Lettuce tip: I learned this as a teen working in a restaurant 40 years ago - palm the head of lettuce and slam the core on the counter, just hard enough to 'pop' the core loose; then pull it out of the head. Might need a little twist of the core to finish breaking it loose.
I can't wait to try this! You have the right olives, and the pimento is a type of roasted red pepper. Get some anchovy paste, and mix it into the dressing, it'll add great depth of flavor. You've already had anchovies if you've eaten Caesar Salad, they're mashed up and in the dressing. Love your channel, thank you!
I'm from the Tampa Bay Area and have eaten at Colombia Restaurant many times and have never been disappointed. Thank you for reproducing this wonderful salad.
I flipping love my spinner! It’s saved my produce for much longer as well. If you make hash browns or other veggies that need that water out it’s a game changer.
I have been cooking for a big family for five decades. I have always washed the head of lettuce by cutting off the bitter part at the end, opening up the leaves a little, then rinsing it well in cold water. Let it drain in a colander for two minutes and then wrap it in a clean dish towel, take it out on the porch, and swing it around vigorously, holding the four corners of the towel firmly in your hand. In the spring and summer you can aim the swinging towel towards your flower planters. You’re welcome. 😬 (If you have a preadolescent boy in the house this is a chore that they usually beg to do. 😅)
Just use the olives😊the pimentos won’t change too much. They aren’t spicy. And pimento cheese is called pimento cheese bc you add the pimentos to the “cheese”. It’s a mixture of different things along with cheese and the pimentos. Very delicious and southern!!
So I just found this channel, I love watching cooking videos. That salad looks nommy and not hard to make. I'd have added the olives, the pimento would have added a nice flavor too, but I'm a total olive fan.
Yum.....this looks very similar to the salad I can vouch was the key to my weight change after two children and stress stress stress lifestyle. I dropped the weight quickly and easily, energy was great, went to a few gym sessions to tone and lengthen muscles, discovered how muscle mass help metabolism, started running (!) Felt really good about muscle tone. I did fall off the keto path so weight returned for a while. I fixed a few things, leaned back into keto.....slow slow slow habits turned around, now I'm getting back into the zone and finding a way to move things around so that life is improving.....keto is great, focus on what works . 💖
Anchovy blended into your salad dressing would be delightful. It's one of the ingredients that adds to the flavor of Caesar dressing. I apologize if I affected your love for Caesar salad
Pimientos, also known as pimentos or cherry peppers, are a mild and sweet red pepper. Salad looked good, I would have added the olives, but I love olives. Total win Dave!!
In this summer time, we eat a salad for lunch almost everyday! We also love the 1905 Columbia Salad (we use to go to the one in Sarasota). They sell their dressing at Publix.
Looks yummy! Will definitely try it. Thanks for the info about Dave’s market. I am a member of a couple other marketplaces on district so I just joined yours too.
The core the yellow part has the most zinc,I never believed it had any nutritional value but it does. I agree with the others that the yellow part is the best part. It looks good and I will definitely try it.TY
Queen refers to the size of the olives ! They are still green olives rather than cured (black ) olives. Julienne is long narrow strips of meat or veg. Yes you eat the center of lettuce! Caesar dressing is healthy if made with good olive oil and parmesan and fresh egg yolk or coddled egg, fresh lemon juice etc.. I’d double the meat and cheese. Olive oil 954 calories per half cup. Salad looks delicious. I’d probably put the dressing (including anchovies, which, by the way are in Caesar dressing) in my Nutribullet to mix- makes a nice emulsification.
There used to be a restaurant here in eastern ontario, Canada called the Blue Gardenia. That looks exactly like their signature salad that was soooooooo yummy. This brought back some great memories of it. Gotta make it.
The person above had it right with anchovies paste. It’s a total game changer for depth. It really doesn’t make it taste fishy. A lil goes a long way & is ahmazing
Pull out the core of the lettuce… that way your greens won’t go brown as fast. The knife will make it go brown faster… also pulling the core out then you don’t have that hard icky lettuce in the middle…
Hi dave. Im going to make this to keep me on track through Christmas. I am carnivore , but im more than ok with making my cheat for the holidays a keto cheat instead of a SAD cheat. Thank you for this great recipe ! Merry Christmas 🎅
You can easily remove the core of the head of lettuce by doing this: grab the head by the top, and slam the root into the counter one or two times, and the core will fall out.
The Columbia Restaurant original restaurant is in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida. That's a branch restaurant. I don't understand what you've done with the lettuce. I'd recommend knowing how to handle food prior to showing a demonstration of it. Removing the core of a head of lettuce is in the top 10 first things to learn in a kitchen. (as is to julienne) Great job.
Pimento cheese is a cheese sandwich spread, usually Cream cheese, Mayo, shredded cheddar, and the red pimento peppers ( which you also can buy, by themselves, sans the Olives. This salad reminds me a lot of the Maurice salad from the old Hudson restaurants here in Michigan. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that salad, and the knockoff recipe is DEEEELISH!!!!! Its a mayo based dressing. I actually love salad though, so this is right up my alley. Heres a name suggestion.... Neeto keto meat-o salad
Get a large wooden salad bowl, crush one clove of that garlic and rub the bowl with it before adding any meat and vegetables…wonderful taste enhancement to your salad
Salads are filling for us in our home, and to me a lot like stews! You don't need a recipe, just add the basics & sometimes what you have on hand! Then offer dufferent sakad dresding yo family members oreference. Byt, i wiol make this exactly at 1st! AND. Dave those olives look great! Im going to getvtgrm gor Christmas. Adding in the roasted red peppes and a few bright green peppersxwill go with the Holidays colors. Very balanced flavor with the olive oil , lemon & white vinegar! For Keto, include boiled eggs & bacon or cold steak , seafood.... 😋
No one can make me yell nooo at the screen like you, Dave😱 That wasted lettuce😤 Aargh‼ You're right about the olives, though. Castelvetrano green olives are the best; and their mild, buttery flavor cannot be replicated.
I can’t remember when I bought iceberg lettuce. It is not a good nutritional lettuce . Think darker green lettuce. Love ham, turkey, cheese, nuts, and of course other veggies in my salads. Protein helps the staying power of salad as a meal.
Hey I’ve been to that restaurant! Dont they have a cute little gift shop in the front? I loved St Augustine! We also ate at Prohibition Kitchen. My friend had FROG LEGS!🐸
Lettuce tip: I learned this as a teen working in a restaurant 40 years ago - palm the head of lettuce and slam the core on the counter, just hard enough to 'pop' the core loose; then pull it out of the head. Might need a little twist of the core to finish breaking it loose.
Exactly how I've always done it.
Yes, it works for cabbage too!
That's how I learned it also. Now, 63 years later, I'm still doing it that way. Slam that core down and twist it out the and rest of lettuce is great.
You learn that when you’re 15 years old.
It didn't work for me with cabbage but works great for lettuce 😊@kitcat1278
The hard stuff in the middle is the best. Satisfying and crunchy.
Definitely the best part!!
Noooo ... tastiest part of iceberg lettuce. :-)
Absolutely!!!
I agree!
Agreed! It’s sweet and crunchy . Delicious!!
I love salads. I’ll put turkey or ham, a little bit of nut & dried fruit mix, cheese. It is indeed a full meal for me. Sooooo good.
Spanish green olives come stuffed with pimento, which is a vegetable.
The queen olives are usually used in martini's, but would be fine in the salad.
The yellow part is sweet and tender, it's the hard thick white lettuce you want to get rid of, it's bitter.
The hard stuff is the core. If you want, you slam your lettuce bottom first on your cutting board and the core will twist out.
I was hoping someone would say this! I always do this. I don’t know many people who do…friends think I’m crazy and then try it and are amazed
Exactly how my mom taught me .
@@nodrogytsirkit’s old school 😊
I'm from the Tampa Bay Area and have eaten at Colombia Restaurant many times and have never been disappointed. Thank you for reproducing this wonderful salad.
Get you an OXO salad spinner and it is a life changer!!!
I wouldn't eat any salads if I didn't have a salad spinner-and it's also a great longer term salad keeper. Saved my keto diet.
I flipping love my spinner! It’s saved my produce for much longer as well. If you make hash browns or other veggies that need that water out it’s a game changer.

I keep a clean pillow case in the kitchen for just that. 🙂
I use a salad spinner it works great but the swinging in the towel sounds like more fun 😂
The olives you had were perfect. The recipe calls for pimento-stuffed green olives.
I love that you are making something you dont know how to make! I LOVE A GOOD SALAD.
Caesar dressing is very much keto. You can do pork rings or a carni/keto bread for croutons.
As long as you make it yourself 😅... Because some from the store, contain more carbs then you might like
The yellow lettuce is the best!
Vegetable lovers like me clicked on the thumbnail cos it looked tasty. I love salads with lots of different ingredients and NO shop bought dressings.
Dude - you nailed both the salad and juxtapostion!!! Get you fancy man
Just use the olives😊the pimentos won’t change too much. They aren’t spicy. And pimento cheese is called pimento cheese bc you add the pimentos to the “cheese”. It’s a mixture of different things along with cheese and the pimentos. Very delicious and southern!!
OMG! Thanks for sharing this recipe. I had the same salad at Columbia restaurant a few years ago and have been meaning to try to re-create it at home!
That's about two servings for me. I love a BIG bowl of salad and that one looks yummy! I wouldn't use iceberg lettuce though. I'd use romaine lettuce.
So I just found this channel, I love watching cooking videos. That salad looks nommy and not hard to make. I'd have added the olives, the pimento would have added a nice flavor too, but I'm a total olive fan.

Little strips = Julliene
I last ate at the Columbia Restaurant over 30 years ago. It was amazing. I'm happy to see that it is still in business. It is a beautiful restaurant.
Pimientos, also known as pimentos or cherry peppers, are a mild and sweet red pepper. Salad looked good, I would have added the olives, but I love olives. Total win Dave!!
You could just pull out the pimento and wha-la....you have green olives.
I think you meant “voilà.”
@@LWilkesI’m Canadian….we say this…wondering if Americans say wha-la?
@@nodrogytsirk I'm American and I don't know why people say "wha-la." Drives me a little nuts, though. (I need a life, lol.)
I literally kept saying that the TV screen😂
Lol
Looks good, but I would have cut up the olives and tossed them in too!😊😋
I thrifted a salad spinner yesterday.
In this summer time, we eat a salad for lunch almost everyday! We also love the 1905 Columbia Salad (we use to go to the one in Sarasota). They sell their dressing at Publix.
Just went and got everything I need. Thanks for the recipe.
Brb going to the store to grab the ingredients now! Lol looks delicious! Love me a good salad!
I love how funny & realistic you are Dave... Nvr Change!
I love, love salads! Thank you, Dave
Stack it, roll it, and slice it 😉
Looks yummy! Will definitely try it. Thanks for the info about Dave’s market. I am a member of a couple other marketplaces on district so I just joined yours too.
That salad is beautiful

This looks Delicious... Thanks 4 Sharing, Dave!
That looks really good bro.
Okay I actually am adding this to our New Year's menu! Thanks Dave!
Yummm that looks delicious! 😋
Caesar dressing is keto friendly. Instead of croutons I use Parmesan Whisps. They are awesome
My favorite salad and the most wonderful Old Fashions can be found at the Columbia.
Yes! I lived in Saint Augustine and love this salad!
This looks so good Dave! Making this tonight! 🍽️🥗😋🩵

Omgosh I loved that salad🤩🤩🤩 I ordered it so often at the Ybor City restaurant when I lived in Tampa most my life!!
That looks amazing😋😋Good Job Dave🍽️🥗
I love that you're in Florida as well.
Well done, Dave!
I love love love swiss cheese. I made one of these a long time ago. Now I'm going to make one today. Gotta go to the grocery store!

Merry CHRISTmas and a Blessed New Year!!
I love that place! We go to the one in St Armands circle. Not sure if there's another one. Great video!
Love Columbia (I have easy access to the one in Celebration) and love this salad. It is actually very keto-friendly and delicious.
With the exception of the root core you use all of the salad. The yellow is sweet and tender.
OMG I love St Augustine! How lucky you are to live so close.
Looks so good!!!
I caught it! Christmas Vacation. Best Christmas movie!!
The yellow hard stuff is my favorite
This looks delicious! 😋
Just join, that salad looks great. I am trying to slim down what I eat in order lose weight and control my diabetes. I will try making this salad.
Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies.
If you bang the stem of the lettuce on the counter it will just pull out
The yellow core part tends to be a bit bitter but is perfectly edible.
Shout out to the Colombia! 1905 salad is the best!
I will create this feast . Thank you much 🎉
I love this guy
Looks so good 👍
I will be making the dressing to keep in the frig for my salads

Try COBB SALAD, one of my favs. Don't know if restaurants make it these days. (ham, cheese, baconbits, chopped egg, chopped green onion, tomatoes)
I was taught in a restaurant that you never cut lettuce you tear it with your hands. Cutting it will bruise the lettuce and make it turn brown faster.
i love the way you cook! you just go for it!
Salad looks great 😋
Those queen olives with pimentos are for making Martinis 🍸 😊
Caesar dressing can be keto! Basically mayo, vinegar, anchovy, garlic, mustard.

I don't really like the heart of the lettuce head, but my husband loves it. So I guess your preference? I leave it in.
Christmas Vacation.
I hate swiss too but there is a cheese at costco that sells swiss+american and it is actually good.
Always gut your nightshades. Seeds are not only bitter, but they're inflammatory.
Put your wet lettuce in a towel and whip it around in a circle. All of the water will come out of it. Love your videos
I’m proud of you Dave!
Get a salad spinner yes!!!
