Tesla Model 3 - Changed. But for the better?

  • Its no exaggeration to say that the Tesla Model 3 changed the EV world significantly when it was first introduced back in 2019. Here was an electric car that could stand comparison with the very best ICE cars in the same class and be justifiably bought as an alternative with little compromises. But of course since then the game has moved on, and more competitors have emerged, many being better than the Tesla. So the Model 3 returns in very heavily revised for 2024 to take on the new upstarts who have muscled in on what was very much the car's own territory. Have they done enough to ensure the Model 3 regain's its crown? Bryan subjects it to the full AutoEV road test to find out.
AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

Agreed ethics is a massive one for me... Legacy auto have just been lying to us for 50 years.. the emissions scanda among many...but actively suppressing the development of electric vehicles... Why so they can still make all their money out of spare parts and servicing, and clearly the oil industry are not going to be happy either.. I'm loving the introduction of pure EVs.. Thank you Elon was starting it all.

Good review..one “bug bear” though is that one of your main gripes is that you say lots of stuff is “buried” in the screen….( as with the BYD)…. but all of that stuff is very easily accessible with voice control, whilst keeping your eyes on road and hands on the wheel 👍( as with the BYD). Keep up the good work

Exactly! And to add, many of the functions buried within menus are usually not needed for normal, everyday driving. Infotainment selections are available via cards (swipe) and the HVAC system is a. swipe up. Of course, a VC away as well.

I haven’t tried one yet, but I did drive a Model S Plaid last week; after a couple of roundabouts I soon got used to the indicator setup (and I’m 70+ years old) and found no problems with it at all so see it as a big fuss over nothing. I remember the furore when the first Japanese cars arrived with the indicators on the right stalk!

I like the styling of the old model but I certainly think they’ve improved it. One thing about Tesla is that they are usable in a way that other EVs struggle to match. I’ve done 60,000 miles in 18 months and have had no issues either with the car or charging… I’ll be replacing mine with the new model in due course.

Not a fan of everything on a screen (it was bad enough with just the radio on a 595), but could cope with most of it. Things like mirrors I set once before driving the first time, so not an issue if it's buried in a menu somewhere. I dont even mind the gears, as getting used to the move away from the traditional gear selector position is the hard bit, swiping up or down on a screen isnt a problem and it's only when setting off or changing direction.
But I'm not sure I could live with the indicators.
They wouldn't be an issue on motorways or even a lot of driving where it's just lane changing and it's just a muscle memory thing. But never mind roundabouts, my usual commute has a 90 degree left followed by a 90 degree right turn within a few yds. I've tried thinking about it and using the radio buttons on my current car's wheel as a test and it's impossible to do - the indicator buttons go from 9 o'clock to about 2 o'clock and would be upside down.
Unless someone comes out with an aftermarket stalk, it's a deal breaker.

One mistake. You don't need to use a WiFi hotspot to watch videos in the car if you have premium connectivity.
I got used to no stalks in the new model 3 after just a few hours after I received mine and can use the indicators in roundabouts without looking at it or thinking about it.

I own the Model 3 SR Highland and here in Switzerland there are numerous roundabouts. For the easy turn right 1st exist finding the indicator is no issue. However, 3rd exit roundabouts I'm still looking down at my steering to find the indicator. I've now resorted to keeping my hand and finger on the right indicator button and cross over my arms for 3rd exit roundabouts. If Tesla keep this feature in their most successful Model Y model which are mostly driven by women they will lose many new and repeating customers. My partner hates driving my Tesla because she can't transition from her car that she drives everyday to searching for the indicators in my car. So any trips we do now together, we do it in her Chevrolet Trax 1.4l gear shift car. Or she says, we go in your car but I don't want to drive. For such a small thing, an indicator stalk.
Well Tesla saved some money again like with the parking sensors. 🤣

Thanks for a very thorough review. As a TSLA investor I am pleased that Tesla has made the numerous improvements you point out. But, I agree that removing the stalks was a big mistake. I used to own a 2022 Model S with the yoke and no stalks. Sold it because of no stalks and that the shape of the yoke made ingress and egress cumbersome. Happily converted to BMW i4. Another thing Teslas have been missing in recent years is a data ready USB port for playing music from USB sticks. They used to have such ports in all models but the bean counters took them away. Thankfully, the BMW i4 and iX do have USB ports where I can listen to my music library.

I definitely dont buy cause of facts and figures. I have tried pretty much every EV I can test and there is NO aboslutely NO other brand that even comes close to the Tesla HMI, Polestar is a great car. Its slightly faster than the M3LR that I ordered and the Öhlins suspension is superb, seats are great but its a horrible car to live with cause the infotainment feels like a 7 year old tablet.
I really like the new steering wheel, gives a nice gokart feeling when driving. Don't mind at all the lack of stalks.
Never drove a BYD Seal but looked at one, didnt like it. Also with 520km WLTP compared to 678 in the M3LR its a bit behind. Also HMI/Infotainment does not come close to Teslas.

A few points - regen in all EVs is about feathering the throttle to maintain the correct speed, this is a complete change in driving style. You can change the way the car slows, but agreed lack of adjustment isn't ideal.
99% of Tesla controls have voice or shortcuts you read the manual and you learn tips. Eg press voice button and say my bum is cold. Use the scroll wheel to change the wiper's speed etc swiping right or left to increase or decrease temperature.
Same as on the model S the gear selection is intelligent, if you are facing a wall and press the pedal it will detect and reverse without you selecting the drive.
The White interior is well known to stay in good condition with kids or not - cars have 50k miles or more and look like new. Just wipe them with a wipe and they are clean.
    Anyway great review and balanced.

Greetings from Oxford. Tesla’s styling has never appealed to me. If these were a bog standard combustion cars I doubt many people would buy them. Where Tesla is way ahead is in their engineering and technology. The Highland M3 is a big improvement. I still think the M3 should have been a hatchback like the MS. Personally I will be keeping my BMW i3 for now; however the much anticipated M2 is one I will be wanting to see - just hope the styling won’t be butt ugly.

I'd have to say there are no EV's in this market segment that are going to pull on the heart strings, you'd possibly jump upto Audi GT ETron for the styling to start hitting the mark. With the old Model 3 a SR/LR would give you a very sporty car. For the new Model 3 I think you will have to go for the yet to be released Performance to get something similar.

On the indicators... what isn't mentioned or highlighted is the indicators are digital and work with cameras, while traditional indicators are mechanical. So with the stalks it sometimes doesn't cancel or you have the soft touch 3 flashes which has cancelled before you you've finished your lane change or turn. With the highland it knows your maneuver is complete and cancels as it monitors via the cameras. So if you gradually change lanes the indicator remains on until the lane change is complete. It's actually genius, one of my favourite parts of the new car.

If you have to open functions in the screen, in left hand drive, quite comfortable, seeing as most people are right handed. However, accessing the functions of basic controls in a screen, is distracting to the driver. The indicator switches should be outlawed. Surely a fixed switch position is safer? Tesla fans will no doubt say, you get used to it, but I bet they get used to not indicating as frequently. Good considered review. Thank you.

Picking up on the "facts and figures" mentioned near the end. Technical superiority under the covers, e.g. the motors, thermal management, batteries and software (which is frequently updated to add functionality and improve the car over time, not just fix bugs), make a real and lasting difference to the pleasure of ownership in my experience. Taking a long trip in the winter in our Tesla compared to the EVs we had before is night and day better, day to day ease of use and performance versus consumption is better. Looks, materials used, how it drives, the controls etc. tend to be quite subjective. Tesla's way won't be for everybody, but give them more credit for areas of technical advantages where they are years ahead of the competition. It all adds up, but you only find out when you own one.

Not just useless but as I said dangerous. The indicator switch is just dumb. Designed in a country without roundabouts. Type approval really should be removed until that is fixed. Yes that can be achieved by a recall. In the meantime third party stalks could perhaps be fitted.

But on topic, I got mine last week (RWD) and compared the Seal, the Polestar, the ID7, The Volvo EC40, and even the BMW i4 but there was no hesitation in ordering the M3. The tech departement of this car is just miles and miles ahead on the other cars. The quality had improved significantly in comparance to the “old one”. The double glazing makes the car super quit. But on the consumption department there is no car on the market with this low consumption. Add to this the briliant network of Superchargers and you know why you should order the Tesla.

I do so want to like the Model 3 because as Bryan says by so many logical metrics it is a great and very innovative car. I have on a couple of occasions got close to taking the plunge as it would be a terrific complement to my BMW i3. The build and paint quality of early examples were awful and as someone who ran a series of BMW 3 Series as my company car I was not prepared to accept such deficiencies especially as the minimalist interior just didn’t have the ambiance of a BMW or Audi. The fanatic tech was however a draw. I got close to placing an order about 18 months ago but whilst the price at the beginning of 2022 at just above £40k at the beginning of the year was just about acceptable there was in no way in my mind that a SR+ (with parking sensors removed) was value at nearly £49k by the end of the year. I am still at a loss as to why Tesla embarked on such an aggressive pricing strategy only to reverse it (and more) at the beginning of 2023. From being expensive the SR+ is now, particularly with the added range, is now exception value. I just don’t understand why anyone would now pay £10k for the Long Range twin motor - especially with access to the Supercharger network. There is no doubt that incremental increases in build quality has been really topped of in the Highland but then Tesla shoot themselves in the foot again by removing the drive and indicator stalks. I drive a M3 quite often and I enjoy how it cobbles up the motorway miles, the front visibility and the airy cabin. I didn’t though enjoy driving back from Leeds (to Sevenoaks) on a cold wet evening last week when the black night vision tablet made the cabin very depressing and the touch screen difficult to operate. I can’t understand how removing the indicator stalks complies with the spirit (if not the law) of vehicle construction and use regulations. It is as if Tesla have engaged Adrian Newey (of Red Bull Racing) to find ambiguities in the rule book to gain some (in this case) cost advantage. I guess though if there is not an immediate backlash that prompts Tesla to have a change of heart for Europe destined cars there will be a clever aftermarket fix from a Far Eastern supplier - just like there are suppliers of driver instrument panels. My other bug bear about the M3 is that it is still quite a big (long) car and not the easiest to park. Rear vision is really very poor because of the high window line. In fact the rear styling is a bit like a fat ****. It was just a pity that the car was never engineered to be a hatchback like the Model S. Bryan was absolutely right to say that even i updated form the M3 just doesn’t connect with us former petrolheads as a emotional purchase. As a company car with all the tax benefits and super easy charging the Model 3 as an absolute no brainer but to my mind misses out, unlike Apple products, by being the product of being rather arrogant, as opposed to clever, designers.

I think as long as you are happy with a white Tesla Model 3, the standard range at under £40k is amazing. The costs of Kia, Hyundai, BYD, even MG when you compare the extras to include the heat pumpand similar tech as the Tesla, are mostly over the cost of the Tesla Model 3. Also not forgetting that tax rates will change for EV's and I am not sure I trust the government to not add the over £40k tax to older cars that it would still apply to. Also finance over £40k starts to add up even more.
My Kia E Niro 4+ is leased and goes back in 5 months, so I am deciding what to do for my next EV. The new efficiency of the Tesla is also a big improvement for me. I would miss having Apple Car Play but feel the indicators issue is not a big problem.
Final part of the Tesla appeal at this time is their rapid charging prices that are half that of most other rapid chargers. To clarify I have only charged away from home about 20 times over the past 30 months!

I drive an August 2023 Shanghai built Model 3 Long Range in a regional city in Australia. The range is necessary and if I take a longer trip I can drive without charging to Canberra, or a with a single 20 minute Supercharger stop can drive easily from Albury to Sydney. Canberra is a City full of roundabouts, large and small. The stalks make driving in Canberra a real pleasure. My own smaller City has many large and small roundabouts, some have high speed limits. Buttons on the steering wheel drove my choice for one of the very last produced previous series. Tesla design is very much based in personal opinion, and I like the design of mine and I do find it joyous to drive, and I think the external design of the Highland is also very good. Of EV’s available in Australia Tesla are excellent. BMW, Mercedes, Hyundai, BYD and many other vehicles are available. I chose Tesla because of range, Supercharging network and software support. There’ll always be something “better”, but my Tesla is certainly better enough for me. Tesla’s regen braking is better than that of many other manufacturers, and I love it. An excellent review.

I also don't know how to feel about the car not having parking distance sensors. Going backward it does an admirable job I think, also adjusting side mirrors downwards automatically in addition to all the cameras on the screen. But it's really missing a front facing camera, and with that a 360 degree view of the car to make it on par with its competitors in this category.
I was actually looking into buying a saloon/sedan and it's these things, and to a smaller degree the price, that made me choose the BYD Seal over the Tesla, despite its amazing refinement and arguably class-leading practicality.

You made the right choice with the BYD. Unfortunately, in Switzerland the BYD will only go on sale at the end of 2024. I needed a new company car and it had to be an EV, so I got the Model 3 Highland standard range. Parking and roundabout with this car requires another level of awareness. I new the issues with Tesla Vision as it's all over the internet. But now I know 1st hand that it does not work reliably and not at all when parking front wards. I now park backwards most of the time to avoid hitting the front splitter on curbs, etc.
Have you experienced phantom breaking with the BYD yet? Also, how was the delivery process, quality of the car, etc.
When I took delivery of my Tesla, I was informed to check the car. I said to them why should I check the car. The kind lady said that Tesla do no quality checks other than prepare the car for delivery. She gave me a list of items that I needed to check and also said if I'm not happy, I could refuse delivery. The items I found on the car where mostly cosmetic. Front hood and trunk not aligned, smudge marks on back seat, two door handles not flush with the body. I was then kindly shown by the lady how to log all the issues I found on the Tesla app and select a service date.
Now I have to say, I was aware of the Tesla low touch approach and was looking forward to the experience. But so low touch and the quality of the car at delivery truly killed all the excitement for the car.

It's a very dangerous thing to allow each manufacturer to decide how to set up the user interface. I don't know how Tesla got away with the indicators, just like with the yoke in the Model S. If there's any vacuum in the legislation about those bits it must be filled in ASAP. Or we can get to a place where you won't be able to drive a different car from yours. I tested both BMW i4 and the new Model 3 one week ago. One hour with each car.
There is more windnoise from the i4 especially from the frontdoor windows. It was actually little disturbing. I thought the door or window was still open sometimes.
Then there was also more roadnoise in the i4. I was surpriced of the roadnoise from the i4. An annyoing low frequent sound from the front wheels.

Anyone taking their fanboy hat off and being truly objective should admit the removal of stalks is a huge step back when we’re years off self-driving being viable, so being able to safely indicate isn’t optional.
Combine that with the lack of instruments or HUD (again, we’re years off self-driving, so not being able to safely see what speed you’re doing is just plain dangerous) and things like Apple CarPlay make it such an easy no for me.

Test drive first then decide for yourself.
