- “I’m a sick person,” confesses John Vanderslice.
He’s not wrong.
Vanderslice suffers from a terminal case of G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and it’s spreading. One recording studio became two, and then two became three as Vanderslice continues to salvage and rehabilitate only the finest pieces of vintage analog recording equipment for his Tiny Telephone recording empire. I love this dude. He actually responded to my email with advice for handheld recording devices to purchase. That meant so much to me. 😍Thanks J.V.
Randi cool! What was his rec?
@@stagnatic yeah I'm curious too!
Holy cow, I could've probably watched another three hours of this. The space has just such an inviting feel, even through the computer screen haha.
probs my fav studio out of this whole series
I recorded here once. I definitely remember a giant (empty) jar of weed in the break room.
An analog music wonderland.
absolutely! I'd live there if I could.
"that things fucking baller" god I love john vanderslice. Def one of the more underrated musicians of the last few decades.
This is definitely the spot. More studio owners like this please.
I love the confidence he has in his work and his studio. He intuitively knows what works and what sounds best and only a hell of a lot of years experience brings that.
Garth from Wayne's World became a record producer. Good for him.
...I like to play
Ironic because Dana Carey is from the bay area and based garth loosely off his older brother
We need more Vanderslice in the world.
Boldness and violence in recording. ABSOLUTELY. YES ❤️
Lisa Bella Donna huge fan! Hi :)
Dopeness
Never really thought about how annoying recording on a DAW is, all I wanna do now is record on tape.
Also Earthquaker, these videos are brilliant!❤
Thank you very much☺️
we recently made the switch to all analog & once you get away from the distraction of a screen & fucking with a mouse you can really focus in on whats going on with the band, at least that my very humble honest opinion to be taken with a grain of salt. Cheers from SATX!
Interesting comparison between tape and digital, and spot on. Digital being visual, involves the eyes, which triggers the brain thru an additional path, affecting much of the imaginary properties. Long live Analog!
Jason Robinson absolutely. You hit the nail on the head there.
Being a Bay Area guy, I’ve always wanted to record there. John’s episode of the Working Class Audio podcast is a classic.
Vanderslice is incredible and Sorensen has worked on so many of my favorite indie records of the past 10 years, great vid
Free tape, tea, coffee, and marijuana?
Again, WHY wasn’t I on this shoot??????
he's got everything you need!
I like this guy. Such a cool vibe to that spot.
¨It's super useful to have a harpsichord¨ - John Vanderslice 2018
12:17 Awwww that's the same cabinet my mom keeps her 90s Beanie Baby collection in lol
yeah this was one of my favs...this dudes a character RESPECT
I want to live here !!! great gear but more importantly great creative beings
I recorded my album at Tiny Telephone. :) A very cool place indeed.
Fond memories of failing to make a record at TT (my fault, of course). Great space and great people. I wonder if the toilet is still shared with the mechanics next door?
Interesting that Vanderslice, who I could listen to all week, holds the purity of the analogue signal path so dear, but is cool about guitar (and various other things, judging by the awesome TT aesthetic) passing through pedals with pretty lo-fi digital components.
absolutely LOVE your series!! thank you!
thanks for watching, David!
I'm, by no means, affiliated with Softube, but I was watching this today, and if you're like me and can't afford to use tape, much of the stuff he's talking about losing when you move to a computer as the recording-medium can be somewhat addressed with the Console1.
Vanderslice is the man!!! PLEASE DO DAVE FRIDMANN TARBOX ROAD!
HAL 9000 marvels analog Recording🤖
This is the greatest Studio ever!
You guys are awesome ! Keep doing that ! :)
What a GREAT place! Loved the guy, loved the vibe!
Another awesome video. Thanks, EQD!
thanks, Jake!
I am filled with envy, but also inspiration ! Thank you for this look into this madhouse of the stuff that dreams are made of !
Amazing episode!
And comment on humbling nature of digital made total sense
LOVE the facility, DIG the kitchen!!!!!
it sure would be nice to record there!!!!, i feel almost criminal with my home PT8LE rig...... :(
John is a VERY nice guy...... he has had a couple of rough spots in the road the past couple of years, but he is strong and focused..... i hope yall have a wonderful future ahead !!!!
i sure enjoy these Show Me Your Junk tours!!!!
I actually recorded here in 2006! It was a really special experience. It's fun to see all the upgrades and improvements that have happened since then
Addendum: John is a total sweetheart
Sweet!
I like that rug under the double bass. Really ties the room together! ;)
I think a youtube video of John playing acoutic version of his song white dove, randomly in my feed...introduced me to John 9 years ago or so.
I can't explain it !!!! ...
This is soooo Beautiful !!!!!
Thanks E.Q.D. !!!
:-) !!!!
That song at 9:00 is awesome. I like this guy!
What a fun guy.
John Vanderslice is a very smart man. He was also very nice when I met him.His performance was soo perfect. He brought everyone outside and played acoustic. 🙌
JV rules!
That song at 8:50 is so good! what is it?
Holy *&^% what a great studio!
Excellent video, Earthquaker! ANOTHER studio I want to record in. *sigh*
thanks for watching, Leo! I've got serious gear envy over here. I need a few Ampex 351 pres and that Neotek console in my life. Oh, and a few Josephson mics, and probably that tympani drum, and a couple dozen synthesizers...
Great episode of a cool studio- free tape?!? Long live tape!
Saw him play at Chronic Town back in 08, great intimate show.
Audiophile mindset.. And he is right about tape vs digital recording such as protools and how it affects many when they record.
He right, he righhht
This is too good.
Oh my God when I make a record I want these guys to record it mix it and master it.
Great guy, great studio, great ethos. Plus great tea coffee and weed
This is awesome
thanks!
Amazing..
thanks for watching!
I've watched 3 episodes of this series, and all 3 people seem to really really love the disaster transport pedal. Lmao
Oh my god he is sooo right.
totally.
so good
thanks for watching!
this is heaven
one mans junk is definitely another mans treasure
Homey be flexin. Oh - and one of his best friends is a computer. So stop the hate.
no hate!
hmm,.. didn't see much "junk" there
Holy freaken snikeez!!! Free coffee! Hell to the yeah! Is the weed not a distraction? All the albums come out sounding very paranoid and food-centric.
That's so funny. They have free Hobbit weed in the kitchen. I wonder if they ever get Old Toby.
"Pro tools doesn't sound good" spoken like a true music snob.
Siiiick!
awesome
I get most of what Dana Carvey says here, but to say that protools "sounds bad" is very odd to me. A lot of people said the same thing about early digital gear and now it's highly sought after if you know its strengths and know in what context to use it. Same goes for the tape vs protools debate.
Man I have never heard of this dude but I tell you I want to record there
Timpani and concert drum!? That's awesome. I had a stupid budget on an indie record one time and nobody in Jacksonville would rent us any. Obviously it's Jacksonville.
Wow, this place is amazing! It would be my dream to record here. How much for a 4 song demo hahaha
Too bad it's no longer in SF. Don't let the Tech empire colonize your city!!
@earthquaker devices what is the song that starts at 8:50?? Super good!
I have lots of walkmans, 4 track tape recorders, reel to reels, tape loops, and weird misc broken shit. Come over, I'll show you my junk!
I agree with John V. on the good old recording boldness and violence, and the fact that protools can turn you into this anal, ocd sound geek, but I think one ought to (and can be) pretty wild using software that allows you to be punk - that is, just record shit at home! Who owns these kind of reel to reel heavy duty machinery anyway? Other than that, hell yeah, go classic!
Yeah all these guys say it is so punk to record to tape. Would love to record in a studio like that but probably not in the cards. Recording into pro tools in your basement is as punk as it gets.
guy's a musical genius. I just wanna push all the buttons and turn knobs.
while you pay for every minute you spend in the studio = this weed is not free at all
FREE WEED? Ill be there in 5 mins for a 3 month session.
Hel p me out please... Outdoor Sour Diesel is what I think it is? That place is cool as fuck!
I just watched the rest of the video, it is jajajaja. Sorry!
rip tiny telephone SF
Let me record their now!!!!!
This man knows what's up
yep.
great spiel ;)
what a guy
CANYON Canyon canyon
Check out the portlandia episode with the recording studio
Yeah but where's the 424??
Dana Carvey has been doing some great work lately.
1:12 I want a sticker of that face on my forehead.
me too
Music from 0:54 and on? Love the way it sounds ;^)
That particular song is "How the West Was Won" from Vanderslice's Dagger Beach album. If you like that, you'll probably like all of his stuff.
Dana Carvey is a true polymath. In a way it's kind of a shame that he's only famous for his comedy and acting work
TAPE RULES!!!!!!!! Ampex
mm1200 here! And ATR 102!!!!
Dana Carvey runs a studio?
I have a rainbow machine and one of those later green Zap machines killer pedals.
Looks like garths post waynes world career is going well
Is this a Portlandia skit?
I'm not 100% convinced this isn't Dana Carvey under a pseudonym.
Wow. So, how do I record here?
🤯
Great stuff. Free weed. What a guy.
I do repair work on 31102's if you ever need it.
Can I visit your studio, please????
Does he live there??
Keep coming back to this one. Wait for it, wait for it: His studio looks to be a little 'Vanderslice of Heaven'. Oooh, I'm good :)
You sure someone didn't say that already? Thanks for watching it!
Let berner record for free and supply cookies instead of the sour diesel
the sour diesel could be made into butter and baked in the cookies...just an idea
Does anyone Know the cool track at 8:30?
kevindickerson.bandcamp.com/track/miami-sound-machine It's listed in the end credits.
