Circular breathing is not difficult, but I think it's easier to learn when you are a kid. I've never had a hard time teaching this to a 12 year old. Adults are a different story because their muscle memory is a lot more set, their habits are a lot more ingrained. I learned when I was 12 or 13 and now, over 50 years later, it is still a part of my playing. I think that it should be considered part of the fundamentals of playing. It is valuable in embouchure development, breath control and is musically useful in phrasing. Good video! (I'm a trumpet player, btw)

I push my tummy out to pull in air to circular breathe on the piccolo. It is very effective for sustained trills, especially when they are played softly or moderately softly. I also had an etude in college where I was to breathe after every single eighth note, they were all eighth notes. This taught me how to get bits of air quickly, so useful in staccato passages. I think Flight of the Bumblebee would be the ultimate test for circular breathing.

hello fellow flute player, I’m also a flute player and I kind of need help. When I’m playing the flute I have to blow air directly from my lungs to make a sound, but when I try to make a sound on my flute by using the air stored in my cheeks, it’ll never make one. So I’m wondering if it’s possible to play notes by solely relying on the air stored in my cheeks or if I just suck at playing instruments

    My advice:
1)Empty your lungs to the point where you want to naturally inhale
2)Instead of taking air from your lungs to fill your cheeks, open your mouth (like a fish) and 'grab' the air.
    3) Use the air in your cheeks to push quickly and inhale like you would normally at the same time
For me, the problem was I needed to focus on too many things and I wouldn't realize I was exhaling when I needed to save that air
Repeat that in continuous intervals. When that seems easier, then try to use lung-air to make bubbles.

Mike: thank you for posting your version of explaining circular breathing. One of the things I love about your videos is the articulate and clear way you explain things, describing as much as words can. Clearly, this isn't the only video on circular breathing on UA-cam, just in my opinion the best.
Allow me to explain what I mean by the clarity and breath (no pun intended) of your narrative. You were the first person I witnessed who explained the transition back to pulmonary (as opposed to cheek muscle) and normal "energizing" of the clarinet with air. Your use of the word "dovetail" made me appreciate how this is done. It would almost be as if two air pressure meters, one capturing cheek air pressure, and another capturing pulmonary switch from the former to the latter in such a way as to keep constant the combine air pressure of the two--like 2 light bulbs in a room that dim and illuminate at perfectly inverse rates so as to keep the room's lumens static.
This has helped me enormously. I'm no expert yet, but you've given me a much needed missing foundation in my conceptualization of the process, especially its finale.
    Bravo!

  • @jimscimonetti1457

Really?!!! 16 people gave this wonderful video a thumbs down? Sheeech. It's a thought room.
I have marginal circular breathing skills, but I have been working on it simply because I seem to need to do this more and more lately since I am called upon to play very long sustained notes on the bigger woodwinds (Bass clarinet and Bari sax) mainly. It sounds awful in the orchestra and they are depending on you to hold a long sustained low note and you run out of gas somewhere in the tie and break the note.
Thank you for posting another great video. I sincerely love your playing and your expert tips.

TheJoeyCheng it can work for trombone, baritone, and other ones to. Euphonium and tuba are the hardest because the bells are bigger and because the tubes gradually get larger=more air is used to play. If u can do it on the tuba, your a god. The trombone, baritone and trumpet are easier because the bells are smaller. I'm in 8th grade and it took me a month to get it down fully and I play the tenor sax and euphonium. It's harder to do it on lower notes so I would recommend doing on higher notes first and than gradually go lower by a couple of notes after each week. I used this and helped me learn it faster and easier

UPDATE GUYS, I learnt this for a bit and what not, so last yr I was in beginner band ahah and they do breathing exercises and stuff, so they were like 'let’s see who can hold a concert B flat the longest'
And I was like 'yay less gooooo' so I ended up using it and was the last one going, and the conductor looked at me and everyone was hearing me sniff and breath (cuz I couldn’t do it quietly) and was like 'WOAH SHE BREATHING AND PLAYING SAME TIME' (ahahha) and then I died out, and the conductor was like 'woah, does anybody know what she was doing? What it’s called?' And one of the saxophones yelled out 'CHEATING!' HAHHAHA. (Keep in mind we were all yr sevens, all about 2? months into playing so I was horrible at circular breathing but now I’m in a higher band :D)

I knew about square breathing, but after watching this video and reading the comments, I now know about circular breathing and triangle breathing.
Im excited to learn about pentagonal and hexagonal breathing next.
And then I’ll move on to 3D and learn cylindrical and cubic breathing

As someone beginning to learn the duduk (an instrument that does actually need circular breathing), thank you so much for this video! Very helpful.

I have tried this for years, again and again. This video helped so much. I swear I tried one minute (very slowly) and it worked. Finally! Thank you so much!

Thanks for your video. I think this is the best tutorial on YT for circular breathing, very straight forward, simple language, great bubble blowing example. I'll have a go at this as I'm convinced it will help my trumpet playing.

Picking up my clarinet for the first time in 20 years to learn the clarinet part in my favorite Mountain Goats song, and there are some long slow trills in there.
I knew the basic mechanics of circular breathing but had never actually learned, and your teaching style is so approachable, informative, and encouraging. Just what this 30-something needed to get going on a new thing, thank you!
