Wow, didn't know they win that fight. I guess deflective armor really helps them in this one because the royal knight charge gets completely negated. Then you can have your uma bannerman buff them up for extra attack too.

honestly at least in-game, with a better overall stats, less cost (even more with French's Keep bonus), and faster training time, the French knight is still a better unit and will most likely win cost efficiency wise, especially against other units. Mounted samurai might be a slightly better tank, though.

@@Falindio That is a shit excuse but OFC all the "exotic" factions always get the strongest units. Can't let the Europeans have a strong unit, no sir. That would be racist or something so it always has to come with a caveat like being less pop efficient, less cost efficient, or just straight up weak.

@@johanlassen6448woa slow down sir. I just pointed out how French knight is still a better heavy cavalry unit, especially when fighting other units. Strongest is also very subjective. Cataphract (which is a European civ) is super strong but is also much more expensive, HRE landsknecht melee damage is overwhelming but is squishy.
Now, Mounted samurasi might be slightly tankier but have less damage, charge attack, and is more expensive compared to French knights. Then the Imperial guard is also a strong heavy cav but it's locked between an Imperial age landmark, and closes off other upgrades. The two I just mentioned are the Asian civs.
Everything has a caveat, and respectfully I would like to have a civil discussion instead of shouting insults to any side, including the game devs.

      @@johanlassen6448 I completely agree,
I hope the devs buff royal knights and give them a bonus to movement speed when running away from a fight, but reduce their hitpoints to make it not owerpowered, seeming that historically the French are known for retreating.

This game’s bias towards Japan is bullshit
Japan already has very powerful samurai infantry, but it also needs to make its cavalry and artillery units very strong.
This completely loses the balance of the game
Moreover, Japan's economic strength in the later period is very strong. Not only can it get free gold and food, but it also has free artillery units.
In fact, the height of the Japanese army in the Middle Ages was very short. The average height of the Japanese recorded in China and South Korea was only 163cm. Since they had been on the small island for a long time, there was not enough grassland to raise cattle and horses. They lacked horses. Compared with the horses in mainland China, the horses are much shorter, like donkeys. Most Japanese infantry only have bamboo and cowhide armor, and only noble and rare samurai can have metal armor.
This game is very unbalanced. It is impossible for the Japanese cavalry to compete with the French Templars. They are even worse than the Mongolian and Chinese knights. As for Japan’s artillery units in the game, it’s even more of a joke. China used the earliest gunpowder troops at the end of the Tang Dynasty. By the 13th and 14th centuries, the whole world began to use fire gate guns, which are single-barreled firecrackers in the game, while Japan still uses bows and arrows. The Japanese did not first use arquebuses until the 15th century, through Spanish trade.

    Funny Video!
A last duell, where you take care of the costs would be nice.
The Samurai cost 10 gold more than the royal knight!
So if you field 100 Samurai there should be around 104 royal knights against them...

Horses were rare because Japan has always been an island country. Only high-ranking officials, such as lords and samurai, were able to ride horses, and even high-ranking officials saw horses only as convenient transportation, not as military service purposes. Compared to other continental countries, the quality of Japanese metal was not as good as that of other countries, so horses could not be dressed with metal armor, and there were no metal horseshoe to attach to their hooves. The Japanese archipelago, a Japanese territory, has long had more mountainous areas than flatlands, and because most of the common people made rice paddies to make ends meet, they always had to fill up the paddy fields before fighting. Japan has not been able to develop large-scale cavalry tactics for these reasons. How can these Japanese cavalry be stronger than the French Knights, who had the most powerful cavalry in the Middle Ages? This game series is based on real history, not on fantasy games such as Starcraft or Warcraft. Therefore, civilization bonuses should not be given to Japanese cavalry.

    1. In 1v1, we see that it takes same shot to take down both knights IF japan can not recharge his deflective armor -> france knights MUST keep japan knights keep getting hit in order to DRAW
    2. In 10 vs 10, I think it depends on whether the army focus on 1 target (multi knights focus on 1 knight) or not, that determine who wins, japan or france both got chance
    3. In 100 vs 100, it's nearly impossible for france to keep japan knights getting hit, many recharged deflective armor absorb the damage thus obviously jp can win
Both units has it's pros and cons considering it's price and ability (e.g., chivalry is useless in this battle) in every circumstance. The units are considered fair, but the civ macro abilities matters

European knights (except for the English ones) should crap on lancers and mounted samurai. The armor difference, war saddle, bigger breed of horses and lance rest should make those fights incredibly one sided (at least in imperial). The royal knight should get an imperial age upgrade imho, it feels so mid with the new civs/variant. Middle eastern and Asian civs should probably get siege sooner and better archers overall (except against English). But man, that cliché of the Japanese getting better melee DMG and deflective armor is triggering me soo hard. And why is the Yumi archer so underwhelming. It's as if the civ was designed by weebs and not by people who are actually interested in Japanese history... It's balanced as a game but man they didn't do justice to the civs. And don't even get me started on cataphracts who come in castle age but are better versions of knights somehow, it should literally be the opposite.
The game is really fun and I can see that the devs pour a lot of love into it but as a medieval era enthusiast I'm flabbergasted by so many design choices.

@@Randy7777 we're not talking about balance but civ design with a bad historical justification. The problem isn't that the unit isn't balanced. It's like giving really expensive WW2 tanks to the Vikings, it'd be silly even if it was balanced.

Can't argue with the quality of their metal because that part is mostly true, however, there is a reason why their armour was the way it was: Samurai combat revolved around horse archery a lot. They had to be able to draw a bow while mounted, and most mail and plate armour doesn't allow this, especially when it comes to the arms. Japanese armour was designed to allow you to string a bow, whilst also offering protection both in melee as well as in missile exchanges.
Also, this is a game. I do think that Mounted Samurai shouldn't be able to beat French knights, but this is more because the whole civ trait of France is that they're supposed to have some of the best heavy cavalry. But we can't expect the game to be completely historically accurate, otherwise we would have some really OP civs with no ways to beat them.

    • @captainobvious8530
      @captainobvious8530 9 місяців тому +7

@@saffron5802 You are reasoning in the wrong direction. It is because they had poor armors that archery was very efficient, just like the chinese repetition crossbow ('chu ko nu') never found any use outside of asia as it was not powerful enough to pierce mail.
Anyways, medieval warfare is like any competition, the more people involved the more the global level of skill rises. There is no chance that the Japanese, being shut down on their island, developped a superior technology to arabs, mongols or europeeans, who were constantly fighting each other. It is all fictionnal.

Yes but the Knights become a lot cheaper if built under the influence of the Keeps + Enlistment incentives. They are 25% cheaper than Japanese Knights, so the French can keep churning them out from stables a lot faster than the Japanese. Pair the Knights with Arbalests and the Japanese will lose.
