      But I'm not sure if you know that he wasn't joking. That's the way you let go your guest from your home, because there is no such humiliation to a host as a feeling that his guest has gone out of his doors still slightly hungry. It's a big shame to a host (no exaggerations).

    I'd like to add that in Russia (or any ex-USSR country) when you come to somebody's house unexpectedly, most often you are being almost forced to sit down and eat without even being asked whether you're hungry or not :)

      Same for Greeks! Number 1 rule in Greece: 1. If you visit some Greeks house, prepare for yiayia to stuff you with truck load of gyros, meat and spanakopita! If you so no you officially pissed her off and will be offended for a bit maybe...but will still over feed. 2. If you quiet...DONT go to greek party unless you wanna be greekified! If you vegan...Stavros and his pork will change you!👍 3. If you are at greek gatherings prepare for the aunties and millions of generations to start hours long chat and if you refuse toulas hundred years chat then family feud happen for next hundred generations..also if you wanna not get hurt then get fat or harden up because the aunties will surely call you underfed.😂

    One thing I always notice is that in America, a person can come over and no food or drink will be offered. Most of the time, in a Russian home, even if you are uninvited, tea will be served and some kind of sweet will be on the table, whether it is cookies or some candies or varenye. In an American home, it's completely fine to not offer anything. Some may offer water. Also, this is not an etiquette thing, but a food thing - in America, every beverage is cold and served with ice on top of it. In Russia, it's always hot tea, no matter if it's winter or summer. Majority of Russians still cook from scratch, unless they have been spoiled by America. Most Americans will serve a composition of warmed up packaged and/or canned (store bought) processed food. Just some of the reasons I am thankful to have grown up in a Russian culture and in a Russian family - it was just better etiquette wise, not communism wise.

    Bit different with Serbs. Tea is only drank if you are sick. We drink coffee like mad and smoke like chimneys.
    And if someone offers you to eat with them, you must say yes, its an offense to say no. But it depends how its asked. If you are asked 'are you hungry' in a passing somewhat manner, than you would say no. But if you are told, 'Come come, eat with us comrade" then its v impolite to say no. Hard to explain.
    But everything else is the same.

    • @ireneroth8252
      @ireneroth8252 6 років тому

      ... the best ones are basically French-influenced sweets: napoleon, eclair, and variations thereof... Some are Czech (torte Pragah..) Very good Hungarian natives.... Most Russian authentic baked goods have savoury fillings, like fish...Bliny are probably Russian originals (the ones made with yeast...). Blinchiki, those are crepes....Though cabbage fillings are definitely Russian invention; as well as sour cherry ones. IMO...
      Rich cakes with poppy-seeds-ground-with-honey... Eastern European, I think; very rich yeast dough. It was the desert my mother always made for our family birthdays; in the shape of krendel. I think the recipe is in that Stalin-era food-bible, 'книга о вкусной и здоровой пище'....I still have it in my basement...
      I've live in US for almost 39 years, but one never forgets the childhood.. Oh nostalgia for one;s youth...;)

    Most shocking is bringing your own alcohol to a party in North America. In Russia if you host a party you buy alcohol ahead for all! And also if you invite people to a cafe for your birthday in Russia you pay for all your guests. In North America if you are invited to a cafe or restaraunt does not mean they pay for you, usually you pay for yourself.

    First I Love😘 your channel. I'm from Ohio. I thought my heritage was Mom Polish and Dad German but I'm thinking I might be Russian, which I would love.😘 Third generation in America that's me. My Mom and both Grandma's filled the table like you said. 😂😋 We needed a bigger table for food and people, So my Mom put 2 tables together with very nice long tablecloth. She would have roasters of food as well. The hotdog comments had me rolling laughing because my Mom said you never run out of food. Now sadly Mom has past on to heaven. Now I fill the table. Love to you and young boy.😘 wishing your whole family good health.😀

    same in southern Italy, they get offended if you don't eat until you can't breathe. If you're a Northern Italy guy and have a Southern Italy girlfriend you'll be part of the family, so it's even harder. The opposite happens with alcohol in Northern italy, especially north-east.

    People are always pushing boundaries and breaking traditions in America. If someone breaks a norm it may be that they are from a different culture and every family has it's own culture or that they are just testing the boundaries. We tend to just let things slide if it is not a big deal. Those that don't are viewed as jerks. It is important to look beyond the external etiquette and give people the benefit of the doubt.

    • @joedirte8355
      @joedirte8355 6 років тому +2

      That’s because the US is full of self important jerks who think “bucking tradition” makes them cool and edgy. They are also so overcome with individualism that we don’t have much in the way of “American” culture anymore other than just being known for being loud and everything being excessive.
