The Gundam is considerably less resilient in the original novelization (first released as three novellas) known as *Awakening, Escalation, and Confrontation* . Not only is it vulnerable to most standard projectiles (the same ones it shrugs off in the anime), it gets destroyed by a twitchy Dom pilot during the battle of A Bao A Qu (which the Feds lose in this timeline) just before Char wins Amuro over to his cause. And if that's not weird enough, the White Base later teams up with Char to stage a coup against the Zabis.
It's been years since I've watched MSG, but doesn't Amuro spend the first few fights getting smacked around while he's fumbling for the controls? Anime RX-78 shrugged off like 10 game overs worth of damage for game RX-78 in the first few episodes.
"Look at this dorky guy running through the door..." Now I'm picturing a sci-fi security system run by a snarky, disillusioned AI that keeps injecting commentary into all of its readouts. "Enemy Zakus are approaching the base. Christ, look at those codpieces. How insecure _was_ the designer? Anyway, readying defense cannons, since you losers can't do a goddamn thing around here."
The Federation just decided to put an even snarkier HAL 9000 in the defense system core, for some reason. I guess snarky AIs have more processing power?
I can see a haro from the anime being like that ngl. (Haro is that round green robot Amuro modified in the first gundam and they also show up throughout the franchise) In Gundam 00, we had an angry purple haro, why not a snarky one making Mystery Science Theater 3000 style commentary? XD
A Gundam series where the main character is accompanied by an AI and has to constantly curb its snippy attitude and growing bloodlust would be pretty fun. Like a mix of the Zero System from Wing and Durandal from Marathon.
Note: Using the scenes from the anime would likely cost a crapload in licensing costs. After all, this is why the Japanese Tatsunoko vs. Capcom had hand-drawn cutscenes while the Western version had them replaced with stills done by the people at Udon Comics.
We are talking the 90s when licencing was dirt cheap. Before Toonami there was just no demand for it in the USA where the Christian Broadcasting Network got the rights to Onward Leo (Kimba) for pennies on the dollar just to fill air then you had Robotech that was made from three different Anime. Oh and Mobile Suit Gundam for the Sega Saturn that came out in 1995 just ripped clips from the show.
@@Psy500 1. that Sega Saturn game was only released in Japan, thus getting legal permission to get the rights would be easy. This game being covered here was made in the west, making it much more complicated for the rights. 2. International right are a much more complicated thing that that. Even if they were adapting a Japanese game with animated cutscenes created specifically for it, they might not be able to use them in the western release. Again, see what happened to Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. The Japanese version had animated cutscenes made by Tatsunoko for endings, but the western version of the game had them replaces with stills done by Udon Comics. 3. It honestly might have been cheaper to make these FMV sequences because licensing can be that complicated and pricey. Hell, part of the reason the AB Group created a separate Canadian dub of Dragonball Z was because it would be cheaper to make their own dub with the Canadian VAs that simply licensing the dub made by Funimation.
According to their website, which you can read, they actually paid to licence anime footage in the US and EU before deciding against using it because they Eastern rights were expensive and it meant they wouldn't be able to release there if the western launch went well (also where most Pippin users were, probably why they targeted the pippin). The anime footage was cheap enough for them to get the license to use it and then not do so and it not be a major affect on their budget. But the price of it in Japan did force their hand, so I guess you're unintentionally half right.
Either that or they chose to translate it so everyone in Japan could believe that we f*baa*ed up their franchise so horribly and appreciate the original anime that much more.
Eh, it's a little better than that. At least the Mobile Suits look accurate enough, even if they're terribly animated and technically inaccurate. Noah Bright also looks about what I would expect him to look like in live action, although his acting could be better.

To be completely fair the Japanese pronunciation of Char's name is Shar just like they do here. Literally everything else isn't in line with the Japanese pronunciations so I doubt that was on purpose though
Zak and Jion are actually how the Japanese pronounce Zaku and Zeon but Tomino and the official romanizations have made it clear that that's just due to Japanese pronunciation rules and they're intended to be Zaku and Zeon.
6:57 Funny story, as a kid I had to write an essay on a media I watched or read, and I wanted to do it on Gundam. So I talked about Zeon, but the teacher thought it was Zion and thought that Gundam was a racist show, and apparently I got Gundam banned from my school 🤔
Well, he wasn't wrong, in a way. The original romanization in the 80's *WAS* "Zion". It wasn't meant to be racist, it was just meant to have vague religious connotations (kind of like how the captain of the ship carrying the future of humanity is named "Noah"). Western religious issues weren't/aren't topical in Japan or hot button issues. Instead it's more like how western writers use names from ancient Greek or Norse mythology.
Would have been even worse had they thrown in an extra prompt to make you stop the car to hit the foot of the Gundam, but if you didn't, it would step on your car instead.

@shawnfields2369 Destiny had potential at first, but then executive meddling in an attempt to appease fans caused the plot to suddenly shift back to Kira as the main protagonist, while Shinn, Destiny's original protagonist, took on the role of a villain. The heavy amount of executive meddling was made worse by the fact that the lead writer was turning in scripts late due to a combination of severe medical issues and depression. This, combined with a ton of tension between production staff (VAs included) basically led to the plot turning into a trainwreck in slow motion. I think "Zak" is the correct pronunciation of Zaku, japanese phonetic can't have words ending in a consonant except when it is a "n", so a "u" is placed next to the consonant. And with the Zeon/Jeanne problem i think it's due to the confusion between the two translitteration systems, in the Hepburn system zi=zi, but in the Katsuragi system zi=ji. I think the translators here translated directly from a text without ever bothering watching the anime to hear the proper pronunciation.
Yes it is true that words cannot end in japanese by a consonant (exept for ん), but this doesn’t prove anything at all. MS like DOM (ドム) and the Gogg (ゴッグ) are dropping the u sound at the end and that’s why you don’t say domu nor goggu in english for instance. In the Zaku’s case, the u is still present (and it was written as such since the 80’) so you pronounce the u sound and no, Zak isn’t the correct way to say it It’s just a typical case of "no one involved in this game bothered to check"

XD
'Alert, though if the sirens and the burning buildings weren't enough of an indicator to you incompetent apes I have no hope for the Federation.'

Intresting
According to their website, which you can read, they actually paid to licence anime footage in the US and EU before deciding against using it because they Eastern rights were expensive and it meant they wouldn't be able to release there if the western launch went well (also where most Pippin users were, probably why they targeted the pippin).
The anime footage was cheap enough for them to get the license to use it and then not do so and it not be a major affect on their budget. But the price of it in Japan did force their hand, so I guess you're unintentionally half right.
and did you know, they released this in Japan as well?
They got the original cast to dub over the thing.
So even Bandai of Japan didn't care.
Either that or they chose to translate it so everyone in Japan could believe that we f*baa*ed up their franchise so horribly and appreciate the original anime that much more.

@@SOMEGUY7893 yeah but Char is still using French pronunciation is most dubs, being named after singer.
If the mech is going to be that delicate, they might as well have made it a mass produced GM who provides support to Amuro.

But overall I would say it's very good.
TL;DR, the production of SEED Destiny was a disaster, and this ended up reflecting back onto the show itself.

Ahh so that's why the first Gundam series didn't show up in America before Gundam wing
So in America the u was silent and in Japan they pronounced it.
Huh...with Dragon Ball Super its the other way around. (Zamasu)
@@CGB_CrashSo, with Super it's just pronounced "Zamas", and not "Zamasu", then?
Yes it is true that words cannot end in japanese by a consonant (exept for ん), but this doesn’t prove anything at all. MS like DOM (ドム) and the Gogg (ゴッグ) are dropping the u sound at the end and that’s why you don’t say domu nor goggu in english for instance. In the Zaku’s case, the u is still present (and it was written as such since the 80’) so you pronounce the u sound and no, Zak isn’t the correct way to say it
