First congrats on the dish. I'm Fijian so my apologies for a little correction - that is called tavioka solo or tavioka yaca or 'vakalavalava' or just tapioca or cassava cake. A variation on that and makes it even delish is mixing in equal parts grated ripe banana. Like amazing !! Another variation is baking the same in a pan ( like a cake ) and when done, cover the top with a thin or thick layer of whipped (stiff ) condensed milk & lemon. ... Now vakalolo means "in coconut cream". It's a desert where the pounded cooked cassava or breadfruit or taro is cut or shaped into bite size pieces and generously coated with coconut cream caramel - which is done by slowly melting brown sugar ( even white ) so it does not burn and once all melted and looking golden brown you add thick coconut cream then cook this for some time til it's reduced to a nice syrupy consistency. Apologies again for the correction.
Absolutely no need to apologize! Thank you for correcting me! I will change the name right away. I’ve had the baked version with a topping and it is Amazing!
My top favorite snack/desert. So delicious and healthy too. Favorite since my childhood in Fiji. I saw the Phillies make it using eggs and boy was I surprised. So I made a batch and let them try, boy oh boy, were they surprised more than me !😱. I love authentic Fiji foods. Vinkavakalevu lewa 💐🙏🏻⚘. Glad I found this channel. May you prosper more !!
Thank you fo such a beautiful recipe. I’m an Indo Canadian and my husband is Fijian. I can learn a lot of fijian food through your channel. Thank you 🙏🇫🇯
Lovely recipe. Some Fijians use some nutmeg too, I guess everyone has their preffered variation of making it. I liked yours, and the caramel color looks so inviting girl. Thanks for sharing.
I'm Venezuelan and my husband is Fijian... I want to surprise him cooking something delicious from his country. We live in USA and it's really hard for him to have a taste of home here.❤
Thank you Tameka! We ate this a lot growing up because the ingredients were available in our garden. Crazy how we miss the most simple things about the country once we move! Thanks for watching love! ♥️
I was surprised when I first heard your voice I thought you were Asian(Filo). When you started narrating and using the word 'i', I was shook. No insult Intended 🥰 Your voice just reminded me of my very cute petite Filo friend. Thanks for the upload. Some I purchased in the past at the fiji markets had a brown sauce oozing out around the cassava cake. Is that just more sugar sauce?
No insult taken! Although I’m a Pacific Islander, my heritage/background is South Asian (Indian) but I am glad I brought back some loving memories for you! I would guess the one you purchased probably had a caramel filling of sorts. ♥️ much love
I don’t remember if I shared this tip in my video but if you place the leaves on fire just briefly, it makes it more pliable. Any type of heat will help it become easier to work with. I hope this helps :)
Hey thanks for clarifying. Growing up in Fiji, in our household we always referred to it as vakalolo. I do agree that there are different names for it. Appreciate it!

Reminds me a little bit of Guyanese cassava pone. Except this is steamed. Great recipe Romi!
We have a cassava cake recipe in Fiji. Is Cassava Pone baked? I think Ive watched the video on your channel, but don't quite remember :)
Simply Blissful Living Yes cassava pone is baked. I dont have it on my channel yet.
I've seen that recipe somewhere, because I remember it being really close to Cassava Cake (tavioka yaca). Maybe we should collab on that video ;)
Simply Blissful Living Ooohh yes.

It’s solo or vakalolo
I think there are various names for this dish depending on your household. Whatever you or someone else may call it, it definitely is yummy!
Our favourite vakalolo in Fiji. Vinaka vakalevu.
You’re welcome. (Sorry hum Fijian meh nai janta Kaise bolo). It’s one of my favorites too!
Means thank you very much.
I understood that part. I just don’t know how to say you’re welcome in Fijian. 😉
Yummy vinaka vakalevu

Ekdum set. Tum right hai?
music too loud 🙉
Taina Basken thanks for the feedback.
It's not Vakalolo. It's Tavioka-Yaca.
Hey thanks for clarifying. Growing up in Fiji, in our household we always referred to it as vakalolo. I do agree that there are different names for it. Appreciate it!
What makes it Tavioka-Yaca instead of Vakalolo?
Traditional vakalolo ginger was never used
Then don’t use it when you make it ... 🤷🏽♀️
fiji sugar is the best ...
Agreed! Thanks for stopping by!
This snack is called ‘madrai’ NOT Vakalolo!! Vakalolo is made with a lolo syrup!!!!!!
I grew up knowing this as vakalolo and do agree that there are various names for it and many variations. Hope you find the recipe you’re looking for.
Ginger ? Hmmm.....that's something new
Try it! You may love it ;) my family has been making it with ginger since before I can remember
