I'm american born and raised. The russian culture difference in this video were quite funny. It's common sense there and here it's over sharing. I've very much enjoyed your videos. I have a few friends who are russian and talked about some of these differences. I find it fascinating!
I was just today discussing the "how are you doing" question, particularly with strangers, and used almost exactly the same example; 'My entire family burnt to death on Wednesday, I'm fine'. Laughed out loud when I heard you use it just now.

I may be able to adapt in Russia I agree with a lot these things. When I learned about why Russians don’t smile at strangers I really liked the reason which was because if they smile at you it means they consider you a friend once they get to know you. I like that they are private as well they only share their lives with family or people who they have developed a strong friendship with. I love Russians! I also like that many people would rather not mess with them.

I'm remembering a moment from Lugansk. I had studied Russian in school, but hadn't been there that long. I was on a forward picket when we got a light rifle fire contact and then got blanketed by a rocket artillery strike. When I returned to the dugout positions to report, I got glomped by formerly dour people expressing how happy they were I was alive., and impressed by the work I had done to hold the outer picket even in direct riflery duels.
For a person with Asperger Syndrome used to deception, hostility, and confusion, this was extremely happy..

Well, I used to attend English classes with a man whose accent was even worse than CRD's, yet his vocabulary exceeded mine by far and grammar was perfect (as far as I could tell). So, it happens.
You're absolutely right. I speak Russian fluently but, I was born here in the US so English is my first language. He obviously has an accent but I can tell that he's putting it on a bit 'tsi-ker' (thicker, lol) than it, is. Also, his vocabulary is of someone who has been here for a while so more than likely his accent isn't as thick.'

@@Victoria-uz5rv in Russian and for example in Spanish an accent "is strong", and I actually thought it would be the same in English: "strong accent". Now I am hesitating... "thick accent"? Is it the rightest way to say it?

But we do have a comparable example here in the US. It’s called New York City. Unless you’re serving someone, you don’t smile at strangers in NYC. It’s weird.
You don't. The whole world needs to just let people be themselves. Some people smile at everything, others are more reserved. I've met some really warm and cuddly people who have resting bitch face.

oookaypal People smiling at each other in the US is a lot like dogs wagging their tails. We’re always a bit uneasy or uncomfortable meeting a person or making eye contact with them. We smile to relieve the tension, and show the other person that we’re friendly and we mean them no harm.
If you make eye contact with someone and they DONT smile at you - then that’s a really big hint that they don’t like you for some reason. Or they might be a very unfriendly or depressed person, or someone that could be dangerous/violent.
So basically, smiles are used to make the other person you’re smiling at feel more comfortable.

I’ve lived almost my whole life in American and still don’t get this and I still don’t smile at people. I feel like when they smile at my theyre laughing inside because of something I did? Maybe it’s just in my dna not to smile at people for no reason. I feel silly and fake.
If you feel stupid, don't do it. It's a myth that all Americans are smiley. The truth is that stoic and introverted people are just ignored by mainstream society. Or they're given a lovely label of "resting bitch face".

This made me laugh! I'm half Russian raised American, and I do all of these things. xD Americans tend to be very open with people, except for when a friend is talking to someone we don't know. Then we become very shy and ignore the new person until we are properly introduced. Sorry about that!

Those situations are kind of awkward. It feels like you would be interrupting a private conversation that will be over soon anyway, so you just pretend you don't exist while looking from the outside. Sometimes a friend's friend will come over and say a few words to them and leave without me ever talking to them.
L C, Don't be sorry about practicing your Russian Culture, my comrade. I have Russian ancestry in my blood! Be yourself; don't change for anyone but for yourself if you want. To be fair, as an American-born American, with full American roots, never spent a day abroad, I'm still trying to learn that "Hi, how you doing?" doesn't actually mean, "Hi, I care about how you're doing." It took me so long just to realise that people don't actually care how you're doing (that it's just a greeting), and I was always surprised that people seemed to move on without truly listening, and would never respond in any way to my own "How are you doing?" (since I genuinely meant it, I couldn't fathom why otherwise nice, polite people were ignoring my question). ...And no, I don't mean this was just some silly childhood mistake. It lasted longer than that... I'm enlightened now, but it still trips me up from time to time.
@avonmoremilk1958 I mean, I think it's sort of adjacent to that. I don't think the rules of our society are built strictly on tricking people of other cultures; every people has their own rules, every culture, every class, colonisers and colonised alike. Because it's about identifying outsiders. "Do you know how to act?" and "Are you one of us?" become synonymous, and we have these (often obscure and obtuse imo) rules, and when someone unknowingly breaks them, we know immediately that they are "other", that they "don't belong". So when colonisers came to other lands, and these other lands had people with a vastly different culture, the colonisers saw that these people were different, that they "didn't know how to act" and therefore they "must be uncivil savages" who "[insert excuse for enslavement/genocide here]". Obviously, terrible conclusions. But I think there's an important distinction between the "social testing" that every society does, and the coloniser mindset of inherently being better/superior/given divine right over people. Those two beliefs definitely can work together, and to terrible effect, but they're not the same thing.

Well sometimes when people say their fine it means they’re depressed or they’re hurting inside but people don’t tend to look deeper into it.

I once worked with a student worker hired by my groundskeeper shop at a university. This kid would ask everyone what they were eating that day. It wasn't enough to just say "McDonald's" because then he would want to know exactly what. I halfway expected him to count my fries. This drove me crazy and I complained to another coworker about it. They evidently told him because he quit asking but if he was ahead of me in the drive thru he always paid for my order because he wanted to know what I was going to eat.
Smiling at strangers must be a uniquely American thing. The first time I went to Europe, I thought everyone was in a bad mood!
There are areas of Europe where smiling at strangers is more common than some areas of the US.

I have to say, I find videos on cultural differences between America and Russia some of the most fascinating on UA-cam. That said, if I, as an American, ask how many hot dogs you want, it's because I want to make sure you're fed, full and happy, but I'm poor as dirt and I don't want to make too much and have it go to waste. 😂 Also, if I ask what you're eating, it's likely because I'm curious and may want to try something new. Keep doing what you do, you crazy russian. 🤣

A lot of these are normal where I'm from. I live in a southern state and generally people will smile and wave at each other, hold the door open out of politeness, say "ma'am" and "sir", etc. It's part of southern culture. I don't find it weird even though I'm not usually one for small talk. Howdy from Texas y'all!

As an American I can tell you that we smile at each other as a way to show respect and to indicate that we don't mean harm. Like if you walk into a store and you're the only one in there with one cashier, you smile at the shopkeeper to let them know, I am not here to rob you.

Part of the fun of learning a new language or encountering strange cultures is you get to see your own with new eyes. I never noticed HiHowAreYouDoing? was not a question. My advice: do not think about the words. Treat it as a ritual, like raising the dead or calling Cthulhu. It is not the meaning of the words, but that they are said.

Everyone is so different in the USA so smile means I am in a good mood and mean you no harm. The ask "how are you doing" is to show interest in others to show concern and camaraderie.
