    An important thing for me was, while discipline and getting yourself to practice even when you don't want to is super important, you also need to let yourself give in and not practice every once in a while or you are going to burn out. I spent the last like 4 months with very structured practice with like 3-4 hours a day broken up throughout the day to prepare for dci auditions. I didn't let myself skip pretty much any of the practice sessions and by the end of the year I got so burnt out. Give yourself a break every now and then

      How were your auditions? I've recently been very interested in join DCI but IDK what im preping for. (I'm just a first year. Considering Open Class)

      @@dojoishere1825 It was my first audition camp so I didn't know what to expect and I thought the bar was gonna be much higher than it was (I expected everyone to be perfect pretty much but everyone there was just band kids like me) which fed a lot into my burnout. I auditioned for the Mandarins front ensemble and almost everything went much better than expected! I got a callback and will be at their next camp next weekend to hopefully secure a contract.
      I would absolutely encourage going for an open class corps to start out, you will learn a ton, it's cheaper, and it'll be a good way to start in the activity. I started out with the Boise Gems last year (a new sound sport group) and the instructor there really helped me polish my ability. If I didn't join the Boise gems then I wouldn't have had a chance at the mandarins all things considered. I again can not recommend open class or doing sound sport enough!

    This video has taught me alot! You go really into detail on each skill. The discipline thing is something I really need to work on. When you said "as soon as you feel the feeling of oh I don't feel like doing whatever, that when you do it" this really is going to help me strengthen my discipline strength and is going to in the long run help me out a ton. Your channel is probably my favorite right now on youtube because of the diverse type of content all revolving around the thing I love, trumpet playing. From the educational part to the funny skits, keep it up your killing it!

    I am in both band and chorus, and I can definitely see the solfedge and singing thing. I always get the songs that we sing/play stuck in my head, and that helps me enormously to learn the song and just how it goes

    I’m a small little 10th grade alto sax that got put in the highest level band and jazz band and these tips are what I try to do as much as I can. I love humming and fingering my music like after class and people judge me for it but it genuinely helps me out with hard rhythms or confusing lines. These tips are very good for any player and sort of gave me a reality check. Thanks man ❤

    This was great info! Before picking the clarinet back up again, I actually started doing some choir. I think understanding solfège better will be a good first step for me that I've never thought about. The trust thing as well, especially with the high G (concert A, since I play clarinet). I feel when that sound cannot come out is when I worry about it the most, even though I know I can play it. Great info, and thanks for all the funny, but knowledgeable content! Oh, and new subscriber now, even though I'm not a trumpet bro. 😜

    I personally really struggle with remembering all the techniques I need to use during practice: breathing, tongue position, etc. Do you have any advice for keeping it all straight?

    • @henwill8
      @henwill8 6 місяців тому

      I'd say sit down and make a list of every technique thing you want to work, then for a couple practice sessions pick one of them that you want to do and before every single rep and periodically through the rep focus on and set the correct technique. Do this for as many practice sessions as it takes to become muscle memory. Then move on to the next technique thing and do it again. You can also work on multiple techniques at once if you have the mental focus for it but if technique is compromised then go back to focusing on one.

    Love the singing tip! Ask nearly any professional jazz musician (Patrick Bartley, Wycliffe Gordon, Benny Benack III, to name a few) and they will always talk about how singing elevates your playing.

    That's still one I already kind of do when I'm trying to learn certain pieces of music all i really have to do is just find the pitch of each note In My Head. In in match them up with the pitch. I play on my trumpet and then once I do that. It makes it so much easier to learn. Other notes in that piece so like. 7 nation army. I have learned in a few different keys. Just because i'd took what I heard and put it into other types of note. Interested looked to find where I could place them and make it still sound right or the Shubert Serenade, that 1 is 1 that it took a good bit for me to really learn. But I learned it by route by hearing it and then placing the notes where they fit

    • @jacksonwilkes665
      @jacksonwilkes665 6 місяців тому

      In discipline. I already work a lot with because I do parking band now. The discipline I need for what you're saying is probably slightly different. But hey i've at least got the basics for that part of it

      @@gameparade2183 i spent the latter half of my junior year cleaning my section so i became principal percussionist and second chair, in choir tenors r rare so that was pretty easy
      And i’m taking an ez senior year so i have room for everything
      Choir i picked up easy
      Band and orchestra i practice nearly everyday to improve my chops even tho orchestra music tends to be easier than low band, and i even taught a euphonium to play it in 5 minutes and he was like, “is that it?”

    As a trumpet player who has only been playing for 3 years what do you think can help me play really high notes with a good sound?

    • @xsparrow5175
      @xsparrow5175 6 місяців тому +3

      range comes with time, and some people have the chops to play high notes while others need a ton of practice. If you can, ask someone with a music teacher for their range exercises and practice those maybe once every other week. make sure that you're not cramming the trumpet in your face and use your abdomen muscles to push the air out as fast as possible. Also, remember to rest your face as much as you play because it'll help your chops last longer without getting tired. My teacher recommended to relax my lips by just buzzing them by relaxing them and blowing.

      It definitely comes with time and effort, and dedication. This is my fifth year on trumpet, and another thing that’s really helped me has been talking to my upperclassmen and director about how to play better in general. Try focusing on the good sound and rhythms first, and then work your way up to the high notes. Hope this helps!

    Range isn’t that much of a big deal,
    One of my alts, trombone, i can barely play the regular octave which is a huge weakness for me, the 4th seat trombone in the highest band whom is also one of the best vocalists in the school, his range is a minor 3rd below mine on trombone
    I still can’t play a piece but he can play at the same lvl as the other 3 trombones and he’s playing the same music as them exactly for solos so he is far from bad, i suck so that’s why i say range doesn’t matter(i’m also a perfect 4th below the best trombone)
