i was always embarrassed of playing trombone it’s always felt like a "masculine" instrument and i never saw any female play it in my ensemble but this movie made me feel a little comfortable with playing it
I was the only tenor sax in band until I taught my friend to play it so she switched from clarinet. No instrument is masculine or feminine. True, most of our brass were boys but many of them were friends before band who wanted to hang out. The most notable trombone we had in middle school became a drummer in high school and was even better (he switched because of his friends being in percussion.) I think of him almost every time I see a trombone though. He only had a finger (technically two fused on one side) and a thumb on each hand and knowing he could play an instrument or two at such a young age for me really showed me how inclusive music can really be. It also cemented the reality of if someone really wants to accomplish something, nothing will stand in the way as long as the person themselves believes they can. Don't give up your instrument because you are worried about what it implies. Love the experience and if another instrument catches your eye, feel free to try it. I took piano lessons in elementary before I played tenor and when I stopped the latter, it was because I had no soul; I am a technical player, which doesn't work well with jazz.
When I was in band class the trombone player was a girl lol. The only other person I've seen play trombone in person was my friend will, and he had that perfect pitch thing that let him play and tune every instrument.
Pete Docter was very particular about getting Soul's musical scenes accurately, so they actually tracked jazz musicians and used it to animate the characters, and Jon Batiste, who wrote original compositions on the piano, actually played full sessions for their reference. It's remarkable the amount of effort they put into it really.
We've all had this moment once in our life OR will have it. That one moment where after years and years of practice and mastering our instrument, you take control and lose yourself in that moment and just sail with the notes. This movie emphasized it so well
During Covid, my band class did a full complete analysis on the music and soundtrack of this movie, along with other movies, music, and video games. Just absolutely beautiful, it always amazes me when animators take the time to carefully craft the experience of their art to create an almost mirror image of life, but it is so beautiful on the screen it makes me so happy
I'm a musician myself and seeing her play her instrument with such passion and joy was a feeling I know too well and when she said she wanted to quit it made me so mad cause talent ane passion like that shouldn't ever be ignored, the way she stands up and closes her eyes every time she plays is amazing to watch
In animation we don't animate based on nothing, we always use reference. In a film environment like this for anything technically complicated we get people in and film high quality reference. For speaking / moving we usually film ourselves and use this as reference.
i feel complicated about this film, because it feels like it loses its sense of direction after a certain point in the story - but i have so much respect for the absolutely amazing effort they put into this movie. the behind-the-scenes snippets are enlightening. i am not a musician by any stretch, but i'd heard that they put a lot of effort into correctly animating these instruments. it is a delight to see that in action. thank you.
my dad knows the guy who played double bass for souls and they filmed him as well during recording so they could copy his movements exactly. that's what they did for all the instruments
Kids (under 20) nowadays playing Trombone or Trumpet have my full respect!!!!! What an incredible instrument to choose! Such sass, power and voice! - hope to see more!❤
I like how people seem “surprised” when instruments in general are animated correctly. Like for this film, it’s like, the only thing that the animators have to get right lol Detail wise I mean
"the only thing the animators need to get right" I know you aren't a 3d guy but what the film does ain't easy by any means, they have to articulate the rig down to each finger joint 30 times per second of animation
My guess is that they wrote a script that moves the slide within relation of what ever note is being played and then they cleaned up the animation. So much more efficient than actually animating the slide by hand.
As a fellow trombonist (in the making), I’m pleased to finally see that an animation studio FINALLY animated a trombone correctly and it wasn’t just slide between first and seventh positions 😂
I wanted to play the saxophone but I had to play the clarinet since my mom wanted me to. 😭 but honestly love how the notes are actually correct when you would play them with the trombone:D
Tbf, the character is like 12 years old. It could have been intended to show that while she's good, she's still learning and her technique still needs work.
i loved the music-centered parts of this movie, and really all of the segments in real life. the animation, emotions and storytelling were just on point! but the soul world bored me so much :(
I know. I play trombone for the school band and one of the other trombonists always slouches, bends over, and puffs their cheeks to play which ends up making it sound horrible, quiet, and unintellegable.
I've always wondered how you get to decide which notes to play when recreating a passage that they get wrong since only the position is clear and several notes can be selected on each position I know there are less notes available in the very low register but if it's mid or upper then what's the criteria?
The fact that 99% of people just think you suck/are annoying/being weird is also accurate for musicians. Music is only appreciated when it's listened to. Sometimes it's like shoving paintings infront of blind people.
I used to play in my school band. Started in 6th grade. Left after sophomore year. Now that I'm a senior, thinking of bigger and better things, I realise I would give anything just to play with that group again. Trombone was never my favourite to listen to but I'm so glad I picked it up. I never knew they were the best years I could ever have.
It’s a technique called rotoscoping. When done right, it can make musical scenes look incredible. There’s this anime called Kids on the Slope that does rotoscoping, and the animation on the instruments is fantastic.
It’s so cool to see a Disney movie have real slide movements for a scene. Usually, they would just put what ever sounds right then have people expose them for trying to play The Entertainer but instead spamming the keys on the piano.
As a beginner trombonist, I am glad that the animators took the time to see how to put together a trombone, what the case looks like (on the outside) and how you play it.
I really love the detail of the trombone case. I know it’s simple, and sounds kinda silly, but its like the same case that I used to see everywhere in my middle school band hall and its super nostalgic for me
My one and only complaint, as someone who started playing the trombone when I was 8, is that no kid has that kind of perfect crisp tonal quality. It made it immediately obvious that an adult professional was playing it expertly. But yeah, when that's my only complaint about a trombone appearing in media (it should be statistically impossible how many of them appear the wrong way round) then I'm pretty happy! This movie was a real love letter to jazz, thanks for demonstrating that they got the slide movements spot on!
I'm not surprised that they would animate it well, this is the animation studio that dressed up one of their coworkers in a chef suit and threw him in a pool just to learn how to animate wet clothes for Linguini in Ratatouille. Pixar is in a league of its own when it comes to this kinda stuff. As a guitarist, they did a fantastic job animating Coco's guitar playing too! Lovely playing too!

Had to reupload due to some technical issues. Also I’m not sure why UA-cam is automatically disabling my comments again :(. UPDATE: It's because UA-cam thinks this video is endangering children? I guess the other videos similar to mine with thousands of views aren't endangering children?
sus
all children's content gets comments disabled
Oof sorry about that, I hope you get real big some day so you don't have to deal with these kinds of stupid issues.
There are some trombone players who might agree that trombone can be hazardous to one's health.
well youtube is prettty darn low iq (read:stoo-pit) with censoring. they don't process report quickly and kept on disabling comments on a whim. there are videos where youtube just decided "you know what ? I'm gonna take away all the audio in the video", and the audio wasn't even copyrighted music or anytthing, all pure original from creators.
Finally, justice to the trombone!!! Honestly one of the most underrated instruments in brass.
What about euphonium?
Baritone/euphonium is the only underrated brass instrument
@@tren7730 yeah almost nobody knows about them 😔
trombone is literally overrated in brass but ok lol
@@ptyw. lol I don't know what your on cuz there are 3 trombones in our low brass section and I'm one of them-
your work is not only informative but also visually stunning!
Pixar puts a lot of research and effort into making things like this accurate. It's this kind of attention to detail that makes Pixar even more awesome.
i was always embarrassed of playing trombone it’s always felt like a "masculine" instrument and i never saw any female play it in my ensemble but this movie made me feel a little comfortable with playing it
masculine probably wasn’t the best word to use, but i couldn’t think of anything else.. ive always seen trombones be associated with guys
That's good! The trombone is a beautiful instrument.
It’s because males have larger lungs than females, but my brother’s old marching band had a few girls doing the wind instruments too.
I feel like soul is one of those situations where it is almost mandatory that a small detail like this is done correctly
Damn you’re in school band? My condolences
This makes me super happy. Much respect to pixar!!
For speaking / moving we usually film ourselves and use this as reference.
the way they did everything perfectly, the animation paired with the music, the positioning of the instrument, and literally everything overall.
i feel complicated about this film, because it feels like it loses its sense of direction after a certain point in the story - but i have so much respect for the absolutely amazing effort they put into this movie. the behind-the-scenes snippets are enlightening. i am not a musician by any stretch, but i'd heard that they put a lot of effort into correctly animating these instruments. it is a delight to see that in action. thank you.
This video got me teary eyed and idky. I’m clapping right now. It’s all beautiful!
my dad knows the guy who played double bass for souls and they filmed him as well during recording so they could copy his movements exactly. that's what they did for all the instruments
Disney has been proud to show of their new instrument tracking and water tech lately, and both are looking beautiful!..
Pixar
I love that an animated film is much more accurate depicting musical instruments than live action…
This made a serious impact on animation of instruments tbh
The girl who voiced Connie goes to my middle school!! She’s actually super nice and was ‘discovered’ at a school play.
Kids (under 20) nowadays playing Trombone or Trumpet have my full respect!!!!! What an incredible instrument to choose! Such sass, power and voice! - hope to see more!❤
They be the most annoying kids tho💀
Thank You!!! I am a 16-year-old who plays trombone, mallets, and piano by the way!
Why thanks! Currently a 14 year old trumpet player
Learning to play trumpet, thanks!
13 year old trumpeter here! Thanks for the respect, it comes to you as well!
I like how people seem “surprised” when instruments in general are animated correctly. Like for this film, it’s like, the only thing that the animators have to get right lol
Detail wise I mean
Well, it's just that many people who happen to be executives or directors didn't care about these details, so there you go
Because a more often than not , the animation doesn't actually match what is being played...
"the only thing the animators need to get right" I know you aren't a 3d guy but what the film does ain't easy by any means, they have to articulate the rig down to each finger joint 30 times per second of animation
U don't know what you're talking about lol
making it sound easier than it is
At least a movie that knows every of their moves they added every details
i'm proud of the movie creators
got damn that's amazing!! I loved the way they animated the piano scenes. absolutely mind blowing.
Fun fact: they actually had several musicians of different variety play and be recorded on video so the animators could make 3D renders for it
Anyone else get uncanny vibes to how oddly realistic this movie is?
FORRRREALL it’s actually so relatable I cried
My guess is that they wrote a script that moves the slide within relation of what ever note is being played and then they cleaned up the animation. So much more efficient than actually animating the slide by hand.
A movie about music can’t be wrong about how instruments work
They put so much care into the animations for the instruments that it’s insane
He's so good doing the trumpet! Keep up the great work!!
Pixar animators spent weeks filming at Berkeley college to get all fingerings and slide positions accurate
I am glad they did all the instruments accurate. They love music.
As a fellow trombonist (in the making), I’m pleased to finally see that an animation studio FINALLY animated a trombone correctly and it wasn’t just slide between first and seventh positions 😂
it's amazing how precise the movie is
each note matches perfectly
The growl on it when she stands up sends a chill down my spine every time! Soul is so underrated
That’s the crazy thing with soul, everything, even during Joe Gardner’s “zone” improvisation, was animated perfectly down to the frame.
0:44 finally
Finally what?
0:54 i call this "the flabbergaster."
i just love soul so much, they actually cared enough to match the sound and instruments 😣
And that's what I call taking your job seriously
0:08 that was schnasty omg
First
second ig
On faster passages the animation lags behind, but ti still gets there. Better than 99% of musical animation.
I love Soul and I hope they make a sequel
I wanted to play the saxophone but I had to play the clarinet since my mom wanted me to. 😭 but honestly love how the notes are actually correct when you would play them with the trombone:D
She stands up when she gets lost in the music. Such an amazing detail :D
They animated the trombone correctly but you are not supposed to puff your cheeks.
Tbf, the character is like 12 years old. It could have been intended to show that while she's good, she's still learning and her technique still needs work.
@@BambiTrout yeah that's true bro
i loved the music-centered parts of this movie, and really all of the segments in real life. the animation, emotions and storytelling were just on point! but the soul world bored me so much :(
Yeah the "real life" world is more interesting than the soul world
The only thing that’s wrong for the Thromebone is that your cheeks can’t be puffy
Unless you're circular breathing, but yeah, she doesn't really look to be doing that though
we know he's been playing for hours when u see the liquid air
The animators for soul took great care to make sure that the instruments were as accurate as possible. It’s part of why the movie is so brilliant.
I guess you could say this movie has a lot of SOUL put into it.
What she’s doing wrong is puffing her face (unless her face is just like that)
I know. I play trombone for the school band and one of the other trombonists always slouches, bends over, and puffs their cheeks to play which ends up making it sound horrible, quiet, and unintellegable.
exaggerated for the cartoon effect maybe
I play Trombone myself and the fact they got the sound and movement right is amazing, PLUS THEY EVEN HAD HER ASSEMBLE IT CORRECTLY!
I am glad that they finally animated whatever instruments in this movie :)
what song is this in the 0:29 ?
It's a Pixar movie about jazz. Of course they were meticulous in animating the instruments.
This detail makes the movie 2x better, knowing that these animators have an actual musical taste and good attention to detail
I can’t beleive you can just mimic it like that! Cool man
I play flute and this is so cool! Hope you and your Trombone have the best of time together! ❤
The least I would expect from pixar, really.
I've always wondered how you get to decide which notes to play when recreating a passage that they get wrong since only the position is clear and several notes can be selected on each position
I know there are less notes available in the very low register but if it's mid or upper then what's the criteria?
The fact that 99% of people just think you suck/are annoying/being weird is also accurate for musicians.
Music is only appreciated when it's listened to. Sometimes it's like shoving paintings infront of blind people.
Most people do not care that much about music. Just singing and poetry.
Omg rahima this is so pro! Happy 3 years on yt🥺
I know it’s not the same movie, but in the Bonus videos of Coco, they showed how they animated the guitar playing scenes by copying the musicians!
It’s a technique called rotoscoping. When done right, it can make musical scenes look incredible. There’s this anime called Kids on the Slope that does rotoscoping, and the animation on the instruments is fantastic.
@@Caddynars i didn’t know that! Thanks for the info.
So, is it accurate?
This whole movie has accurate animation. You can look at both screens at the same fime

It’s so cool to see a Disney movie have real slide movements for a scene. Usually, they would just put what ever sounds right then have people expose them for trying to play The Entertainer but instead spamming the keys on the piano.
Every band i have been in, everyone loves the trombonist, and they are typically pretty high on the social ladder.
As a beginner trombonist, I am glad that the animators took the time to see how to put together a trombone, what the case looks like (on the outside) and how you play it.
I really love the detail of the trombone case. I know it’s simple, and sounds kinda silly, but its like the same case that I used to see everywhere in my middle school band hall and its super nostalgic for me
The absolute beauty of rotoscoping
My one and only complaint, as someone who started playing the trombone when I was 8, is that no kid has that kind of perfect crisp tonal quality. It made it immediately obvious that an adult professional was playing it expertly. But yeah, when that's my only complaint about a trombone appearing in media (it should be statistically impossible how many of them appear the wrong way round) then I'm pretty happy! This movie was a real love letter to jazz, thanks for demonstrating that they got the slide movements spot on!
No shut buddy
Also, look at Malawi lee McDonald
I'm not surprised that they would animate it well, this is the animation studio that dressed up one of their coworkers in a chef suit and threw him in a pool just to learn how to animate wet clothes for Linguini in Ratatouille. Pixar is in a league of its own when it comes to this kinda stuff. As a guitarist, they did a fantastic job animating Coco's guitar playing too!
Lovely playing too!
Im happy to see a movie with correctly animated instruments
