Which Twin Are You More Attracted To? | The Science of Generosity

- Julian is back! And this time, we're talking about "generosity." We've partnered with our friends at the John Templeton Foundation, who have also been researching and exploring Life's Big Questions, to put some studies on generosity to the test to see how generosity affects our happiness, relationships, and decisions. In this study, Julian wonders how evolution produced generosity, and whether generosity can affect how attractive people are. Will these woman find one twin more attractive than the other because they perceive him to be more generous?

Oh man the girls were so into it and then to had to find out the guys were actors. 🤣
I'm gay let's get together 909 442 8733
I still don't understand why anyone would answer how physically attractive they thought the guys were without ever having laid eyes on them. Although I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we're more likely to find a nice person physcially attractive... And I don't know that these questions had much to do with generosity, more about bending over backwards for the other person. Weird "experiment."
Interesting thought. What do you think the difference between generosity and bending over backwards for someone is?
Thank you for asking! Well I guess I would think of generosity as usually being of a tangible thing. As in, if I had 30 apples, and you're sitting here with me and I know you like apples, I give you half of them. Or maybe I give you 5 of them because I know there are other people out there that need apples, and I'll put some aside for them. If I know there are 29 people out there who need apples, I just might give 29 of them away, or even all 30 if someone needs apples more than I do. We can speak, too, of being generous with our time, or our talents... like someone volunteering to drive someone who is unable to drive themselves to appointments. Or a musician offering to play for free at a fundraising event. Those could be considered acts of generosity, too, in a sense. But what is generosity vs. kindness, or gratitude. For example with the first question, re Hallowe'en, is it "generous" to opt to stay home to give out candy to the trick-or-treaters? It doesn't fit into that category for me. I don't think "Guy #2" is giving anything up to do that, because that's his preference. And when guy #2 "makes it big", well why wouldn't he spring for a trip for his parents if he's rolling in dough, so that's not really generous either. If I have 30 apples (remember that?) and I give you two of them and keep the rest for myself, am I generous to have given you two apples? And the one about if we lived across town from each other who'd do the driving... Well, in my mind anyway, it's perfectly fair to split the driving assuming both have access to a similar means of transportation (ie not 4 hours on the bus vs 30 minutes in the car); for "Guy #2" to respond that he'd be willing to do all the driving isn't "just to come and see you!" isn't, in my mind, generosity. It's more along the lines of hmmm self-sacrifice that will end in a whirling vortex of "bending over backwards" for the other person to the detriment of one's own well-being. Generosity should not be to one's own detriment. And looking out for one's self shouldn't be to the detriment of everyone else, either. Well, I've strayed bit there, but hopefully answered your question. Thank you again for asking.
I think the difference is motive. If you find yourself constantly bending over backwards for others, you might just be codependent on other people's approval instead of genuinely generous. Generosity is great, but people have to consider what their motive is for being so. If you think it'll allow you to get ahead and get you something from someone else, you're not exactly doing it for the right reasons. Some people have low self confidence in themselves and think they have to get stepped on or do things for others to get friendship or relationships in general; I think that's a problem.
Thanks for answering JonesStreetMusic! 😊
Interesting thought Peach Pixie!
I would have chose guy 2 as well. I agree with what the ladies had to say. Emotional generosity these days will go a long way. It is (sadly) in short supply.
Belinda Joy
true
I'm sorry but this is not an experiment at all. The scripted answers made it too obvious that guy no. 1 is a jerk and guy no. 2 - a sweetheart.
Chaya Adler That is actually the point of it all. 2 people that look the same should have the same level of attractiveness, so this shows that the emotional connetion (aka jerk vs nice guy) actually makes someone more attractive
Exactly. They were actors, they did this to prove that being generous has a relation to attractiveness.
I think you may have missed the point? It flew right over my head until I read your commet. Then, I realized that the experement is to find out "jerk vs nice guy" which is more attractive.
Yeah, also the "I think so too" at 3:49 from the host impacted the "experiment". He's doing the study, he wrote the answers and the questions, but also is affirming specific answers as good to the people being studied.
Not a best practice for getting clear data.
you're not very bright, are you?
this doesn't mean generous guys are more physically attractive. the girls had 0 idea what they looked like so they only went based on personality. this only proves women like nice guys emotionally, it doesn't prove anything about physical attractiveness.
Mina psychical
The time is yours... Enjoy your day!
😊
Yes!! I love these 'Science of' videos. Great to learn something about our behaviours that we sometimes don't think about a lot.
The important question is; what was the point of them being twins if the women didn't even see them before rating them.....
Fun experiment, but not truly scientific. Its reliability may be high, but its validity includes assumptions. There could definitely be other factors at play (e.g., sincerity) apart from what is believed to be generosity. However, thank you, thank you, thank you for this science video - I was growing wary of all the relationship(y) ones!
Please no more science videos that don't point out sources for claims like at 1:46. It's like a bad parody.
DID ANYONE ELSE GET TRIGGERED BY THE G NOTE AT 51 SECONDS
Elisabeth Reese i'm actually fascinated by the fact that you recognized the note. perfect pitch i very uncommon... but maybe this could be a sign of what ill call "emo perfect pitch"
Yeaaaah😂😂
I came down here just to see if anyone else noticed that oh boy
So definitely not dealing with physical attractiveness. Just who is telling the females what they would rather hear. Not an experiment. Just a display of the obvious.
TheTfroggy912 Yeah it doesn’t matter whether they’re identical or not because they were actually looking at their attractiveness in terms of personality. So this isn’t very valid in looking at what they said they were looking at
But isn't the fact that you are acknowledging that people like to hear a potential partner being generous just further proof of our hypothesis??? 😉
SoulPancake The hypothesis has been looked at before. We know that’s how it works. But the way it’s done, looking at physical attractiveness and trying to base it off that with identical twins doesn’t work if they can’t actually see them. The people rating their attractiveness really just were rating their overall attractiveness, not physical.
No. This was a horrible video.
"The females"
Ew.
I really really love this series!!! I hope to get surprised once more, and to once in a while cry my heart out for something emotional that happens ^^
JULIAN 4 almost 5 years passed and I STILL think you're attractive!!!😍❤😍❤😍❤😍❤
Wooohoooo :) soo glad this show is back!!
I love Julian! Yay!
This show is Sooooo fun
This isn't a bad experiment, but not what I expected. I think a better format would be along the same line, but like a blind date with each (people are told they're going to have a 6 minute date with each twin, one at a time.) One guy gives answers like the first, the other guy gives answer like the second. I've met some people who look exactly the same standing side by side, but I swear my brain tells me otherwise when one-on-one that one is physically more attractive than the other because of their differing personalities.
You should do more the science of ... Honestly it was the main reason I subscribed to this channel u rock
Thanks for watching Jana!
I honestly don't understand why its hard to find decent generosity now-a-days. I know it likely isn't true, but its almost like guys/girls feel like being like a bad boy/girl is sexier, or more attractive.
Love love love this show!! Please continue to be so generous with the episode 🤓
Turn the gender around and see the difference.....
Dude f**k off with your feminist or anti-feminist (honestly don't know or care) bulls**t
I think it would be the same. =)
Sebastian Elytron They didn't even say anything about feminism... like ??
Are you saying men wouldn't be attracted to the generous woman? Studies I've seen indicate guys put a high value on the body best suited to carry and birth a baby, but in a study like this, where both women would be identical twins, I think men are generally very drawn to giving women.
Sunflower Monroe wow you are a nasty little sunflower. Shame on you
Yeayyy a new series!!! :)
ok guy #2 was cuter even in the thumbnail
Just hearing their answers, guy #2 is the best!
This was excellent!
Was the opening a parody of science shows with the cutaways to bad jokes and talking in stops and starts like the Vsauce guy? XD
The woman, while rating the physical attractiveness of the guys, apparently considered more than the physical. At 4:32 the woman said “he had some good answers.” Plus, juxtaposing the two guys made this very unrealistic. If say 6 guys were used, 3 of whom were neutral, one a jerk, and two “generous” then that could help to not create a bias. The women would try to rate the men right after conversing with them. Then, a trend or correlation could be determined.
That's not physical attractiveness though. That's more emotional attractiveness to me.
I really like your outtro song. What is it?
Toss the twins and give me Julian !
Wait a minute wait a minte, 5:04, "6 out of 7 women said they'd prefer to date guy #2." Were they asked that question? Weren't they just asked who they thought was more attractive?
JonesStreetMusic maybe he did ask but just didn’t show it. i see you’re quick to point out others flaws.
As he said one girl rated both of them equally so he excluded her and said 6 out of 7
how would you rate their physical attractiveness?
*not even physical, they haven't seen each other yet but okay.*
It was the pink shirt... Science !
5:34 - Easy, tiger.
EliteXtasy she seemed so desperate hahah
Well then if generosity is attractive, then I’m the least attractive man alive
I already knew I was attracted to number 2 before I clicked the video just from the video thumbnail....what does that mean?
Lmfao me not regretting the time I put in watching this shows how much help I need.
I thought guy number two was more attractive in the thumbnail. His head is longer than his twin’s.
As a guy {gay} I found the answers both understanding.
Sweet!
I am pretty generous and kind, since I am a solid 4 I guess I am actually a 2.5 + nice haha
Hey comment readers
Lol
Hey Shaniel Stewart
hi commentator
I'd take both at the same time. 🤣
honestly.... they should have picked 1 as the more attractive because attractive guys know they are and maybe not try too hard. guy 2 seemed like he had to use his personality in addition to looks.
All right.. "science"
Actor number two is actually a boyfriend material. I'd certainly date him if he was real. ♥♥
It would be interesting with the female side :)
Comical way to say good qualities matter more than looks.
Am I the only person who would’ve given guy number 2 a really low score because he sounded too good to be true? Idk I don’t think any human is that “generous” I would’ve assumed he was a player and a super fake person 😬
He is the same guy from April fools of Nvidia G-assist and the last Nvidia’s April fools prank also :3
Julian if only you were half as witty and charismatic on Seeker as you are here.......
Sebastian Elytron That’s preposterous, I’m 53% this witty and charismatic on Seeker.
jhug111 woahhh is that really you
I don't relate at all with these girls. Personally I'd choose the Guy n1 because there's something in these answers that shows quite a maturity and a self respect. For example the question about which one who will drive to the other's house. I mean... Like seriously. It's maybe another reason why I never really feel connected to girls.
I left my dude because he was selfish (and not only with me), so there is merit to this anecdote. However, when is a person generous as opposed to being a people pleaser with low self-esteem? It seems like the 2nd guy was trying to appeal to the women’s egos. The ladies thought nothing of making any of those answers fair or work for both of them. That highlighted the women’s selfishness, which was similar to guy #1.
when a girl finds out that julien was the script writer "oh..." 😂😂
Julian is low-key cute.
why that random unnecessary camera angle it breaks concentration and it is distracting and UNNECESSARY
Nice guys DO finish last, cause you know why? The finish line of life is death. So by being nice, you're prolonging your life. And people who are assholes or jerks or cunts, they die real fast.
Outro???
Wow
what happend to kid president?
Anyone know the outro song?
It's the same for girls right?
handsome guys :-)
Lmao is it just me or I wouldn’t want no.2 at all. I feel like a pushover sweetheart would get so boring fast. No.1 seemed more pragmatic
I would have wanted to have men judging two women. Like the genders reversed.
This is dumb. The guys were given scripts. It says nothing at all about who they are...
You look like Sid from ice age.
pls do Arabic sub
Generosity is sexy
Two of the hottest guys I have ever seen. Way to go Geoff and Greg! And you both seemed very kind!
This is just stating the obvious............
15th like
3rd
In the end guys would still go with whoever had the best t!ts!
Kid president don’t smack talk about my favorite UA-camd like u did on Vidcon 2015 I am unsubscribing
