  • Sometimes the worst car on the road is exactly what you need. Why did the CAR WIZARD 🧙‍♂️ buy this 1996 Dodge RAM 3500 with a V10? What does it plan to do with it?

The Dodge truck V-10 was a very solid performer. Yes it’s mileage sucked, but it made up for it with great reliability!

Technically, you do have a 4 wheel drive...they are just all on one axle :)

The V10s actually had more tow capacity than the Cummins, their fuel economy was their biggest weakness (duh). Now with diesel being more expensive, diesel engines being costly to maintain, the new diesel trucks getting worse mileage thanks to the new emissions regs since 2007, and new trucks in general being priced to the moon, the old V10 trucks suddenly look less daunting.

My grandpa has had a '96 Dodge 3500 with V10, 4WD and 5spd on his farm for working in the field since it was new. That truck has worked it's whole life and never skips a beat, it just runs! Great find Wizard.

Magnum v10 is one of the best, most reliable, and torquey gas engines for towing of all time. They run forever.

My Dad told me years ago, "You can buy a newer expensive car and get great gas mileage, or you can buy an old car for less and spend the money you save on fuel." In our state, a newer truck would also cost a lot more to register the license plates each year. Buying that beast was brilliant, and a perfect choice. Thanks for sharing!

Making me feel good about my 1999.5 F250 SD 7.3 I bought at the bottom of the market in 2008/2009. It's been a great truck. Has 205k miles now. Paid $8150 for it which included $650 for a new matching color 8' take off bed. I plan on keeping it forever.

I have a soft spot for this truck. I’m 24 and learned to drive stick in. 99 3500 with the Cummins and a 6 speed transmission in the hay fields. It had to be the easiest way to learn just because it was damn near impossible to stall it.

I recently purchased a 1998 Ram 2500 V10 4x4 Quadcab with an 8ft bed. 118k miles and I love it (it's not my daily). I upgraded the steering box and added a steering stabilizer. Mint interior and no cracked dash (seem more common in the US than Canada). I paid $6500 CAD and I am 3rd owner. Minimal surface rust on the arches but cab corners all good.

I bought a '96 Ram 2500 4wd with the V10 back in 2008, which was the last time gas went nuts. Paid $2500 for it because NOBODY wanted it. Was a great truck!

It’s something about older trucks that are so simple but yet timeless. I use to do hotshot with a 2018 Ram 3500. I did like how well it towed and thankfully I never had emission system issues but I can definitely understand why some of the guys want to go to older diesels. Even in the big rig world some of the guys want pre 2000 engines.

It really shows that in the past 5-10 years fuel efficiency and emissions standards prompted manufacturers to get into a realm of way too much complexity to meet them. It's this awkward period where electric is just starting to be ready for prime time and gas is being pushed beyond reasonable efficiencies.

Earlier this year I sold my ‘02 F350 7.3 Dually with 86k miles for $39,000. It was probably one of the nicest 7.3 Powerstrokes left in the country.

The Vortec 8100 is a good option too. I got my GMC 2500 at a good price and intend on keeping it.

Completely agree, when you factor in the diesel is more than $1.00 gallon more expensive the slightly better fuel efficiency is no longer an factor. I prefer the 8.1 Vorteck big block but the Dodge V10 is also a solid choice.

I’ve been a car/truck enthusiast for YEARS and I never knew a v10 was an option in this generation of dodge. Who knew!
