably the best delay nd reverb on the market if you ask me, especially when you take into account exp. control.
EarthQuakerDevices my pleasure... Meshes of the Afternoon by Maya Deren who was a very interesting surrealist filmmaker in the 30s /40s would blend beautifully with similar sound composition her other films are also fascinating... she was a performer too and is in most of her films
Loved watching this! One of my favorite filmmakers. Sorry for a nerdy pedal question: Is that a Boss CS-3 in the 2nd row on the right of Jim's board? Thanks!
I found 2 photos of his board on the band’s Instagram, and I’m leaning towards CS-3. If you skip to 12:30 in this video, you’ll also notice the far right knob label is consistent with where SUSTAIN would be on a CS-3. All the PS pedals have multiple things printed there. I doubt this is a PS-3 because there don’t appear to be multiple outputs. There’s a chance it’s a PS-2, but the word MODE would appear on the far right a little higher up. Correct me if I’m wrong! This is just a guess.
@@EarthQuakerDevices you definitely should, it's a compliment. Not sure how accurate it is now, you've got a darker vibe but there are some aesthetic similarities there.
SQÜRL's soundtrack to his movie, Only Lover's Left Alive is absolutely incredible. Very cool to hear him talk about his gear, thanks!

Jim is a legend. I’m not surprised he’s into EarthQuaker. He came up with all of the best of the 70-80s underground rock’n’rollers.
i still think him getting Boris on soundtrack of his films is the coolest part about him

Down By Law is one of my fav movies of all time.

Jarmusch is a humble master of many things. What a mind. 💚
holy shit jim jarmusch. huge pull.
Fantastic video
Honestly the coolest one you've done so far
thanks for watching!

Sure, if youre into vague descriptions of pedals
Love Jim's movies
Me too! Sometimes I'm convinced Roberto Benigni's vignette in "Night On Earth" is the funniest thing I've ever seen on film.
I think it’s cool how you guys don’t shun when the Artists show pedals that aren’t EQD!
With that said, EQD, makes some of my favorite pedals!!
Thanks, Jake! What can we say? We're gearheads. We like all of it.
Backed! EQD showing real character here instead of petty competition...
Such a great episode. Just another proof that you don’t necessarily need an Orchestra to create stunning soundscapes for movies. Thanks EQD for this inspiring insight!
My favourite film director is a gearhead like me! I should have known after seeing the opening scene in Only Lovers Left Alive...
This is absolutely beautiful........Jim and SQÜRL
thanks for watching!
I saw their Man Ray show last night in Ann Arbor, which was mesmerizing. Catch it if you can.
send us the link pleaaaase
Cool descriptions and demonstrations of using the pedals.
thanks for watching!
Great stuff! My Sea Machine V2 just made me lose sleep, and now I come upstairs to this...mainlining the coffee pot tomorrow, I guess.
Magnificent! I want to see the performance now.
Me too.
This is brilliant. As some who plays alone I love this. I put myself into a trance. Fighting against being derivative.
"I'm not a guitar player, I just happen to have made some of the best movies you'll ever see." xD
"...and I'm a pretty great guitar player."
His music on Only Lovers Left Alive was perfect. Never knew he did music before that.
Love seeing how Critter and Guitari is taking off
Sqürl's got the grooves on, i would love to see this film performance. Magic folding time
They were great! The Man Ray set is one of the most unique musical experiences I've had in a long time.

Dude, I love this. Squrl does some amazing stuff!
So creative and simple, thanx EQD.
thanks for watching!
Great video. Great Pedal Boards. Thanks for putting this up... really enjoyed it.
thanks for watching!
wow ... i have loved this video ... too short
WOW! Had no idea that Jim Jarmusch played guitar. Mad props to him.
He made music for Only Lovers Left Alive and also with Jozef van Wissem!
That's a perfect rig. Thanks for this video!
It really is. Thanks for watching!
YEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! THANKS for posting!!
Thanks for watching, Henry!
Woe! Jarmusch making soundtracks to Man Ray!!!
DAMN! I wish i’d known about this show!
i'm in awe
you shoulda seen it in person! it was unbelievable.
His collaboration with Joseph Van Wissem is awesome too.

Heady...will listen to this score now....
Analog Synth is the greatest invention of the 20th Century.
Hope Corey is recovering okay from being GAZified @ NAMM ;)
he'll survive.
"45 minutes of D minor"... the saddest of all keys
"This one's called 'Lick My Love Pump.'"
Would love to see this
You love to see it.
I've never seen Jimbo so excited.
awesome
Jim Jarmusch .... music for Man Ray.... Perfect match 💜
thanks for watching, Judy!

I Love SQÜRL!
I love this idea ... a local experimental band created their own soundtrack live to Nosferatu. Very cool.
Everyone should create their own soundtrack to everything
BTW - the Transmisser, Avalanche Run, and Acapulco Gold are on my pedal board most of the time.
Tasty great stuff !
thanks!
Is there a live performance of these scores to watch somewhere?
I’d love to watch man ray with this backing - are any of the performances available?
"and I can get a riööö-rriörrr"
Nice
Ahh Jim.
Cool!
thanks for checking it out!
What genre of music he is playing? Please help me find some more this type of music or song.
post rock, experimental, a bit of no wave i guess with a touch of dark ambient
Which pedals are?
What amp was the first guy playing
lord where can I start a band like this
why does iggy call barre chords cheater chords?
If I had to guess, it's because with a barre chord, you can learn one shape and move it all over the neck. And because Iggy Pop is always right.
Loved watching this! One of my favorite filmmakers. Sorry for a nerdy pedal question: Is that a Boss CS-3 in the 2nd row on the right of Jim's board? Thanks!
I think it is a Pitchshifter- Delay, next to a EHX Pitchfactor , an octaver-harmonizer too.

I bet one of those thumbs down is from Joe Bonamassa!
Good.
Supa Puss is so underrated
I didn't hear him say he wouldn't want to be a shredder
down in OHIO, SWAG LIKE OHIO
Coffee and Cigarettes and Pedals
Eqd pedals are like if Wes Anderson made pedals
We'll take it

Dispatch master lol
down by law is strange
!!!!!
avalanche run yo
Uhm, somebody, uhmm, call, uhmm, 911......
All these fantastic and pricy pedals and a MIM Strat? ...come on...
Yuck, what an awful statement to make. People like you are the reason why companies are able to get away with grossly overpriced instruments.
Hey, do you know what signature model is it?
Yeah, sure. Boss SD-1 is such an expensive boutique pedal.
