Which Twin Are You More Attracted To? | The Science of Generosity

  • Julian is back! And this time, we're talking about "generosity." We've partnered with our friends at the John Templeton Foundation, who have also been researching and exploring Life's Big Questions, to put some studies on generosity to the test to see how generosity affects our happiness, relationships, and decisions. In this study, Julian wonders how evolution produced generosity, and whether generosity can affect how attractive people are. Will these woman find one twin more attractive than the other because they perceive him to be more generous?

    I still don't understand why anyone would answer how physically attractive they thought the guys were without ever having laid eyes on them. Although I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we're more likely to find a nice person physcially attractive... And I don't know that these questions had much to do with generosity, more about bending over backwards for the other person. Weird "experiment."

    • @Participant
      @Participant  6 років тому +4

      Interesting thought. What do you think the difference between generosity and bending over backwards for someone is?

    • @JonesStreetMusic
      @JonesStreetMusic 6 років тому +5

      Thank you for asking! Well I guess I would think of generosity as usually being of a tangible thing. As in, if I had 30 apples, and you're sitting here with me and I know you like apples, I give you half of them. Or maybe I give you 5 of them because I know there are other people out there that need apples, and I'll put some aside for them. If I know there are 29 people out there who need apples, I just might give 29 of them away, or even all 30 if someone needs apples more than I do. We can speak, too, of being generous with our time, or our talents... like someone volunteering to drive someone who is unable to drive themselves to appointments. Or a musician offering to play for free at a fundraising event. Those could be considered acts of generosity, too, in a sense. But what is generosity vs. kindness, or gratitude. For example with the first question, re Hallowe'en, is it "generous" to opt to stay home to give out candy to the trick-or-treaters? It doesn't fit into that category for me. I don't think "Guy #2" is giving anything up to do that, because that's his preference. And when guy #2 "makes it big", well why wouldn't he spring for a trip for his parents if he's rolling in dough, so that's not really generous either. If I have 30 apples (remember that?) and I give you two of them and keep the rest for myself, am I generous to have given you two apples? And the one about if we lived across town from each other who'd do the driving... Well, in my mind anyway, it's perfectly fair to split the driving assuming both have access to a similar means of transportation (ie not 4 hours on the bus vs 30 minutes in the car); for "Guy #2" to respond that he'd be willing to do all the driving isn't "just to come and see you!" isn't, in my mind, generosity. It's more along the lines of hmmm self-sacrifice that will end in a whirling vortex of "bending over backwards" for the other person to the detriment of one's own well-being. Generosity should not be to one's own detriment. And looking out for one's self shouldn't be to the detriment of everyone else, either. Well, I've strayed bit there, but hopefully answered your question. Thank you again for asking.

    • @natalyrausch
      @natalyrausch 6 років тому +5

      I think the difference is motive. If you find yourself constantly bending over backwards for others, you might just be codependent on other people's approval instead of genuinely generous. Generosity is great, but people have to consider what their motive is for being so. If you think it'll allow you to get ahead and get you something from someone else, you're not exactly doing it for the right reasons. Some people have low self confidence in themselves and think they have to get stepped on or do things for others to get friendship or relationships in general; I think that's a problem.

    I'm sorry but this is not an experiment at all. The scripted answers made it too obvious that guy no. 1 is a jerk and guy no. 2 - a sweetheart.

    • @aprendiendoC
      @aprendiendoC 6 років тому +56

      Chaya Adler That is actually the point of it all. 2 people that look the same should have the same level of attractiveness, so this shows that the emotional connetion (aka jerk vs nice guy) actually makes someone more attractive

    • @shaipatz
      @shaipatz 6 років тому +27

      Exactly. They were actors, they did this to prove that being generous has a relation to attractiveness.

    • @btdtpro
      @btdtpro 6 років тому +4

      Yeah, also the "I think so too" at 3:49 from the host impacted the "experiment". He's doing the study, he wrote the answers and the questions, but also is affirming specific answers as good to the people being studied.
      Not a best practice for getting clear data.

    this doesn't mean generous guys are more physically attractive. the girls had 0 idea what they looked like so they only went based on personality. this only proves women like nice guys emotionally, it doesn't prove anything about physical attractiveness.

    Fun experiment, but not truly scientific. Its reliability may be high, but its validity includes assumptions. There could definitely be other factors at play (e.g., sincerity) apart from what is believed to be generosity. However, thank you, thank you, thank you for this science video - I was growing wary of all the relationship(y) ones!

    So definitely not dealing with physical attractiveness. Just who is telling the females what they would rather hear. Not an experiment. Just a display of the obvious.

    • @emilywestlund4527
      @emilywestlund4527 6 років тому +6

      TheTfroggy912 Yeah it doesn’t matter whether they’re identical or not because they were actually looking at their attractiveness in terms of personality. So this isn’t very valid in looking at what they said they were looking at

    • @Participant
      @Participant  6 років тому +3

      But isn't the fact that you are acknowledging that people like to hear a potential partner being generous just further proof of our hypothesis??? 😉

    • @emilywestlund4527
      @emilywestlund4527 6 років тому +3

      SoulPancake The hypothesis has been looked at before. We know that’s how it works. But the way it’s done, looking at physical attractiveness and trying to base it off that with identical twins doesn’t work if they can’t actually see them. The people rating their attractiveness really just were rating their overall attractiveness, not physical.

    This isn't a bad experiment, but not what I expected. I think a better format would be along the same line, but like a blind date with each (people are told they're going to have a 6 minute date with each twin, one at a time.) One guy gives answers like the first, the other guy gives answer like the second. I've met some people who look exactly the same standing side by side, but I swear my brain tells me otherwise when one-on-one that one is physically more attractive than the other because of their differing personalities.

      Are you saying men wouldn't be attracted to the generous woman? Studies I've seen indicate guys put a high value on the body best suited to carry and birth a baby, but in a study like this, where both women would be identical twins, I think men are generally very drawn to giving women.

    The woman, while rating the physical attractiveness of the guys, apparently considered more than the physical. At 4:32 the woman said “he had some good answers.” Plus, juxtaposing the two guys made this very unrealistic. If say 6 guys were used, 3 of whom were neutral, one a jerk, and two “generous” then that could help to not create a bias. The women would try to rate the men right after conversing with them. Then, a trend or correlation could be determined.

For example the question about which one who will drive to the other's house. I mean... Like seriously. It's maybe another reason why I never really feel connected to girls.

    I left my dude because he was selfish (and not only with me), so there is merit to this anecdote. However, when is a person generous as opposed to being a people pleaser with low self-esteem? It seems like the 2nd guy was trying to appeal to the women’s egos. The ladies thought nothing of making any of those answers fair or work for both of them. That highlighted the women’s selfishness, which was similar to guy #1.
