In regards to the pausing of the song: We've already heard it. Most of us hundreds of times at least. We are here to listen to your thoughts on it. Do your thing, man.
TRUTH
Thousands of times**
Came to say this
@@jasonwonderinthelight8098 I remember my first Tool album
Heard it a hundred times with another thousand yet to go!!
Sometimes I’m shocked at the stuff you missed and then I remember that not everyone had to ride in the car with my dad in the early 2000s 😂
I am one of those dads. My daughter had to endure my music choices and at the time she may not have understood the songs, but as she gets older she grows to appreciate it more and hopefully passes it on to my granddaughter and any future grandchildren.
Hell yeah, I can only speak for myself but I joke about my dad’s music taste with the complete understanding that we now have exactly the same music taste
I know you think we don’t care about your life story, but I think it’d be a great idea if you did a video where you just talked about who you are and how you got to do what you do!
i thought the same especially when that Terry Crews moment came up in a past video!
yeah, i think most of us are invested enough to what to get to know him
I have seen TOOL 6 times....they take you to another Universe!!
Was gunna see them for a third time last year. But ... Ya.. stupid covid. Both times were the best shows I have been too
Adam jones was actually a special effects artist for movies like Jurassic park and the terminator. He also made the music videos.
Wow I didn't know that. Check out his IMDB holy shit. Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Ghostbusters II...
In an interview Maynard once said that Adam likes to have the full control over making the videos. To be fair, I am yet to be disappointed by any of his work, so... Go off I guess 😂
I read this as Alex Jones it was very confusing and now hillarious.
Thank you for uploading this! You asked THE magic question: "I wonder when they play it live..." THAT is why we buy tickets to watch this. They will do EXACTLY this. You would assume they cheat somehow but they do not. They play it just like what you hear on the album. If this were an Olympic event, they would take home the Platinum. Do yourself this favor: Pick the technically most difficult thing you can find in any Tool song, but a ticket to see them live and watch EXACTLY that moment. They will nail it live. Plus they will focus lights on that moment because they know why you bought that ticket. Don't tell me "You're an obsessed fan", just go see for yourself. These guys are exactly this good.
From what I understand, Maynard only starts on the lyrics once the band have composed something substantial. I think this is a key aspect of Maynard's timing and tone choices and of course his lyrics are always thought-proking and unique. Appreciate the reaction as always!
The guitar and bass are composed first, then drums are added. Once the guitar, bass, and drums are done then Maynard adds the vocal melody. The fact that he adds such creative melodies on top of the music is insane.
"I know the pieces fit, cause I saw them fall apart" - the off-kilter rhythmic structures I think are a great musical representation of the idea of the song of trying to find how to put the pieces necessary for communication back together... The verse is basically over alternating 5/8 + 7/8, which do fit together into a larger 6 pattern, but when performed always feel like they are two halves that just can't quite come together. Also, fun to hear you are from CT! I teach modern band (rock ensemble) in a high school in NW Connecticut!
That is SO COOL!! Good for them, good for you!!!
not to take away from the insight of your comment, but it's "I know the pieces fit, cause I watched them fall away"
I find the fact that you paused it at the lyric "Finding beauty in the dissonance" and started talking about loving odd time signatures very ironic in a satisfying way.
Maynard's vocals on "The Pot" are top notch. Check that one out.
Their ability to play odd time signatures and polyrhythms but still make it sound so natural is awesome
Regarding Maynard's vocals being in the mix, Tool tries to give each band member an equal weight.
Maynard considers himself just another instrument in Tool. If you want hear Maynard up front, try A Perfect Circle or Pucifer.
The whole album Lateralus genuinely changed my life. When I see Tool live, it’s like a religious experience. Honestly.
Do at least 1 tool song a week..... You will enjoy, we will enjoy ... Win win
PS: do it. Make it every Tool Tuesday.
Live they are absolutely CD quality perfect.......this is a real once or twice in your lifetime type band, extremely gifted, all 4 players, above the rim, extremely cerebral and organic, lineup intact since 95......I consider them a gift......the greatest lyricist of all time
Yep, what you hear on CD is what you get.
Vicarious!!!!
A tool song to blow your musical mind is lateralus. Lyrics, instruments are part of the Fibonacci sequence!!! Please react
I saw them live in 2002, they are one of the few bands that sound just as good live, they put a lot of effort in being prepared and giving you your money’s worth; for this particular song they even brought out the contorted dancers from the video. Also I like how they always pick a unique band to open for them; they had tenacious D open for them before anyone knew who Jack Black was. Tricky was the opening band for that show and they had a very unique style. Also their writing process is that Maynard waits for the other members to put riffs and most of the arrangements together, then he adds lyrics to them.
Live, oh boy. They go off on great musical tangents. Also, anyone who hasn't seen them live and get worried about the price, IMO they undercharge for what they provide
Because Maynard is such a troll in interviews its hard to tell when he is saying the truth. That being said, he did mention that he writes Tool lyrics to the finished piece.
His writing seems to differ from project to project, as he is more involved in the process with Puscifer.
Incense, lava lamps and Tool...I’m 100% in 😍
You’ve gotta be one of the top 3 reactors on UA-cam. So much knowledge and insight. Glad you’re discovering new music to round you out a bit. Great shit!
The only other reactor I hold in higher regard is Elizabeth (the charismatic voice).
Alexis popping in for an "Ew, NO David!" 😂
Rick Beato has an amazing video breakdown of this song, it's great if you want to know how to count Schism's meter changes.
Here's a more detailed one: ua-cam.com/video/pRmwRgu7Zok/v-deo.html
I've seen Tool well over 15 times (not quite 700, lol) at this point and they generally play the songs as they were recorded. However, they do a lot of different "intros" to songs that are very atmospheric. Their live show is just awesome to see.
I’ve seen them live once. For the 10,000 days tour and it was easily the best concert experience of my life. So captivating.
They're amazing live. This album's tour was so very epic. I saw them on both legs of the tour, and was absolutely blown away. You can find lots of live video bootlegs on UA-cam but hopefully you get to experience it yourself one day. :)
Time signature for most of it is 5/8 & 7/8 alternating. 2+3 and 2+2+3 respectfully
in regards to how they write, Danny, Adam, and Justin write the music, the music is then given to Maynard who writes lyrics and melody. Maynard has said he writes his lyrics are based on the music
"Maynards voice is hypnotic" no truer words ever spoken.
Having seen the Pneuma live, you should already know that the live tracks are quite similar to the studio version. Obviously not everything can be reproduced the same since TOOLs don't use samples, but on the other hand they are big effects users and this is a pretty big help. The biggest differences are in the fact that usually in live shows there are additional parts and long interludes that have been cut in the studio. Often in live the songs last on average a few minutes longer.

Hypnotic is the perfect word for Maynard’s voice. He can put you in a trance. His voice is sexy as hell snd he’s such a cool guy! So damn Intelligent. I love all 3 of his bands.
When they play they are spot on they are amazing the music the precision and the laser show to match are all euphoric and another band that is amazing live is deftones especially in a small venue with less than 500 people
"They are very careful and deliberate." Exactly. This is part of TOOL's greatness is that they COULD easily play super complex things, adding tons of sounds to their songs, but they CHOOSE not to because they feel it is unnecessary. TOOL is almost all lean meats, very little fat... and what fat there is, it's the good kind.
Very enjoyable reaction. I think you should do a Tool reaction at least every other day. 😉 You'll be happy, we'll be happy. 🤗
You should check out Starset. Instrumentally they're really cool and I know you'll dig it. The best way to describe them is if a melodic 2000s rock band like Breaking Benjamin or Muse teamed up with Hans Zimmer to make a soundtrack for a sci-fi movie. It Has Begun, Manifest, and Satellite are good starting songs.
Couldn't agree more starset was a great find for me the album Divisions is fantastic and this is coming from a tool fan but would be interested in you listening to Mastadon especially the song Toe to toes
I have been in the Tool army since 92. Their live shows are a level up on the audio. It’s an immersive experience. The do a number of extended versions of theirs songs. To see them pull off the technicality of their songs live is something to behold. Great review.
Love the tee...brings back good memories of the 70s. Enjoyed the reaction, nice job!
Tool literally uses advanced calculus and high level math to make their music. It’s truly insane
They're alternating between 5/8 and 7/8 during the verses
More Tool!! Love the way you explain what you hear. Good to learn new things even though I’m a Tool Fan since maybe 95-96
Great reaction! Really enjoying watching you pick up on the beautiful layers that go into Tool! Yes, envelope is a perfect description. Just the right balance between vocals and really all their sounds. Judicious and deliberate, also great descriptions. This is one of my favorites because, as you picked up on, the timing is odd, jumps around, keeps you guessing (hence like a schism) yet there is such a perfect overall balance, like how you described the vocals just sit in there. "I know the pieces fit."
I've loved this song for years but I just connected two things that I know about myself but never thought of in this way -- visually I love symmetry, acoustically I love asymmetry. I keep items, things, my house relatively even but I am attracted to music that hits on the upbeat, has hiccups. And how wonderful it is that those two things can create a balance. Like the communication/schism theme of this song, overall it's immensely pleasing to the ear and the pieces fit. 👌❤
The Pot has got to be my favorite Tool song. That bass groove is something else!
The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound - Spiritbox. Love your analysis on every song. Very entertaining and informative
Great song. Bass is so killer. Justin Chancellor is amazing, they really lucked out replacing their first bassist with him during the AEnima album.
Who would’ve thought that one of TOOL’s most radio friendly songs has a chorus with no vocals. Only TOOL👽🔥👽
I don't fully agree on the most radio-friendly song tho...🤔
To me it's rather 46&2 or The Pot (don't know if these were actually released as singles)
@@richtigersoan I said “songs”, as in plural. 🤦🏻♂️
@@sevenduster27 omg I'm so so sorry 😐
Tool!!!!!!
THE POT
THE POT
THE POT
THE POT
THE POT.
You just have to. I promise you Dave, it will be the best decision you have made this week.
Unexpected, but a splendid video!
Love Tool so much. Clicked for them!
U binging!!!!
I swear I had the bell on, I’ve been missing out! COTS series is awesome.
Adams Jones is the driving force behind their videos. He was a visual effects artist before joining Tool.
Huge conundrum. Be the fan and listen to a full album by yourself right now, or continue to entertain us by waiting to do a reaction so we can see you enjoy it. I feel your pain, brother. Good luck! 😀
On the 2001 tour the people in the video performed on-stage with Tool. Dressed exactly as they are now... all of it hanging out lol.
Your reaction on the their time signature was my exact reaction when I first heard this album. I had my bass out like oooh nice riff lemme try that and then I was like wtf is going on what is happening lol. Tool keeps you on your toes as a musician and makes you pay attention. I love it
It is unbelievable live!
Hi, new Tool fan! 😎
Sorry I haven't been around man, I am glad you are back to Tool though, this is real magic. I thought you would like to know that your inspiration to practice daily made me Pit Captian and Centre Vibraphonist in this years marching band. Your devotion to the fun of band really makes me want to practice, keep it up!
Love your videos! Can you get back to doing more Tool? Would love the Grudge, Rosetta Stoned and Descending
Also you touched on Maynard's vocals sitting lower in the mix. He himself says this is because his voice is just as much an instrument as Danny's drums, Adam's guitar and Justin's bass.
They extend the midsection with a double-time bridge, while the little humonculous digs about in the big guy's head-chunk
My favorite Tool song
They play just like the album live. Seen em a cpl times
Never really thought about this but you can feel this in 4/4 since it’s 5/4 and 7/4
Live this was incredible. Literally made it into the show as Schism was playing since my flight to Auckland, New Zealand was delayed for six hours. Search 'Tool - Jam - Schism - Live NZ Auckland 1080p - 2013'. The mid-song jam shows how creative these guys are. Show to remember.
Dude, your lava lamp game is ON POINT!!!
Bruh, no one’s got a better lava lamp game then me, no one!!
they're just as good live
Reacting to Tool.. Made me like and sub. word up.
I also play by ear, so I love your style of reactions, hence a NEW SUB!! Have you reacted to The Grudge??
I've always banged my head to Maynard's cadence.
Taciturn-Corey Taylor Live in London. Chills. Rock in a Roll Hall of Fame quality
When they play live they play it just like the record. Sometimes they do add some stuff in the moment though
🖤🖤🖤
This song and many of their others really need to be experienced laying down, headphones on, and eyes closed. It's a fucking trip
It's a little different live because of all the mixing tricks they do. However, they represent the tune perfectly because of their musicianship. You'd be surprised at some of the noises that come out of Danny just flicking his wrist or something. They are all masters of their craft.
Keep up the Tool!!
TWSS
Love the breakdown. Really curious what you would think of Tash Sultana, Jungle Live California Roots!
I enjoy your reactions AND the way you break these songs down. Keep on going! Maybe hit some Depeche Mode...Enjoy the Silence is a great place to start. Thanks for what you do...it makes my day a little better.
I love how the mellow opening chords of the song at 3:13 come back around to kick you in the teeth at 13:33
Greatiest band to every come to this earth
You definitely need to check out the orchestral version done of this song.
They only record what they can replicate “live”.... and it sounds like it. Great reviews!
Would love to see you react to Maynard's other band Perfect Circle
Another great record that came out 2001 is Blackwater Park by Opeth. I would recommend The Drapery falls as a good starting point but in truth any song from it is devine.
I would absolutely love to see you do a video on Two Way Mirror by Loathe. I think you would enjoy them! Love binging your videos 😀
I don't know if there are more pauses, or lava lamps. \,,/TOOL forever\,,/
...we care about your life ! Haha share ! Thanks for the reaction/review. Yes very distinct sound which makes them amazing ! Is it the time sig ? - for me I feel like it's the bass power that allows me to recognize before Maynard's epic voice
You need to do the discography. Start from the first song and go through all their albums. Don't miss Salival ( said : Sal • live • all) in between Aenima and Lateralus. The version of push it on that album will change your life.
Lateralus album will complete your soul.
Listening to all of their music is the most worthwhile experience in music you will ever experience.
And btw, I also live in CT.
Their writing process is pretty straightforward as the instrumentalists create songs and Maynard writes according to how the song makes him feel. Live, they are tight as fuck and really only take creative liberties very occasionally in only certain songs because honestly, they all come perfect anyway. Also shoutout to whoever their light/show people are because DAMN they're a visual experience as much as an audible one.
Its funny that you mentioned wondering how much of the song they change up when performing live right at the spot in the song that they change while performing live. And yes they are incredible live.
Him: Cool sounds.
Me: Tool sounds.
For deeper insight into the writing process, Rick Beato has a great interview with Maynard on his channel. Highly recommended.
I really like your interpretation! I believe this was a little ditty Maynard made up because of some disagreements within the band. They're are the best pieces for a most awesome puzzle. 😍
From what I understand very simply put, it’s about relationships and about how even though you know you’re compatible, with one another, you can’t seem to make it work.
“Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion, between supposed lovers.”
I wanna play music with you, dude. Know I probably won’t, but your analysis is really good.
You should react or at least listen to Nothing But Thieves if you're not familiar with them. They did a fantastic performance of their song "Amsterdam" at Dingwalls
This is going to be super random...but I love your "EW, DAVID" pillow hahaha. Great show. EDIT: I made this comment before you made the Schitt's Creek comment.
When they play live you don't get all the nuances from the studio production but it's still amazing. They also have some alternate and extended versions like Stinkfist, Opiate and of course Pushit. You must compare the 2 different versions of Pushit (Aenima album vs Salival Live).
