Sad how brilliance can get overlooked when the timing is not right.
IDk if that's true, but given a few decades of club and so forth, feels pretty accurate. Not quiiiiite the right venue/theme night, but I'll be damned if it didn't pop. Very wide x-section of subcultures and niches really into it. Weird but solid. Like '01 when Gorillaz put out "Clint Eastwood". Another club night, industrial-goth Wed, and they play it, and once more, ton of rando punks, skaters, occasional head banger, rivet head, goth, or local hip hop kid were all happy AF. Goldfrapp's a little more accessible, but it's so cool when you see those moments. Like bottled lightning, hard to repeat.

I think it's because excellent pop music is difficult to make, since it has so much going against it i.e. getting too repetitive, lyrical vacancy, getting overplayed on radio stations etc. Spent months listening to the electropop hits from the mid 2000s and 2010s and most of them are really just god-awful trash. Only a handful of artists like Goldfrapp can pull off really amazing electropop/synthpop.
