I'm a 65 year old babushka and very much appreciate when a man holds doors open for me. They're usually, Black, Hassidic Jewish, Haitian, Latino men. Not too many beige colored( caucasian) men if that's what they think they are! And I happen to be Beige colored myself. Maybe, deep down they don't like themselves being beige colored. I don't understand people anymore. 🙏🏼✌🤝👍❤

Americans have let the standards slip...personally, I like a gentleman. Like everything else in the American life, some people take things to the extreme like your instructor. I (and I'm an American female) don't mind it if a man, holds open the door for me, offers to help with heavy packages, etc. There is a point where it can go to far, and every woman has her own definition where that line is drawn. A simple way to find out, if something is out of line...is simply to ask.

    • @mrnobody339

I'm an American man and I date a Russian woman because being a gentleman is appreciated and rewarded as with all of the American women it's taken advantage of and underappreciated. My russian girlfriend lets me be a man and respects me for it . American girls are spoiled drama queens and men need to stop encouraging their behavior and kissing their asses.

Russians have more conservative values it seems and I prefer that and of course I’m a woman. There is a reason men are not so manly these days in north America there are some but not as many. I am a stay at home mom and I gave up getting on with a career in the miliatray to stay at home with my kids. I’m glad I did, sure it’s not easy but I wouldn’t trade it.

One point I learned back in the Gorbachev days, a Russian college student mentioned how her Russian mother was annoyed at Americans "beating around the bush" because they were afraid to offend someone. She wanted people to just blurt out what was on their minds, rather than hem and haw for a few minutes before they can think of a diplomatic way of approaching the topic,.

  • @ServeGod33

Everything you said is right on and I agree completely. I am a female and honestly, I believe a man should always help out a woman, especially if she is carrying something heavy or open the door for her, etc. It's insane to think and to teach men in this country that it's sexual harassment?! Craziness. It even bothers me when a woman is pushing the cart in the store full of groceries while the man or her son is just walking next to her. Once I saw a mother and her son was pushing the cart and I was so happy to see her teaching her son the right way to be a man! And the dress thing, yes, it's totally different. Even younger Russian girls dress in a feminine way here in America where I live. I put on a skirt and a nice shirt even when going grocery shopping. It's just the norm for Russians. Some Americans go to church dressed like they are going to the grocery store. So strange to me.

    • @trueuttar

As a queer, very liberal Russian-American, I am continuously impressed by how progressive you show yourself to be in these videos, and how intelligently you discuss these topics. On the one hand, my expectations re: progressivism for others from the Soviet Union are kind of low; on the other hand, though, my standards in general are quite high (as is often true of others from my generation), and I respect your views more than I do those of many "liberal" Americans that I've met. Thanks for that, it's super cool to see!

The idea was that if you're a man, you must go out of your way to be polite and kind to a woman. Same goes for boys with girls, you were obligated not to upset them or let them come to harm.
If you were a woman, these things were optional. Likewise for males with other males, it's optional.
The only exception is age. Being an adult always commanded extra respect from children, and being a senior person, from children and from working-age adults.
However, it was never discouraged to be polite or kind to anyone, whomever you might be.
    That was the point.
In Soviet times, despite "gender roles", women worked in every industry in every role. The party doctrine was actually very progressive towards women in the work place, at least in theory. I think most Russians understand that men and women generally have the same number of arms and legs, and can do any job equally. Though I wonder about how things are in today's much more conservative Russia.
Russian women differ on how a woman should be dressed. Some dress for comfort, others to draw attention to themselves. This attention-seeking behavior tends to drop off as women age; very few grandmothers wear high heels and dresses to show off their legs in a blizzard, but some 20 year olds might risk frostbite or spend the grocery budget on an article of clothing... Men are expected to be clean, but mostly dress for comfort. Which is strange, because young men want young women to notice them too...
Cooking isn't very hard, and simple food is often easy to make well and very satisfying. But Americans either never really knew how to cook simple food well, or more likely, they've forgotten.
It's strang, in the 17th century people came to America to eat. There were no large-scale wars, and very few famines. And you had access to super-crops like corn and potatoes.
But industrialized America saw processed foods and poverty on the rise, and people lost access to raw ingredients and simply forgot how to cook something not out of a box or can. Now we have "meal delivery" subscription services, that prepackage your premeasured ingredient with step-by-step instruction for unfamiliar dishes. There's no room to experiment, no room to learn through mistakes.
The knowledge isn't exactly lost, but many younger Americans are having to relearn what their grandparrents took as self-evident basic knowledge.
