Gomateshwar or Bahubali, the second son of the first Jain Tirthankar, Rishabanadhu, holds a revered position in the Jain community in India. It is said that Bahubali attained enlightenment or salvation by standing still and meditating for a year until the plants climbed around his legs. A huge idol of Gommateshwara was built in ancient India in honor of Bahubali. It is a 57 feet monolithic statue located on a hill in Shravanabelagola, Karnataka, India. The statue was erected in the year 981 AD by Chavundarayya, a minister and commander of the Ganga dynasty.
The anointing of the idol of Bahubali Gommateshwara at Shravanabelagola is the most sacred. It is an important Jain festival that takes place once every 12 years. It is an integral part of the ancient and mixed Jain tradition. Regular train services are available from Bangalore to Shravanabelagola.
