Fun fact, Chancellor actually does play fingerstyle on one tool track, 10,000 days (wings pt.2), towards the end he switches back to pick though
YES, I was searching for this comment hahahah one of the most fun tunes to play. Lots of endurance needed though.
There’s also 3 or 4 songs in beadg
only reason i found this out was bc of the Rig Rundown that just dropped like a week ago :')
@@therobotFrom94 pretty sure that's how most people found out
@tiojohann yeah tried learning it a few months ago, my forearm was on fire
you could literally do this with any and every tool song the band is perfect
Every member of the band is a master, like Queen and Rush.
just sad he play with a pick....and pick take less skill
@86 huh? it's for the tone, not to make it easy, it would be impossible without a pick... He also is a guitar player so he is used to using a pick, guitar players make the best bass players... Do not be sad
@@sebg2086he is not playing it with a pick, he’s playing a 4-string guitar
I know cause I’m exactly the same
Let’s talk about skill, when you can play power chords on bass for 3 hours in a row without cramping. I’m being a dick just cause you asked for it.

R u kidding me?! One hour ago rig rundown with JC and 3 minutes ago this?!?! 😂😅❤❤❤
Dude thanks
Where is there a recent rig rundown vid?
@@FourT6and22 Premier Guitar :)
Seriously! Today keeps on giving!
That’s great marketing
Paul was a guitar player prior to joining Tool in 1990. He left the band because he felt unsatisfied creatively and wanted to get back to guitar. At that point he created the band Lush. My band Thunderin' Reign opened up for Tool a couple of times at the Mason Jar in Phoenix in 92. The Phoenix New Times just posted an article about this, written by Benjamin Leatherman. Thanks for doing some Tool finally, Ian! 🛠🔧❤❤❤
It's not Lush, it's Lusk 😁 but Lush a great shoegaze band !
Imagine quitting Tool
Good it wasn't a contentious departure. Danny said he is still real good friends with Paul and worked with him recently.
@@MrSnivsHe's in Ministry now, so it's not as if he lost anything cool by leaving Tool
I'm pretty sure Adam Jones originally played bass prior to joining Tool, too.
My eyes lit up like it was christmas seeing a video on Tool .... my god....
🧡🧡🧡
*God.
Right In Two does not get the attention it DESERVES.
10000 Days IS the greatest album by far.
WHAT A COMPOSITIONALLY MASTERFUL ALBUM.
It is likely my favorite. I listened to it every day for years as 10,000 days was the only cd I kept in the car lol.
I hit Lateralis pretty hard when it came out (full album, not just the song) and saw them live both for Lateralis release and then 10,000 Days after it came out. Saw them live for Fear Inoculum as well. My favorite album, influenced by the live performance is Lateralis. Choco-chip Trip live, certainly made that performance and album a very close 2nd. But 10,000 Days may still be the best composed art ever put out.
I’ll agree with your comment about right in two. However, I will have to disagree about 10,000 days being the greatest album. Ænima gets the greatest album ever in my humble opinion
@@TheCarelessAquarius When you consider the significant artistic, melodic (vocal) and instrumental leap from Opiate to Ænima then I can totally get your perspective.
man, i'm a 53-year old ex-pro dummer and have been watching YT drum channels for years... picked bass up about two months ago and the freaky algorithm fed me this... you guys might be the BEST music channel on YT, such great 1) humor 2) talent 3) instruction and 4) personality. you guys are simply awesome, so grateful i found you.
The chemistry between you two is contagious! This is the coolest SBL edit ever. Overflowing with stoke and joy! You two are a hit!
Agreed!
I thought Justin uses a schecter?
IDK witch is is nicer the wenge wood or the output
I just came from watching the Rig Rundown with Justin so this was surprisingly convenient timing, my band and I went to see Tool back in November and it was one of the coolest shows I’ve ever seen (and not just because they brought out Alex Lifeson for Jambi/Passage to Bangkok), we also played Sober at our most recent show last year so that was definitely a lot of fun since we’ve been saving it since our second show because we never had an opportunity to play it but it was definitely fun to finally unveil it especially with my own Rickenbacker (On a side note to Ian, it was a Rick that he played on the album because in the music video for the song you can briefly get a glimpse of him playing it when some images of the band show up)
When "bass line from Jambi" was brought up, a piece of me was really hoping it was the riff at 5 and half-ish minutes in.
That little bass break fills me with so much joy.
Agreed I love that part
@@milohasagun It's such a pleasant, melodic groove that comes out of this otherwise rhythmic and chugg-ey song.
Yesss, i was hoping for the same thing mate, this break fills is black magic, shamanic, for me, one of the greatest moments in the history of music, no exaggeration, i still get goosebumps even after 10000 listens..."Shine on forever
Shine on benevolent sun..."
@@anthonyschloup5251The best part of any track only equal to Rosettas Stoned epic part.
This is the video me and my son have been waiting for. Literally typing with my Tool sweater on 🤘🤘🤘
an hour before this video was released , they released an updated Rig Rundown with justin explaining why he uses wal vs. stingray. I guess today is a tool kinda day.
I really appreciate that IMA was cool with just leaving in the Wal when he found out it was a MM bass. IMA keeping it real. Relatable. All the Tool bass tracks are high skill. Loved the video!
After all these years, I’m still convinced Tool is not a band, but an attempt at first contact from some ancient race of gods/aliens. I’ve seen them twice and both times felt more like being at church than a concert.
I'm inclined to agree with you
Amen
Bro welcome to the truth !
🪄🙏✨💫🧬💜
After listening to Tool for the first time, the first thing I said was, "These are Martians!!!"
In terms of the aesthetics of music, they have gone beyond just beautiful notes, every time I listen Tool by headphone in my loneliness room I think my brainwaves are being manipulated, it affects on my consciousness level, why?!
Haha..
my efforts are useless, their work cannot be put into words!
As soon as she said it was purely bass and vocals, I knew it was The Pot! Awesome video!
I wish this video was longer… I could have watched u guys do every tool song… please do more tool stuff 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻… insanely great video
So glad that intention is part of this video. It's my favourite bass line and its so overlooked. I love playing It at my local open mic
Your part around the 14 minute mark about Tool breaking the rules, that is what drew me to them when I was new to bass guitar. I hadn't yet grasped all the rules of bass, then I hear these guys totally bucking the "traditional" role of a bass in a band. Plus Tool bass parts are fun to play!
Even how y'all own up to mistakes is just delightful. SBL videos make my day. Also, WOOOOO SHARON'S BACK!
This is so good. The best overall Tool bass breakdown I have seen, and great energy… so positive and engaging. Time to listen to all of these songs again, and with this new knowledge. Awesome.
Another Tool fan here. This is such a pleasure to see people excited about diving deep into music. I'll never forget the first time I heard Forty Six and Two my freshman year of high school in 1998. It's amazing how music can take you back in time with vivid memories and nostalgia. Cheers!
Love that you've done JC, Tool have been my favourite for almost 25 years now!🤘🖤
2 Ian and Sharon videos this week? That’s AWESOME!!!!
Great as always!!! Cheers!!!
These conversations are just the best. Highlight of my work day!
Thank you for this. Tool is all about navigating layers and dimensions. Super love this appreciation video!!! 🎉🎉🎉
You two are super fun. Loved watching this. Tool really is an incredible band. Well, there are those of us who love Tool, and then there are those of us who love to say they hate Tool just to be contrary. But really, we all love Tool.
Finally someone acknowledging Paul !!!
The first time i've ever seen this channel, I subscribed because your enthusiasm the two of you have is dynamic!!
Great song choices, great banter, great handling of the Wall issue. Well done all around.
You’re passionate vibes for bass are infectious
You guys made this so fun to watch, love the chemistry for Bass & Tool.
Recently picked up a bass again and really trying to get good this time around. It blows my mind how many bass tracks I thought were guitar tracks as a teen.
You guys have been absolutely killing it with the content lately!!!
I could watch you guys do this for hours. We need a part 2!
Just saw them in Vegas last weekend for the first time! Frickin EPIC! Best show ever (for me).
Seen them 4 times. Every single time was legendary.
I don't really know how to explain it, but this was one of the most relaxing, and comfortable music review videos I've watched. You guys seem super genuine, while providing a lot! of great information.
I’ve heard that section Lateralus a million times and it still gives me goosebumps.
Thanks for this one!!! Huge Justin Chancellor fan, and love playing these riffs. Cheers
This video is amazing - i felt like i was being treated to a rare opportunity to witness the everyday friendship between Ian and Shaz; you two are such a magnificient duo, especially when you both get to geek out about your favourite music. And the editing / production is *chef's kiss*
Much needed love towards Intension! Love that track it’s so underrated
Great job, I&S, and entertaining as always!
It's amazing what Justin can do with only like 3 or 4 notes. None of these bass lines are that hard but with all the hammer ones and pull offs they sound huge.
Also, more Sharon!!
Love the energy and enthusiasm of you 2 :)
6:50
My fvaorite tool for this is using a zoom B3 four, with a tap tempo for the delay. As long as you tap on time the bpm it tells you and your sound will always be perfect!
Lateralus is the GOAT and I will die on that hill.
Damn right. The Grudge is the greatest song of all time.
I passed out at my doctor’s office and, when I came back to, The Grudge was playing in my head. Excellent song!
@@russellszabadosaka5-pindin849 That song is The Eleventh Commandment.
Lateralus is second best imo, with Aenima being the best.
@@DerekCarrMusicPhotographerThis
These two are so energy infused and enthusiastic.. JC is a genius and soundscape aficionado.
The sheer amount of Bass Faces in this video is simply staggering 😂🤣😣👊🎄
Hahaha love it
Justin is amazing
justin really helped change their sound
This is the greatest video this channel has ever done!.... I love JC. JC will save your soul. JC is god.
🧡🧡🧡
100% agree, Justin’s bass playing is godlike. So glad Adam didn’t go “we already have a guitarist” on him! I’ve been through a lot of shittalking cause of similar guitar-ish style. Discovering Tool healed that trauma for me. Turns out jelly guitarists we’re just too intimidated by bass power chords.
Great stuff! I could nerd out on Tool all day. Learning and playing these bass lines are therapeutic to me.....
And for the record I work at L&M (canadian guitar centre) and hear people riffin' on Schism all the time! Bass line stands the test of time lol
tool is what got me into bass
This is one of the greats! Beautiful video for an exceptional artist... Plus you are both very nice and funny.
AAAaaand. . ., just in case it wasn't noted in the comments, . . .Justin has perfect pitch (beat THAT, Beato), which makes him even MORE bad ass. But he is so humble in interviews, as is Danny. Best rhythm section EVER. (along with Geddy and Neil)
10,000 Days is the my favourite Tool album as well, and I started playing bass when I first listened to it. Also, I'm not into "boutique" instruments or whatever but I absolutely want a Wal ! :D
You are my new best friend.
Totally agree. Always liked it more than Lateralus and over the years it has overtaken even Ænima
I’m one of the people that was clamoring for a Tool video. Thank you.
So glad to see Justin's playing appreciated!
Justin, one of my all time favorite bass player ever
First Premier Guitar, now SBL. Is today Justin Chancellor Day or what?!
It would appear so!!
Yeah dude, it synced with me buying new strings! Got blisters on both fingers that day. Justin is my new Jimi Hendrix after switching guitar to bass.
Sharon’s excitement and “stank face” is literally Me when I hear Tool!! Justin is my Bass God and I love him! Y’all are awesome! New Sub! 🤘🏾
Love the chemistry with these two 😅! Most impressive part for me is Sharon genuinely sounding like JC on a P Bass! Once again demonstrating it’s the greatest of all…
That whammy bass part at the end of Lateralus alwayst got me. Happy to see it get recognition.
Fuuuuck now I gotta go listen to some Tool. These lines gave me goosebumps!
Also. She cracked me up😂 Thanks for posting this video!
Very entertaining discussion, thank you!
You too look like a complete joy to be around. Sharen your face expressions are so great they drag me into what you’re playing. I get the same feeling watching The Warning play.
Oh man,,,shazz is so cool ,,,young & old school at the same time AND fits with the guys so amazingly,, keep it up gang,,SO GOOD 🎸🤠
That was fun, learned a lot. Want to go home from work and play with my bass now lol
I needed this and now I need a second part
Thank you so much for doing this!
Your videos have gotten so, so, so good. I learn and laugh a lot.
Glad to hear it!
That Rickenbacker Paul D’amour had wasn’t just any normal stock Rickenbacker, it was a Chris Squire Signature model. And Justin Chancellor also has only played with fingers on two songs, a hidden track on their live album Salival and the 10,000 Days(Wings Pt. 2), with the latter being some of my favorite playing of his.
Justin Chancellor is one the most innovative, groove-laden, and creative bass players, especially in Rock,.
Paul was interesting, but Justin is just bad ass. Paul is now in Lesser Key…on bass, lol.
If people see you playing bass you won’t be able to play guitar anymore. I have a fender strat at home and can’t get a chance to melt some faces with it, cause I tried bass at a gig once.
Super fun video, great stuff, love it 😊😊😊
The Wal tone....MY GOD!!! And Justin is one of my favorite bass players of all time!
First time hearing of you guys, love your dynamic. Subscribed.
Cheers!!
Thank you for diving into one of my all time favorite players. I would love to see a video on Troy Sanders of Mastodon.
I will never forget the first time I heard the opening riff on the bass for Schism. It was at the Quest Club In Minneapolis (Ian Allison , you know it!) We were waiting for some other band to play that night, than this riff started as the filler music in between bands and all our jaws hit the floor!
The Quest ❤
Might have even been DNA that night...... hard to remember!@@IanMartinAllison
I was in line at a Burger King drive-thru when they premiered Schism a couple of weeks ahead of the release of Lateralus.
This video was so fun. Thanks! 😄
Thanks Shaz, thanks Ian, cool riffs, info & humour. At one point a doggy WTF woof protest, or is that a new Helix add-on ?
Much enjoyed !
Thank you guys for brought this kind of funny and nerdy as hell BASS videos. I recently purchase a HX Stomp because of Ian himself. Line 6 should make you the face of HX family. 🤘🏻😂
That schism main riff sounds the aboslute best when he plays it lower (opens on the A string and accents on the D) bridging between the main riff and the heavier riffs on the dropped D string. So much meatier on those middle strings instead of the D and G.
Spectacular video!! I was smiling the entire time!
I admit that listening to Tool was the reason I started saving up money to one day be able to buy myself my very first bass and watching your videos has been very useful to learn music theory, tips and tricks in the meantime, so thank you!!
One thing though is that I am still a bit confused on how much I should invest on a bass compared to all the pedals at this point.
Is any kind of bass 'good enough' at the end of the day (see the P bass that Sharon uses) to imitate JC when I add all the extra stuff or should I lean more towards specific brands (excluding the Wal for obvious reasons)?
Keep up the good work guys! 💪
The choice of bass is about what sound you're going for and what feels comfortable to you! The pedals will get a lot of basses into the ballpark but it's also about what you enjoy playing, personally I would go for something that gets you closer than a P bass but it really depends on what your budget is!
@@devinebass thanks a lot for the reply, highly appreciated!
Can’t wait you guys do Korn. I know Fieldy’s tone is weird. But I can’t imagine a 00’s altkid, who didn’t think this was the bass-band. Please, please, please
I was a 00’s alt kid fan of KoRn and had NO IDEA about Fieldys bass tone because every stock portable music player had tinny NO BASS headphones. In my THIRTIES was the first time Fieldys bass tone hit like a ton of bricks through proper headphones. How nice!
I just pulled the trigger on a 83 Wal MK1. I got it from the same place you bought the live aid Wal. A certain gallery in jolly ol London 😉 Super excited it comes this week.
Awesome!! Enjoy it when it arrives!!!
@@devinebass got it today it’s amazing
Very entertaining - and the both of you had a lot of fun :-) Tool - just another world...
I’ll agree, The Pot is one of the best songs ever written. Every part of that song is fun as hell to play, fun as hell to sing. A song that definitely says something and rocks so hard.
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
What a band!!! Best drummer today and that bass guitarist is top 5. Vocalist and guitarist are very good in their own right.
One, if not the, most entertaining SBL videos. You two, as combined hosts, are just fun! You can tell how much both of you love Tool and playing bass. More should enjoy music as you two do. Again, awesome vid.
Loved this!
I love the accountability. Recently found your channel, subscribed because you don't take yourself too seriously, its a lost art these days!
THIS IS SOOOO AWESOME ! Drummer who's trying to learn bass and loves tool !! Yea Baby!
Amazing!!! Thank you!
I didn't know it, but I have been clamouring. 🤘🤠
Not a huge Tool guy, but I do appreciate them as musicians. Justin is a great bass player for sure!
I never noticed the delay effect and approach reminds me a bit of One of These Days. Cool video.
Wicked bass player and musician in general. Paul D'amour was great too. Long live Tool.
Hope I get to see them live someday (I live in Argentina, not even in Buenos Aires, so chances are rather slim).
Great video. instant fan
Great vid! Had to pop over to my stereo and listen loudly to a bit of 10,000 Days halfway through your stuff! Now back...
Tool Ontario Show on Feb 17th was a Great Show!! Life-Changing!
🔥🔥🔥
I would have loved for you guys to get into the bass in invincible, especially when that heavy ass jam comes in the last 3rd or so of the song. Maybe part 2 inc?! That bass live is god damn nuts!
The 5th member of Tool is the recording process and engineering. Listen to Maynard’s isolated vocals and they are very complex in their recording. Their music in thoughtful, intentional, creative and confounding. This is why it is art.
