Vauxhall Astra Electric - Could it be the new class champion?

  • The Vauxhall Astra is as dependably British as a Melton Mowbray pork pie. And now, there is a new electric drivetrain available to try and tempt people away from the VW ID.3, Renault Megane and MG4. But at a price. Literally. Is the new 8th generation Astra worth the premium? As always, Bryan subjects it to the full AutoEV road test to try and find out.
    AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

    Note to content maker:
    Stop saying under floor storage for cables works!
    It doesn't when you want to use them.
    A side storage/hanger is way better.

    Like all Stellantis EV’s it’s way too expensive at list price. However we all know no one pays list for these.
    Will be at least 10k discount in a couple of months and massive depreciation. Probably a good buy at 18 months old.
    Whilst the car is fine it does make me wonder how on earth Stellantis can succeed with this sales model?

    Our roads are rarely smooth ones and screens are a right pita when you primary digit is bouncing around.
    Gamers design Teslas and eliminate ‘clutter’ and falling for their nonsense makes no sense ON THE ROAD.

    Handsome car great styling but too expensive Stellantis are out of touch on pricing you can get the German brands cheaper.
    Great review as always and a nice car always liked the Astra and Corsa but just get the pricing right.

      I had a rental corsa a few years back. Heavy compared to the older Astra/nova models which made for an underperforming hatchback for its quoted engine size. The BEVs should be more nimble

    I can get this “nearly new” for £27k pre-reg, ‘24 plate, delivery mileage on it. Just waiting for it to arrive at the garage so I can test drive it. Seems good value for money based on this video. Small family, just the one toddler, and daily commute is

      It’s a decent car at that price. My issue is the new price of it and how there are so many other, better cars at £40k. Under £30k however, and that’s a decent deal. Should do the job fine.

      @@AutoEV Thanks. Yeah most reviews I’ve seen are positive until price is mentioned. That’s the GS trim as well by the way for 27k, so I’m gonna go for it. I’ve been looking for an EV for a while with good build quality, decent range, that doesn’t sing and dance about being an EV. Great review, cheers.

    The Astra shares its platform with the 308 and DS4. The ëC4 shares its platform with the 208, Mokka and Corsa.: no plug-in hybrids on the latter!

    • @AutoEV
      @AutoEV  5 місяців тому +1

      I really should have a "copy & paste" response to this. First of all, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. We do longer reviews as we try to appeal to actual car buyers who want more in-depth and thorough reviews rather than the 10 minute normal one. We know that it costs us subs and views, but then we split the review into chapters so people can find the relevant bit of information easily. Its hard for a small independent channel like us to stand out in a sea of others that employ big names, or reach further, so instead of trying to compete with those who just do quick reviews about the basics, we go more in-depth, hoping that will bring us views from people who need more information to make a decision. It was a constant internal battle we had, but in the end, we feel that it's what stands us apart. Hopefully you will persevere with us and continue to enjoy the reviews.

    Odd, why they need a “transmission” tunnel for front wheel drive car! ICE or EV. Are there that many cables and brake pipes going to the rear ? Just odd. Not just on Vauxhall/Opel/Peugeot/Citroen.
    That rear seat room doesn’t look great there, nor the Peugeot 308 either - rear door access quite tight - as you seemed to catch your foot there on the way in ! I’ve been quite disappointed by that in the 308 that I’ve looked at.
    Side comment : - Think the Astra followed on from the Chevette, which followed the Viva. Apart from some engines in the Chevette, it, and all of the Astras, were really of Opel origin. In Ireland, we got our Opel Ascona/Vectras from Luton and our Opel Astras from Ellesmere Port. (No Vauxhalls here since the’80s - just as the UK had mostly no Opels (few Mantas in the early days!).

    When is Stellantis going to design a proper EV only platform to be shared among the component group companies? This and the new Corsa and all the other EVs in the group are just electrified ICE cars with totally unnecessary transmission tunnels and other carry overs from ICE cars. Way over priced like all the other Stellantis group cars.

    • @AutoEV
      @AutoEV  5 місяців тому

      Stellantis have a new multi-energy platform coming on the new Peugeot E3008 (we have done a Sneak Peek on this car) and it will change a lot of cars in the group.

    Atleast 10K overpriced for this retrofited ICE car
    This is a car that will come on the second hand market verry fast!
    51kw battery thats going to be 300km real range and ofcource you can best charge it to 80% or you destroy it faster.
    Meanin around 70% of the real range to drive... less than 200km

    I really don't like this car very much, I fint it to be very boring looking not that there are not some things I like. 1) the high brake light at the rear is cool looking but not much else. I would prefer the Renault Megane E Tech is light years ahead in design and technology.
