Encounters in Space was how I finished the original Gundam show when I was a kid since it got pulled due to 9/11 happening. Played it again about a year back and it really does hold up. Also it introduced me to Johnny Ridden and the High Mobility Zaku II which both are easily in my top five favorite Gundam characters and suits.
I was rushing to the comments to say exactly this. It was how i got to experience the ending of the original show!! Also back at that time Stardust Memory was on the late night time slots so I never got to see it in full, only watching the Kou and Gato fight post Solomon (which is quite the episode to start on!) when I was over a friends house. I got so used to the voices from this game that when I finally got the DVDs a year or so later it took some getting used to.
The original show getting pulled because of 9/11 was just an excuse of Bandai America to not make Bandai Japan upset. The real reason why they pulled Gundam off the air was because it rated so terribly.
The mission mode made me always want a RPG set in the one year war. Imagining building your pilots skills over time, choosing perks as the campaign progresses.

It's interesting to look back as a somewhat obsessive Gundam fan and see just how many side stories were first officially introduced to the US in this game. There's a Stardust Memory radio drama episode, the Mayfly of Space, Thoroughbred (original and alternative versions), the video game version of Blue Destiny (the one volume manga came out first in the states I think), and the old MSV stories for Johnny and Shin. Combined with the second run variations in the Main story (including more TV series specific elements and crossovers with Johnny, Shin, and Gato) and the pretty brutal but fun mission mode, it really had a lot to come back to. The successor game Gundam Seed: Never Ending Tomorrow, unfortunately doesn't quite live up to Encounters in Space in replayablity and can feel extra grindy with the new assist characters, but it's also a fun game.
I can say, after playing through Gundam vs Zeta Gundam, the gameplay feel of Encounters Space is seriously impressive too. I actually prefer it, although I think GvsZ is a better game overall.
It's important to point out that towards the end of the war Gundam is barely capable to keep up with Amuro's fast reflexes so they have upgraded it's joints with magnetic coating and Amuro supposed to receive the Alex but we all know that it got destroyed towards the end of 0080 War In The Pocket.

I LOVE this game and played it a ton back in the day. I don't remember if I S-ranked every mission, but I tried my damnedest. In addition to being just an all-around blast to play, I also appreciated how it provided tons of history and lore for the entirety of the early Universal Century: you sure as heck weren't gonna be able to play as Shin Matsunaga in any other title, especially at the time. Being able to create custom pilots was fun, too, and I created any number of different ones. I remember there being special perks for using the names of certain Sunrise staffers: "Mark Simmons" was one that did...something. I don't remember at this point, but it was still a fun bonus. As much as I love the gameplay of the Extreme Vs series, I miss the storytelling and lore that this title provided. I wish they would revisit this gameplay concept, tighten it up and expand the scope to encompass more of the Gundam universe(s). All that said, my favorite part of Encounters in Space was being able to play as the Val Varo, which is my favorite mobile armor. It was confined to versus mode, but I still put tons of time into it.
I also remember that there was someone on this game's GameFAQs board who made a fan story, in which you can play along doing these challenges that they set up.
This...was probably my second gundam game that I ever played, Dynasty Warriors Gundam being my first. I fell in love using the Blue Destiny units and trying to get Gundam G04.
This was one of the first games I got with my ps2 and it was the one that introduced me to the gundam franchise for the first time. Ah, the nostalgia...
I love that you include the PlayStation 2 bootup and the memory card loading, nice touch. Do you think you'll play or talk about MSG One Year War on PS2?
That is a solid PS2 title that sadly didn't get released in the states. That one you get a section where you take on Ramba Ral invading the white base in a rail style shooting mode Time Crisis esque part of the game that I was like "WOAH, this is cool!"
Fun fact, if you are playing vs mode with another person and down their ship/gundam, an intro plays that the dying player cannot skip while the surviving player can still roam. And you can attack the other player while the are stuck in the into, killing them before they can actually use their character. Its a hilarious cheese.
A shame about the coppyright claim, but it's really cool that the main theme of Gundam 3 plays in the game. I'll have to pick this one up at some point, the PS2 really was THE console for mecha games. The best SRW and Macross games also came out on that console.
6:30 Counterpoint: The Zeon commander was a bozo for having his ship follow the White Base in neutral territory instead of doing the British action of waiting outside the borders and firing from there
Great video man. Well done. I LOVE this game. I remember seeing this and Budokai 2 at a store and when I mentioned how the gamecube didn’t have these games my mom bought me a PS2, and those two games for it. I loved the controls of this game, and the music was amazing too. Creating your own pilot felt fun, and the suit selection was great. I loved the different stories in the game, especially Thoroughbred. I’m Suprised you didn’t mention that you can complete that story with an alternate ending if you rank high enough! His buddy can live! By far my favorite Gundam game, and I’m suprised so many fans dislike it.
The game really is special, the more and more Gundam games I cover, the more I realize just how good it is. Gameplay just feels so smooth and it holds up incredibly well. I need to go back and play Thoroughbred again, I will certainly cover it in more detail in the future.
@@JarboeGaming Absolutely. I’ve got Journey I need to play through, and Zeonic front. I’ve started that one, but man if you put it down for any length of time you forget how to play it. At least that’s how it is for me. Been really enjoying your content. Keep up the good work friend! Subscribed!
I wasn't sure if you were going to cover more of the Ace combat missions because with Cima mode you get the Mayfly in Space short that has only been released subbed in America with the Gundam 0083 Bluray that came out a few years ago. That game is the ONLY dub of that short to exist. I have to give these PS2 Gundam games credit because of the media/dubbing used in the games that have never been released on physical media anywhere else. So for peopel who want to see certain scenes in Gundam dubbed its gotta be through these games.
Kou's missions also include a mission that's based on a somewhat obscure audio drama sidestory of 0083 if I remember correctly.(It's the mission where you use the prototype rifle to destroy a Chivvay) Which is interesting in that it's the only way you can really experience that bit of story outside of the audio drama.
@@SOMEGUY7893 Yea thats right. I remember playing that mission and going "This definelty wasn't in the anime, maybe this is some side story from Japan." I gotta wonder if the same team kept making Gundam games today, would we get adaptations of Gundam Sentinel, Gaia Gear and Crossbone Gundam story lines in Gundam games.
I've heard over the years the movement was much like zone of the enders which is an all time favorite. I never knew it had other series suits in vs. though.
Hope to see a remaster of this with more fleshed out mission mode and all one year war ace pilots for ace pilot mode and bigger player count for the versus mode (just turn it to multiplayer )
I had Encounters in Space, but I honestly bounced off of it. Coming off of Gundam vs Zeta Gundam and Zeonic Front, I just couldn't get into it like I did the other games. It's not exactly a Gundam only game but I hope you've heard of the Another Century's Episode series. It's a mecha crossover game made by From Software. It has the best Mecha gameplay in my opinion and it really nailed the sense of scale a mecha should have. The third game is the best since it really takes advantage of the crossover aspect, the interactions between Garrod, Renton, and Gainer are all gold. It's also the game where the RX-78-2 is one of the most broken suits in the game, believe it or not. As for what Gundam's series and suits are in the game. There are *Mobile Suit Gundam* - Gundam - Full Armor Gundam *Char's Counterattack* - Nu Gundam/HWS - Re-GZ/BWS - Sazabi - Jagd Doga (Gyunei and Quess) - Geara Doga (NPC) - Jegan (NPC) *G Gundam* - Burning Gundam - Master Gundam *Gundam X* - Gundam X/Divider - Gundam DX/DX-Falcon - Gundam Airmaster - Gundam Leopard - Gundam Ashtaron - Gundam Virsago - Gundam Ashtaron Hermit Crab - Gundam Virsago Chest Break - Daughtress (NPC) - Dome Bit (NPC) *Gundam Wing Endless Waltz* -- Wing Zero Custom *Gundam Seed* - Freedom Gundam/Meteor - Justice Gundam/Meteor *Extra* - Perfect Gundam It's Japanese only (No doubt a fault of the Macross licensing issues) but I hope you check it out. The story is actually fairly simple and isn't really required for the gameplay. It's a fun time regardless, Gamefaqs also has menu and objective translations.
Every cutscenes in this game is actually redone, and remastered, a small taste of the great 0079 remaster that we've never gotten. BUT, the dubbing is kinda bad, removing most of the cadence and emotions from most of the characters.
The only "Golden Era" Gundam game I have not played is Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam on PS2. Encounters in Space was ok. Not as fun as Fed vs. Zeon (best), the extras in Journey to Jaburo or Zeonic Front (OG rainbow six vibes) the space combat is too arcade like, no 3 dimensional movement but I am a flight game enjoyer so that minor complaint is probably just me lol
This was a formative game for me on the PS2. Between this and the Ace Combat games, you can probably account for 80% of my total time spent playing PS2 games.
Wish we got these in the uk, we only got federation vs zeon we get left out so much when it comes to gundam, we still never got an official release of 08th ms team.

@@JarboeGaming They actually did use it for Never Ending Tomorrow but yeah it sucks they never really used this engine much because it works really great for space battles once you get the controls down.
I remember playing this game when I was around 2-3 at the time. This was a couple years after its initial release (probably around 2008-2009). This game was what got me into Gundam, and I cannot be more thankful thanks to this game. Although this was my very first game I had ever played as well as my first Gundam game, I remember playing some of the missions. Just some memories which I can remember while some are vague, leaving me curious to learn more about this game I played long ago. I've watched playthroughs which makes the whole gameplay very enticing in my own opinion. As someone who's been a fond of this game, I'm glad that this game is getting more recognition from people like you in the U.S. as Gundam wasn't considered to be that enticing to the western audience. I do hope in the near future, if I get a chance, get a hold of this game again and relive my early childhood. This game will always be in my heart.
It's not a PS2 mech game without some healthy jank controls, spiritually in-line with Armored Core. Though this game rocks, I gotta think that high cost space gameplay in Battle Operation feels better. Some of the movement you can do in that makes you feel like Full Frontal piloting the Sinanju, bouncing every way and dodging beam fire. Goes nuts.
If you like this game, you should try Gundam Seed Never Ending Tomorrow for PS2 as well. It's a much jankier reskin of this game that goes through Seed and a ton of its side material. Not nearly as good but it's basically more of this
Have you played the Ps3 version of side stories? The space combat is on Par if not better than this and I think closer to the Gundam the origin feel of space battles. Especially the satisfaction you get from sinking battleships.

Good, great, loved it, share, awesome, amazing, cool, Recommend, rewatch, very good, cowabunga, thumbs up, favorite, perfect for ads, advertisers love this video!
Keep up the good work!
I love using the Vulcans while melee attacking, it doesnt add a lot to the damage but it does add up lol
God, this REALLY makes me want to see a game similar in this fashion but based around the Gundam Thunderbolt series
We need a remake of all the old gundam games. I have so many fond memories of Zeonic Front and some rough ones... White base!
This was a sick game! My friend had a decent collection of PS2 Gundam games and so many of them were fantastic.
It had missions that follow the shows, same dub voice acting, additional scenes, extras and so much
I love that you include the PlayStation 2 bootup and the memory card loading, nice touch. Do you think you'll play or talk about MSG One Year War on PS2?
Eventually, yes! Although Gundam vs Zeta will be the next Gundam title covered.
That is a solid PS2 title that sadly didn't get released in the states. That one you get a section where you take on Ramba Ral invading the white base in a rail style shooting mode Time Crisis esque part of the game that I was like "WOAH, this is cool!"
1:48
"It's a Gundam. The White One!"
Bruh, is there any other Gundam besides The White One in this period of time?
"The White One" is the Gundams nickname.
*The White One* of the Federation.
Actually, theres like 8 lmao
Fun fact, if you are playing vs mode with another person and down their ship/gundam, an intro plays that the dying player cannot skip while the surviving player can still roam. And you can attack the other player while the are stuck in the into, killing them before they can actually use their character. Its a hilarious cheese.
The first Gundam game in my PS2 game collection can't wait to get the others ❤
I remember not liking the unfamiliar controls but this video convinced me to try to give it another chance!
A shame about the coppyright claim, but it's really cool that the main theme of Gundam 3 plays in the game. I'll have to pick this one up at some point, the PS2 really was THE console for mecha games. The best SRW and Macross games also came out on that console.
Old games, they just have the fun aspect nailed perfectly man.
This game looks like it plays very similarly to Char's Counterattack on the PS1
This was my first gundam game
I was so excited to play this as a kid
It was confusing at first just spinning around being lost but I got used to it 😅

Counterpoint: The Zeon commander was a bozo for having his ship follow the White Base in neutral territory instead of doing the British action of waiting outside the borders and firing from there
Others might hear Light Yagami but he’ll always be Kicker Jones to me.
Quatre Raberba Winner for me.
The Latest game with similar combat is Gundam Memories, Gundam Unicorn and Gundam Side Stories but they're Japanese Exclusives.
Suprised you didn’t mention that you can complete that story with an alternate ending if you rank high enough!
One of the best gundam games an the one that realy got me into the gaming side of mobile suits
Its strange, I have no memory of finishing this game but I have memory of me playing that sword fight finale.
This was my first Gundam game and dude it was so good. Nothing has come close since for gundam games to me.
@@Leprechaunlock I'm just finishing up the review of its successor, but honestly, I still prefer this one
This game had one of the best soundtracks EVER!
I had Encounters in Space, but I honestly bounced off of it. Coming off of Gundam vs Zeta Gundam and Zeonic Front, I just couldn't get into it like I did the other games. Watching this gameplay and hearing all the features it has, it might be time to fire up the old emulator and give this one another shot.
"The controls felt a little weird at first,"
That's because you were trained on Earth, and your soul is weighed down by gravity, Feddie.
(Jk I love your content man
It sucks nobody can hear the music to go along with the video cute seens do to "Copyright" BS even though everyone can find the music on UA-cam.
Yep its a damn shame, wonderful tracks, loved them during my playthrough!
That part gave me a good laugh.
This game is awesome, I still have my copy for PS2
i absolutely love this game!
Love the Gundam content man. I'll sub to you.
0:55 - 1:02 For the fellows
I played this game until the laser burnt out the disc as a kid -twice!
Glad someone's giving it its dues
It's not exactly a Gundam only game but I hope you've heard of the Another Century's Episode series. It's a mecha crossover game made by From Software. It has the best Mecha gameplay in my opinion and it really nailed the sense of scale a mecha should have. The third game is the best since it really takes advantage of the crossover aspect, the interactions between Garrod, Renton, and Gainer are all gold. It's also the game where the RX-78-2 is one of the most broken suits in the game, believe it or not.
As for what Gundam's series and suits are in the game. There are
*Mobile Suit Gundam*
- Gundam
- Full Armor Gundam
*Char's Counterattack*
- Nu Gundam/HWS
- Re-GZ/BWS
- Sazabi
- Jagd Doga (Gyunei and Quess)
- Geara Doga (NPC)
- Jegan (NPC)
*G Gundam*
- Burning Gundam
- Master Gundam
*Gundam X*
- Gundam X/Divider
- Gundam DX/DX-Falcon
- Gundam Airmaster
- Gundam Leopard
- Gundam Ashtaron
- Gundam Virsago
- Gundam Ashtaron Hermit Crab
- Gundam Virsago Chest Break
- Daughtress (NPC)
- Dome Bit (NPC)
*Gundam Wing Endless Waltz*
-- Wing Zero Custom
*Gundam Seed*
- Freedom Gundam/Meteor
- Justice Gundam/Meteor
*Extra*
- Perfect Gundam
It's Japanese only (No doubt a fault of the Macross licensing issues) but I hope you check it out. The story is actually fairly simple and isn't really required for the gameplay. It's a fun time regardless, Gamefaqs also has menu and objective translations.
Also forgot to add
*Turn A Gundam*
- Turn A
- Turn X
Honestly don't know how I forgot.
Every cutscenes in this game is actually redone, and remastered, a small taste of the great 0079 remaster that we've never gotten. BUT, the dubbing is kinda bad, removing most of the cadence and emotions from most of the characters.
...I can't believe I never played this game. It looks amazing and a big improvement over JtJ, which I already liked.
Dude i couldnt remember this game until today. I loved it so much.
I actually own a release copy of this game. Still works.
I love this game. I still play it.
I fucking love this game
It's a banger for sure!
this looks amazing
Game looks like a huge improvement to the already good PSX game Char's Counterattack due to the sheer amount of contents added.
This was a formative game for me on the PS2. Between this and the Ace Combat games, you can probably account for 80% of my total time spent playing PS2 games.
Proud to own this great game.
Its definitely on of the best Gundam games in general
I remoney playing both of the gundam games on playstation 2 1
No mention of Thoroughbred having 4 different endings?
Char's Counter Attack on the PS1 was pretty good for it's time
@@MCHuang I've actually got my eyes on this one!
Wish we got these in the uk, we only got federation vs zeon we get left out so much when it comes to gundam, we still never got an official release of 08th ms team.
I remember this game long ago and played it to death. I unlocked every mobile suit including ones from Gundam Wing, Gundam Seed and Mobile Fighter G Gundam. Definitely one of my favorite Gundam games to this day. With that said, l highly recommend Mobile Suit Unicorn Gundam for the PS3 import. It's basically a Encounters in Space successsor with fluid gameplay.
I'm eyeing this one, looks incredible.
Found it at a local Retro game store today. Gotta feeling this is gonna be $40 well spent. 👍
I would love to buy a remaster of this game. I’d pay 40$ for it right now just to play back those fond memories.
Curious if you ever played Zone of the Enders 2 and how the combat sphere controls here compare to it.
Journey to Jabburo is my gold standard for a Gundam game for my personal tastes. Unfortunately, that standard has never been met.
I loved this game, but you can't say it's the only one until you try Gundam The One Year War Ps2. it's a Japanese only one, but it's amazing.
A must have in the ps2 collection i own a working copy ❤
I still can’t understand why they never reused this games engine. It’s infuriating.
Yeah, I would kill for a modern game that plays like a more refined version of this
@@JarboeGaming They actually did use it for Never Ending Tomorrow but yeah it sucks they never really used this engine much because it works really great for space battles once you get the controls down.
Burning Gundam!! That is so cool!!! 4:08
Goes nuts.
Play alot always fun to reply the main campaign after finishing everything since you could actually face against the other ace in the one year war
Do battle assault 3 when you get a chance. I have that game and it is my favorite ps2 Gundam game.
