Even though i don't have dreads(yet), i still looove watching your videos. I've learned so much. You're such a great teacher. you make everything so easy to follow and and give very thorough information.
A few Fridays ago, I was fuelled by whisky, me and my clippers buzzed my impulsive head. My beloved dreads, clean off. Trying to be patient and remind myself that I will be a dread-head soon. Dont feel so alone after seeing your comment (this is the first comment I have ever posted on)
Just got the courage and inspiration to do this on my own...Thanks to your tutorial! Just ordered your Extension Elastic and can't wait to instal next week. I will follow you on Instagram to show you the results :) Thank YOU!
I just got my blue DE dreads I ordered from you on Amazon. I was so happy with the card and Swidish Fish candy. I'll be installing my dreads soon once done I will post about them on your account on Amazon and here as well. looking forward to my new style. they look amazing by the way. I may have order to many but extra never hurts.
I had to do my own short hair extensions as my loctician thought that my hair was too short. I think that he did not want to go through the trouble of using thread, which is the secret to adding extensions to short hair. It is a challenge to do it yourself when it is in the back of your head. Lol. I will definitely try and find that elastic thread looks dope!
I just tried installing se dreads on my hair about a week ago and also did your method of hiding the rubberband with synthetic hair as well. I had to take them out very early cause my head became nonstop itchy and I realized that the teased hair and dreads were tangled together easily. I can’t tell if the sectioned plaits I had on my hair were too tight (I crocheted my dreads through my hair) or if the synthetic hair tagging caused my head to itch so bad!!! I’m giving it another try soon and this time I don’t care if people see the rubberbands xD
Its usually because they were installed too tightly and the bumps are caused by tiny irritations at the hair follicles on the edges of each section - super common. For the first few days you can take some benedryl and ibuprofen - it usually calms down after day 3. Do watch for hairs being pulled out - then the individual dreads that are doing that need to be loosened a bit. You can tell because the hairs that are sticking out will have white colored root bulbs on one end. Don't worry, you'll get this. Once you get your system down, its going to look and feel amazing!
Doctored Locks thanks so much!!! I think I’m gonna stick to se dreads for the time being while my hair grows out!! Hopefully I can get some real hair extensions and start my own medium length dreads!
Literally just found this video years later, but I'm glad cuz I just got some extensions and my hair is about this length! I'm not exactly sure how to install the kind I have though, they arent real hair but more realistic looking and have loops on the end of them.
Great tutorial! I just have a question, I've tried to wear synthetic dreadlocks on short hair, around one inch and a half, but I had a terrible reaction on my scalp, itching, redness and even some hairloss, how can I avoid it? I used rubber band at that time. Thank you very much.
I do not recommend dreads on hair shorter than 3''. You are experiencing tension bumps from the hair pulling on the hair follicle which can lead to hair loss.
Thank you so much for this I buzzed my hair and I hate it everywhere else says I have to have 3 inch of hair I literally started crying when I saw this video thank you
I absolutely love your videos! I have been using them as a guide for my cyber falls I'm making myself since they are so expensive. I'm actually using yarn since its easier and cheaper for me to use. This video is helpful since my hair is pretty short lol. I was worrying about it.
All synth dread installations last as long as the grow out looks good - which they usually need to be redone at about a month and a half. You can wash them everyday, but make sure that they are completely dry. It's more important to maintain the oils from your scalp which you can do with witch hazel and cotton rounds.
Hello! I got my synthetic extensions in because of your video, even bought my dreads from Doctored Locks and I love them so much I made the investment in human hair extensions! So, my request is for a video showing how to permanently attach them to short hair, and how short is too short? Thanks for all y’all do!
Sweeeet! :) Check out the video for permanently installing human hair dreadlocks. There really isn't a way to do them on "short" hair - as to get a good grip and blend, you do need a few inches. BUT while you are waiting for those few inches to come in, just keep doing this style of install. :) If some places have length and others don't, you can even transition into permanent section by section over time. :)
Just ordered my first set of SE dreads and was going to install myself. I have a short blonde mohawk so was going to use clear rubber bands. My hair is, longer at the front than at the back. Would you recommend starting with the shorter hair to the rear or the longer hair? I can braid the longer hair but this method could work well for the shorter area.

i would love a video on how to install them on long hair...it looks so wierd when u trying to go for dreads but it actually looks like braided in hair pieces..any suggestions??
Yes! Check out the video for blanket stitch braid coming out next week. :) It helps keep long hair shortened at the top. If you still want more coverage, we have another video the following week on how to camouflage that part too. :)
I have an event where I want to wear my dreads to and the elastic matrix won't come in on time . Is there a more easily accessible alternative to the thread. I don't want to use elastic bands
Hi, I've been growing out my pixie and I think I've got a few inches now. Was wondering if I could use SE synth dreads as permanent installations? I really want my natural hair to be dreaded eventually and thought this would be a good compromise to just let my hair grow dreaded with the extension. Any tips/tricks welcome. Thank you!
If you are wanting something more permanent, I would suggest creating some human hair SE. Synthetics will break down over time. Check out the Building Human Hair Dreadlock Extensions section here www.doctoredlocks.com/tutorials/human-hair-dreadlocks/
My hair is currently like the mannequin's just a little longer on the top. My question is How big should i make each section for DE? I was told i would need 20-30 DE to fully do my hair.
This will depend on the thickness of the dreads and your desired completed style. You will need sections that will support the weight of each dread and create a secure braid.
Attempted this on my short hair (it's the same length as the model in this video) but they were too tight I think. I needed to take them out because it was causing massive headaches. Could this be the weight of the dreads vs how short my hair is? Would you recommend a certain width\weight for the dreads for the short hair? Maybe a thinker amount of hair per dread?
It is possible that they were too tight or that your dread was too much weight for your section. Everyone is going to have a different scalp tolerance. I would suggest trying a larger section and going a little looser your next round.
Not really - its going to be the same process. Just be careful about attaching too much weight. Your sections may need to be slightly larger to compensate. Everything else is the same though. :)
Which is better for short hair, SE or DE? My hair is finally a little bit longer than the mannequin in the video. Im going to be making and installing my own dreads. I own two sets of DE dreads and have not been able to install them easily, but they are not the best quality. i finally got the synth hair and am looking to make se dreada any tips?? I have a grown out messy pixie
Its easier to install SE on short hair because the sections can be smaller - but that only really applies to normal thickness. For example, I made a full DE set that was perfect for short hair because they were thinner than pencil width (there were 105 dreads). If you want to make DE, just do them thin. If you want them normal thickness, then SE is easier. :)
The age old question! It depends. SE you are going to see the braid more. DE you are going to see two tails. For me, I always prefer DE because they go in faster and I always put the unbraided side to the top to hide the braids more. Everyone has an opinion though - and no one is wrong. :) I just like the speed and coverage from DE. :) If your hair is really really short though, you can use much smaller sections with SE and have it look most natural.
Does it matter how you spilt each section into two? Cause i do mine opposite than you. For SE i do vertical and DE i do horizontal. Makes the dreads lay better in my opinion.
It just depends on how you want your dreads to sit - as you said, the DE's would go side to side rather than stacked. I think it kind of depends on the dreads and if they have a good kink at the center section - but I prefer the unbraided part to cover the braided side. Honestly, its all preference - there really isn't any right or wrong with this. If I ever redo these, I will add what each install looks like - the up and down vs side to side so anyone installing can see what it looks like. :) I think that will be helpful. :) Thanks for the inspiration!!
I noticed someone mentioned hair loss. Is this permanent or does that solely depend on the individual? I've been using dreads for about a year now and my hair is somewhat thin but never noticed hair loss (aside from after having them in for 3-4 months then taking them out). But for the first day or two I do get redness in some areas
Hair loss can occur if the dreads are installed too tightly, they are at improper angles or you are adding too much weight to a section of hair. You will see the shed of your hair come out when removing the extensions since all the hairs your would have lost are bound up in that braid. If you see the hair pulling from the scalp with the hair follicle attached, then you will want to adjust the tension, angle or weight.
I did this to my short hair and it caused immense pressure and damage to my hair, as in ripping out the hair near the parts, because of how tight it has to be with hair that short in order to prevent the dread falling off. Everyone, NOT recommended.
You need to guage this for yourself. I just did my partner's hair with this method last night.. If you are ripping out hair, then yes, they are too tight. This is a great method when your hair is too short for a braid - but you do need to have enough hair to do the method properly. You'll know very quickly if they are too tight. You can usually tug a bit at the base to loosen the fit without having to do a full take down. As with any method, use your own discretion.
I had my friend use elastic matrix thread for my second install (also only her second time installing). I like it because it doesn't pull as hard as the rubber bands and gives me more freedom to style the dreads without the discomfort. However, I am on day 3 and the thread isn't holding very well. Some of the dreads are falling out. I don't know if it's because my friend didn't put them in tight enough or because the thread isn't gripping on to my short, fine hair. Is this normal or do they usually stay in without a problem?
I use this stuff for all my dread installs and they should stay for a couple of months with no problem. If you email me some pics, I may be able to help troubleshoot what is going wrong specifically. A lot of times its the angle of the braid on the dread. We have a video called "why are my dreads slipping" (at least I think that's what we named it lol) and that might give you some ideas too. You can send pics to doc@doctoredlocks.com :)

if your hair is really long, like 2ish feet long can you still put dreads in?
Yes, absolutely. Look up blanket stitch dread installation. Its a tighter braid pattern to keep the natural hair closer to the scalp.
Where can I go to yet these installed?
You will need to check with stylists in your area. If you are in Washington State, I do have a few recommendations.
