I have a 98’ Dakota with a 5.9 and I’m in love with it. This thing just never dies. 200k+ miles!
200k lol Toyota's hit 500k
@@gokusantoyota5222 My 97 ram with the 360 has 434k. soo yea your toyota really isnt that special. well I guess its the only truck that can reliably fold in half.
@@gokusantoyota5222 but do you have a v8, and the ram torque ?
@@gokusantoyota5222 Those year rams and dakotas can easily last as long as a Toyota any day. Coming from a Jdm guy
@@gokusantoyota5222 exception, not the rule, as with anything else jackass. There are million mile vehicles from every major manufacturer at this point.
6:30 Proper respect to Wizard for not littering - and to the officer who didn't make his muffler falling off an issue!
Amazingly rust free for a Kansas truck of that age!
Just replaced my 01 Ram 5.2 with a 00 Ram 8.0, had to do it though, the added power of the V10, woodgrain and leather and factory keyless entry sold me into making the upgrade, decided to refresh the 5.2 Ram and give it to my dad.
They aren’t worth much in money but they can hold their own in value for the use they give.
Got a 273k mile 2001 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.2L V8 that was very abused by the state fire department. Rides good, carries a lot of stuff, doesn't make me sad when it gets damaged off-roading, and is cheap and easy to wrench on. That's the best you can ask for in a truck.
Well wizard, not much of a surprise with a pic of it in thumbnail and it written in the title, LOL
At least it wasn't clickbait with a black outline of a vehicle in the thumbnail..
Wizard is such a great dude that clickbait isn't even in his wheelhouse
@@svenskfox Not true. They've done clickbait thumbs in the last with masked-off cars with question marks on them.
@@nickmotsarsky4382 Okay okay but certainly not as bad as some other (unnamed) channels lol
@@nickmotsarsky4382 I would also say his "clickbait" vids are actually worth watching. There's nothing he suggests in the thumbnail that doesn't happen in the vids, which is the worst kind of bait.
The headliner is worth doing to avoid the dust/matter flying around the interior and getting into your eyes, nose and mouth. Also, the aftermarket fiberglass dashes work very well if you are ever interested in replacing it, I have one in my 1999. These trucks are surprisingly inexpensive for nearly everything as far as parts and restoration, and I believe they may fall into a classic status due to that and their unique, trend setting styling when they were produced.
I understand the need for the utility of the truck, but I found that the convenience comes at a pretty steep price. Each year between licence and insurance you pay and pay. Now consider that almost almost the same utility can be had with a nice utility trailer.
Let's say you had something like a Crown Vic. You can tow almost as much but the licence and insurance os going to be much cheeper as well as the money to buy in the first place.
The LA blocks were probably the best engine Chrysler ever produced. The 318 in my grandpa’s 86’ D150 went over 400,000 miles and was still running when it was sold. He even had a LA V6 in his 97’ Dakota went 325,000 miles until a drunk driver ran into it.
Nice truck, kind of starting to dig those older Dodge RAMs again. Definitely remember growing up and seeing the new style it was impressive. Short bed looks sexy.
Good deal. This is a fine beater truck that is both comfortable and cheap. No tears if it gets a few bumps which is the right way to treat a truck. These new nearly $100,000 trucks are mobile offices and are absolutely glorious, but..... it’s absolutely nerve wracking to use them as intended. My beat up old Dodge, (it coulda been a Chevy or Ford or whatever) gets used to beat the holy Hell out of the world and I tear stumps out of the ground and get up to many tasks that rub a bit of paint off and give it a few scraps and scars.
Wish I kept? An absolutely worthless 1991 Mercury Capri XR2 for which I had collected a ton of collectables, articles, options, & promotional materials.
All it "needed" was paint. I had brought the 32000 mile car from total neglect & basket case status to great condition.
But the 1991 XR2s have an inherent crankshaft pulley defect at which the bolt can break off the tip of the crankshaft. There is no known complete corrective repair for such a low production car.
Sold in 2007 & still miss it & its unique oddness. 😢
I have a 98 Ram with the mighty 5.2. It is a beast, its just the plenum gasket broke every few years on mine, so I got the Hughes Air Gap and got rid of the problem entirely. They can pull damn near anything as long as you aren't planning on getting there too fast.
Go ahead and fix the dash and headliner. She will appreciate it in the end !
Yeah, that foam is just going to rain down over time. The dash wasn't hacked for the stereo. That's how they curl up when they fail.
Those Gen 2 Rams were great trucks! I was spoiled though, had a 2001 2/4 ton quad cab short bed with a Cummins.
The wizard: now that I got "repositioned here" I can finish my story
Best line I've ever heard
I like the Car Wizard's more dry literal approach to these videos. Isn't trying to be an actor, just a guy getting filmed by his wife.

Hey, keep it clean.
@@AustinRBa I get it now. My bad.
When you get tires don’t forget to put the rim in the bed back on the left front, as soon as I saw the off style rim I was hoping the matching one was still there
Nice Ram truck Wizard. I had one and was my first truck but with the 3.9 v6 in manual, It had nothing even a / c and radio ..work truck, the wheels were steel star style with rings and center caps chromed, I Miss that truck after this begun my love with pick up trucks ✌
I've got a 97 sitting in my yard. Unsafe to move from all the rust. The motor and drive train was never an issue. Just cant believe how badly this generation of trucks RUST. Really surprised you found a nice one. That truck must of been kept in a garage most of its life.
If it ever does die, a fella might could get another Rolls engine.
I have an 03 Avalanche with the 4L60e and the G80 rear end. Its been a great truck all these years it has close to 220k miles. That's cool you used to have one!
Ur gonna love that 2gen dodge i have one and it has 300k miles
I bet you regret getting rid of that Caddy that you were fawning over. That was a bad decision. You should have kept it. Judging by what they did to that truck, the new owners don't sound like the type who will respect the Caddy and keep it pristine and original.
Almost NO rust... that's actually amazing. Usually those are all rusted out regardless where they came from. Also hilarious how they all have that tear in the drivers seat in the same spot on the edge.
Tea Time with Max Not true, I’ve done many of these trucks here in California with no rust issues at all! All vehicles will rust where they salt the roads in winter it’s just a matter of time.
I have a 2001 4wd (bought it 12 years ago). Water pump, coolant leak behind timing cover, and blend door, that's all I've had to do. Dash was in pieces and clear coat peeling - harsh sunlight here in NM.
Those Magnum engines do run forever I have a modded 5.9L in my '70 Duster making about 450 hp and the entire short block is as it came from the junkyard just with new rod bearings. Truck it came out of was totally beat to heck.
It was 84° F in Kansas three weeks ago.....?!
In NYS 60°f no snow two years now.
Those trucks ruined here by road salt .Rotted bad.Ball joints tiny on them and transmission weak.318 excellent engine.
Nice truck!
Do ' interior detailing' and ' super cleaning engine bay videos' those will get views .
got a 01 360 and got 292k on it and my valve covers leak other than that strong truck.
that valve cover gasket isn't hard at all to fix if I remember when I had mine all it is is 13mm and a few vaccum lines ziptied out of the way
Any used car you buy is gonna need work. That's why whenever you buy a used car your should always have $800-$1000 to fix whatever is wrong with it.
But you already have two trucks; the '62 Chevy C30 and the '81 GMC Brigadier.
i mainly regret getting rod of the old 95 suburban i had when i moved out to ohio, though it might have a head gasket leak, turned out to be fixed by just a very thorough coolant flush/cleanout. but it lead me down the path of the crappy aveo and dealership experience i had, that lead me to the $425/mo cruze.
the cruze has determined my familys curse of red cars does exist, and it was not the chevy badge. as i had a redish chevy astro that crapped out in about 2 months and the aveo was red, while my first truck and the suburban were gmc badged. we just dont have good luck with red cars.
You got a solid work truck out of the deal. Those kids are going to destroy that Caddy in under 2 weeks.
Fundamentally the Ram is is a much better vehicle. Seems like you saved it from further neglect and it's much more suited to your needs. I don't imagine that Caddy is going to fair very well with the new owners.
Don't worry, the Caddy will repay it's new owners with kindness. 😉
Them headlights look really milky in the video.
Polish them is the cheapest way
A good sanding and a polish, probably easy for Jr. Mint
toothpaste and a cotton flapper wheel 20 min job
Nice truck! First thing i'd do is wash the underside.... i'd not be able to resist myself....
It's hard to find a half way decent standard cab these days. Nice truck!!!
It'd be super weird to not be in the rust belt and see a clean one of these
So many crew cab trucks now, seems like that’s the majority of trucks on the road now. So this regular cab looks kind of odd to me now, and that’s a shame. Anyway, nice trade, Wizard!
Honestly, it's probably because of the horrible experience I've had with my 2003 GMC Sierra, but I'd rather have ANYTHING that isn't a pickup at this point.
To the question at the end, I regret getting rid of my 1998 Honda Prelude.
i had a white 98 prelude 5sp was spotless such a clean car burnt oil glad i got rid of it. it was a fun car i have a 05 miata now. I like rwd better.
When your regret is getting rid of a 22 year old base model prelude...
@@noelebbert9322 Mine was White Diamond Pearl and burned oil as well. Still, the shriek of the H22 was amazing. I now have a 13 BMW 328i, so I know what you mean about RWD.
I had a '97, the one weak point on these trucks is the radiators, I had to replace mine twice. Minor, compared to some of the issues on some other trucks!
Mrs car wizard needs to have her own show.
Next video- Ms wizard said go ahead and change the dash and headliner while your at it! 😂
I love the magnums just got me a 2002 Dodge Dakota 3.6 v6, even rebuild a 96 engine in a weekend
Its a nice truck. I've owned mine since it was new in 2002 and still have it. Its my first vehicle too. Only problem is better check your ball joints twice a year. Every year or every other year if I'm lucky, I replace a ball joint.
Yeshua Man lol yeah they love eating ball joints, the one problem I’ve run into with the magnum is oil getting into the air intake, I’d recommend a oil catch canto save on the carbon build up on the valves and throttle body
LMC truck parts FTW on that dash.
Good deal, especially as Jr Mint will fit it to Wizard specks.
Well if you can't have a Masarati, get Grandpa's Ram.
There was a recall long ago for some of the seatbelts easily unlatching when in an accident. You should get that checked.
In terms of half tons I agree Chevy makes better trucks but in my opinion Dodge/Ram makes a better 3/4 or 1 ton truck….. can’t beat the simplicity of the Cummins
Not big fan of Chrysler/dodge products but ive owned a dodge with a 318 i do like those engines but other than that the transmission and the rear end woreout prematurely
I saw your youtube mentor Tyler on network TV this morning on site in your garage...you should have spoke up $$pay scale..ha,ha
Hey Car Wizard who do you think about steam cleaning an engine? I would like to see a video on cleaning your old engine!
I have a love for these Rams, my dad had a 95, Bright red and loaded. A lot of fun
Plenum gasket may crawl out at some point.
My 95 is running and running and running and I love it
I appreciate you keeping it real and uncut I was thinking Dodge Durango or Chevy Suburban for taxes and I think I made up my mind at 318 durango
Shoulda preserved that STS and bought the truck outright. The STS is a classic.
Thanks for not doing a cheesy promotion for hair loss prevention or some other nonsense like your boy Hoovie did in his last video.
I uh, don't think the Car Wizard would be the right pitch man for hair loss prevention...jus sayin.
Grateful nonetheless
Thanks for not clickbaiting us in your thumnbail with a black outline of a vehicle with some question marks on it..
This is crazy, i just started looking for one of these. Just something i can use to haul yard stuff around when i need it but then have that v8 rwd smokey stuff when i feel the need.
You did well Wizard - those Sevilles are "sales proof"
LMC truck makes a brand new 10 yr warranty dashboard for 273.00 you’re welcome
You should do a exhaust video of this truck. I love the old 318s.
Why did you let that gorgeous show quality STS go to some teenager to beat to hell?????
LMC truck has a hard plastic replacement dash for $200
I thought Mrs Wizard had a Range Rover Discovery . Why would she need the truck ??
Needs new shocks too..... 129k. They are worn out
My 93 dodge dakota with the same engine had the exact same leak.
If you only need a truck five times a year, why don't you just rent one?
I thought that was the longest drumroll ever. Turns out it was the Dodge lol
Wizard, you can order your new head gasket now for that Dodge.
318 engine. Keep the oil changed, it's as tough as a cummins.
I thought you were restomoding a old truck you could use.
those damn teenage boys! HAHAHAHAHA
Mrs. Wizard, thanks for the improved lighting under the cars. It's a lot easier to see stuff now.
I just fixed that same timing cover gasket leak issue on my 1988, pre-magnum 5.2. Threw a new timing set in for good measure. 356,000 miles, runs like a top.
Barry damn
Nice!. I got a 97 360 still running strong at 430k miles. Great motors.
Just bought one 180 miles
Two things 1.The 5.2(318) and the 5.9(360) suffer from intake gasket blowing out on the plenum. Hughes engines makes a great repair kit used it on my truck.
2. I know for the 98 and up trucks lmc truck makes a replacement dash. I think the 94 to 97 trucks your still junkyard hunting.
That is a beautiful 2nd gen, clean for its age. Sounds great too!
Wizard: *Buys a 60's C30*
Also Wizard: I need a truck!
They serve two different purposes.
Its getting a RR engine it will have a lot of down time.
You figure everyone that gets a rolls takes the engine out and drops a SB Chevrolet v8 in it because its reliable and cheap to repair and makes great power with little work.
Now that being said it is kind of cool ro pop the hood on a old shop truck and people will go what the F---- it has a RR engine, perfect for a mechanic shop
Ones for play and one is for work. I wouldn't want to put all that work into the old 60s truck to have it get dented up and beat up.
My 99 Dakota with the Magnum 5.2 has 253,000 miles in it. I've given it plenty of abuse and nehlect and it just keeps going.
I love these “Twister” era Dodges..... my dad had a ‘94 Ram 2500 4X4 with the Cummins 6BT issued to him as a work truck, even though it wasn’t his, we still loved it all the same... hell he even let me take it to my senior prom, why not, it was as long as a limo!
Everything is a good trade for wizard since he knows how to repair it himself
Time is money

Yeah I'm have a hard time believing trading the Caddy for this abused DODGE was a good move.
@@iSlandeRon If this is what you call abused, I'm wondering what term would be used when talking about my dodge.

Probably enough with one DeathStar in stock.
Sweet truck!
Won’t you be embarrassed to drive a truck that ain’t 25 feet long! 😂
Don’t get me wrong I like the old truck.
Seems people lost sight of what a trucks for. Not to SHOW OFF!
Insecure people.
Great buy Wizard, at work I use to drive a 99 over 300k
on the odometer it refuses to die. Very strong trucks.
GM cars have a battery cut-off after about twenty minutes. They have had that feature for years.
Thank you. Now I know why the interior lights on my '96 Cutlass Supreme SL still went off despite having the doors open. I thought a door switch was faulty
There was a commercial about it. The young couple was parked because "the battery was dead." The cop was like nope.
Terri Bel Bliss I thought it was because they were shit
My wife's old 1996 Pontiac Grand Am DID NOT have this.
yes, almost ALL makes have that feature, unless you has a faulty sensor that keeps waking up the computer...
I live in the country and don’t have a truck. I bought a 5‘x10‘ utility trailer with a 5‘ tall tailgate that also serves as a ramp. It cost me $1600 with a 3500lbs axle. No insurance $28.25 for tabs and can sit for months without anything going wrong with it. I can tow it with my Durango. It’s a lot lower and easier to load than a pickup for sure. No maintenance required besides repacking the bearings every couple years. Just some food for thought.
If that exhaust falling off happened to me I’d be laughing about that for hours!
Stil driving my 97 ram with the 5.2 and same color but a club cab body.
98 Ram..223k. can't remember last time I did a time up..lol can't kill it!
👍 99 Ram running strong 180k bought it brand new off the lot in 99 not the best on gas lol but I love that truck

The 5.2 in my 97 Dakota beater has 230k miles, and despite being abused like hell by the previous owner, it runs like a top. Just needed a new starter, and grounds cleaned up, and it's been super reliable. She's THIRSTY though.
Can’t wait for more on this truck!! I have a 99.. !! It had 300,000 miles before a valve spring broke and dropped a valve. Still ran good on 7 cylinders! Now it has a rebuilt engine.
Everyone bashes the hell out of the Chrysler and Dodge, but occasionally they really make a fantastic product. The Challenger, Charger, Durango, and the 300 are all FANTASTIC vehicles and about the only cars I would consider buying new.
I just bought a 2000 Durango same color same engine with 216,000 mi. Runs, shifts and drives great! Needs 2WD front wheel bearings (passenger side makes some noise) but that's it. Paid $900 for it at auction. Good inside and out.
I've got a very similar truck myself! Mines a 2001, was originaly a fleet truck so it's white with a vinyl bench seat and a plain stereo, 5.2 2wd. So far the only issue I've had is front wheel bearings (which are non adjustable on 2000-2001 models) and both outer tie rods. Great trucks!
Wise choice! I am age 64 and have an actual 50 years hands on experience as a mechanic. I have mention y 98 Dodge ram extended cab several times in your comments. I love it and will eep it for as long as I live. Those 318 V8 engines in these 98s (94 to 03) aare actually your ,id 1960s LA Chrysler V8s.and the long block assembly is actually the same, so you actually have a 60s vehicle. They are better than your ford and gmc and chevrolet trucks. That Dodge is a truck you need to keep. Keep the rust off of it and it will always be worth anything you have to spend on it . I also own a cadillac that is the 89 brougham, but it is one of the good cadillacs with that cast iron long block 307 oldsmobile V8 and those are good forever engines also. That 93 cadillac you had is something I call a nightmare car though. Ill keep my 98 dodge ram extended cab for LIFE though.. I call it my tiger truck because I think the front looks like a tiger
Had a 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a dodge 5.2 that I sold with 450k miles on it and I still see it driving around town. The best thing we ever did to it was upgrade theninjextors to mustang injectors with 4 holes. My mileage doubled (14 to 28) and had better throttle response . HIGHLY recommend and would make a great video
