Not to worry, its just a matter of preference. If you are looking to minimize the scalpiness of the style, typically fan or bricklay are best. If you end up not liking the scalp pattern over time, you can always migrate your parts. When you do maintenance, just add the new growth in the direction of where you want your part to move. Eventually, you will have new part lines. Easy peasy! :)
Omg!!!! I don't WHY it took me so long to find this video! Great explanation. I really hope u make more hair videos with detailed explanations!!!! Thank u so much 😀
u know.I cant describe my joy I was looking for allthoses paterns n finally finally thx u so much.I subs n I know that u will really help me everywhere.thx
You can do the partings any size you want to. This is just to give an example of the shapes. :) You’d want to adjust the size depending on the style you are doing.
Done. I took screen shots and wrote some brief directions. I don't know if you guys want them for your website or not, but if so let me know and I'll link you. Much love.
Hey there! Thanks so much for this great video. I thought you guys should know that I included this video in the description of my 1 week Dreadlock Journey update :)
I’m having a hard time with the first row. It seems to be the shortest and I dont like to make my parts so big. Also can you teach the diamond method? How do you do the fan method in smaller Locs?
The first row can be tricky. It's a judgement call. If it's really awkward, you can always consider shaving it up to a better starting shape. Diamond pairings are the same as triangle - just omit the center parallel straight line. Fan method in smaller locs is the same, just budget your hair for smaller sections. :)
That depends on how you mean. Once they are in, it is harder to change a part, but while you are installing them, you can create two partlines (middle and side) and then just work around those lines for your sections. If your installation is tight, you may have to wait a bit to really use both part lines (as flipping hair in the other direction might hurt), but once it loosens, you'll have the versatility you are looking for.
I'm doing my own hair for the first time. I'm thinking it would be easier to start at the front(triangle parting) then work my way back. Would this mess up the pattern?
@wjking1974 Dude, full screen, pause at the diagram you want, press "prtsc sysrq" button which is above the backspace (screen capture), open MS Paint, right click and "paste", print that off.
You just split the difference - the most important part is to get the sections parted with accuracy in the places where you will see them, which is the top and the back. :) You don't have to carve them off separately, but you'll want to work up to the horseshoe, then do the top. :)
You would create the center part, the use the crescent pattern starting at the bottom and then work your way toward the centerline. Not all of your sections will be the ideal shape because you have to maintain the centerline, but as long as they are for the most part, it will still look great. :)
Which pattern would you recommend for a half dread install? Where the underside is dreads and the top is natural (first timer here, trying to learn allll the things 😁)
I am getting my hair dreaded in a week, I do have my sides and back shaved with an under cut, so I’m basically going to have a dread hawk, I have finer and less dense hair, which sectioning should I ask for for the maximum number of dreads to have?
The triangle or fan will be your best bet, maybe a bit of a mixture of the two depending on your final style. Don't try to pack too many in there. You will want to make sure that your natural hair sections can support the weight of the dreads.
There really aren't many. The triangle sectioning shows the most scalp, so if you want the focus to be on the hair, then you might want to avoid that one. I think that bricklay is probably the easiest to maintain, but the others aren't too bad. Really, its just a matter of what you think looks best. :)
I'm going with the fan method. When I come to the hairline part I'll have to have the front locs going forward to stay out the way of the middle parts tho
There is no right or wrong way - if you want to see your parts first, just band each section off - that way if you get stuck you can change it before you commit. :)
*This is a stupid question but* Which one of these do you think will make my hair mm.. Medium size but a bit smaller.. if you know what i mean. Because my hair is quite thick and you know :T I just have no clue lol.
Ah friend of mine used the brick method however instead of using 3 sections on the bottom row he used 4 and incorperated that in the rest of the sections
What you can do is use the triangle parting, and then add the top triangle to the bottom for your section. Just scale down for size. If you are finding it hard to transition from the back to the top, your sections might not be the perfect shape when it transitions. Just keep them the right shape on the top and edges and it will look great!
None are really best - I really like the fan parting though because I feel like its more "organic" and natural. But some people really like how clean the other ones look.
@SolaceInEntropy And if you have problems, just message me or something and...you know what? Screw it. My internet's being a bitch, I've got to stay up all day to reset my internal clock (winter break--the devil), I'll link you to an image when I'm finished watching and patching one together that you can print out. Hi! I have and undercut and I just want to do dreads on top of my head. I want to know 1 thing: My hair towards the forehead is longer then the ones on the side and back, if I'm going to use twist and rip and I have to section my hair with the triangle style, do I have to watch out for not mixing the long hair with the short ones? I hope I am clear, if not I can explain another time. THANK YOU!

I generally go with the fan shape partings unless I have a reason for very defined edges. The fans typically minimize the “scalp” look.
I would love to see mature locs in all these to compare....but great video, gave me a great starting point
OMG theeeee best explanation and diagram of parting techniques EVER!!! Thank you for posting!

Hi! Is it possible to change the part on my braidlocs? Like start with a middle part and change it to a side part? Thank you.

Doctored Locks I see, thank you. Is it possible to braid the locals so there isn't any part? If so, how might I do that?
If you stagger your placement there will be no discernible part line. :)
which do u think wud look better wit thiner hair?
what is the purpose for different sectioning and how do you know which on to use, i just started my locks and the triangle method was used
Really good and informative video!

They will get there, they just take time and a little work. :) If you get stuck, just let me know and I can try to help you through it.

Thank you so much! I struggle terribly, with sectioning my hair. This helps alot! 😉
Excellent!! :)
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
I believe there should be a way to incorporate middle parts somewhere. Could you do a revised method with middle parts

Any tips on how to have crescent shaped but with a center part?

Do you guys sell this diagram?
Which pattern would you recommend for a half dread install? Where the underside is dreads and the top is natural (first timer here, trying to learn allll the things 😁)
Any of them can work! :) If you wanted to see what each of them looked like prior to installation, you can band each section.

How would you do fan parting if you want a middle and side part?
You would define those two lines, and then do the fan partings around them. :)
Yay! Glad to help!
Thanks!
We don’t sell it, but if you want a print out I can get you one. :)
Where can I get this template from ?
Send in email to Hello@doctoctoredlocks.com with your request and I will track that down for you :)
Excellent video..
I have been looking for this for a while :-))

Doctored Locks Thank you
which parting is better for a thinning front
Personally, I almost always use rounded fan style partings so that way I can fit them to the hairline as I like.
Please make a tutorial on how to do fan shaped parting.
I'll add it to our list.
thanks for the help

I need a diamond parting tutorial. Once I get to the top, I get off track.
What you can do is use the triangle parting, and then add the top triangle to the bottom for your section. Just scale down for size. If you are finding it hard to transition from the back to the top, your sections might not be the perfect shape when it transitions. Just keep them the right shape on the top and edges and it will look great!
No problem. :) Send pics!

Awesome. We will send that right over. Expect an email shortly. :)
Or we can get you a copy if its too grainy. :)
Nice

Probably bricklayer, just because the dreads would flow over the spaces in your hair, showing less scalp.

You would just need to be careful to not incorporate anything you didn't want dreaded. You can mix the lengths though. :)
